Learning the Ropes
|
Brady was sitting on the edge of his dock, the one owned by his family, jeans rolled up slightly so he could dangle one leg in the water, his guitar in his arms as he played softly, humming along to the Jack Johnson song. "There's traffic in the sky and it doesn't seem to be getting much bettter There's kids playing games on the pavement drawing waves on the pavement mmhmmm Shadows of the planes on the pavement mmhmmm Its enough to make me cry but that don't seem like it would make it feel better Maybe its a dream and if i scream it will burst at the seams Whole place would fall in to pieces and then they'd say "Well how could we have known?" I'll tell them its not so hard to tell no no no You keep adding stones Soon the water will, be lost in the well, mmm..." |

Learning the Ropes

Elizabeth had been dragged to Willow Docks for a bit of family time. She groaned as they got out of the car, pulling out the chairs and cooler. She lugged the cooler to one of the docks and dropped it with a thud. She wiped the sweat away from her forehead and looked to her left. Another dock, but this one had a boy, about 17 maybe 18, sitting right on the very far edge of it. She focused in on him, hoping to distinguish a few of his features. He was tall, built and had a slight tan. He wore a black beanie, and some jeans rolled up so he could feel the water on his foot. He was playin the guitar and singing rather beautifully. He turned to face her and she looked away, embarrassed. She avoided looking at him for as long as possible, but gave in and peeked over. He was still staring at her intently. |

Brady kept playing, but not singing, just watching this girl. She was peculiar. A human, judging by her scent, but she was lovely. She appeared to be with her family, made up of a mother and a sister. Her sister looked a lot like her, and appeared to be the same age as his own sister, Lulu. He watched them for a while before calling over. "Hey. You guys need any help over there?" his voice was smooth, melodic, and he wondered if he sounded like a vampire. Oh well, no harm...at least I'm not barking! he thought to himself jokingly as he waited for an answer. |

Elizabeth was caught by surprise when he'd yelled out and asked if they needed help. His voice was masculine and smooth. Her insides melted as he looked over, even from afar she could see his piercing blue eyes. So beautiful, she thought. He had a boyish look to him, and yet he was a man. She blushed furiously and smiled, looking down. Her mother graciously accepted his offer and thanked him over and over for his kindness. He came over, leaving his guitar on the dock. "I'm Elizabeth," she said, holding out a pale, near white hand. She self-consciously shook his bigger, more tanned hand. "Thank you so much for helping," she said smiling at him warmly. |

Brady smiled back, his grin wide and white. "Not a problem, miss. So where am I needed? I'm Brady, by the way. Nice to meet you, Elizabeth," he said, shaking her hand gently. He was careful not to squeeze too tight; he didn't want to hurt her. |

Elizabeth smiled up at him, his hand was unusally hot. She felt her palm sweating and self-consciously let go of his hand, wiping it on her jeans. "Oh, I just need some help with this cooler," she said, kicking it softly. It was heavy as heck, filled with ice and food and drinks. "If it isn't too heavy, would you mind taking it over there to my sister and mum?" She asked pleasantly. |

"Heavy? Heavy isn't in my vocabulary," he said, laughing slightly as he leaned down and picked up the cooler with one hand, seemingly effortlessly. He carried it over to Elizabeth's mother and little sister and set it down. "That all? Or is there something else I can do for the ladies?" he asked kindly, far away from flirtatiously, with a wide smile on his face. |

Elizabeth grinned and chuckled, punching his arm. His whole body was warm and rather large. "Nah, but if you like, you can spend some time with us, if you don't have anything else to do that is. I mean, you don't have to if you don't want to it's-" Then she stopped, realzing then that she was rambling. She felt her cheeks glow as she gestured at a corner of the picnic rug to sit on. "Or if you want, we could go for a walk," she said, looking at her mum. She shrugged and turned away, eating. Her little sister was uninterested in the whole thing, playing with her gameboy. "Guess it's just you and me then," she mumbled. Edited by Elizabeth Garner, Jun 1 2008, 03:45 PM.

