Ah! I see I see. Well in that case your just going to have to continue reading and find out yourself. However I will tell you this I don't have a clear set mind on how I wish to end this, yet. Don't get me wrong I got a few ideas of how I want to end this. Some of which are happy while the other are rather... tragic. It really depends on how I continue to write this and the responses I get on the story.

That of course doesn't mean that you'll get your happy ending simply because many state they want one. After all I've been known to be very very cruel at times. :P

I will be sure to keep on following this story :P

Sorry for the long awaited update, but I was busy hanging out with my girl for the past week. So I'm not that sorry. :P

Way of a Demon's Heart
Chapter 3

It had been an odd two weeks for Setsuna. Class had gone on normally in it’s usual chaotic state for her during this two weeks say for the exception of plowing a woman down, and having the same said women sit in the back of class taking notes on her teacher’s work ethic. No what she found odd and suspicious was that she was sharing a room with the exact same woman, but Setsuna never saw her around. She wasn’t around before school, and after school she would disappear; except in the middle of night when she was awake. Setsuna would find the woman passed out sprawled half hazardly over the couch, only to notice as well the she was still dressed in the day’s clothes.

The woman’s name was Kakirah. She appeared suddenly at school and was only seen by the other student’s during class and lunch when the woman tried to socialize with the students. When they asked Setsuna about any information she honestly said she couldn’t do so because she didn’t know anything more then them.

This had caused rumors to grow, but by the looks of it Kakirah knew and couldn’t have cared less about it. Setsuna however was very interested in the rumors wondering if any held perhaps a figment of truth, but the one that worried her most was the idea the woman was an assassin. Had it been any other school Setsuna would pay no attention to such a ridicules accusation, but this wasn’t any other school. This was Mahora Academy, and such rumors at times proved to be true.

Put in the strange behavior of disappering, and the fact that Setsuna since from the first time meeting Kakirah had felt an uncertain aura. This could only mean one thing: if the rumor was true, her Kono-chan could be in trouble.

It was for this reason that during the past week Setsuna had insisted on staying by Konoka’s side as often as possible. Though Konoka seemed to enjoy immensely, it was during this time that Setsuna had noticed something amiss with her Kono-chan. Though she seemed happy with Setsuna’s presence, at the same time something seemed to be bothering her. After asking about it she received the reply that it was "nothing" and thought best to leave the issue be for now. Believing that if it truly was something to worry about Konoka would come to her or at least Asuna about the situation.

It was perhaps for the best though, because with her uncertainty with the new woman in class, Setsuna thought she should focus more on discovering who Kakirah really was. However this proved to be difficult. In between always staying beside Konoka, school and patrol duties Setsuna was unable to seek Kakirah out during the day, and come night time found herself to be too tired to do so then. In the morning Setsuna always woke up at 6am to do a quick training routine and prepare for school. Even at that time Kakirah would already be gone. Setsuna did think of skipping her training routine to search for the women, but knew even doing that she would not have enough time to search and be in time to escort Kono-chan to school.

It was only by chance one morning did she finally manage to get her chance.

Setsuna was having a hard time sleeping this Sunday night. Especially after having a difficult time with her patrolling the school grounds and defeating any monsters that decided they had a successful chance of attacking the school. Yes this was the norm for the school and girl. The school would have some cocky demon try and attack. And Setsuna or one of her comrades would defeat the beast. Usually the demons were weak but during the past month they had been growing stronger. This troubled her and she feared that perhaps there was going to be a mass attack in the future.

It was this, and the thoughts of Kakirah doing something that kept her troubled. True the woman had not done anything yet, and at the beginning of her stay here Setsuna had not thought much about possible assassination. However with building rumors and building suspicion she was no longer sure. And it was these two reasons that kept Setsuna awake and restless during the night.

