Hanoi The proposed lease of several designated "economic zones" to Chinese factors has triggered a string of protests across the South-East Asian nation. Police have detained more than a dozen ringleaders in the capital Hanoi and have attempted to halt demonstrations in other cities. Some carried anti-China banners, including one reading, "No leasing land to China even for one day". The government proposed a law last year that would give foreign investors a 99-year lease on Vietnamese land. The bill offers them greater incentives and fewer restrictions, in an attempt to promote growth in target areas. The protesters suspect that the Communist government will award Chinese investors a lease over three islands in the South China Sea, amid tensions between the two countries over disputed territory there. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc's attempts to quiet the situation by amending the law to reduce lease periods have failed to keep protestors off the streets. The government has now moved to delay adoption of the proposed legislation in a effort to mollify the crowds. Riding on feelings of global unrest, Vietnamese protests are calling on their military to restrain the leadership of the ruling party. |

--Update-- Just 12 nm outside of Chinese occupied Fiery Cross Reef, two Republic of China Navy submarines have surfaced. The 'Yue Fei' and 'Huo Qubing' represent two recently built AIP submarines, military analysts indicate they seem to be based on the German-made Type 214 but with tropical modifications. The failure of Beijing to detect the ROC's naval build up has come as a huge blow to national pride. Attempts to censor news of the Taiwanese vessels has failed and protests throughout coastal China have been reported in defiance of a government stop order. Pro-ROC rallies have been reported throughout the region, especially in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and places as far away as Sir Lanka where the Chinese government used economic pressure to secure an overseas base. |
