Hmm... Speaking about this, I think that we could create a FAQ forum where those new privates who have any problems could ask us about it. It's like the other Maths forum where I went. We asked Maths questions and the professor there will answer our questions. I think it's a fairly interesting forum to create :great:

I think honda jazz's question has not been answered yet: Shall we greet officers and ncos when we meet each other not during the BB activities? My Dear NCOs and beloved senior ptes, what do you think?

You can greet Officer / NCO by just waving your hand and saying "Hello Sir" or "Hello Lcp/Cpl/Sgt/Ssgt" and no need to stand to attention and stamp your leg and shout "Evening SIR". Just normally greet by saying hello to show your respect to them. I think that is enough.

Juz remember only greet during any BB activities. Other places when not in the parade ground/any BB activities, just greet them like any other elders you see that you know.
Do not underestimate newbs, you were once one.

Wow.. that is very different from what I learnt. Definitely, this is 2nd Kuching new culture! I was taught to greet BB officers wherever I meet them. During my time, when we went to capt's house during Chinese NEw Year or saw Lt Bong in his shop, the first thing we did were to stand SEDIA to greet them. I learnt this from my seniors. Though some of lazy seniors refused to practise that, majority still follow paying compliment wherever you go since we are BB everywhere we go. That time, Some refused to greet NCOs outside BB because either they saw each other everyday or they thought they were too close to each other.

When I was in GRSS, if I had the chance to meet my honorable NCOs, I was very glad to stand sedia to greet them (Them include Sgt Toh Kui Seng, Mr Alex Chan, S/sgt Gilbert...). When i was in my form2, I also recalled that when I was eating noodle with my parents in Song Kheng Hai, Lt Bong and Madam came to eat, sitting next to my table. I was struggling:"should I greet?", "yes, this is what I was taught!", "but, shameful in front of public!!", "but nothing too shameful to be BB". With courage, I stood and greeted them. Everyone in that coffee shop looked strangely at me including my parent, but I had no regret - this is what I love to do as a BB. When I was promoted to L/Cpl in form3, some boys greeted me in canteen while I was with my scout friends. They were impressed by how sincere and wholehearted BB were. But in my form 5, my scout friends often said this:"BB today is different, not only they don't greet you, they see you like nobody in school".

I feel so sorry to my seniors and my officers, I have to admit that most 2nd kuchingers stopped practising this tradition- paying compliment to NCOs "outside BB" during my lancecorporalship 2001. And maybe no practice of paying compliment to officers outisde BB in the following year 2002. Sadly, when I was corporal, I even found out some officers didn't practise paying compliment. WO/S/sgt never greet LT/Cpt even during BB hours, not to mention non BB hours. How do they have others paying compliment while themselves set no examples?

I am not giving pressure to you guys to go back to that old tradition. But just want to let you know how BB used to be.
