Artist: Shystie Album: Diamond In The Dirt Year Released: 2004 Reviewer: Joel "EIB" Anonymous I've been listening to this album since 2004 so i am used to its ups and downs now. It was one of my favourite albums as soon as i heard it so i will now get into a fair unbiased review. Intro: This is very simple, plain talking about the experiences of the music industry and friends and family lost, it sets the tone for the album. Rating: N/A One Wish: Well for the first track on the album we've gone into a UK Urban classic instantly, personal favourite of mine, production is hot, delivery is there and importantly so are the lyrics. Rating: 5/5 Gutter: Never was a fan of this track, hook can be catchy, production is average, lyrics and delivery are the best thing about it, the track is too long, needed to be about 3 minutes. Rating: 3/5 Step Bac: This track is very popular with Shystie fans and Grime fans in general, i liked it more about a year ago, but still it is a very strong Grime track, Fireworkz did their job, Shystie delivered well, lyrics on point again, the whole thing is catchy, it didn't need to drag on so long though as been as it finished at just under 3 minutes, it goes on for over another minute. Rating: 4/5 Woman's World (Gurlz Stand Up): Not the type of track a young man like myself would usually like, but you can't help but like this, the production is on point, and we're noticing Shy has a knack for catchy hooks and dynamic imaginative verses, this is definetly an album highlight visualising if women ran the world like men... unshaven... hairy, you got the picture. Rating: 4/5 Questions (Game Show): Another imaginative track set as a game show with Shystie getting interviewed by a strange presenter with audience banter in the background, the only downside to the track for me is that it doesn't have much replay value, even though it is clever, still a fan favourite though. Rating: 3.5/5 Make It Easy: This is probably my 2nd favourite track on the album, the production with the sample is pretty amazing, the verses are emotional, the hook is catchy, this deserved to chart a lot higher than it did, another UK classic. Rating: 5/5 Unfinished Bizzness: Well... this really is not my type of track at all... too watered down, the first real slip up on the album so far, the whole impending sex/resisting sex track just ain't my cup of tea... personal preferrence. Rating: 2/5 Bank Robbery Feat. Ron, E Redeyez: Concept track, the production goes pretty hard, not a fan of the guest though, the hook is pretty agressive, production makes this track. Rating: 3.5/5 Get Loose: Club track, a good effort at one too, the hook is catchy, the production is done well, Shystie's delivery is strange and unpredictable, but appealing. Rating: 3/5 Can't Play: Didn't think much of this track when i first got the album, its grown on me since, the production is clever with the whole opera vocals fading in and out, this also appears to be the fastest flowing track on the album, lyrically nice also. Rating: 4/5 Skit: Random child giving us a tiny keep your head up type speech. Rating: N/A Somedayz: This is my 3rd favourite track on the album, deep track about family and friends etc. the production is strong, lyrics are the strongest part... its a perfect way to end the album. Rating: 5/5 Bonus tracks ArmsHouse and Juiced: Would of been better left off the album, they slightly ruin the impact of the last track, not a fan of bonus tracks. Conclusion: This is a very enjoyable album with a lot of tracks to come back to, a very strong debut, i consider it one of the top 5 UK Urban albums of all-time, i will give it two final ratings, one on a global scale and one on a national scale, the global scale compares it to all Urban albums from around the world such as the US, National puts it up against only other UK urban albums. National Rating: 4.5/5 Global Rating: 3.5/5 Rating system: 1: Pure trash, no stand-out moments, bad in everysingle way 2: Very mediocore, few moments worth hearing 3: average/above average, stand out moments, one or two slip ups 4: Powerful album, not classic but something worth having in your collection, falls short of classic. 5: Classic, basicly complete in everysingle way. |
