December 2008: Week 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<< Previously on Beyond the Horizon, people searched for their hearts’ desires, while trying to reconcile their past with their present in November...
Opening Sequence <<< December: Week 3: Keep Your Enemies Closer “Well I want to get the hell outta here, number one. And number two, I want an abortion,” Ava tells Dr. West frankly. Dr. West challenges Ava over whether that’s what she really wants. Dominic is thrilled when Christian turns up at Large Bar to work! Dom is glad they will be working side-by-side and starts giving Christian the dirty details on the other staff, like Rolo, and the clientele. “I could probably tell YOU a few stories,” Christian winked at Dom, reminding him that Christian’s been a regular customer at Large Bar since before Dominic even hit town. Crystal arrives and is much less thrilled than Dominic about Christian’s new job, and immediately pulls her mother into the office to let her know. “I can’t believe you! Mother, you overrode my decision to fire Rod and now you hire the enemy?! What’s next, replace karaoke night with ‘water balloon’ night where all the people who’ve hurt me can work on their target practice?!!!” Eleanor orders her daughter to stop this. “I’ve spoken to both Rod and Christian about what went on and how they’ve hurt you, and they were both extremely sorry and explained that the circumstances of what happened between them had absolutely nothing to do with you!” Crystal is less than comforted, “Oh great, so as long as they didn’t MEAN to devastate me, as long as Rod didn’t MEAN to cheat on me with a MAN that he claimed for months to hate, as long as Christian didn’t MEAN to thumb his nose at my relationship and seduce his dead husband’s son, as long as my feelings weren’t on their minds at ALL, then it’s all okay! How did I get here, where the only person I can count on is Trevor?!!” Crystal turns and storms off, refusing to listen to her mother’s rationalizations any longer. Didi arrives at Full Circle Lounge, an upscale establishment, catering to what appears to be an all-female clientele. Lauren Sapphyre is sitting at a table in a candle-lit corner with Carina, toasting the success of the Artemis campaign, and Didi decides to sit in a corner, out of the way, continually finding her eyes inexorably drawn to the happy women. A crisply dressed server brings a cocktail over, surprising Didi, who looks around when she’s informed that the lady by the bar sent her the drink. Moving much faster than Didi seemed prepared to handle, she averted eye contact and sat stiffly in her chair, hoping if she stayed just still enough, she could disappear. “Aw COME ON!!!” James shouted at the TV, as Theodore laughed at his son’s reaction from his armchair. James pulls a $20 bill from his pocket and slams it on the table, Theodore picking it up and folding it carefully before tucking it into the pocket of his robe. James shuts off the football game and swears he’ll get his 20 back on the next game. “We’ll see,” Theodore shrugs with a confidence, “we may need to go double or nothing, I’m feeling lucky this season.” Rolo chases Dana into the room, tickling her. They stop and straighten up when they realize James and Theodore are there. “Sorry!” Dana apologizes, trying to back up and leave with Rolo. “Wait, don’t you want to share your news?!” Theodore asked, leaving Dana puzzled. Theodore elaborated, “How you and your friend Rolo here scored in the top five percent of my class on the final this semester?!” Dana realizes, “OH! That... Well it was important for Rolo to redeem himself this semester and I worked so hard with him that I practically memorized everything. But one good final exam will only get us so far. We hear you’re teaching the advanced class next semester... we might need to bribe some of those overachiever students to give us their spots!” Dana jokes. Dana tries to push Rolo out the door, but James stops them, “Oh wait!” James pulls a sheet of paper from between the couch cushions, “Looks like I found one of your study tools here in the couch. Must’ve gotten lodged there during a study break, when you two were... stretching... on the couch. What is this? Very unusual study tool,” James waves it in the air, and Dana’s face is overcome with pure panic. Theodore reaches for it, curious about what the unusual study tool is, and Dana rushes in to snatch it before Theodore can see it. Dana quickly inspects it, only to find it’s a page full of doodles featuring her name, and Rolo’s, in between rough sketches of hearts and kissing and other nonsense. Dana breathes a sigh of relief, but also realizes James knows something about how she aced her grandfather’s history test. James is smirking