i agree, the main thing is to be there, however it is a good excuse to wear your good clothes. Yea it must just be a tradition, but i do dress up a bit anyways, but i wouldn't care if people didn't.

this was a problem in the early church, were wealthy christians were dripping in jewelary and fancy haristyles, mostly women, drawing attention to themsleves, the bible says this is wrong and they should be humble. therefore, i beleive you should dress respectfully and be well dressed, but not over the top lke a fashion freak and draw attention to yourslef, on the other hand i feel you should not come into church dressed like youve been through a hedge backwards, for u are Christs representative on earth and are there to worship him, how dress gives an indcication of what you are like. :)

hmmm...see if we think like that then are we not judging people?

how about this one... i was at church once and a guy came in dressed in full blown motorbike leathers, helmet under his arm.. he wasnt clean shaven and his hair was wild.. everyone stared at him in disbelief, as the men were all in suits and the women were all in their suits and skirts.. ( im a bit of a lover of bikes though so i was sitting thinking this is pretty cool!)
i heard some people beside me and actually most of the ones around me talking.. things like "i cant believe hes wearing that", "who would come to church dressed in that?" "thats terrible"

so throughtout the sermon he kept getting looks.. until the minister introduved the guest speaker.. the man in the leathers got up and went to the front of the church and preached such an amazing captivating sermon everyone was enthralled!

i guess my question was to challenge us all to think beyond clothes, beyond appearance, we're told not to judge others and we do that ok-ish with non christians.. atleast thats what we seem to devote our time to.. but with christians why do we always seem to be a bit harsher? i dunno.. was just some thoughts

good point alibi :)
wow that would be a bit scundering for the congregation when the biker got up to preach
just goes to show u how stereotyped even the christians are! sad really...
I would'nt go overboard but 'respectable' clothes would be a good idea. Like for boys at least a shirt would do and maybe for girls... trousers or a skirt (obviously not the belt sized ones  )

i don't agree with preaching in a motor bike gear like, waht you wear i feel does matter, ok so in his case u thot it cool, well i think it off the owrld, we are to be set apart and when someone looks at us thye are supposed to see Christ, we are supposed to stand out for the right reasons. we are not to draw attetnion to ourselves and i feel that wearn that stuff is bringn as much attention to yourself as wearing loadsa fancy stuff. things like what we wear often say more about us than we speak, because even sinners can preach, loadsa preachers have gave great sermons but have been living immoral livwes. i feel its other things that demonstr8 what we are about.

hmm.. you just made me think.. even sinners preach.. sinners do preach.. every sunday.. and sinners listen! we are all sinners.. even ministers, preachers, vicars, bishops... all are sinners! thank God He forgives us!

now i dont give a damn what someone wears to church personally because i would rather listen to what they say and see in their actions what they preach rather than what they wear!! i have heard many many sermons by people dressed "accordingly" and im sorry but they were the most boring, pointless and sometimes quite wrong pieces of teaching i have ever heard!

in this case yes i did think it was cool, in the same way i would think it was if he was wearing a next suit... a versace suit, jeans or surf shorts, believe me i have heard sermons preached with people in all those and all have been great.

coz lets face it.. everything we were is of the world! because it is of the world, theres no way round that. *shakes head in dispair* how can we possibly be so narrow minded...to pre judge and continue to judge someone just because of what they were!? its beyond me!

one last point.. people do not see Christ in clothes... clothes are individual to those who wear them... someone dressed as a punk talking to punks about christ will get the message across alot better than someone in a 3 piece suit!!

people see Christ in actions, in love, compassion, care, understanding, grace.. not in out ward appearance!

k so heres my personal opinions

We r comin to the house of God so we should dress respectfully if God has given us the finances etc to be able to do so. People no well off, or mayb jus havent had the time to get ready for wat eva reason well fair enuf we can all undastnd dat.
Also i think women sould wear a head covering in church (check out 1Corinthinans 11 v 1-7)

i dont agree with comein in ur everyday clothes well cus we aint comein to an everyday place to do everyday things

good on ya girl, yuo and yup to everything uv said. i agree that women should wear a heaed covering as this is in accordance with what the bible says, the head covering is not the womens hair but a piece of cloth or hat in order to show obedience to the headship of amn and ultimately God. wearing what we run about the house in to church is showing no distinction between the two.

i read 1 Corinthians 11.. the head covering mentioned was part of their culture...ie turbans etc... plus when you read further down to verse 15 it says "if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering" so does that not mean that aslong as she isnt bald then her head is already covered?

oh another wee thing i read.. the word covered used in 1 Corinthians 11:6 is katakalupto in greek, meaning cover fully, to wrap oneself up, to veil.
a veil being a face covering.. and in ancient times a veil was a sign of humility and modesty.. so surely the whole point is to go being humble and modest to glorify the head... Christ and God!

so i kinda disagree with the hat stuff! as much as it makes me feel like an outcast in some churches! plus in this question i wasnt really talking about stuff we run about the house in.. but im talking about generally should we not be glad someone is in church rather than worry about what they wear?

it was scripturally correct for women to be covered and men uncovered. this does not refer to the hair in this case, if it was then it would also mean then the men were to be completely shorn. it is saying that of a women refused to wear a veil then she may as well have a shorn head which is shameful. wearing no veil was displaying equality with the man (not as in inferior)
