In RE today, we were talking about euthanasia, and a woman called Mary Warnock said that people who are demented should be allowed to die if they wished as they are "wasting the resources of the National Health System".

The point that hit me wasn't so much about the topic of euthanasia, but rather the fact ythat she asaid this about "demented" people, or people with dementia, Alzheimer's and other such illnesses that affect a person's mind.

I had to try so hard not to cry during that lesson as my granda suffers from Alzheimer's. However, I wouldn't want him derad for anything. It made me wonder how this woman could say something like this. I know it is a struggle with my granda, and at times it is hard to watch him the way he is now compared to how he was when I was younger, however I don't think his condition is any reason to kill him. He hardly recognises me anymore and he has practically losat his ability to speak, but he is still my grandfather no matter what and we still have great times when we take him out placers, although he doesn't like getting ut of the car, but if she was me, how could she think that about her loved one?

Just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on this or experience with people in a similar condition to that of my grandfather? I was just thinking...

I just dont understand how people can even think about killing someone. Just taking someones life. Euthinasia and the death penalty are both things i strongly contest and cant understand how people think that someone could be rationally killed. What makes us human is our love and our love stops us from killing.

No, I don't get it either. I was a a bit cross. Well, very cross. Mrs Kirkwood said it was a tricky subject and she didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but how could you not?

A lot of people, (not everyone i stress), who want to be killed or commit suicide do not know Jesus.

With him we can live for tomorrow, because he is right there beside us, living it too.

Suicide and Euthinasia are trickey topics for RE teachers to cover and I dont envy them. I just dont understand how anyone could consider a human life no matter what the condition of the mind a "waste of resources". There are allot of stigmas attached to alzheimers and other forms of dementia that need to be dealt with and should not be arround in the 21st Centuary.

Sorry, didn't mean to post twice!!!

Yeah, i know what you mean. There are so many stories i could tell about my granda that had us in stitches, and at times he is better than others. Sometimes he can't speak at all and other times he talks away to himself and sings along to Jonny Cash/Charlie Landsboro/whatwever CD my dad has on for him.

Why do people view sufferers as being wastes on resources. The same could be said for people who suffer from alcoholism or drug abuse, yet we would never say they should be allowed to die.

Its not just that though, Moley you were saying about stigmas attched to certain situations etc. I had an operation at the start of the summer, and when we went up to the NOrth coast on holiday, I couldn't walk very far on my crutches, as i got tired so easily. We went to Asda, and i was made to go round in a wheelchair. i was so embarrassed cos i had to use it but i asked a worker where they kept something and he answered me really slowly like i couldn't understand english and then led me to it. It'sd like he thought there was something wrong with my brain!! Just because i was in a wheelchair. it isn't right.