confidently, knowing Dana had her way of passing with flying colors. “Come on, my uncle is just teasing me,” Dana ushers Rolo out, glaring at James on her way out the door. “Oh to be young and in lust,” James remarks to his father, leaning back comfortably on the couch. Dr. West asks Ava why she exists. Ava says to do what Aviva can’t do. “To deal,” Dr. West clarifies. Ava confirms. Dr. West keeps on, “Why?” Ava thinks... “because I’m stronger,” Ava asserts. Dr. West tells Ava she’s the strong part of Aviva that Aviva taps into when she needs to. Ava thinks on that. Dr. West asks whether Ava considers herself Aviva’s protector. Ava does consider herself that. Dr. West asks why Ava feels the need to protect Aviva from Dr. West. Ava admits it’s not really Dr. West, it’s the agenda that Dr. West represents. Dr. West requests clarification on this agenda. Ava explains that Dr. West probably never had to do the things Aviva had to do to cope. Dr. West says she doesn’t have any alters, no. Ava continues, “Your job is to make Aviva’s alters go away, and prescribe pills and make Aviva like everyone else. But Aviva’s already the way she’s supposed to be, alters and all. We’re the whole reason she’s still a functional human being.” Ramon arrives at The Redeye to find Det. Nathan Weber having a drink. “Who’s keeping the streets safe?” Ramon asks, patting Nathan on the back and pulling up a bar stool next to him. “Gotta leave it to the rest of the NYPD tonight because I am off duty,” Nathan finishes his beer and orders another. Ramon offers to pay for Nathan’s and one for himself. Nathan’s surprised by the gesture and thanks him. “Well, my motives are selfish. I need advice,” Ramon admits. “Shoot,” Nathan says, then, thinking twice, “so to speak.” Ramon asks whether Nathan thinks he should stay and help Aviva, or wash his hands of the whole situation. James has dozed off on the couch in the living room with a Nerf football resting on his chest, so Dana wakes him up by pouring a glass of water over him. “Hey, what the hell are you doing?!” James wipes his dripping face. “I figured you’d be thirsty, what with all the talking you were doing earlier about my studying tools,” Dana puts the now-empty water jug down and folds her arms grouchily. “Don’t get mad at me because you’re painfully transparent.” Dana plays dumb, “I have no idea what you’re referring to.” James urges her to come off it, “Babe, I guess you really think this entire family just fell off a turnip truck, but there are more than a few liars and manipulators under this roof and the blood in your veins came directly from one of them. If you think you’re the first Baldwin to turn my father and his job to your advantage, you have a hell of a lot more to learn than you think. Just don’t try to get too big too fast in this family because a few of us liars and manipulators take great pleasure in reminding people of their place. Got that, little girl?” James has collected some water from his face and hair, so he flicks it at Dana and laughs on his way out of the room. Rod and Christian grow closer, as they participate in a renewal of the Applewhite Christmas tree trimming. Things get playful and they end up wrestling to the couch and sharing a heated kiss, which Fiona inadvertently interrupts. After Christian excuses himself, Rod asks Fiona if she thinks that his feelings for Christian are an insult to their father’s memory. Fiona doesn’t think so. Rod continues to struggle... still wanting to follow his heart to Christian. Thomas sneaks up on Rebecca at the Hunter College library, quietly exclaiming how good it is to catch up with his favorite young chemist, whom he never seems to see anymore. Rebecca brushes off Thomas’s accolades humbly. They share a sweet kiss, but are interrupted by Dana, who doesn’t seem to be aware that people are supposed to keep their voices down in a library, “Ya know, ever since I found out you were my uncle, it’s really weird watching you two kiss,” she admits, joining them without invitation. Dana admits she’s been looking all over for Thomas, though in retrospect she really should have thought to start looking there. The notion that Thomas would naturally be at the library is something he feels he should be offended by. “What’s so urgent, my plucky little niece?” Thomas asks, choosing to be charmed by her lack of filter. Dana wastes no time in getting to the point, “You were so helpful in finding my mother, as defective as she may be, that I need you to help me find out everything there is to know about Trevor Allen...” The name rings a bell for Rebecca, “Trevor Allen? That’s so weird, he’s actually engaged to my sister... what do you need to know about him?” Dana reveals that Trevor might just be her biological father. Thomas and Rebecca