there strikes me to be a lot of church goers who wear hats on this forum... sorry girls. now heres the thing, in first corinthians 11 v 1-16 what paul writes is paraphrased here. now in talking about these head coverings paul is saying that belivers in christ should look and behave in ways that are honorable in their own cultures. in many cultures at the time of writing, it was a sign of masculinity to have long hair, in corinth at this time, it was a sign of male prostitution in pagan temples. similarly was short hair on females. thus a christian female with short hair in corinth at the time would find it hard to bear witness to christ, simply because people would look at her and judge her as a prostitute. even before she had a chance to speak she would be at a disadvantage. a similar situation would arise with males with long hair.
paul also was not saying we should adopt all the practices in our culture, instead we should avoid practices and appearences that detract from our ultimate goal, witnesses to the lord jesus christ.

I totally agree there, cus our appearance shouldn't matter, and is only an opinion. I do believe that we should respect church, but i don't think that we can say that these people should not be welcome.
Yea i like what u said about tradition, it is coming through. God looks at our hearts, not our appearances.
We have to remember to focus on God!

emmm that as a wee bit.... not writen well, lol :D

If you think about how you would dress if you were sent to see the Queen You would dress formally like fellas wearing suits and a woman dress smartly but isn't God a lot higher than the Queen.......

I agree with beky when she said about coming in their ordinary clothes coz we are going to God's house to worship Him!

[QUOTE=Ruthy,Apr 16 2007, 01:08 PM] If you think about how you would dress if you were sent to see the Queen You would dress formally like fellas wearing suits and a woman dress smartly but isn't God a lot higher than the Queen.......

God doesn't look at what's on the outside though does he? The Queen can't see us on the inside can she?

I mean a church that turns away a tramp who has no money for clothes is in the wrong. However I suppose if you have the choice between nice and normal clothes maybe you should make the effort. having said that at the end of the day it realllly doesn't matter - it's more down to the church's rules as a body rather than Gods rules.

guest radius in reply, i cnt reali comment on wat uve siad becus its sumthin ive neva totally looked into. But in saying that i take the Bible as it is before me, and wen i do that i read clearly and simply that as a sign that Christ is the head of the Church, women are to cover there heads before a Holy Almighty God. I wud rather do sumthin like wearin a hat and skirt(despite the several arguements surrounding this issue) to church and know with assurity in my heart that i am in no way offending a Holy God who is to be feared rather than to hope my judgement is coorect.
I hold similar views regarding baptism, infant i can understand several of the arguements, but i personnally adhere to believers baptism becus once again i can with assurity know that i am yet again, in no way offending a mighty and just God.

I totally agree with you beky coz I luv wearing a hat and skirt to church becoz I believe that I should as a sign of respect to God when I am in church!Of course everyone has different views on this matter and any other matter bt its what I believe!!

I don't tink that babies should be baptised becoz isn't baptsim publically showing that you have been saved and Jesus has washed away your sins!? When my new church gets built I hope that they will have a baptism service so I can get baptised becoz be4 they knocked the old one dwn they had a service n I pulled out n I reali regret nt doin it!!! :(

do you not see the problem though with taking the Bible at face value? about being dogmatic about that? without looking at language, traditions of their day, what people were like, what they did, their customs.. etc... without that context things can be taken totally the wrong way! its a 2000 year old book!!

K just a thought but the women in the early church peopid when Cor. was written had their heads covered at all times so maybe Paul was trying to say that this should be no different when they went to church. However in our culture it is acceptable that we don't have to cover our heads and therefore this is the norm so using the consept (above) women don't need to cover their heads in church.

Also if we were going to stick with ancient tradition shouldn't the men be wearing long robes i.e. 'skirts' as this is what the men in the early church would have worn?
And on the theory that women should dress in the same way that women in cor. dresses i.e. skirts and hats, should the men not also follow the traditions from the early church and wear robes and turbans.

I don't see whay it should change for one sex and not the other!! B)

careful alibi, that "2000 year old book" is God's word, commands, law and Good News 2 us. those parables and all may have applied 2 people with different cultures but their point and meaning are the same and they are as relevant as ever. sure, its useful 2 find out about the way pple lived and their culture etc. but the Bible's meaning doesnt change 4 different pple. yea its wrong for the Bible 2 b taken out of context but theres nothing wrong with doing wot the Bible says!

i know its God's word and all that... but it is still an old book!! look at what is happening now, what God's hand has been in throughout the last 100 years! we could keep adding to the Bible with the amazing things He has done and the people that He has used, but we havent!!

their point and meaning, if you find it are applicable.. but some of the things in the Bible are still references to peoples cultures and traditions of that time! i agree though... there is a problem when it is taken out of context, when people are so dogmatic about what it says that they miss the whole point, surely if we all remember and read it we can see that Jesus was so angry with the pharisees etc coz they knew everything of the Bible inside out and followed it religiously and missed the point entirely!!! i sometime fear that Christians still fall into that trap!

nemo good points btw!! cant believe i missed you post there!! but yeah the whole thing about "women shouldnt wear men's clothing" , ok.. so that means skirts, baseball caps, shirts, trousers, t shirts.... do you see where im going with this one?