It wasn’t until Setsuna heard a rustling from the couch (where once again Kakirah passed out despite the other… empty mattress of the bunk bed), did Setsuna look at the time and notice it was now 4 o’clock on a Monday morning. She couldn’t help but have her jaw drop with surprise. Not only at the fact how little sleep she gotten but only now realizing how little sleep Kakirah must get. The woman often only come back “home” around 12 or 1 at night and then wakes up at this time. What amazed Setsuna more was the fact that Kakirah seemed to function well during school time with out the signs of fatigue. There was no way this woman was human, and it was for this reason Setsuna grew even more determined to unravel the mystery.

Carefully Setsuna crept to the edge of her bed so she could gain a better view of the woman. Though her eyes had long ago adjusted to the dark, it still handicapped her from having her normal perfect vision. Thus she needed to obtain what ever visual help she could gain. However it didn’t seem to matter, because as of far, the woman seemed pretty normal.

Kakirah had let out a groan as she lifted herself off from her awkward position on the couch. Half haphazardly moving towards the drawer which she got on her first day here, she brought out a fresh set of clothes and then grudgingly moved towards the bathroom. When she flipped on the light she hissed having slightly blinded herself, and Setsuna too squeezed her eyes shut from the unwanted visual attack of blinding light.

Somewhat feeling relieved when the door was shut and Setsuna heard rushing water being turned on. This was her lucky day and this was her opportunity to get her self dressed as well. Rushing out of bed… or at least stumbling out, Setsuna managed to find her school uniform, throw it on and just jumped back under the covers as Kakirah stepped out of the bathroom. Her hair still a little damp but she appeared more awake.

With a quick stop at the cupboards to grab a bagel, Kakirah had left the room. Now was the difficult part: Setsuna was going to follow the woman and hopefully figure out if she was truly a threat. With Yunnagi at her side Setsuna soon too set off in her pursuit.

---

Setsuna took a quick gander at her watch to notice it now read 5:32 am, and with this Setsuna narrowed her eyes. She had been following the woman in front of her for the past 45minutes, only to be led deeper and deeper into the overgrowth of the forest. Setsuna’s uniform and parts of her had now been slightly tattered and scratched up. Though this simply because she had to keep herself hidden from the woman’s sight, which meant silently battling thorns and twigs, thus not taking the easy path.

Soon though the woman in front finally came to a stop, and thus Setsuna did as well. The female swordsman eyes once again narrowed as she watched intently at the movements of the other; waiting to see what she would reveal, and reveal she did. However it was not exactly what Setsuna expected though she really didn’t know what to expect.

When Kakirah stopped her hand went for her belt and… undid them. Though one hand did keep the baggy black cargos from falling to her ankles. The other, after undoing the belt moved to the back of her pants and reached in.

To say Setsuna had grown uncomfortable watching this would be saying too little. But awkwardness grew to surprise as Setsuna watch the woman in front drag out a black fuzzy, red striped, tail.

Kakirah did up her pants again and looked back at the new protruding appendage a small relieved smile on her face. However she was not done yet and soon her hands were now combing her deep navy hair, which allowed two fluffy ears to pop up from underneath the onslaught of hair.

This was all the proof Setsuna needed to believe that her Konoka was indeed in trouble. So with out hesitation Setsuna jumped out from her hiding place sword drawn and ready to kill.

Setsuna expected to see shock from the other woman’s eyes as she charged. However she found herself to be surprised by the woman again as Kakirah managed to easily dodge the first swing of Yunnagi by simply ducking. However Setsuna would not give up so quickly.

Setsuna thrusted Yunnagi downwards upon the woman below but only to miss once again. Kakirah had out stretched one leg which allowed her body to move with and out of the way of the incoming blade. Then in one swift movement she pivoted on the same foot she had moved to. Twirling 360 degrees with now the other foot outstretched and crashing it against Setsuna'a chest, which caused the girl to start falling backwards but Setsuna was after all a warrior so soon her reflexes took over. Which meant instead of landing flat on her back, she was on her feet after having planted her hand on the ground and thrusting herself into a back flip. This had put some distance between the two and a chance for Kakirah to ask something really important.

“Why are you attacking me?” Kakirah whined in her slightly distressed state.

“Because you’re a demon!”