are stunned. At Full Circle, the woman (Lauren B. Martin), wearing a bold blue power suit, and with her curly hair coiffed stylishly up on top of her head, makes her way to Didi’s table in the corner, and joins her. Didi’s breathing accelerates, with this next twist she hadn’t planned for. “Forgive me, but I had to come over and say hello. I’m Rita.” Didi’s so blindsided she nearly forgets to reply, as if she’s watching this happen, and it’s not actually happening to her. “Oh, hi... I mean, I’m... Aurora.” Didi is caught off guard by her own lie. “A beautiful name,” Rita admires, studying her face, transfixed by it. Rita seems to forget to speak as well, “Well I should tell you I’m normally not the type to send a woman a drink, and I definitely am not the type to think that entitles me to just invite myself to join you, but I usually end my workdays here, and I have never seen you here before... I figured I might not get another chance.” Didi still seems confused as to why Rita even initiated this conversation. Rita continues, “You have the most remarkable, flawless skin.” Didi sips her drink awkwardly... nervously. Rita admires Didi’s golden hair, which seems to make Didi uncomfortable and whatever flickers of confidence Didi might be feeling quickly fade. Didi puts the glass down and pushes it an inch or two away from herself, thanking Rita, for the drink, and apologizing, “I’m sorry, you’re lovely... I just really must be going... I’m sorry.” Didi gets up to leave, nearly forgetting her purse and spinning in a circle to retrieve it before making a beeline to the elevator. Rita tries to ask for a phone number but Didi’s already gone. “Wait, a second,” Nathan wants to get this straight, “Aviva? You ARE talking about the Aviva with the personality disorder who knocked us both out, had us chained up in her apartment while she ran amok, nearly killed a woman and pushed an old man down a flight of stairs?” Ramon listened to the laundry list, “And she also slept with my younger brother who was a student in her class.” Nathan’s forgotten the question. Ramon explains, “she’s sick. Aviva is not well, it’s not her that did all those things, it’s a part of her mind that is broken, a part shaped and molded by some traumatic things in her past that I was most likely a trigger for.” Nathan asks why Ramon wants to help, so Ramon answers, “Well I loved her. I loved the woman she was before all this craziness. And I guess the only thing keeping me involved is that I really don’t believe that woman is gone forever. I just think she’s lost and doesn’t think it’s worth finding her way back because she doesn’t know if she has anything left out here.” Nathan doesn’t think Ramon needs to question what he should do at all. “Listen, Ramon, I dated a woman. On the surface, she was everything I could have wanted. I guess she still is. But there was a part of her... a part she never let me see... that was broken. Shaped by some traumatic things in her past. She didn’t have an alternate personality, or anything, but... well, she had a part of her that was locked away that she would never let me know about. So maybe it is a similar situation. But I stayed in it as long as I could because I loved her. I still love her, but she’s grown in her own direction and for whatever reason, she won’t have me. I don’t regret the work I put into it. I don’t blame her. We all do what we can to survive the ghosts of our past. Some can do it better than others. You obviously want to stay and help Aviva. Maybe because you still have feelings for her... maybe because you feel responsible for her. But it sounds like she needs all the help she can get. She could do a lot worse than a standup guy like you, right?” Ramon isn’t so certain she could do worse. Dr. West promises she doesn’t want to make Ava or Manny disappear, “The alters are supposed to be a team, and a team listens to each other and makes decisions together. Each member of the team brings their own strengths to the game, like your protectiveness, or Manny’s willfulness, and the best team cooperates with each other. I’m here to help the team communicate better, listen to each other, and get the team members on the same page.” Ava never thought of it that way. Dr. West continues, “Did you ever want to talk to Aviva or Manny and tell them something? Something about you or anybody else?” Ava thinks, and admits she tried to do that when she was sending Aviva messages about Ramon and Rachel, to warn Aviva about who she could trust. Dr. West thought that was very creative and caring of Ava to do that. Dr. West proposes Ava write a real letter, a nice one, telling Aviva about Ava. Ava agrees, but only it Dr. West promises that Aviva will get it, and be the first to read it. Dr. West gives