I have yet another topic to discuss. Conformity, is it possible to live in today's world without it? Many times people speak of uniqueness and identity, that everyone is different and special. And yet despite this people still wear masks in society, and kill off aspects of their personality to fit in. People who try to be different are often times ostracized and treated as outcasts. I have always tried to pride myself as a nonconformist, always trying to be myself in any situation, despite the consequences. And yet time and time again, I always find myself conforming a little here and there, and this saddens me. So what are your thoughts? |

Let me say: being weird causes you pain. And nothing but. Conformity is for keeping yourself safe. Nonconformity is for 'moving ahead' (I don't believe there's such a thing) My opinion: Those who want to or try to be weird are very bored people |

Ah, here it is, the topic of weirdness..... To take your opinion into consideration I must ask, what is "weird"? What is "normal"? In my mind normal is just what the majority of the people in society are. Weird are people who do not fall into this majority. Therefore the definition can change at any moment. In my mind, everyone is weird. No one person is the same, they are just similar. Also, I apologize for being a "board" person, but I must know. How is trying to be yourself, being bored? I don't agree with your generalization. |

There is no such thing as normal, since everything is just opinions. |

Actually, that's far from being normal. Most people say they only act like themself, but sometimes its the exact opposite. Basically, being yourself is weird. |

Livable but difficult. It's hard to live in a world where you aren't respected or accepted by anyone - the human condition needs interaction and saying you don't is ridiculous. I too think that "normal" is following the general consensus among the society you live in; although this is very generalised. I mean, I'm a bit of an anime guy, which most people laugh at and call childish cartoons. But I'm not extradited or left out because my personality fits in with what they consider "normal". So I'd say there are many different ways to fit in; and as long as you "conform" with some people, you'd feel good about yourself. Look at Mahora Academy. It's a nice large place which who like anime meet. If some unfunny jock joined and started talking about Football, he'd get attacked. I doubt he'd conform, so he'd leave and joined another group which accept him. There are societies within societies, remember that. There is always somewhere in which you'd fit. |

I have a lot of thoughts on this topic, most of which I've yet to fully realize. So I may add more later. Conformity is a odd thing. You either do it, or you tell yourself you're not doing it. What I mean by that is that if you're a conformist, you obviously conform and if you're a non-conformist you just conform to what you think is cool and normal. The only thing you can do about it is not care that you're conforming. It doesn't matter which one you do, though. I think when it comes down to it, its your personality that matters. I'll use myself as an example. I am what you'd call a classic nerd, or a geek depending on which term you prefer. I like anime, Dungeons and Dragons, reading books about wizards and dragons, playing video games en mass, etc etc. Its the culture I conformed to. So in high school, how do you think people treated me? Well I'll tell you right now, I was not pushed into any lockers or was I ever given a wedgie. I had the respect of my classmates because I was funny, witty, and an all around cool guy despite the fact that I was nothing like most of my classmates. But, being a successful "non-conformist" isn't all about just being a cool dude like myself. To say that it was would be to say that all those goth and emo kids who don't get along with the jock football types are boring people, which they may or may not be. The second piece that is crucial to fitting in as a "non-conformist" is to accept that even the people who you consider to be conformist can be cool people. I've met just as many cool people who like to drink in excess and play football (not in that order) as I have in the hardcore punk D.I.Y. community. All because I was willing to talk to them. It just comes down to not ruling out potential friends because they're not like you. My post has turned into more of a how-to-stay-cool-and-be-yourself guide, but what ever I don't care its still relevant. |

Seems to me that you have to conform to somebody else's way of doing things. Being yourself puts you in that group with all the other people who do that etc. So, even if you don't conform to mainstream ideals, you then conform to ideas that are less common. Unless you can come up with something totally unique you can't really be non-conforming to anyone else. |

The answer is yes. I will use my friends as an example. They never listen to anyone, except people they respect, and they believe they are right all the time. They also feel that obeying society is fucked up and have been living to spite society. They live the way they want to live, with no concern for the consequences. But they still live. It is possible to live without conforming. ~to die is to live on forever |
