The Internet is the leading source of bad grammar in the world. It's true. Think about it: :some people don't care about capitalization, spelling, punctuation and whatnot. Abbreviations dominate the internet with "IM speak" such things as "lol", "wtf", "brb", "rofl", "gtg", and other abbreviations that your parents use since they think it makes them sound cool, and, in actuality, when used in real life, makes you sound like a complete idiot. Computer gaming has a great impact on grammar in the Internet, "noob", "nab", "nub", and other variations of "newbie" are used, "TK", "l2p", among others, are jargon only known by a seemingly occult style society in games such as World of Warcraft. So point of debate: Do you think that proper grammar should be enforced in the internet? Here are some views on the topic: Some people aren't great typers, and use IM speak to abbreviate everything. They find it faster to use IM speak than typing out the whole word. Imagine if the world had to use "Ahahahahahahaha" instead of "lol". However, this sometimes affect real life, were people speak in this IM speak. Example being that "IDK MY BFF JILL" Cingular commercial. Other just don't care; they tlk liek thiz becuz they thnk its cul 2 not use gramar. Let's put it this way: Which makes you sound smarter and more mature? "hay guyz i just got teh most prety thing evar" Or... "Hey guys, I just got something pretty awesome." Since most of the time were not seeing people's faces, we see how people write and their grammar usage as a form of maturity. There maybe a person who can post the most epic things in the world, but can't since his grammar is incoherent. Were not trying to be grammar-Nazis, as many people call those who bother people about their English grammar, but there is a time that some of these things are incomprehensible. |

I disagree. Short forms rule and sometimes people don't have time to use proper grammar on the internet. As long as you can read it somewhat thats all that matters. Its not so much the spelling that gets me as much as its the idea people try to get through and to be honest its just an enevitiable evolution of language. |

I don't mind improper grammar. However, I rarely use it because...idk, it just doesn't fit me. I think the main reason people use so much internet slang is because it's how they talk in real life. I type like I talk for the most part. It's easier for me to type "you" instead of "u" because I actually have to think about pressing the "u" key. I don't have to think about it when I type "you." It's really annoying though when people are obviously trying to sound cool and butcher the english language by typing things like "hay guyz i ju$t got teh most prety thing evar." Abbreviations like "idk" or "btw" or "u" are fine IMO.

I don't mind improper grammar unless someone is clearly going out of their way to use it. For example, anyone that says 'meh' instead of 'me' should be stomped in the face. |

Yeah this. My cousins/sister actually use the wrong spelling when it's the same amount of letters anyway. |

I always try to use correct grammar on forums etc., because I actually have time to think about what I'm posting and there's no reason to make it more difficult for other people to read. On messengers I might type less intelligently depending on who I'm talking to. In video games like DotA I type like a complete moron because I have more important things to concentrate on than proper grammar

I talk like I type, for the most part. There are certain abbreviations that I'll use occasionally, but usually when I type them, I'm thinking the actual thing. (i.e., when I type "lol" I'm really thinking "haha" or something less enthusiastic. When I type "wtf," in that situation in real life, I'd actually say "what the f***" (just not censored).) But it doesn't really bother me how other people type, unless it's something that is total nonsense. Basically, everything I read or type is translated to or from a voice in my head. That's a little harder on here because I don't know what most of you sound like, but when I'm on AIM talking to my rl friends, I hear everything they type in my head in their voice. So poor grammar isn't usually a problem for me because I'll immediately understand what they were saying, hear them say it, respond in my head, and then type out what I hear myself saying. That being said, I'll still jump on people occasionally for poor grammar or spelling just for the fun of it. tl;dr: Talking to yourself makes s*** weird. |

Pretty much the only abbreviation I use online is lol. I don't understand the point. It's only going to affect your grammar skills and make you look dumber, why would you want that? Although, I'm a very fast typer, I guess that helps. |

I do think that proper grammer is important. but the abbriviations make it faster to talk online like u were acctually talking to each other; though excess of abbreviations does make it people seem a little less educated. |

I only use those abbreviations when I'm trying to fit a text or a tweet within 160/140 characters. Other than that, I don't think I've ever used any acronym outside of "lol" and "wtf" on the internet unless I was just trying to be funny. I don't mind improper grammar. Bad spelling annoys me more than bad grammar. I remember when Dark Link 101 posted here, it would drive me crazy. What was worse was that that's the way he typed. Either way, it's annoying most of the time. |

I mind my grammar when I'm posting on a forum where my post will be read and judged and scrutinized by THOUSANDS if not dozens of readers. I use Firefox's built-in spellchecker, and I use capitalization and punctuation. I sometimes reread my post a couple times over before hitting "Add Reply". But on MSN or in texts, or when I'm playing a game of DotA and I need to type some quick commands to my team, I use shorthand appropriate for the medium. I'm not sure why I explained how I post in a post, though. |