her solemn promise. Thomas arrives at Baldwin Enterprises and knocks on Jenna’s door. “Who the hell let you in here?!” Jenna barked. “You tell someone your name is Baldwin, it opens doors around Baldwin Enterprises,” Thomas smiled. “You want to work for the family company? Cause I just found a reason to fire my receptionist,” Jenna sneered, motioning him in. Thomas sat before Jenna, who gathered her paperwork and closed it in a file folder in case Thomas came to spy for VSI. “No need, Sis, VSI has seen many flash-in-the-pan wannabe competitors like you come and go. And VSI is always left standing.” Jenna’s patience wears thin, “This is... cute, and all, but we grown-ups have things to do! Busy, busy, busy! I’m sure Henry Von Stadt is just waiting for that mocha frappuccino!” Thomas is here to ask for relationship advice, actually. Jenna’s taken aback, “From me? I thought you would go to our flash-in-the-pan wannabe sister Aurora Borealis for advice on women,” Jenna laughs to herself. Thomas sidesteps Jenna’s joke on their brother Eddie. Jenna wonders what the problem is, so Thomas explains. “Well... Rebecca’s sister is getting married. And Rebecca is really worried because she doesn’t know the guy very well and this all happened really fast. And it seems like you know this guy, so I was hoping you could tell me something about Trevor Allen, anything, just to help me put Rebecca’s mind at ease. You... went to college with him?” Thomas fishes. Jenna is flustered by the unexpected questions and becomes immediately suspicious of Thomas, as she usually is. “Listen Tommy, I knew Trevor. A lifetime ago. He was some big man on campus, everybody’s friend. But he certainly wasn’t mine, and I certainly don’t know what kind of man he is today. So I can’t help you, or Rebecca, or her sister. So get out, I’ve got work to do.” Thomas apologizes for opening a touchy subject, and heads for the door. Jenna’s mind races, “Wow, Dana, so you’re really not letting this go.” “My parents were good, loyal people. But they died when we were very young,” Ramon told Nathan, “I was barely sixteen, Rolo was so young he only remembers the weirdest little details about them. But on her deathbed my mother told me to take care of my brother, and I took that very seriously. I always wanted to set a good example for him, work hard, be able to give him every opportunity that our parents wouldn’t be able to give him. Before I ever made a decision, my first thought was how this was going to affect Rolo, what impact will this make on his life, is this something he can learn from?” Nathan thinks that’s extremely generous and speaks strongly of Ramon’s character. “Maybe,” Ramon half-agrees, “but I’ve never been terribly good at keeping Rolo on that path. It seemed the more mature I tried to be, the more Rolo resented my efforts to be that surrogate father, he rebelled, every slip I ever made, every mistake, he relished in it because he could use it to excuse his own misbehavior. I’m the only person Rolo has to measure himself by and that’s a lot of pressure on us both. I was drawn to Aviva because she was so respectable, so centered and mature and such a positive role model. She was the perfect woman to help me keep Rolo on track. But... I met Rachel and I had a moment of weakness where I wanted a night that was purely for my satisfaction, not another example to set for Rolo, not another brick in the wall of inspiration for him.” Nathan understood, “you just needed something for you. You needed to not be responsible for a night. I get it. There’s a million perfectionists on the force. If you try to be perfect all the time, the pressure builds up until a moment of release, where you let off that steam.” Ramon is glad he understands, “But I became addicted to those moments, it was like a drug, the secret of Rachel, who asked nothing of me, placed no expectations on me... it was seductive. And so now that secret exploded, and Aviva completely unraveled. It’s my fault.” Nathan realizes Ramon’s problem now, “So now you’re not only responsible for everything in the world going right for Rolo... you’re responsible for Aviva’s mental health now, too. Listen, Ramon, the more pressure you put on yourself, the more you make yourself the centerpiece to everyone’s success or survival... the more explosive your moments of release are going to be. And the more damage they can do to the very people you want to protect.” Eddie arrives at Large Bar early for his hosting gig and plops down at the bar appearing to have a lot on his mind. Dominic walks up, cleaning a glass with a rag. “Is it Aurora’s time of the month again already?!” Dom asks, pulling a laugh out of Eddie. “It’s always Aurora’s time of the month,” Eddie jokes along. Dom wonders what’s really