“…and you’re a half demon, but you don’t see me attacking you!” Stated Kakirah rather bluntly, as if it had been the most logical thing in the world.

As for Setsuna she was stunned by the accurate proclamation and a little surprised by how Kakirah knew of her secret. With narrowed eyes she began to lower her sword still questioning the true intent behind the women in front.

“How did you know that… about me!?” Setsuna hissed.

Kakirah tapped the side of her nose. “The nose knows. That and when you knocked into me the first day I noticed that you wear hair dye and contacts. Considering you don’t seem to be the kind to hold teenage rebellion against society, it indicated that you were hiding something. Also for some one who has been around as much as I, it’s not hard to pick out a demon presence.”

Setsuna couldn’t help but lower her head slightly and wince. True she had felt something odd about the other women, but she too should have been able to figure out that Kakirah was actually a demon on the first day. She was a trained warrior! This was something that should have come easy to her, despite the fact if the woman was concealing it or not. However this was not the time for beating herself up over her own failure as a bodyguard.

“Okay, if your intuition, and nose are so great, then why didn’t you stop me from following you?”

“You were… down wind…I’m an animal… er kind of” Kakirah chuckled slightly due to her embarrassing confession. After all it was true and she had her weak points like every other living being.

“Okay… good point.” Even Setsuna knew the common fact that if you stayed down wind no animal be able to pick up your scent. “But answer me this: What is your true purpose here then? Are you after Ojou-sama?”

“Ojou-sama?” It took a while for Kakirah to realize of whom exactly Setsuna was speaking of. However after remembering hearing the girl use it to addressee the principle’s granddaughter, Kakirah couldn’t help but slam her fist into the palm of her hand in gleeful realization. “Oh! You mean your friend Konoka! Wait… why would I be after her?”

If it wasn’t for the fact it was essential to keep her position, Setsuna would of most likely fallen face first into the ground. Was this woman just acting dense? If so she was a really good actress. “Because Ojou-sama’s power… as a mage… could rival that of the Thousand-master and thus… be good for whatever… evil scheme you have planned?”

Kakirah just looked on with a blank expression on her face that lasted for seconds on end, before she brought a hand up to caress her chin. “Ah, I see I see. I knew the girl was a mage and very strong. However I wasn’t aware she was that strong.”

“Yes, yes evil plan she be good for.” Her other arm moved from its limp state at her side to wrap around her stomach, as she began to nod along with her statement. With yet another pause in the conversation though, both arms moved into a bit of a shrug. “Too bad that involves too much work. So I can’t say that I would be really interested in doing something like that.”

Now Setsuna was baffled in what she should be doing. Having come to the conclusion this demon she faced was obviously a lunatic. If Kakirah was not here for Ojou-sama, then what was her true purpose? This had to be settled once and for all!

“Then if you’re not here for Ojou-sama, what are you really here for?”

“As I stated the first day, I’m here to evaluate the kid on his teaching abilities. I swear!” Kakirah sighed in defeat as she noted that Setsuna was not going to accept her answer. She wasn’t lying, but she wasn’t telling the full truth either.

“However it wasn’t the school board that sent me. Well not the school board in Japan at least. Actually it was Negi’s magic school back in Whales that did."

“…aaannd I’m sure you’ve noticed the demons attacking your school in the past month have been growing stronger and stronger. So your principle guy asked me to help out… thin them out.”

Setsuna was still skeptical with the women in front of her. Okay, she understood why she would hide her identity, and she seemed to be truthful about the evaluating Negi-sensei part. However as she looked on at the woman's appearance in front of her, she couldn’t help but question her principles decision.

True when Setsuna first attacked she didn’t manage to actually make contact with Kakirah, and true she seemed to be able to pick up on things quickly. Add in fact the women was a demon. It was hard to believe she was there to help exterminate the demons. Quite frankly the women looked a little pathetic at the moment.