Brady laughed. "Sounds good to me," he said, gesturing for her to go ahead. He wondered where Lulu was today... Probably off somewhere, making trouble, as usual. At least Daisy and Van were okay with it. "Actually, I've gotta get my guitar home before the fog comes in later, and knowing me, I'll forget it. Would you like to come with me back to my house? It's just down the road here," he offered as he picked up his guitar and slung the strap over one shoulder, waiting for her response. "It'll only take a second," he promised hopefully. He did need to get his guitar home, but he didn't want to expose Elizabeth to his parents. Sure, they were cool, but that would come later, once they were at least friends. Maybe she could wait on the porch? |

Elizabeth didn't hesitate to come with him, she wanted to be his friend. He was so down-to-earth, which is what she wished she could be. "Oh I don't mind waiting on the porch or something, if it's too uncomfortable with your parents" she said smiling hopefully. She took the sudden silence to study his face better. He had nice lips, in shape and colour. Of course his eyes were a million times more gorgeous up close. He had clear, tanned skin. He had a smallish nose, but it fit him nicely. His hair was a light, sandy brown colour. It was longish, and yet somehow short. She sighed. |

"Perfect. And nah, it's not uncomfortable. My parents are just...eccentric," he said, smiling crookedly. It was far from a perfect fit, but close enough, right? "My mom is a health freak, my dad only eats chicken and turkey, he's a partial vegetarian, all the food in our house at any given time is either vegan or uber healthy. And my little sister...well, let's just say she breaks off from the norm," he chuckled at the memory of his little sister's first phasing, only a few short months ago, and how she'd refused to hunt anything other than birds. "We also have quite a few pets...Paco and Rusty are the boy dogs, and Haze is the Queen mother of two litters," he said. "Then there's the cats...Skye's the King, Zoey's the Queen, and the only kittens we've kept of theirs are Azure, their son, and Maple, their daughter. Actually, come to think of it, Zoey should be due any day now..." he added thoughtfully, remembering something Daisy had told him about more kittens. "And of course Lulu's got her bunny, Sunshine, and I have a pet raccoon named Kitten. So, yeah, our family's a bit strange, you could say," only then did he realize that he'd given her the names of every single pet they owned. Oh well. he thought calmly.

Elizabeth stood there, opened mouthed and stunned. She had tried as hard as she could to keep up, but lost track after the first couple of names. All she gathered was that his parents were eccentric, his dad only ate chicken and turkey and his little sister was the same as his mother, healthy and eccentric. "Well isn't that just...something," she said, the last word breaking half way through. She smiled up at him, uncertain of how to react to his naming of the pets. |

Brady chuckled. "Yep. Like I said, our family is a bit strange. Well, this is it," he stopped in front of a fairly large house, two stories, with bay windows and a perfect view of the lake. The door was open, and the doormat said 'Welcome Home!'. "You can come in, if you want," Brady offered, stepping through the doorway. Even from outside, the sound of a lovely voice and loud music could be heard coming from the kitchen. "Daisy!" he called out, and the music cut off. "Oh, Brady honey! You're back!" a young-looking woman who was about six inches shorter than Brady at 5'5'', with long, curly, goldish brown hair that hung to her waist, wearing a perfectly woven crown of fresh flowers on her head peered out of the kitchen. Upon seeing Elizabeth, the woman smiled and stepped out, drying her hands on her flowery apron. "And you brought a friend!" Daisy's skin was lightly tanned, nearly the same shade as Brady's, and her eyes were a warm, honey amber as she walked closer, feet bare. "Yeah, this is Elizabeth. Elizabeth, this is my mom," he introduced. "Elizabeth! What a lovely name. Please, come in. Are you hungry?" Daisy offered as Brady started up the stairs. "I'll just be a second!" he called down.

Elizabeth hesitantly stepped closer to the house, it was lovely and, compared to her tiny house, massive. She smiled ever so slightly, trying not to seem too excited, even though her heart was going a million miles an hour. She jumped when she saw a beautiful young-looking woman, who was apparently Brady's mother, but could have easily been his older sister. "It's nice to meet you..Diasy?" She said, unsure of whether she had gotten the name right. She prayed she had. He had invited her inside, but she didn't know whether she should accept his offer or not. "No thank you, I'm quite alright," she answered Diasy quickly, smiling. She decided what the hell, she may as well and followed him inside. His house was beautifully furnished, and even bigger on the inside than on the outside. She felt like a fish out of water and shifted uncomfortablely from foot to foot. |

"Alright then. You just let me know if you need anything, okay?" Daisy offered, smiling as she disappeared back inside the kitchen, the music going back on. Brady came thumping down the stairs, his guitar seemingly gone, and laughed as he reached the bottom. "Daisy! No music when we have guests!" the music turned off. "Oh, but, aren't you two leaving?" Daisy asked. Brady chuckled. "Yeah. You got lucky this time! See you soon. Oh, any idea where Lulu is?" he asked. "Out running around, most likely. She'll find you soon enough," Daisy answered. "Alright. Bye!" Brady smiled apologetically at Elizabeth before starting out, pulling her with him by one hand. "Come on. Let's walk around the lake," he suggested, tugging her down his driveway and towards the docks again.