up. Eddie explains he’s gotten several missed calls from Shawn and he’s doing his best to stay strong and not answer them, but it seems like he’s heard more from Shawn since Eddie ended things than when they were supposedly together. “Shawn seems like the type to keep a girl on edge,” Dom sympathizes... but can’t help but ask, “Are you missing him? Do you want to answer?” Eddie admits that he does miss him. But they’ve tried, for a year, and it’s not meant to work. Dom suggests the possibility that Shawn’s decided to make a change for Eddie. “I mean, Shawn has no shortage of people he can sleep with, I’m sure, but he’s obviously calling you for a reason,” Dom offers, reflecting on his own night of passion with Shawn, which was the last Dom saw or heard from him. Eddie contemplates Dom’s input as he spins the phone around and around in his hand. “DRINKS ON ME - LARGE BAR - HELP ME CELEBRATE MY NEW JOB!” read the text Jenna Baldwin received from Christian Avery Field. It sounded like a welcome break from the endless brainstorming she’s been doing for her next attempt at snagging a client from the clutches of VSI. “I’m there!” Jenna text back, hoping for a night of fun. She tossed her coat on and flipped the lights off on her way out of the office. Crystal decides to throw an engagement party and asks her sister Rebecca to help set it up. The guest list, as per Crystal’s request, includes Rod and Christian, and will be held at Large Bar, not The Redeye. Rebecca warns her sister she’s asking for trouble, but Crystal insists it is the best way to convince Rod the child is Trevor’s, by putting on a great show. Rebecca wonders what Crystal really even knows about Trevor, and Crystal lashes out at her sister for trying to undermine her new relationship and plant seeds of doubt. “Where’s the accountability?” Ramon asked Nathan. “So I cheat on Aviva, she spirals out of control, hurts a bunch of people and is locked away in an institution to try to put the pieces of her life back together, and what, I just walk away because I don’t want to be responsible for her well-being? Because it’s too much pressure on me? I don’t have any multiple personalities as a defense mechanism, I have all my faculties, I have a job...” Nathan shakes his head, “I’m not endorsing no accountability, Ramon, but Aviva’s problems are bigger than what you did to hurt her. She’s had these alters for years, they were dormant, you woke them up, yes, but they would have resurfaced at some point whether you were in her life or not. Live a good life, Ramon, do things your brother can be proud of, things that will inspire him. And that may include sticking by Aviva through this tough time. But you need to be true to yourself. If you aren’t in love with Aviva, don’t try to force yourself to be just to set a good example for your brother. It’ll give him a false perception about what love is, and that’s not what you want to do, I’m sure.” Ramon agrees that’s not what he wants. Nathan tells him, “If you want my two cents, then absolutely, be a part of the solution, help Aviva through this, be one of her support systems, be a friend. But own your mistakes if you make them. Learn from them, and use them to help Rolo figure out what not to do, how not to be. No one’s perfect, no matter how hard any of us try.” Lucia visits Dr. West at Shady Glen to discuss her daughter. Lucia nervously asks if Aviva is still expecting. Dr. West says Aviva is. Lucia tells Dr. West that she really does want Aviva to get well, she loves her daughter, all her children, more than anything, and has spoken to Carina. Lucia tells Dr. West that she and Carina are both willing to participate in family therapy, if it will help. Dr. West appreciates it, but thinks for right now, it’s best to do work with the alters and get them to a cooperative place before starting to discuss the family history and dynamics. Lucia claims to understand. Before leaving, Lucia wants Dr. West to make sure Aviva... or Ava... knows that Lucia is willing to care for Aviva’s child and there are options and alternatives to Ava’s abortion plan. Dr. West assures her that she’s working to get the alters communicating before any hasty decisions are made. Lucia’s comforted by the doctor’s reassurances. Aurora Borealis was gearing up to kick off karaoke night at Large Bar when Jenna entered, scanning the room for Christian, finding him taking an order from two young men on the couch in the corner. Christian heads to the bar to put the order in to Rod, who’s serving up shirtless behind the bar, so Jenna catches up with him there. “HOW did you know this is just what I needed? Aside from my gender-confused half-brother, that is,” Jenna said, magically combining gratitude with criticism. “Your brother is quite an