Let's look at one of my favorite quotes...

Megaman 8 - "However, if you've grown up and cast these games aside with your Master System and G.I. Joe collection, you'll probably want to wait for the imminent 3D Mega Man." ~ IGN
http://psx.ign.com/articles/150/150561p1.htm

IGN also said Mischief Makers had great gameplay, yet gave it a 6.2 seemingly just because it was 2D.

Thank God 2D games are making a comeback thanks to handhelds and downloadable games.

Mischief Makers was awesome. I didn't really play NES or SNES so the 2D stuff on my shiny new N64 was just great for me. I wasn't into game review sites either, and I'm not sure anyone was at the time. Game critics had less of a voice back then so I'd like to say it didn't matter, however the shortage of 2D games around that time and shortly after kinda says otherwise.

Disgaea is the king of 2D gaming =P
Although I hate how people are biased on "3D > 2D", because "ZOGM GRAFIXS > ALL!"
I loved Mischief Makers. I played it a million times and I STILL play it off and on today!

Most people did not look at reviews or game critics opinions back then because most times, games were actually good--and not that expensive. Since the times have changed, people are looking to reviews to see if they want to buy a game.

I can see why IGN knocked it off for points for being 2D. I don't necessarily agree with it but I see why. Basically, games have moved into a new era as far as power, graphics and in this case, dimension. Being that games have gone from 2d to 3D since the PS/N64 era, to see another 2D Mega Man game is a bit disappointing.

You have to take into consideration what the reviewer was reviewing--that the game is great but it's no longer fresh. It's gone stale. The only probable way to refreshen it is to bring it to 3D.

Um... First, an RPG can never be king of 2D gaming. When you have games like Mario and Sonic that put Disgaea to shame from a 2D stance, it cannot be considered king. Maybe from a programming stance, sure. But actual gameplay for 2D, no.

Second, Disgaea is a pseudo-3D game anyway...

Yeah DL, Disgaea uses 3D generated worlds using 2D sprites. Not really 2D.

Prinny, from what I understand, is 2D though.

3D and 2D overall really don't matter too much in the grand scheme of things. It just changes how you play the game, so I don't think 1 is necessarily better than the other. It's just another aspect to consider when designing IMO

i dont a ratings should be hindered by what platform is chosen for the game. if the game is a 10/10 score for a 2-d game then its a 10 game. that is why they should also add in how long the game is/how hard the game is and the replay value as well as the price. though how hard a game is and the replay value should be in the total overall score teh lasat two shouldnt but are still very important when buying a game not so much playing the game

I agree with this.

2D or 3D is ultimately a design choice. Whether it was a good or bad design is a factor we see when the game is released.

What I think IGN was getting at in this instance, and I'm not necessarily supporting it, is that with games like Zelda: OoT and Mario 64 and other 2D games that went 3D (even Pitfall went 3D for a game), it was strange to see a Mega Man game that was so close to an SNES version. If the SNES was still shipping games by that time, it should have been on it is basically what they were saying. Or in other words, it felt a little dated. Still a great game, but dated.

Heck, Metroid didn't get a 3D rendition until the Gamecube. Probably cause Nintendo couldn't figure out a viable way to put Samus in 3D and I'm sure they wanted all their franchises to go 3D in some way for their first few games.

yea its just shitty reviewing in the end which makes reading the review that much more important. i still thinkusing one person a game is crazy they need it least 3.

SK, yeah, I see why they could dock some points for being stale, however they didn't just dock points because it was stale. They called 2D gaming childish (quite harshly), which is a stupid and hostile thing to say. It's unprofessional. However, you're right, thankfully reviewing (or the Internet for that matter) wasn't that popular back then.
