Proper Grammar in the Internet; It sounds silly, but read on

The Internet is the leading source of bad grammar in the world. It's true. Think about it: :some people don't care about capitalization, spelling, punctuation and whatnot. Abbreviations dominate the internet with "IM speak" such things as "lol", "wtf", "brb", "rofl", "gtg", and other abbreviations that your parents use since they think it makes them sound cool, and, in actuality, when used in real life, makes you sound like a complete idiot.

Computer gaming has a great impact on grammar in the Internet, "noob", "nab", "nub", and other variations of "newbie" are used, "TK", "l2p", among others, are jargon only known by a seemingly occult style society in games such as World of Warcraft.

So point of debate:

Do you think that proper grammar should be enforced in the internet?

Here are some views on the topic:
Some people aren't great typers, and use IM speak to abbreviate everything. They find it faster to use IM speak than typing out the whole word. Imagine if the world had to use "Ahahahahahahaha" instead of "lol".

However, this sometimes affect real life, were people speak in this IM speak. Example being that "IDK MY BFF JILL" Cingular commercial.

Other just don't care; they tlk liek thiz becuz they thnk its cul 2 not use gramar.

Let's put it this way:
Which makes you sound smarter and more mature?

"hay guyz i just got teh most prety thing evar"
Or...
"Hey guys, I just got something pretty awesome."

Since most of the time were not seeing people's faces, we see how people write and their grammar usage as a form of maturity. There maybe a person who can post the most epic things in the world, but can't since his grammar is incoherent.

Were not trying to be grammar-Nazis, as many people call those who bother people about their English grammar, but there is a time that some of these things are incomprehensible.

I disagree. Short forms rule and sometimes people don't have time to use proper grammar on the internet. As long as you can read it somewhat thats all that matters. Its not so much the spelling that gets me as much as its the idea people try to get through and to be honest its just an enevitiable evolution of language.

I don't mind improper grammar. However, I rarely use it because...idk, it just doesn't fit me. I think the main reason people use so much internet slang is because it's how they talk in real life. I type like I talk for the most part. It's easier for me to type "you" instead of "u" because I actually have to think about pressing the "u" key. I don't have to think about it when I type "you."

It's really annoying though when people are obviously trying to sound cool and butcher the english language by typing things like "hay guyz i ju$t got teh most prety thing evar." Abbreviations like "idk" or "btw" or "u" are fine IMO. :P

I don't mind improper grammar unless someone is clearly going out of their way to use it. For example, anyone that says 'meh' instead of 'me' should be stomped in the face.

Yeah this. My cousins/sister actually use the wrong spelling when it's the same amount of letters anyway.

Here's a blog that I posted on MySpace a while ago

Quote:

Since e-mail was first developed, countless abbreviations, emoticons, and substitutes have been created to help ease the task of typing. And with these shortened, grammatically-incorrect phrases came egotistical, pompous, elitist f***heads who think they're the s*** because they happen to not use those on their super fantastic MySpace profiles.

Are you one of those? Do you refuse to use incorrect or sloppy grammar and punctuation because you have it in your mind that you're somehow cooler/smarter than those who do?

Or are you one of those who uses ridiculously incorrect grammar and punctuation to the point where it's practically incomprehensible?

What's the fine line? How do you type if you don't want to sound like a pretentious asshole?

I've set out on a journey to discover the secret. I've gone to many corners of the Internet (except 4chan, never will I go there) and met all sorts of people. And it is very true that you can tell a lot about a person just by how they type. But there's a lot of thought involved with it.

The ones who use seemingly perfect grammar every time they type are usually awkward scene kids who have nothing better to do but wag their huge e-dicks in your face. They're the ones who will comment on a bulletin only to tell you that you spelled "especially" wrong or that your forgot to put a question mark at the end or you used your instead of you're. The thing is, though, is that most of these kids don't even use correct grammar/punctuation anyway. Grammar has so many rules that I'm sure this sentence has some kind of error in it. For example, look at the penultimate sentence in the last paragraph. It starts with "and", and we all know that that is unacceptable! But wait, am I allowed to use the word "that" twice in a row like I just did? Can sentences start with "but"? Argh!

Honestly, quit trying to be a huge grammar pro because more than likely you're doing it wrong. I try my best to use correct grammar on my blogs because it's more formal than a comment or message, but I know that they probably have tons of errors. I just don't have the time nor the care to write four rough drafts before I publish them.

Grammar pricks tend to overdo it. They like to use dashes a lot (video-game) and think that they're the biggest pros because they use brackets (like [this]). pc4pc becomes "Picture for picture comment?" Look, no one cares if you write everything you publish on the Web into Microsoft Word first and have thesaurus.com in your Firefox's bookmarks. Every unnecessary dash that you use is another stroke on your colossal grammar dick.

