Battle Royale was a novel published in 1999 by Takami Koushun. In 2000, it was made into a movie by the famous Fukasaku Kinji. In November of the same year, a manga was written by Takami and drawn by Taguchi Masayuki. The manga finished its run in Japan in January 2006. The 15th (and final volume) made its way in the U.S. in April of the same year. A sequel to the movie came out in 2003. Fukasaku Kinji started on the movie, but died of bone cancer in January, so his son, Kenta, took over. The novel is extremely controversial. Why? Because it takes place in an alternate Japan, called the Republic of Greater East Asia. It is a police state. In the movie, it begins with this summary (shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia): "At the dawn of the millennium, the nation collapsed. At fifteen percent unemployment, ten million were out of work. 800,000 students boycotted the school. The adults lost confidence, and fearing the youth, eventually passed the Millennium Educational Reform Act AKA: The BR Act..." What is the BR Act? Each year, fifty random ninth grade classes are chosen (at different times) to compete in a Survivor-type of game. The differences are that there are no teams and the prize is survival. Yes, you read correctly. Our focus class Shiroiwa Junior High 3-B (the same year as our Negima girls) board a bus under the guise of going on a school trip. They are gassed and taken to an island, and when they wake up in a classroom they have collars around their necks. A teacher (the teacher is different in all versions) comes in and explains the rules: Each student will be called out one by one. As they are called out, they'll be given a bag with food, water, and a random weapon(these range from an Uzi to a boomerang. Yes, a boomerang). How to win? Kill or be killed. That's right. The students must kill each other until only one remains. If 24 hours pass without a kill, all the collars will explode. The collars will also explode if you linger in a danger zone. In order to show they mean business, two students are killed before the game begins. Fujiyoushi Fumiyo (Girl #18) is killed for whispering, and Kuninobu Yoshitoki (Boy #7) is killed for losing his temper when the teacher in the novel and manga reveals that he raped the caretaker of the orphanage he and the main character live at. The main character is Nanahara Shuuya (Boy #15). Kuninobu (nicknamed Nobu) is his best friend. His parents died in an accident when he was five, so he lived at the orphanage for ten years. One day before this happened, Nobu revealed he had a crush on a girl in their class, Nakagawa Noriko (Girl #15). Feeling guilty over not being able to protect his friend, Shuuya vows to protect Noriko (and he falls in love with her over the course of the story). After leaving the school, he finds the body of Tendou Mayumi (Girl #14), who left the school right before him. She's been killed by an arrow to the head. The culprit is Akamatsu Yoshio (Boy #1). After rendering Akamatsu unconcious, Shuuya grabs Noriko (who leaves after him) and runs. After almost being killed by two different classmates, they are rescued by the mysterious Kawada Shougo (Boy #5). Kawada is a year older than the rest of the class. The reason is because he is a winner of a previous Battle Royale. His injuries kept him in the hospital for several months and he got held back, and transferred to Shiroiwa. Meanwhile, there are classmates who have made up their minds to play the game. Souma Mitsuko (Girl #11), the school whore/pimp, uses her feminine wiles to earn trust, only to stab you in the back with her sickle. Kiriyama Kazuo (Boy #6) is playing for a different reason. He decided to play when the coin he flipped came up tails. Yes, he flipped a coin to decide whether or not to kill his classmates. Kiriyama is an odd boy. No one has ever seen him laugh, cry, smile, or express any emotion whatsoever. Has anyone seen Battle Royale? I've been obsessed with it lately. |

I read the manga and loved it. Top tier drawing skills, the style perfectly fitted the story. Also loved all the psychologic drama. And Kiriyama vs Mimura was an awesome fight. Long to death, but great. |

I've only watched both the movies. The first one was way better than the second one. The second one was more militaristic and not that great. The first one had more to do with the novel and better fight scenes. Especially the fight between Kiriyama and Kawada. I even pictured the Negima girls in Battle Royale with Nitta as the teacher. |

I saw the first Battle Royale movie in 2002 when a few members of the anime club that I was attending at the time were showing it in their hotel room at Animazement. I'm interested in picking up the DVD in hopes of not only seeing it again, but also to see if my younger brother likes it. MakiexAko4Ever, I also have pictured the Negima girls competing in Battle Royale. However, my idea (which I would love to see a cosplay skit of) involves the 21 students who are neither Negi's Ministra Magi (like I'm really gonna have Nodoka and Konoka compete in Battle Royale) nor stuck at Mahora Academy (making things easier, since Evangeline and Chachamaru won't be taking part) competing to see which student will remain in the Negima series (since the reason for the Battle Royale is to cut down the number of "students with a personality" in Negi's class). |

You don't really need to show me TnAdct1-san. I was just depressed when I said that. I like my story of it, but I never wrote it down. |

i love the movie .... but the manga is not quite that good .. it was Takeshi Kitano ('Beat' Takeshi ) that it made a diffrence.... do you remember Takeshi Kitano in takeshi's castle it was verry popular when i was a kid.... at first it was hard to belive that Takeshi Kitano would create such good movies. even the japanese people did not take him seriously at first..... if you like battle royale I deffenetly recomend 'Borther' it another masterpice of Takeshi Kitano. it in english by the way coz the movie was made mostly in the US. |
