Install/Run Applications from External HDD?

My current laptop is running low on hard drive space, so I'm going to purchase a 320GB Seagate External HDD. I plan on using it to store files, documents, etc, but I'm not sure if it's possible for me to install/run applications such as iTunes off of an external HDD. Does anyone here know?

I can probably clear up a few GB of space (maybe 3?) by transferring all of my standard files to the external HDD, but that will only leave me with about 5GB (I currently have 2GB of free space) to install applications, which I worry might not be enough.

It's certainly POSSIBLE, and as long as they're installed correctly I don't THINK there should be much difficulty.

It should be fine. I have ran programs off of a flash drive before without problems.

YES! I was afraid I wouldn't be able to. :) I guess we'll find out for sure when I actually order the HDD.
