Whilst obviously it's important to be meeting with other believers regularly, for me being a Christian is so much more about the personal relationship with God. I'm not saying that I never go to church, and I don't believe that you should never go, but for me I get so much more out of things like Youth Fellowship, and particularly SU. I find it hard to tune in church sometimes, perhaps cause the talks are more adult-orientated.Infact sometimes i am bored to tears lol. What is your take on the issue? |

the thought of kyle breaking down in tears in church has a certain humour value for me, i hav to sympathise thou, i know wher hes coming from and i often find myself nodding off to sleep in church. we all hav different ways of dealing with it like. on a more serious note, i don't think we should never go to church, it's often dependant upon hus taking the service whether i go or not, bt i don't rely think we need to be in it 2 or 3 times on a sunday to be a christian. |

i think it is good and proper for Christians to reguarly meet together under the ministry of the Word of God. Church can be a little monotonous i wll admit but i generally never miss unless im ill. I find takin notes on the sermon helps to keep u interestd and is very helpful for spiritual growth. I think Christians shud meet together cus helps spiritual growth and we are commanded to meet together to woship and to pray. The church systems follows that of the Jewish sysytem where they were commanded of God to meet together and thus we shd fllow and do the same. (waffly but i hope u get the point) |

i don't believe that you have to go to church to be a Christian, however i do believe that it would help!!! It is important to go to church, and u really should, if you can, however, i don't believe church is necessary to becoming a Christian. And since others are talking about it, i would also agree that i do not find church that interesting, and i nearly take more out of the childrens adreess, than the main service. But i still go every week, and try to get as much as i can out of it, which changes from week to week, depending on the service. Thnx for the idea becky =]=]=] |

yea, it is vry important 2 go 2 chrurch and it certainly helps. they are bases 4 meeting, praise and safety. thats all i have 2 say really but i just want 2 ask is it just me or is it that congregations r gettin smaller? im very concerned about the 'not necessary' approach some pple take 2 goin 2 church. i know it isn't necessary 2 have 2 go 2 church 2 become a Christian, but if evry1 didn't go 2 church regularly, churches would be far less... (hmm how can i word this?)...strong (hope this makes sense) P.S. yea, i think thats a good idea 2, have 2 try notes sometime. |

i herad this once and thot it useful and ture, things like going to church, even when we dont understnad whats being said etc is like a siev (think spelt right). when we put water into a siev, it just runs through it, BUT it cleanses it. therefore, wheither we get it or not, being at church is vital to our christian and spiritual life because God commanded it and we need fellowship. going to church doesnt make you a christian, that step is only through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, we cant get to heaven through our own works like going to church. i agree that making notes helps as what clicks with you stays. |

actually had such a debate bout this the otha day ova lunch! Basically i supose u cud say that it isnt necessar to go to church but other wise u aint goin to grow spiritually! Did not Jesus say, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name there am i in the midst" meeting in the name of Christ is essentially church! Plus often times the minister points out sumthin which wwe otherwise wud not see in the Bible I used this analegy in r little debate, i siad u dnt have to breath, u can choose nt to, but it isnt such a gd idea, basically ur gonna die physically. You dnt have to go to church but ur depriving ur spiritual side essentially of air, of food, of water, and thus if u dnt go to church, more than likely spiritually ur gonna die, in regards to goin forward for CHrist. |

ok i have slightly changed my mind on this, our good friend Neil was talking about it again, so i thank him. But to go to church is to grow in faith, to not go to church is then denying that faith, because we should want to know more about God and get closer to him, doing so by going to church. So to be a Christian it is necessary to grow in faith, and to want to grow in faith. A bit of waffleing there, but hope it helped.

i think that christians do not HAVE to go to church but if you want to worship God and learn more about him i think it is a great opportunity to do so. As a christian you should want to go to church but it does not say anywhere that it is a necessity for us to go. yes it does say in the bible "Where two or three are gathered together in my name there am i in the midst" but it also says "i will never leave you" therefore God is with you all the time not only when two or three are gathered. you will die if you choose not to breathe but you wont die spiritually as a christian if you dont go to church. there are other ways to grow as a christian through prayer and bible study. i go to church every week and i find it really helps sometimes but im just sayin that it is not absolutely necessary to go but it can help you to grow in your faith. |

im gonna hav to disagree wit u der aninka,
there are other ways to grow as a christian through prayer and bible study
This is essentially the idea behind church, to study the word of God and to learn more about Him And, in the OT the Jews attended what we might equate with our Church today. Now when Jesus came the old covenant was replaced with the new, this does not however mean the old covenant and law does not apply, it jus means Jesus fulfilled it, and became the mediator between God and man. Jesus talked about the law, but in how we were meant to understand it in the first place. The Jews thought they had to live to the law strictly but in actual fact as Jesus showed the law is impossible to keep and it therefore condemns us (im gettin abit of track here) Nyhu we are to adhere to the old law where it has not been further explained. Jesus did not further explain the idea on meeting together and so the Jewish example still applies. There is a passage in the OT, perhaps Nehemiah (i cnt xactly remeber) but it basically recounts how the people gatheres together ot hear instruction for the religious leaders (essentially church) Also is it not often true that we are in church and the minister is speaking on a familiar passage and we find that it hits us WOW! i neva noticed that before. The minister/pastor further instructs us in things we did not see before. This is because the are the instruments of the God, They are vessels, and God (at least if the minister is doin as he shud) shows them something from the Word of God, which they then impart to the congregation. Also "i will never leave the nor forsake thee." I think the context here is wen we are in trouble, or in despair, that although we feel alone God is there, it cannot necessarily be equated to this situation. And, essentially Jesus conducted 'church' all the time. When a crowd of people gathered to hear His teaching this is essentially church. The Church is all the chritsians, local chruches are jus local groups of christians. In the N.T it is difficult to read without some indication of 'church' since the idea behind church is essentially instruction from God. When someone from an atheist background is converted by reading a tract etc. they do not jus go along in life on their own, they find a local fellowship of believers (ie church) and stay there. They need instruction from God, as we are selves generally miss the point wen reading the Bible. Im not saying this happens all the time, i hav received much instruction in my own quiet time, but going to hear the word of God shud be a desire of the Christian (i no its hard sometimes bt generally) we shud want to no more of our Lord and Saviour, it is the evidence of grace in our lives. How do we do this, attending a service where the word of God is expounded more clearly to us! Phew!! thats my rant over! |
