Republic of The Deseret would find some difficulties outside of Utah - I would imagine.

I watched them strap him into the seat and shut the door. He might of looked a bit nervous about it but that was about all. I really believe that he knew he was going to be in hell in fifteen minutes. I believe that. And I've thought about that a lot. He was not hard to talk to. Called me Sheriff. But I didn't know what to say to him. What do you say to a man that by his own admission he has no soul? Why would you say anything? I've thought about it a good deal.

I actually made a similar map about a month ago and had a whole story behind it and everything. I'm sorta obsessed about what would happen if an American Civil War broke out today. For now though, i'll just give out the nations and stuff...

Posted Image

Failed Nations:

Republic of Deseret (Utah, Northern Arizona, Southern Idaho) = Annexed by the New American Democratic Republic (NADR) following a fierce 'Vietnam-style' resistance

The Navaho Nation (Navaho and Hopi Indian Reservation, parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado) = Supported by California, but attacked by the Texan Confederation. Voted to be integrated into Republic of California a year later.

Republic of Louisiana = Although supporters of the United States of America, with nowhere to go and surrounded by two hostile nations, Louisiana surrendered to Texas merely two months after its creation

Democratic Republic of Florida = Consisting of Florida without the 'panhandle', the Florida National Guard fought too poorly (and governed too poorly) to defend itself against the Confederate States of America. They rejoined the USA 5 months later.

,19 May 2009 09.18.05] Maryland wasn't PART of the Confederacy back then.

Depends who you ask. One of the main reasons it didn't flip was because Lincoln instituted martial law pretty darn quickly in Maryland.

Have you ever listened to the state song "Maryland, My Maryland"? It's more a Confederate anthem than Dixie.

Regarding the map, I'd have to see what sort of historical reasoning you gave for the borders as they are, but I'm inclined to think that Deseret is too big and California is oddly shaped (plus I have my doubts it would break from the Union). I also have doubts the North splitting up (and if it did, Missouri would likely go over to the CSA, they were very close to doing so IRL) and about the CSA splitting up (especially just Texas, it would seem the more logical split would be between Upper and Deep South states). But, if you had good historical reasons for all these things, I think it could work.

I actually wanted to use that map for a possible RP idea I had of total chaos after 1862, the nation splitting more, and then these nations conglomorating from the mess of smaller nations. But I can't discuss this openly...

Dont consider it a flame, you know how fashion designers or people like that sometimes throw a fit when they see an article of clothing that is "horrendous" to them? Well Phil is like that just with maps, there may not be anything wrong with it, but he will find it "horrendous" :)

I once participated in an RP where the Union had broken up and each state was its own nation. It was really entertaining, considering that I was New Jersey and was able to wrest New York City from the player who RPed New York, after I convinced him to go to war with Conneticut. It was a brilliant move, however the RP died just like most others do.

It's not a flame, I just have been spoiled by the people over at AH.com. The maps made by the more experienced members there are incredible. I will admit, I can't make any maps as good as some of those guys; but the point that was lost in the rant was that if you want a good rp, make sure the maps represent real boundaries and logical choices.

Thing I think most people fall for is that California is in any way, shape, or form the great state it portrays itself as. I know better... If Washington let us do our own thing tomorrow - the Bay Area would fall into the sea 'cause it's godless, the interior and Orange Country would make a theocracy, LA would finally tear itself apart, Northern California would join up with Washington and Central California (Sacremento, Bakersfield ect) would just be like 'wtf' and do nothing.

Never really understood why people think we would get in our mini-vans and conquer the other states in the name of low-fat lattes and double frapatastics.

Which has no connection to Maryland's politics in 1860...

I think it's pretty clear that a large portion of the state sympathized with the Confederate cause, and many joined it individually even though their state remained in the Union. Whether or not it would have seceded sans Lincoln is somewhat open to interpretation, but from what I've read, I would say it is relatively likely.

From what I've read Maryland would have joined the south of not for federal militias sent in nearly immediately. The majority of the state's sympathies lay with Dixie. But Lee's invasion of the North soured the milk for them, as they say, since it turned the South's war of defense into one of agression. Having a 'foreign' army rampage across their state turned the majority against the south and all for naught, because we know how Lee's push into the North ended.

And yes, Oklahoma exists. But no one talks about it. It's like a festering herpe on a friend's lip. You see it and you know what it is, but you don't bring it up because they're ashamed enough without you rubbing it in their face. Cold sore my ass.

Because I DO WHATEVER I BLOODY WELL WANT AND DAMN THE CONSEQUENCES.

No. It's because this an intelligent community that I approve of and enjoy participating in. I don't really have time to devote to a major nation, so I refrained from claiming one. I also have no interest in roleplaying internal dissent in some backwater thirdworld nation that wouldn't require regular posting so, again, I refrained from claiming one.

I lurk and read alot of the roleplaying here and, occasionally, I leap in and attack a random argument like Maryland being pro Dixie or Yankee, 'Anarchism could work!!1!', or 'what's the worst song EVAR?!"
