Anime; Are you proud of it?

There have been discussions and debates between anime blogs some months ago about whether or not individuals are proud of the fanbase, proud of their hobby of anime, or proud of being a fan.

So I ask everyone here this: Are you proud of being an anime fan? Are you proud of your fellow anime fans? Are you proud of having 'anime' listed as one of your interests?

Consider this on a worldly view, meaning all fans from around the world, all aspects of the anime genre.

I'll post my response once some feedback appears.

I'm proud to be an anime/manga fan, just as avid readers are proud of their reading. Frankly, anime/manga teaches lessons, and is just amazing - so hard to put it into words.

So yeah, I'm proud.

I'm sorta proud, but the thing I'm not proud of is that I like some of the shojo/romance-ish anime (can't let it out to my friends, since I have an image/reputation to uphold. a guy of my stature doesn't seem like he's into that kind of stuff)

but I'm okay with everyone of my fellow anime viewers

so are we going to try and probe the mentality of the average anime fan? @_@

BTW, I've got a li'l clique that I talk to about it. That's about it(I lack human interaction... by an unusual degree... o_o||| )

Haven't been able to respond as soon as I should have, being busy and all.

Anyway, there are two things to consider with this topic. Even though there are many good qualities about anime (beautiful animation/art, stellar voice acting, wonderful musical scores) there are many factors to its acceptance in society.
First, it's the genre. When a regular, mundane person that knows little/does not know about anime hears about it, the first impression they will get from it is that it's either
1) Just a cartoon (i.e. just for kids) or
2) porn/cheap erotica
Of course, we can argue about this forever. There are tons of series that aren't particularly for kids, nor perverted in any way. However, because of number of series that DO match with that kind of impression are much more numerous, it is hard to prove w/o having to "convert" someone into liking it. One may argue that anime is "more deep" than cartoons in [insert country]. The fact is, these kinds of anime only come once in a while. Most of the time we have this brainless garb that pretty much involves taking plot of an older series + crack. Getting something new is rare, just like shows in [insert country].

Second is the fanbase. This isn't limited to out casted Japanese otaku guys, this is every where in the world. When someone thinks of an anime fan, they will most likely think "12-year old Naruto-watching kid acting as if the characters were real", or "35-year-old NEET fat cosplay wapanese guy/girl". Again, there are many wonderful points about the anime fanbase, with many amazing artists and costume designers, but with fandom comes with the fanboy/fangirl stigma. The most prominent of fans are often awkward, greasy teenagers, running around "glomping" random individuals, claiming fictional anime characters as their lovers/dueling couplings, adding japanese nonsense to their sentences as if to make them feel special, the list goes on. And the fact that people (not just teens, older people as well) do this seriously just floors me.

It's sad because a lot of fans don't know the dark side of the anime industry; how underpaid & underappreciated many animators and seiyuu are, how much of the glitz and glamour of the business is just a facade. The only people making any real money are the head honchos of companies, CEOs, and similar. Most animators work inhumane hours, often sleeping over at their workplace to get work done, putting their blood, sweat, and tears into the project. Seiyuu often will mention in blogs that they go home by train/bus (yes, even big idols like Hirano Aya).

I do enjoy anime, but I can't say that I'm very proud of it unfortunately.

Personally, I'm proud of being the otaku that I am. Hell, I flaunt it when given the opportunity. *carried large Haruhi keychains around in hand hand all the fucking time this week* I read manga openly, plaster my binder with anime and Jrock stuff...everything. xD

I'm equally proud that I'm closer in nature to a JAPANESE anime fan than a stereotypical American Adult Swim fag anime fan. No, this does not mean I wish I was Japanese/asian. They have better hair than me, but I'm fine with being white. What I mean is that I like doujinshi, figures, Haruhi, Lucky Star, cosplay, character CDs, all that.

I display this aloooooooooooot in Anime Club, which is mostly full of Inuyashafags and weird girls that know Fruits Basket too well. You know the type. The kids that only know 3 Japanese words ("neko," "kawaii," and "yaoi"), all of which they pronounce wrong. The type that puts together a cosplay of Marik from Yu-Gi-Oh with a gold chain PAINTED ON the vest. So, thanks to me, Akashi, and a few others, we really only try and show anime that no one in Anime Club has even heard of, just to pretty much say "I'm a hueger nerd than you, gtfo." to all the newfags.

I don't try to hide my nerdness. I express it and even show it off.

I need a shirt that expresses my fandom. <<

Side note: Later on I may post my rant on stereotypical American Anime fans...since, sadly, it's not actually much of a stereotype and more a description. I'll say this now: my anime club needs to lose some fucking weight and take a God damn shower.

Awesome a debate/philosophy thread, I love this stuff (I'd take it for university but I don't know what you can do with it lol).

Anyway as for anime appreciating I'd like to say I'm proud of it. I'm also proud to say Negima's my favorite anime though most people on the outside are pretty skeptical I think. I mean all my friends except a couple think animes really childish and compare it to north american cartoon atrocities. Then within the anime world I find a bunch of ppl think that shows like Negima has no substance or the drawings not really great. But I mean I really like the good innocent fun of Negima plus it had a real tear jerking ending. AS for drawing okay so it's not all realisitc but I like this type the best everything looks so cool in this form of artistic interpretation.

In real life tho it seems so degrading when I say I like it as if I'm pressured to like all the tough guy interests or alternative arts

hmmm not sure my point came across but I'll leave it that way since I don't wanna retype

I am not overtly proud to be an anime fan, but I am not ashamed to be one either. Thats pretty much how I feel about the whole thing.

But then there are those fat stinky kids who think they're on the cutting edge of counter culture because they watch Naruto and One Piece on cartoon network. I am ashame of those types.

Hmmmmm.... I am proud of being an anime fan but to say the truth, I don't really think I can call myself an otaku.
Im not as lame as the adult swim kids Vic was talking about are, but im not really that much of an otaku either... (My jap knowledge is very tiny, I bearly see anime lately and I read less manga.... Oh did I mention I only cosplayed twice and only actually helped making the cosplay once?)

Though I am around lots of real otakus~~!! ( lucky me~!!)

^_^ Though my opinion on this nerdy & unnerdy and how other pepole see us otakus is like this:
There is no such thing as being "cool" and a "nerd".
There are just diffrenet groups of pepole that specialize and like other things.
Though as for stigma's for other groups, most of the times pepole just don't care about the other groups... Though if one would see an other showing he's group's nature, he would see it werid as it is something he is unknown of and unfond of. You can say every group has it's own stigma and jokes on, wether it's the group of the "cool" kids or us "nerds".
The only thing I think you can consider a "nerd" are individuals that have nothing special all or those that only act like the wanna-be of the real thing (pretty much like the guys Vic was talking about).

:? Though I really wonder, do any of you guys get attacked or are unliked because youre an otaku???

(P.S. =.= I kinda didn't sleep for a whole day so if I just wrote something totally stupid please forgive me.....)
