Taken as a whole, 2018 has to be a year considered to be one of stagnation for Britain, with Brexit negotiations needing to be in full swing and David Davis not having traveled to Brussels to negotiate once. Indeed the number of times he threatened to resign should the Prime Minister not pander to the Brexiteer cause far outweighed the amount of times he stated he intended to visit Brussels. Taken alongside the continued wild foreign policy of May and the plunging value of the pound alongside it the cause of Brexit in Britain was seeing a stark did in popularity. From being at rough parity with Remain (43%/43% with 14% unsure) in January the improved opinion polls by YouGov (who predicted the 2017 election with some accuracy) had by May of 2018 taken a definite swing with 47% Remain, 42% Leave and 11% unsure. When queried people pointed to the lack of progress in negotiations and the improving economic situation in Europe in comparison to the continued recession in Britain as a leading reason. This was swiftly followed by the NHS not receiving the promised '£350 million' per week spouted by the Leave Campaign.

In the face of this the dream of Vince Cable that 'the people would be given a second chance to speak regarding Brexit' became a reality with Parliament setting a date of the 1st of August for the two options likely left to Britain. Whether people would wish for a 'No Deal' Brexit or to revoke the activation of Article 50, the exact language of these statements was argued over before being settled on as the following;

Which of the following option's would you prefer?

1. An exit from the European Union with no transition deal?
2. To revoke Article 50 and stay in the European Union?

As it came closer to the date of the referendum the number of 'unsure' respondents began to shrink until the final opinion poll published on 29th July 2018 put forward a prediction of 52% Remain, 43% Leave, 5% Unsure. These numbers were seen as shocking by many with Nigel Farage making his usual public appearance stating 'These numbers are no doubt the fictitious ramblings of a left wing press, what sort of Brussels Socialist owns YouGov anyway?'. Upon a reporter informing him it was the chosen poll for the majority of the Conservative and Pro-Brexit media he merely responded with a loud grunt. With counting going on throughout the night it was as votes began to fall in that a clear majority had begun to form as Newcastle, Sunderland and then the other Northern cities began to return Remain majorities it began to become clear which way the vote was going to fall. When the final numbers were in, it was clear that whatever else would come from this night, that for Britain, despite the loudest of protestations by the Government, Brexit seemingly meant Remain. As the final votes were tallied the numbers were telling, the inaction and lack of vitriol in favour of Brexit had led to it's deathknell. The most stark split was in 18-25s where almost 85% of voters voted remain with the influx of those 16-18 in 2016 into the voting population.

Total Votes: 42,216,155 (90.8% Turnout)
Remain: 23,472,182 (55.6%)
Leave: 18,743,972 (44.4%)

The European Commission has accepted the results and all transitioning related to Article 50's invocation by Britain has ceased, with payment to implement policy and departmental location reversals coming at some cost to the European taxpayer.
