I'm thinking about using LocatePC to tract the location of my laptop in case it is ever stolen. I'm not too worried about it being stolen, but I don't want to take any chances. I've read that LocatePC will send me an email giving my laptop's IP address, etc whenever it connects to the internet. However, in order for this to work, I believe I would have to create a guest account so that the thief would have access to the internet. Is it possible to have the computer automatically connect to a wireless network when it boots up or reaches the login screen? |

I don't think so, but I'm not 100% sure. Try looking it up on google or something, see if it turns up any stones. You could always try to contact the creators of the product, and see what exactly you have to do to get it to work. Alternatively, see if you can find some kind of manual for it. |

Not worth the effort. For one thing, how would you plan to recover the stolen laptop based on location alone? Are you expecting someone to steal your laptop? |

i am sure everyone would agree with me on this but its probably better to invest in getting your laptop rigged with a bomb that way when they steal it you can trigger it and boom! you win the world wins we all win. |

What effort? It's just a quick install of a program. I'm not really expecting for it to be stolen, but I will be in a campus-like environment soon, except with less mature teenagers who won't all have computers, and I don't want to take any chances. And I'm not sure I understand your question....if I have the location of the laptop, I can go to the location and recover it. BTW, this program is free. Edited by js2393, Jul 13 2009, 11:41 PM.

Some guy jacks your laptop, so you locate it by IP and you find the city they live in. Or does the program narrow it down to the house? What are you gonna do? Knock on the door "hey you stole my laptop". |

If law enforcement is involved, I think after obtaining the IP address you could get the actual location of the computer through the ISP. Not exactly sure though. |
