Soo yea i was thinking about the music i listen to.... and it ranges from classical to pop to rock to jazz etc etc

but when it comes to metal/slightly satanic(if thats the right word)
you see my mum always comment on how you act on what you listen to... but i dont think this is true... i listen to a band called disturbed(nice name, i know :P) and they are quite.... bad, lyrically... but is it ok for me to listen to it?
as i've said i believe its ok, because im listening to the music because i like it, rather than for the lyrics.. well thats my response..

i'd like to see what everyone else thinks/believes - o and what music they like too =]
(and omw is newton faulkner not the best guitarist ever!!!!!!/singer :D

yes! glad 2 hear u like classical! :D

i dont want 2 b a spoilsport but i dont really think christians shud listen 2 satanic musicat all. ive never heard of disturbed but if their lyrics r satanical in any way i dont think u shud listen 2 it - sry! the reason i think this is because i feel that as Christians, we shud b making a stand 2wards the devil. im concerned about the increase in popularity in things like death metal etc. which is 1 of Satan's tools 4 turning pple away from God.

classical all the way - woooooo! wots any1's favorite composer? my favorite is J.S. Bach.

basically i wud say no becus of how it generally makes u feel, the ideas nad inspiriations behind such pieces of music...i have listened to the odd satanic band in my time n generally i dnt see what gd can come out of listening to it. Also, whilst u may not take the words in, ur r giving money to, and supporting that particular band who r setting such a bad example for sooooo many people, and then u have the people hu do listen to the words and become satanists. Ur nt listening to the lyrics...as yet....bt the devil is all the while influencing u in the wrong way with that music. It is soo much better i think to flee from such things. People r gonna dislike me for this bt i try not to listen to nythiin bt Christian music....i nt saying i achieve this r that im sooo super spiritual bt i thinks its beter for u as a CHristian.

i think we will agree to disagree... i am pretty stubborn sometimes so forgive me.. but i totally get what you mean... thats why i made this topic.. to see other opinions..

but there is such a difference in the music to me.... i just like music.. generally because i like the sound of it.. but Christian music is an experience.... and i totally prefere Christian music

i just dont see how wrong it is..... i like your points.. especially the one about the money.. i never thought about that.. =]

well atm i am listening to more acoustic stuff... but i still listen to them....

hmm.. music is so powerful... so i think (within reason) most things are open to listen to! like if you just like the music itself and not the lyrics, or you like the lyrics... or...um... i have to run to class but il write more later coz this is something that i had to work through too! :D

righteo now that my horrible class is over! woo! :D back to this topic!

um... what was i saying before.. um... anyhoo! music has a great amount of power when it concerns people, and i think this is definately an "each to their own" topic! for me i love to listen to happy music, like pink or bruce springsteen and some of the stuff thats on the radio atm! but sometimes when i feel down or like i want to chill out it'll be eva cassidy, bob dylan or amy winehouse.. but if im in a storming bad mood and i want to escape out of it before i say or do something il regret il put on some ratm, soad, megadeth, 'tallica (the legends that are! :D ) and more heavy stuff just because i can vent through that and become a happy clappy person once more!

classical i cant get apart from ludovico einaudi! absolutely beautiful, and well some Christian stuff just grates at me, just because either the words have no meaning for me, the music is crap or they sound the same!

Although I absolutely love music, I have to say that I personally try to avoid satanic/ sexually or otherwise suggestive songs because I know that they're not beneficial to me in anyway as a Christian (and heavy metal kinda creeps me out - I prefer singing to SHOUTING! lol) I often find that music by Christian artists is the most uplifting and it really makes you stop and think. You don't even realise it sometimes, but when you listen to a song by an artist and start to sing along, you forget the fact that they're talking about sex, drugs, violence etc and those kind of lyrics can affect how you think. They can be really influential - would certain things be so socially acceptable without being promoted by popular culture? I'm someone who pays a great deal of attention to both the melody and lyrics and I find it really difficult to listen to a tune with some guy talking about a girl's body disrespectfully or whatever without stopping and considering what I think about what's being said from a Christian perspective. Also, if you're happily humming away at a secular (non-Christian) tune and a non-Christian walks past and hears you, do you not think that they might wonder why this Christian guy/girl might be singing a tune which condones something that they claim to disagree with? We have to be so careful as Christians in everything that we do or say or else the world will never see the light that we should be in the darkness...

