I don't see anything up with female leaders and i'm not a woman either. Margaret Thatcher for example is admired by quite few even though she really angered some parts of society due to some of her actions, though I think she was more of a man than anyone. |

She's trying to be masculine and sound tough with her huntin' and her shootin' and her over the top Alaskan wilderness style way of doing things. She sounds pretty dumb, remarkably like George Bush, but I don't mind her for some reason. We need a reasonable high profile woman of politics in the UK in my opinion just to shake things up. (The three topics we keep replying to is like a relay chat lol). |

AGREED. Don't forget the CRAZY-HOT scale by Niel Patrick Harriss ![]() Anyhow want to hear the story about Canada's first female Prime Minister? Assumed office right before elections, after the elections she had lost 167 seats in Parliament. She was Prime Minister for a total of a bit over four months. Fun. |

See, because Argentina still think the Falklands are theirs, imagine if they invaded again and there was a Falklands War II, it'd be the oposite from the first one. 1982: President Leopoldo Galtieri (MAN) Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (WOMAN - WINNER) 2009: President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (WOMAN -WINNER ?) Prime Minister Gordon Brown (MAN) Would history repeat itself ?

I am among the other 6,853,199 people who share the region with you. Where do you live in the North West? Where I live, many would agree with Comedian Ricky Tomlinson when he spoke about Thatcher’s impact on the coal industry. “Where Mrs Thatcher is going very soon, she won’t need to worry about coal, because it will be roasting hot…and when it happens, I’ll be having a pint with the miners.” I personally don’t care either way. Thatcher was the women who brought super debt to the UK by selling off everything she could and creating an economy fuelled by personal debt and consumption. She also destroyed communities and a lot of people with her. Saying that. I find the Falklands campaign of 1982, to be perhaps the single greatest moment in British History of the Past 30 years. |

Rabble rousing over the Falklands is... weird, at the least. I mean, can it possibly end in any way other than the British destroying the entire Argentine Navy this time around? |

In 1982 it was a close run thing. It’s widely assumed by people who just look at the end result and think, “Britain was always going to win” that this was a walkover. It wasn’t. A few more weeks and the hulls of the British ships would crack. A year later and one of the Carriers would have been sold. Add that to how closely run the invasion was. If a carrier was hit or a myriad of other reasons the war would have been lost. If Argentina had been a bit smarter they would have won without a fight. They weren’t and now if they try again they will get a slap. Also the Argentineans thinking they could humiliate the Royal Marines acted like idiots. That just provoked massive anger from the population. Hell if there was not an invasion Thatcher would have been chucked out. Thanks to their invasion now the Falklands is well defended and will be protected. Even better London couldn’t have found the Falklands pre war and now they have found oil and lots of exporting sea life. The Falklands are an economic success story. All because the Argentina Junta tried to divert national attention. Well that backfired. Argentina lost everything when they invaded. They lost the people's openness to a new government. They gave Britain focus on the island and they gave it prosperity. We will keep the Falklands and if Argentina doesn't like it they can go to the UN. It’s a testament to the men on that taskforce that despite the adversity and odds been against us. We routed the ariges and sent them packing. “The Empire strikes back” it should be a patriotic event for all British people. We freed people from an oppressive military takeover and restored a healthy dose of national pride. Britain had lost itself in the 60s and 70s and found itself by giving Galtieri a kick up the arse, which also brought Democracy to Argentina. So we all won in the end! ![]() When Britain first, at Heaven's command Arose from out the azure main; This was the charter of the land, And guardian angels sang this strain: "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." The nations, not so blest as thee, Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall; While thou shalt flourish great and free, The dread and envy of them all. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful, from each foreign stroke; As the loud blast that tears the skies, Serves but to root thy native oak. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame: All their attempts to bend thee down, Will but arouse thy generous flame; But work their woe, and thy renown. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine: All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles thine. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." The Muses, still with freedom found, Shall to thy happy coast repair; Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd, And manly hearts to guard the fair. "Rule, Britannia! rule the waves: "Britons never will be slaves." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMRvZTk7QYE |

I was reading about the Falklands war on wikipedia not so long ago. "However, as of 2009 and as it has since the 19th century, Argentina shows no sign of relinquishing its claim. The claim remains in the Argentine constitution after its reformation in 1994." I wouldn't be surprised if they tried their luck again. |

Let them try it. If Thatcher threatened to Nuke a city, in 1982 we won't need bluster this time. The 1994 article says, "respectful of the way of life of their inhabitants and according to the principles of international law" Lets get this clear. Britain is richer then Argentina, more stable and freer. I know who I would pick as a Falklands Islander and have a gun put to the back of your head by officers who were involved in crimes against humanity back in Argentina has also made that clear in the mind of the people. Today we have Tornados, which will slaughter anything the Argentinean air force can rustle up. After the invasion we built a whole new Airbase. Their TA unit now is far better trained and an equipped as is the British army units deployed on the island. We also have a Type 42 destroyer. While this crisis may bring out nationalism and in the game I know Argentina is looking again at the Falklands however if they try anything other then nonviolence they will lose the people forever and lost a lot of equipment with it. |

Heh. On the issue of "woman leaders", would you say that there was any chance that Harriet Harman would be Labour leader / candidate in the elections (which will probably be sometime next year) , I mean, they've basically lost, so I think they may play a wild card...? |
