“That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind".

Yes Forty years ago on this very day July 20th 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon, with Michael Collins staying on Apollo 11. What a glorious moment for NASA, the United States and the wider world.

The Economist has an article on the US’s future Space program, timely of course. Have a check.

Well done to the United States, it s a moment rightly to be proud of, but where next? Moon then to Mars? Or straight to Mars? I think we must be moving forward in human space flight, Britain is thinking of starting its own program soon. What do you think?

The Government. I think we need our own. The European program is going nowhere fast. Its time we did something ourselves.

All this gallivanting off on space mission is a waste of money IMO now. We havent even finished exploring the Earth and we want to go to Mars. Who cares if we put a human on Mars or the Moon? It doesnt mean anything really.

I'm not saying cut NASA, just slim it down to what gives the highest returns--which doesnt involve manned missions to the Moon and Mars.

I agree. We (UK) doesn't need a space program. We still think we're superpower and we're not. If the government is thinking of scrapping Trident like people say they are, and if you're right in saying that the government is planning a space program, I say keep Trident. Some people who live in the UK don't even know what the UK is, they think we live in a place called "America", so NASA will do for me. :P

And.. If the Conservatives win, which is likely (even though theres chance it may not happen), I don't think they'd bother with a British space program either. I can see the headlines of the Tory newspapers right now if Labour waste money on a space mission.

+1

I always felt, one of the other two should have took the controls so he could have a little run around on the surface. Can you imagine for the rest of his life, when he says "Yep I was on the Apollo 11 mission." "Wow, what did it feel like walking on the moon?" "Well I stayed in the shuttle, I didn’t get to go out." "Oh."

Jack: A country that has nuclear warheads is a superpower. 'nuff said.
Sel: I'm personally of the opinion that we should try to colonise the Moon, and from there we can set up missions to say Mars and its moons. But I think that also we should strongly consider colonising the ocean floors. Just imagine! We could have a real life Atlantis! :D

Colonising is a little too far for me. The climate would be fucked when Cult Leader Sel sends in the drills! I would rather see a full exploration of the deep seabed. Lots of animals and planets could be found, which we have never seen before. That would be amazing.

NASA is already slimed down. Now they do little more then cheap but useful science missions. The moon landing inspired a generation. My family knew where they were when it happened. All I have of that feeling are 9/11 and 7/7 not the best things to remember where you were. We need something, which will be a legacy, a superhuman achievement. What better then getting to Mars? Because its next, because humanity since its birth has always scanned the heavens!

,20 Jul 2009 20.13.01] Some people going "wow" is not worth billions upon billions of dollars, in my opinion.

Can't disagree more strongly.

When people look back on the 20th century in the 22nd century if humanity has advanced, they wont look back at World War two (Well maybe the history geeks) or the fall of communism. They will look at the dramatic increase in public health and the moon landing.

The mission to the moon created millions of products, which give average man, the woman a different world to live in. Did you know between the Apollo Guidance Computer, used for the Apollo program, was the largest single consumer of integrated circuits between 1961 and 1965. That was a massive boost to computer chips; it set the groundwork for the Internet, Satellites? Phones? All from the moon missions.

To simply dismiss it as a waste of money is both wrong and on the verge of ignorance. Children across the world wanted to enter science because of the moon landings, it shown the world there was a way to have a rivalry between too superpowers which never entered conflict. It was a peaceful race. When people look back they will look back at the moon mission not at the economic crisis, as one of most important legacies of the world in our times.

To bring people together to go to the moon or indeed Mars will cost billions I bet, a lot. When it could be spent on schools or hospitals however building a hospital will not inspire the world. The images of the moon landing were transmitted across the world; my own mother was woken up and watched it with her whole family, as did a lot of people in the UK. Billions of dollars for a event which inspires the world to peaceful co-operation, careers in science and engineering and most importantly perhaps for the money conscious billions and trillions even of products and companies who build upon the work done among these programs.

Shuttles go up like 3 times a year at the moment. Does anyone really care? Not anymore. Because? They go to the International Space station. In 1969 the world watched as the rocket took off and it watched again with the man on the moon. If a Mars project was started and took off the world could watch again.

Going to the moon will provide more value for money over the long term and allow us to understand more about our universe and give a message that positive things can come through peaceful co-operation not just conflict. Which if that message is shown on every TV will do more then $5 billion on US hospitals etc.
