Interpreter. Too many people make this mistake.

An interpreter is for simultaneous speech. A translator is for documents. That is why the movie is not called The Translator.

In any case, without the French transcript or audio, there is not much we can speculate on. And the media has a tendency too jump to conclusions that are not logically possible to make.

I just watched the video and there is no way to really tell what the French speaker said without high tech sound software or better footage.
