ARRIVAL AT THE THEATER/PRE-SHOW EVENTS

So please bare w/me, I saw this almost a year ago....June 2004....Though i remember it quite well...So i arrived at the theater (Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco) eagerly anticipating a spectacular performance, I had been a huge fan of the cast recording!! Now the Golden Gate Theater is a really beautiful theater, and I was in the front Mezzanine. I opened my Playbill and i discovered two slips for understudies...I was like "damn! Tracy and Link are going to be understudied..." although i was in good spirit, the slips read as follows:
"At this performance, the role of Tracy Turnblad will be played be KATRINA ROSE DIDERKISON" and "At this performance, the role of Link Larkin will be played by MICHAEL V. CUNIO" and then i was eagerly awaiting the performance to begin as they announced yet another understudy for one of the dynamites, i couldn't quite remember the name of the girl....

THE SHOW
ACT 1

"Hairspray" tour was beyond words, right when Katrina opened her mouth, talent spilled out!! She has a gorgeous pop voice that's just right for Tracy and she had a magnificent stage presensce as well as her acting, she had the perfect comedic timing. The cast had so much energy and was full of laughs and it went really smoothly with everything...

GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE
very clever staging, i love how tracy came out on bed standing up and in the background were women in holes dancing, very nice! Lots of energy, very fun...she was very believable as a 16 year old girl
NICEST KIDS IN TOWN
Jordan Ballard was a very good singer and good actress, though she went sort of quickly on her lines...but i liked how she played Amber as a dumb blonde B****, the audience hated yet loved her. Velma was hillarious and played over the top by Susan Cella (brilliant, encore, encore!!) Corny Collins was played by Troy Britton Johnson, he was what i expected Corny to be and very entertaining, cool! hip! not a strong singing voice, but it worked for me! Loved the dancing, you could tell it was strongly supported by the whole cast as one!
MAMA I'M A BIG GIRL NOW
i was eagerly awaiting to see Bruce Vilanch as Edna and i was very pleased with him!! He was such a good Edna, he made me laugh! it was great! He took his time with the comedy, presenting it just right....gave the girls a chance to shine: JORDAN BALLARD, KATRINA ROSE DIDERKISON, AND SANDRA DENISE (she was by far my favorite actress in this show, she played penny very innocently and yet slow...)
I CAN HEAR THE BELLS
very funny....was such a broadway musical moment! loved it!! We now hear/see MICHAEL V. CUNIO talk, he was very funny, and i could see him physically as link and was very entertaining...Sing your heart out KATRINA!!
THE LEGEND OF MISS BALTIMORE CRABS
very funny....susan cella was brilliant in this! nice voice! hillarious acting! my favorite line "Who knew baltimore women were such SKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGSS!!!!"
IT TAKES TWO
Okay...so Michael V. Cunio isn't the best singer in the world, he had trouble hitting some of the notes...i personally didn't enjoy it...but he threw in some acting that made up for it! and the way tracy gets all shaky at the end "ii---ii--t t-tt-aa--kes--- two---oo--oo" and she goes off key purposely was so funny!! I loved it!! although Michael was doing a pretty good job of that in most of the songs....
i don't mean to sound rude...i just think he could've done better...he might have been a little scared...i would have been
WELCOME TO THE 60'S
very energetic, BRUCE VILANCH was funny!! His character really shined in this scene!! HE grew into this part very well!
RUN AND TELL THAT
TERRON BROOKS was so wonderful!! he was a great Seaweed!! really nice voice! very funny acting, he was very smooth, and was a great dancer...everyone had great energy in this scene! KIANNA UNDERWOOD was Lil' Inez and she had a powerful voice and wonderful acting, and she was very small! I was thoroughly impressed with her performance! now in this scene, BRUCE was hillarious:
VELMA: oh so you're what spawned that (to tracy)
BRUCE: (scrunches up face in many positions) exuse me.....
and once LINK decided to leave w/amber, he went through the door then KERPLUMP!! he fell flat on his face, and i don't think everyone noticed this...but all you could see was his feet sticking out from the wings...he didn't get up for a while...i think the cast looked sort of worried....there was an akward silence in this scene...perhaps a dropped line?? i don't know...perhaps intentionally!
BIG, BLONDE, and BEAUTIFUL!
was indeed that! CHARLOTTE CROSSEY WAS BRILLIANT! Not as wild as i would've pictured her...but very good! very motherly! wonderful voice! seeing those women on stage made the whole show worth while!! the lyrics were slightly different from the cast recording....

ACT 2
BIG DOLLHOUSE
very funny...very energetic!! "will all the prisoners please return tap shoes...."
GOOD MORNING BALTIMORE (reprise)
loved Katrina in this song and the lighting!! she had a beautiful touch and according to penny was very lucky to "get out of the algebra final tomorrow"
TIMELESS TO ME
wonderful interaction between WILBUR (TODD SUSMAN) and Edna, Todd rushed a lot of his lines and really didn't show emotion in some of his lines at all...just a blank face...but he was great in this scene...and Bruce added in some san francisco comedy
wilbur is holding on from behind to Edna's chest
"oh wilbur, you're living every boys fantasy....you're in san francisco playing with the giants" and he said other ones...which i couldn't exactly remember...
WITHOUT LOVE
Loved it, Sandra Denise's character shone through in this scene...and was very funny...entire song and scene was fun and entertaining!
I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN
CHAROLOTTE CROSSEY WAS SUPERB! BELT IT CHILD! SHE WAS WONDERFUL! I LOVED THE STAGING AND LIGHTING AND EVERYTHING IN THIS SCENE!
HAIRSPRAY
I didn't like this song...but i thought the costumes were funny and it was cleverly staged!
COOTIES
Jordan Ballard was very B****y in this scene....perfect amber...wonderful voice...but b/c of her being mean to tracy..she got very little applause and someone shouted "boo" at the end of her song!! i laughed!
YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT
SO MUCH ENERGY...WONDERFUL WAY TO END THE SHOW!! WAS GREAT! LOVELY DANCING!! TRACY, PENNY, LINK, AND SEAWEED WERE STARS IN THIS SCENE....USING THE AISLES OF THE AUDIENCE AS ENTRANCES WAS VERY CLEVER AND VERY FUN!!
kATRINA DID HER EXTRA DANCING AFTER THE CURTAIN CALL, I WAS LIKE "HOW CAN YOU KEEP UP SO MUCH ENERGY" she was still dancing after i left the house...it was great...unfortunatley i didn't get to meet the actors...because someone gave me a ride...and they were rusing me...so that was dissapointing!

all in all wonderful show, wonderful sets, all around the best musical ever!!

I've never seen Katrina perform & have only seen Keala once, so I guess I don't have much say.

But I think Keala Settle should go to Broadway. I personally think she deserves it much more than anyone else.

I haven't seen Katrina either, but I have seen Keala 34 times. Enough to know how great she is & to have a say. Now, I know everybody will say that it's unfair to Katrina, yet I don't care. I'm going to post my opinions & be proud that I did.

I agree with Zelen. Not because we're best friends, but because I know how hard Keala deserves the honor to do Broadway. I have watched her in countless productions over the years & have seen her in Hairspray. She works her butt off to get the job done, always has & always will. She has the energy to keep audiences coming & to keep them coming back again & again. She does deserve it more than anyone else & I hope, wish & pray she gets her chance to do do it.

Note: If you don't read my other post, here's a little information for you. I have seen Hairspray on tour 50 times so far. 16 with Carly & like I said, 34 with Keala.

Yes, you're right. It's a lot of money that I'm spending, but well worth it.

BTW, you can't forget the times on Broadway. I think they average to about 30 performances.