As if Kakirah had read Setsuna mind, with a simple sigh Kakirah bent her knees every so slightly. Spreading her feet to align with her shoulders, one hand coming up just slightly below her chin and in front, while the other was brought to her side. Her facial expression changing from that of baffled distress to that of pure concentration and seriousness.

When Kakirah moved, Setsuna did as welll returning her sword up at its full position ready to defend if need be. If Setsuna wasn’t going to believe her then Kakirah was left with no other choice.

"Attack me and I’ll prove what I say is true.”

Way of a Deomon's Heart
Chapter 4

"Attack me and I’ll prove what I say is true.”

“W-w-what?” Setsuna sputtered out. The more and more she stood in front of the woman the more she became sure Kakirah was a few marbles short of a full bag.

When Setsuna did not move from her position Kakirah did. She sprinted forward, her fist raised and ready to strike. While Setsuna’s eyes widened, she took a step back tilting her sword ever so slightly posed ready for the right counter strike. But as Kakirah reached the front of Setsuna instead of striking the woman dropped and slid. The hand which held a fist dug into the ground to help guide her behind the younger girl.

Setsuna swung instantly around. Driving Yunnagi down upon Kakirah, only to have her sword be caught in the other woman’s hand. The blade digging deeply into the palm of Kakirah and it showed upon the woman’s face. However amid the pain which the wound cause the navy haired demon held a smile on her lips. Pushing her self away from the swordsman, Kakirah bounded backwards many feet. The grin she held only growing more and more.

As the hand slipped away from the sword it left a trail of blood behind. However what occurred was not normal. Instead of gravity taking its effect that would cause the red crimson to drip down to the ground. It did not fall; in fact the blood began to act more like a rope that was attached to blade and palm.

Finger’s laced around the crimson rope and pulled. Causing yuunagi to fly out of the hands of Setsuna’s and into the hands of Kakirah. A smile never left Kakirah’s face as she griped tightly upon the sword she now held. However a smile had grown upon Setsuna’s. As Negi learnt in Kyoto, just because the girl was with out the sword. Did not mean she was any less dangerous.

Setsuna’s heart was now pumping with the trill of battle and it was now she who charged. Kakirah was taken back and attempted to act. Only to be proven to have acted to late as she felt a nee make contact with her stomach, and flew back a little. As Kakirah slid across the ground she tumbled and rolled. Finally coming to a stop on her stomach but it was not over yet. As she felt weight on her back and found that she now longer had the sword. This must have dropped during her little… trip.

Setsuna had pinned the older woman on the ground. Now sitting firmly on the woman’s back and holding a tight grasps on Kakirah’s wrists. This wasn’t going as well as Kakirah had hoped but just as Setsuna the woman was stubborn. Since the younger warrior knew so much, Kakirah might as well revel yet another little secret.

In one quick flash a pair of dark red, nearly black, wings spread from her back. This not only pushed Setsuna off but threw her a ways away from Kakirah. Kakirah pushed her body away from earth and turned on all fours to meet Setsuna. Ready to continue what they started but her train of thought stopped instantly due to something she was not prepared to see. Instantly Kakirah moved and pounced upon the younger warrior.

Setsuna was unprepared for the wings and was unprepared for the weight of a body pinning her to the ground. Her own body pinning one of her arms but this did not bother her as much as she looked at the expression of pain that was worn on the face of the woman above.

Slowly Kakirah opened one eye and look down on the girl. The smile she wore earlier disappeared and turned into one of grief and apology.

“It seems that we have company.”

And as Kakirah moved she shared the sight of three arrows extruding out from her back.

---

Negi had waited a few minutes for Kakirah to show but as time went on, and the woman did not make her appearance. He had no choice but attempt to begin class. Some of the students had asked about the situation but when the class received no answer from the teacher. They thought to ask Setsuna, only to notice that she to have not arrived.

This worried Konoka, and as she listened to the rumors begin to spring around her, she felt her stomach twist and turn. Some of the rumors had Kakirah injuring Setsuna and fleeing. While others had the two running off together somewhere. Neither of the rumors pleased Konoka and she began to feel the need to search for her samurai. But she trusted her Secchan and believed her to be stronger then any being. She would be fine...right?

