Why is it we don't have some kind of mentor system? Compared to other geopolitical sims I've played in the past, this one is pretty involved and realistic. People coming here from things like NationStates and Earth X think they have carte blanche to do what they want with their nation, and don't necessarily understand that there are realistic limitations to what they do.

Really, you look at the new player experience, and it goes something like this:

- New guy comes in and grabs a nation
- New guy starts doing random stuff - "Coup! Massive change to foreign policy! War! Rarh!"
- A bunch of folks hammer on new guy saying "You can't do that, look at my eleventy billion citations! Noob!"
- If their english isn't good, they also get additional hits of "lern 2 spel"
- At this point, they either learn through the pain, or they leave.
- If they leave, people say "good riddance, I didn't like the way he dealt with x", or they say "Gosh, why did they leave?"
- If they stay, they gradually learn how things work. Then they're ready to lay the hammer down on newer players who haven't learned that, yet.

Seriously. New players. Mentors. Require major actions to go through the mentors for the first week or two. It's not a huge amount of work for the mentor (hell, they'd probably just tell the new player the same thing in private that they'd tell them in public), and the new player gets to learn how things work.

Oh, and just so it doesn't look like I'm saying "Admins, why aren't you handling this, you rotters", I'm volunteering to be a mentor.

The ones who learn through the pain are the best RPers and the people who turn into good players and vets.

Like Amzi. I did talk to Amzi mentor-style or whatever and that turned out well.

We ended up claiming nations that are on the brink of raining down nuclear annihilation upon each other. :o Oh, the happy memories ...

I think it's a great idea. Better than being thrown in at the deep end, especially as we move forward into the round and people have a lot of catching up to do in terms of RPs and so forth.

I think they should get toughened up, maybe not beaten around, but I thoughed it out. I was such a noob when I came in and after getting slapped around a bit, I am fairly good now.

I disagree. I think that'll put a lot of players off. Remember, people come here to have fun rather than endure :P

Having a more experienced player who you can turn to for suggestions and advice until you become a more integrated member of the sim is a great idea. I think this would be great for both helping to retain new members and improving their skills.

I kind of agree. I think I was...babied into this whole RP bit. And the ones who seek out to much babying, really don't turn out so good. And eventually, some become too reliable on other help.
But at the same time, we should...not so much slap people around. But point out minor flaws.

So perhaps a, mentorship sort of. But more of a "nah man, don't do that" in a PM. As opposed to a flame thread on how stupid (in more intelligent terms) an RPer is. You by far, were not slapped completely around.

Yeah, this is a good idea. I'd be happy to advise someone on decisions via AIM or something... it'd really help with some of the ridiculous stuff we've seen recently.

Taken was a good movie. Nuff said.

And yeah, the casual PM saying "no way man, thats kinda dumb"

is a much better idea than:

"YOU FUCKING IDIOT WTF DID YOU GO INVADE [insert nation here] FOR. YOU RETARD YOU DONT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO ATTACK [nation name]. SO WHY DONT YOU SIT BACK AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID. RETARD."

You get the picture. Just imagine in fancier words.
