Starting tomorrow, I'll be attempting to go 120 hours (five days) with no sleep whatsoever. I want to break the world record of eleven days over the summer, but for now I want to see if I can handle five. Sleep deprivation has no long term effects, as seen by Randy Gardner who stayed up 264 hours (eleven days) at seventeen years old for a science fair project. Tony Wright stayed up for 266 hours and also reported no long term effects. Peter Tripp went for eight days in 1959, but used stimulants like caffeine and suffered long term effects as a result. I don't know if I'll make the whole five days but I'll be trying my best. I'll be eating a lot of starches like spaghetti and rice and drink mainly water and juice, with not too much sugar. To keep me up, I'll be playing a lot of Smash and I'm going to try to accomplish a speedrun on Rogue Squadron 2. I might start hallucinating by the fourth or fifth days, which'll be pretty cool if you ask me. I once stayed up for three nights straight and I wasn't even trying. I wasn't tired and I slept normally on the fourth night. I was in school at the time so I really don't understand how I wasn't tired at all. Maybe I'll be able to utilize that skill again for these five days. I'll be updating my status in this topic. Wish me luck! |

Like I said, I'm not using stimulants, including energy drinks. Thanks for the suggestion though |

I've heard of a scientist who actually wanted to know what the effect of not sleeping was so he forced himself awake for about 120 hours. Around this point, eyes open and awake, he went into REM (Rapid Eye Movement, for those who don't know, and also the type of sleep during which we dream). The experience destroyed the scientist's brain, driving him insane. Anyway good luck. |

What's his name? I heard that you'll die sooner from lack of sleep than you will lack of food or water. But that could be an old wives tale. Either way Bacon I hope you know what you're doing! |

Well, nothing bad happened to Gardner, Wright, or Tripp. This one lady, Maureen Weston, is thought to have been up for eighteen days during a rocking chair marathon. I'm pretty sure I won't die or anything

http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/display/article/10168/54471?verify=0 The problem is that the dangers of sleep deprivation are not necessarily in the long term mental functions, but what you might do to yourself before you recover. That article notes that the effects of sleep deprivation mimic those of psychosis. Psychosis itself is not inherently dangerous, meaning that it is not like diabetes where the disease can directly cause your physical harm. However, the effects of it can cause you to physically harm yourself. Is it possible that you can do this without anything major happening? Yes. If you put a mentally unstable person into regular society with no monitoring, there is a very good chance he or she will survive a 5 day period. But it's also entirely possible that you do something to harm yourself or someone else. I wouldn't do this without making sure that you have close supervision, and I don't think you have that in your current condition. Nix, I don't think you can die directly from no sleep, but I do believe it would be possible to go without sleep for a long period of time, collapse from exhaustion, sleep for an extremely long period of time, and die or suffer serious effects from malnutrition or dehydration while you're asleep. |

Well then I suppose it is possible. I didn't actually look into that at all, I was just guessing based on the fact that none of the stuff I read about sleep deprivation when looking up the stuff for the previous two paragraphs said anything about a risk of death on top of the hallucinations and paranoia. EDIT: HOLY s*** So obviously the last word I typed when I finished this post the first time was "paranoia." I hit post and switched to another tab, and hit my Stumble button. The page that pops up? "Computer Stupidities: Paranoia" I'm afraid to turn around. Edited by ptfreak, Oct 4 2009, 08:35 PM.

7 days with out food is fatal, and I believe it is 5 days without water is fatal. You will sooner die from those before you die from lack of sleep. |

I don't believe that's true. If you have water but no food, you can last longer than 7 days, assuming that you're healthy to begin with. |