An hour had passed and the class had settled into listening to the day’s lesson, when they were interrupted by Takamichi and the student counselor Shizuna entering the class. The class became confused but extremely suspicious when Shizuna took control of the class claiming that they would have a study period for the rest of the day while Takamichi took some of their fellow students and teacher out of the class claiming that the principle had something urgent to speak about with these selected few.

Konoka instantly knew that something was up ss she had taken note of who left the class. Them being the residential ninja, Nagase Kaede, Chinese martial artist, Kuu Fei, and the expert sharp shooter Tatsumiya Mana; all of whom were part of the schools patrol group. Though true two of the member had only recently joined, their power was not to be underestimated. Aside from them Negi had also been taken as well as Asuna. Finally the vampire of the school Evangeline A.K. McDowell and her companion Karakuri Chachamaru. All these people had helped in missions which concerned demons and magic in the past. There was no doubt in Konoka’s mind that they were being called out for a mission regarding the same issues.

It was this reason Konoka was rather annoyed at not being taken as well. Though she understood that it was only her grandfather being over protective of her, and had it been a different day perhaps Konoka would have stayed behind. But today was just not one of those days.

Konoka was sure Setsuna was involved in this as well and if a large group of the strongest where being taken to help, then it was obviously something Setsuna couldn’t handle on her on. Which meant she is in trouble or worse...could she have been badly injured? That left Konoka with the only option: to seek and help the warrior.

---

Kakirah stood from where she was. A hand reached back and removed the offensive objects from her back. She was cocky and had lost track of her surroundings. Now it would seem she would have to pay for her mistake, as she felt, smelt, and heard more and more demons approach from a distance. Her eyes glanced down to see if Setsuna was still on the ground only to find that the woman had taken her advice and went for her sword.

“Setsuna, I’m going to trust the demons on the ground to you… good luck.”

Setsuna peered from her position after having picked up Yunnagi, to watch Kakirah take to they sky as she felt this growing need to yell out coward to the woman she watched what she had thought to be running away. But then many other figures followed her from the thicket of the forest and Setsuna's eyes widened in recognition at what Kakirah was truly saying.

Her train of thought was cut short as reflexes took control of her body for a brief second, and she sliced an arrow flying at her with Yunnagi. This was just not turning out to be her day.

---

“I’m sorry to take you out of your class, but it seems that Mahora Academy is under attack.” Takamichi had lead the group of students to the front of the school and simply got straight to the point.

Everyone nodded in understanding with the exception of Evangeline who seemed rather annoyed with the whole situation. However the little vampire continues to listen in silence.

“It’s a rather large group which will be needed to be taken care of quickly. I believe it best that Mana, Kaede, and Kuu Fei head west, while Negi and Asuna head south, and the three of us head north. Please be quick and at the same time careful. It’s best not to underestimate these beasts.”

“Wait Takamichi-sensei. What about the East part of the campus? Shouldn’t someone be there?” It was Asuna who spoke what most of the group had been wondering.

“Ah, it would seem that the situation is being taken care of by Setsuna and Kakirah. Now we must move.”

The group broke and headed as quickly as possible to their designated directions.

This was all Konoka needed to hear. She had escaped from study period making the old “bathroom” claim and now hid a little ways listening into the conversation. As she left, the eyes of the few in the group followed, hoping that letting her go was the best thing to do.

---

Konoka had rushed as fast as her feet could carry her towards the east side of the campus, hoping that she would find her friend safe and with out harm. As she moved further and further into the forest she began to hear the sounds of battle, encouraging her to keep moving and informing her that she was heading the right way.

As she neared closer to the sounds she screamed as a demon came crashing to the ground beside her. Her eyes trailed to the sky from where the beast had fallen to notice that there wasn’t only a battle happening upon the ground but as well as the sky.

The scream had alerted Setsuna towards Konoka who tumbled out from behind the tree. A part of her was relieved to see the girl alright, but a larger part of her was in a panic understanding that the girl had fallen into the depths of danger.

