The importance of punctuation

After today's example of "Woman without her man is nothing", I thought we'd discuss some real incidents where punctuation made/makes/would make a big difference. Here's one that cost the US Government $2 million.

A clerk one mistook a hyphen for a comma and wrote "All foreign fruit, plants are free from duty."
This meant that not only fruit-bearing plants (as was originally intended), but also all other plants as well as all fruit was duty-free.
The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.

There is a funny book written on the importance of punctuation. It's called 'Eats, shoots and leaves'. (the title describes the confusion caused by mis-punctuating (if that's a word) the dietary habits of a Panda...)