I'm so glad someone else out there my age likes Classical music! I studied it at GCSE and AS and it's amazing how much more you appreciate it when you understand how it was written and the circumstances of the composer. I was at the Proms in Carrickfergus at the start of September and the atmosphere was so lovely in comparison with other music concerts. Gotta love a bit of Mendelssohn or Mozart's melodies - so memorable! He really was a genius and anyone can listen to him without moaning about classical music! Also love the passionate drama of Rachmaninov's piano music - to quote Mrs. McCurdy in my AS music class last year, "You can almost here the Red Army marching down the streets of Moscow...well at least I do!" Good times!

lol! i can listen to it sometimes, just not all the time!

i see where you're coming from about the representing yourself as a christian but i guess we're all different though and our tastes do vary! the RnB stuff, even though it is sometimes quite vulgar in lyrics is the best stuff ever to work out to! the beat gives a great rhythm to keep going.. something i need loads and loads! lol!

Rage Rachel and Becky totally stole my points lol!! As I write this I am listening to cool FM on line but if I hear a song that has alot of swearing in it, Kanye West (stronger) or is very sexual (Shut up and drive) I turn the radio off/down. Huggy can you immagine if you are humming the tune of one of the songs by the band that you like and then someone asks you about it and goes and buys on of their CD's and they listen to the words of the song well....

(Gues what has just come on .. stronger!!!)

As for Christian music - Im not to fussed on some of it - I used to listen to UCB and the music they played was generally all noise if you get what I mean and I have to admit that I don't mind heavier music!!!

As for clasical... well yeah how is twinkle twinkle little star?? Lol - have to admit that I quite like G4 and Il Divo!! Oh and Jazz/swing Robbie Williams swing when your winning is amazing - couldn't live without it!!

I stll cant see how its wrong... ok i get it if someone take actions from lyrics and looks to those people as idols... but i am just listening to the music... and surely you cant say thats wrong...

but yeas.. i laugh at most songs... their lyrics are terrible.. all these love ones... i remember a great example of avril lavigne, she said 'yea i put alot of feeling into this song, and it means alot to me' or something along those lines... ok so the song was talking about a 'boyfriend'... and she's married.... i lol'ed soo hard

and most peoples 'creativeness' is about sex, and boyfriend/girlfriend stuff... i hate it

true lyrical genious is when someone creates a song from their heart, or creates a musical story, or shows faults in our society(i love those ones, contravertial is the word =])

.... so im agreeing with you in a way, it just the way people like to judge others by their music choice (in no way am i saying you are doing that, its just alot of people do)

ooo true story, i was looking at guitars the other day, and wanted help so i looked around, and saw this guy, long black hair, bright pink eyeshadow, alot of black and green in the clothiing department, i asked him for help... one of the friendliest guys i've seen - i love things like that =]

I'm not saying that all secular music is a bad influence (I love my musicals and pop tunes as much as the next person), but you have to admit that even the 'mildest' of music can be influential. For example, love songs can create unrealistic expectations about relationships (probably more so for girls) or about the physical side of relationships for guys - I mean, just look at some of the music videos on TV at the minute!

For those who don't listen to Christian music generally, I would strongly recommend Chris Tomlin, Tim Hughes, or Casting Crowns or Third Day if you prefer rockier tunes.

Disturbed as in these guys.
They seem... emm... heavy.. satanic? I didn't really get some of the words so I cant say definite yes, but I doubt they're christians :D

Music will play on your sub-concise. Even when you say you don't listen to the words, your sub-concise still listens to them.

Personally I listen exclusively to Christian music, with a more concentrated sway to Christian rock (not so much ultra heavy though). I don’t see what’s wrong with the likes of Sanctus real, Superhero or all star united… not super heavy but they have very true lyrics which really uplift you sometimes as Rachel mentioned. A lot of people listen to a few Christian artists that aren’t the best and then just don’t listen to any other ones. It took me a good few years to develop my taste for Christian rock (and now that I remember some of the things I used to like listening to it makes me laugh [some of them where really silly, don’t ask]), and now that I’ve found an artist that I really like (Sanctus real mainly) I am more than happy to get a few albums of theirs and then progress to find other good bands. :)

Anything satanic will be an immediate contradiction to your faith when someone asks you what sort of band they are. Sorry if that sounds harsh but even if you say you don’t listen to the words it’s like saying you don’t listen to the swearing on TV, you just watch the pictures, some part of you will take it in (your sub-concise mainly). I just don’t think it sets a very convincing witness to someone who isn’t Christian that’s all.
Here be a link to one of Sanctus Real's songs, they're not that rubbish, are they?

soo what do i listen to if im obsessed with music?(just a question)... and want to hear all types... i dont think there is much heavy Christian stuff stuff, or dance stuff... and to be honest most music is not Christian, there is actually a Christian genre, which does have its own sound, there are a few exceptions...

i do listen to alot of Christian music, (might sound stupid but it sounds alot better - just because of the lyrics)
yea lyrics make it different... but i don't see the problem with listening to non-Christain music

i might go as far as to say its like if you only had non-Christian friends, would you work on them or dump them?

:)