This panic was for good reason to, for Setsuna wasn’t the only one who was alerted of Konoka's appearance. From the corner of Setsuna's eye she made out a figure charging at Konoka ready to attack with a blade of it’s own. But with a swift movement Setsuna stripped the demon she had currently been facing of it’s life and barreled towards the other, stopping it in it’s track with Yunnagi.

“Ojou-sama! You must get out of here! RUN!” yelled Setsuna as her limbs quivered from holding away the much larger and stronger beast in front of her.

Konoka did run but not away as her warrior had pleaded. No she was not going to leave Setsuna in this dire situation. However as Konoka sprinted another demon had appeared and grabbed hold of one of the girl’s arms and took flight. Konoka had protested and tried to pull herself free but as she felt two large gargoyle wings beat and bring her into the sky, Konoka had no choice but to stop struggling for fear of being dropped. Her only hope now was to once again be saved by her angel.

From below Setsuna screamed as she watched helplessly as her princess was taken away. Her eyes narrowed dangerously as her attention returned upon the demon she still held blade to blade. Her feet dug deeply into the earth and with tremendous force managed to push the demon away before swinging Yuunagi and the demon’s mid section was destroyed instantly.

And just as quickly two white wings spread from Setsuna’s back as she made chase after the one who held Konoka captive, a murderous look flashing within those demonic eyes of hers.

However Setsuna was unable to reach her target, as she collided with yet another demon. The samurai swerved in the sky to avoid a full on collision Yuunagi ready to pierce, but she screamed out in pain as she felt a blow upon her shoulder from behind.

“SECCHAN!”

As Setsuna faltered slightly and lost some air due to the hit, she too heard a scream from the demon that had attacked her from behind. As a bright light white pierced through the beast’s chest cavity, it would seem that Konoka had managed to release a spell from her captive state and destroyed the demon that had attacked her warrior.

However this deed did not go unpunished, as the demon who held Konoka punched the girl in the stomach. This of course did not go so well for Setsuna who had simply grown angrier with the display.

How DARE someone HARM her Konoka!

Setsuna made chase once again, but so did the demon that she collided with earlier whom appeared to be faster then that of the young half breed and was easily catching up. However with a twist of fate a third monster fell from the sky upon it and the two went tumbling towards the ground.

Setsuna swung Yunnagi and made contact with both the demons wings and it’s back tearing it nearly in half. As the strike made its contact the demon was done for, but with in the chaos Konoka was also dropped. And now she was plummeting to the ground below at terrifying speeds.

“Kono-chan!”

Setsuna dove down, now having totally forgotten the monsters around her, her complete focus on the chestnut-haired girl. As Setsuna moved closer and closer she reached out and grasped the hand of Konoka, at which time Setsuna pulled the other girl close to her body. She held on tightly and smiled; relieved that they avoided disaster.

With white wings beating fast Setsuna pushed away against the pull of gravity, and there princess and warrior flew. However this was not bliss as the wish to be was, as the demons continued their attack.

Setsuna felt like she was in a twisted dance of blades, arrows and claws as she dove, swooped, barreled and flew higher all in desperate attempts to avoid the onslaught of attacks, not once daring to loosen her grip upon the other girl. Sadly though, with fatigue catching up to her for a dull lack of sleep and battle tacking its toll, her movements grew slower with each passing second and any attempt to flee foiled. So it was no surprise that she eventually felt the stinging throb of an attack as it made contact with her back, causing her vision to blur and her control to be lost in one of her wings. She began to fall.

Konoka had only gotten in the way. Had she stayed back at the school, she would have not been in this situation now. Konoka wished to say sorry to Setsuna as they plummeted to the earth below, but she was unable to utter the words for she had long ago passed out in the arms of her dearest friend, the essence of tears having stained her young face.

As they fell further and further away from the big blue sky Setsuna held onto Konoka tighter as her eyes drifted to a close. And through the haze Setsuna could see a beast dive for them with an arm stretched out, ready to claim their bodies for itself.
