I'm actually quite interested to find out how harvest came about because it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the bible as a specific tradition if you know what I mean. Or maybe it is ...so how did it come about? I'd like to know; biblical or otherwise

I think it might come from the command to give a tenth of your first fruits/crops/anything else that was farmed or grown to God???? Not sure tho. Wot u think? i love harvest in our church. It just reminds me so much to be thankful to God for the bounty he has prvoided us with, and despite all the bad weather and flooding and stuff he still provides!!!

hmm, ive never thought of its origins before - i think revive is right, some website did say that harvest was to do with the tithe. "Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. Deut. 14:22 and that it is simply a festival for thanking God and giving to the poor (which i forgot about). And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own. (Deut. 14:27) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied. (Deut. 14:28-29) but it doesnt seem to stem from a single event/command. the first suggestion of harvest is In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. |

Yeah i see what you mean, although, it's wierd how you can already see the difference between these two brothers isn't it? Abel, "brought fat portions" Genesis 4 v. 4 Cain, "brought some of the fruits of the soil" Genesis 4 v. 3 It just shows who's heart was devoted to God, and who's wasn't so much. Are you more like Cain or Abel? I think if i was to be honest, i probably am more like Cain. I give to God but do i really think about it, and praise God for the bounty he has given me, especially at this time of year? Or, do I grumble that i have to give to God at all? God is so amazing and he provides so much, as it says somewhere (don't know where!!!) he provides us richly with everything for our enjoyment. In our church on Sunday they played a clip by Rob Bell, and he brought this up. He reminded me that "food? it's a gift? clothes, a gift. That last breath you took, it's a gift." God knows what we need before we ask him for it, but he still likes us to ask. "HE richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment" |

It reminds me of the great need there still is for missionaries to help others hear about God in remote areas. It also reminds me to pray for those who have not yet had the opportunity to hear about God and get to know him would get that opportunity. Edited by Andrew Brown, Oct 3 2008, 05:22 PM.

Harvest always makes me think of the parable of the wine grower who gets some hired help and he hires them at different times of the day but gives them all the same pay. I know its completely random! I always think of how blessed we are and how much we have to be thankfull for. |

Yeah thats true we do have so much to be thankful for. I think of the blessing of food and his provision, and just ho blessed we are to have been born where we were. We could just as easily have been born into a poor family living in a desolate area in another country with no ready clean water supply, drought, famine and not knowing where our next meal comes from, or how we will afford it. It makes me feel so guilty when i complain about "not liking" the food set in fromt of me, when I have three good meals a day, and if i get hungry can just reach into a full cupdoard!!! We are richly blessed, even though we don't think of ourselves in that way. |

I think even when we do not feel we have much to be thankful for we should still praise God and that is why I love the song Blessed be your Name. It just makes me think of Job and how despite the prevailing circumstances he stuck by God and cursed himself and his own birth b he would curse God. We cant always see the big picture but whatever happens in your life God is in control and not a hair on your head can be touched without his go ahead. |