But then there are those on the complete opposite side of the spectrum that are so ridiculously bad at the grammar game that you wonder how America is a leading nation when its kids can't even speak their own native f***ing language.

Here's a really old video of mine that attracts legions of such people: http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=p2Jhocm_pjA&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3Dp2Jhocm_pjA%26feature%3Dchannel_page

tl;dr? I'll pick out some of the good ones for you.

All you need is to get Dugtrio Lv.50 that have the ability area trap something like that. Teach your Dugtrio Mudslap, Doubleteam, sand attack and Earthquake if I were you I wouldn't use Earthquake because it cause to much damage to Raikou..what I'm trying to tell you people is when you got Raikou trap try reduce it's accuracy while you increase your evasiveness with Doubleteam so Raikou's roar will likely to miss this increase your chance of catching it.

..how many Master ball have in fire Red?? i got only one..is there more?? plss answer..

(Most of the comments that I've made on that video were from when I was a grammar prick so don't pay too much attention to them)

I think those comments really just sum it up. Some people just put absolutely NO effort into what they type and it's really quite disgusting. I wonder if people know where the shift button is. I wonder if people ever took first grade grammar. I wonder how people like this talk in real life.

Here's the other thing: There's NO excuse for spelling wrong. I'm not saying it's a terrible crime if you use two L's instead of one, but no matter how good or bad your grammar and punctuation is, spelling should never be an issue. You should also always capitalize "I" too. You're probably going to make a few mistakes every now and then which is just fine (I've probably made a few in this blog), but if you type "acually" instead of "actually" and you clearly notice the mistake, there's really no reason not to. Misspelled words say to me that I'm too lazy to go and change that because I live in the USWAIA.

If you want to reduce your spelling errors, get Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. It has a built-in spellcheck.

So we've seen both extremes and we know that they're both dumb. What's the fine line? What's the acceptable way to type?

I have no right to dictate to you how you should type. Do whatever you want. But just know that if you decide to spew out dashes and semi-colons or if you use more than three exclamation marks after a sentence, I won't have much respect for you.

So there you have it. I'm done. If you have any super cool example of stuck-up/revolting grammar, post it in the comments!!! We'd all like to see ;)

I always try to use correct grammar on forums etc., because I actually have time to think about what I'm posting and there's no reason to make it more difficult for other people to read.

On messengers I might type less intelligently depending on who I'm talking to. In video games like DotA I type like a complete moron because I have more important things to concentrate on than proper grammar B)

I talk like I type, for the most part. There are certain abbreviations that I'll use occasionally, but usually when I type them, I'm thinking the actual thing. (i.e., when I type "lol" I'm really thinking "haha" or something less enthusiastic. When I type "wtf," in that situation in real life, I'd actually say "what the f***" (just not censored).)

But it doesn't really bother me how other people type, unless it's something that is total nonsense. Basically, everything I read or type is translated to or from a voice in my head. That's a little harder on here because I don't know what most of you sound like, but when I'm on AIM talking to my rl friends, I hear everything they type in my head in their voice. So poor grammar isn't usually a problem for me because I'll immediately understand what they were saying, hear them say it, respond in my head, and then type out what I hear myself saying.

That being said, I'll still jump on people occasionally for poor grammar or spelling just for the fun of it.

tl;dr: Talking to yourself makes s*** weird.

Pretty much the only abbreviation I use online is lol. I don't understand the point. It's only going to affect your grammar skills and make you look dumber, why would you want that? Although, I'm a very fast typer, I guess that helps.

I do think that proper grammer is important. but the abbriviations make it faster to talk online like u were acctually talking to each other; though excess of abbreviations does make it people seem a little less educated.

I only use those abbreviations when I'm trying to fit a text or a tweet within 160/140 characters. Other than that, I don't think I've ever used any acronym outside of "lol" and "wtf" on the internet unless I was just trying to be funny.

I don't mind improper grammar. Bad spelling annoys me more than bad grammar. I remember when Dark Link 101 posted here, it would drive me crazy. What was worse was that that's the way he typed. Either way, it's annoying most of the time.

I mind my grammar when I'm posting on a forum where my post will be read and judged and scrutinized by THOUSANDS if not dozens of readers. I use Firefox's built-in spellchecker, and I use capitalization and punctuation. I sometimes reread my post a couple times over before hitting "Add Reply". But on MSN or in texts, or when I'm playing a game of DotA and I need to type some quick commands to my team, I use shorthand appropriate for the medium.

I'm not sure why I explained how I post in a post, though.