entertainer, so give him a chance. But you’re not here for him, you’re here for me tonight anyway! Grab a seat, you’re drinking Red Devils tonight!” Jenna rubbed her hands together, looking forward to that strong, sweet drink. “Listen, all I’m saying, is that this all happened so suddenly,” Rebecca tries to explain, “You were working with Trevor, then suddenly you’re pregnant and engaged to Trevor. How well do you really know this man? Do you know anything about his past, where he’s from, his history?” Crystal scoffs, “Of course I know all about him, we’ve shared intimate details of our lives with each other, he understands me, and my needs.” Rebecca doesn’t seem reassured. Crystal’s frustration with her sister persists, “Well what’s going on with you? Why are you suddenly so suspicious of Trevor anyway?!” Rebecca reluctantly tells Crystal that he may already have a child he doesn’t know about. “What?!” Crystal is thrown completely. Rebecca explains, “Remember I told you about my roommate at the dorm who turned out to be Thomas’s niece? Well it sounds like Dana’s mother Jenna has some kind of history with Trevor, going back to the time when Jenna was in college... around the time Dana was conceived.” Crystal’s eyes glaze over, and she shakes it off, certain this is a coincidence. And to settle the whole thing, Crystal’s going to go find Trevor and talk to him about it, clear up the whole misunderstanding. At Full Circle, Carina admits to Lauren that she’s having second thoughts about participating in Aviva’s therapy. Lauren doesn’t see why. Carina is proud of all the work she’s done building her own life, and doesn’t want to take away from it to dredge up some deep, dark family history from a family she really doesn’t plan to be a part of. Lauren encourages Carina to take comfort in the fact that she has a happy, healthy life and is merely offering a piece of her time to help someone else attempt to reclaim a happy and healthy life of their own. Carina admits that she used to be jealous of Aviva, how their father used to take Aviva on little trips all the time, and Aviva would never tell Carina where they went. To think of that now... Carina feels sick to think that it could have been those trips that shattered Aviva into pieces. Christian grabs a minute during a lull to sit with Jenna, bringing her a second Red Devil for the night. “So lemme get this straight,” Jenna tries to clarify, “You hooked up with Terrence’s son after the funeral and you guys are together now? That’s an amazing bait and switch, you’ll have to teach me that sometime...” Christian insists it wasn’t like that, things just kind of exploded out of nowhere. “I’ll bet they did,” Jenna agrees, teasing him. Jenna sizes Rod up. “He’s cute, looks like he’s got a lot under that smooth, toned surface... just needs to cut that hair. Then he’d be pretty marketable. But he was never with a guy before you?” Jenna’s impressed. “That’s what he says. He’s still adjusting to all his feelings, so I’d definitely believe it,” Christian assesses. Jenna looks Christian up and down like he’s trouble, “Well I don’t know what mojo you’ve got, but I’m going to keep you far away from Shawn, I don’t want you turning him too!” Christian laughs, slapping Jenna playfully before returning to the patrons to take another round of orders. Behind Jenna, over her shoulder, we see Shawn come in the entrance, apparently looking for Eddie, who is on stage as Aurora. Shawn enters, watching Aurora, but stops dead when he thinks he recognizes the back of Jenna’s head. Peering around her carefully, Shawn realizes it is Jenna and quickly exits, with only Dominic having a chance to see him. The oblivious Jenna continues drinking her drink and trying to see the appeal of Aurora Borealis. Hattie was walking down a hospital hallway when she was grabbed from behind and pulled into a corridor! It was Ford Collins, who definitely needed work on greeting people. “What the hell are you trying to do, give me a heart attack?!” Hattie asked, flinging her purse at the ex-con. “Did you finish your letter to Aviva?” Dr. West asked Ava, who did finish it. Dr. West explains that the plan is for Aviva to read it and hopefully write a letter back. Ava is amused, “Pen pals with myself... what’s next, voicemails? A chat room just for us alters?” Dr. West tells Ava that some dissociative patients can experience co-consciousness, where alters can communicate and share tasks and activities at the same time. Ava gives Dr. West the letter and Dr. West starts to call Aviva out. Aviva returns to consciousness, feeling tired. Jenna is on Red Devil number 4, and karaoke is in full swing. “Am I cutting you off yet?” Christian asks, studying the effects of the drinks on Jenna. Jenna, only slightly tipsy, proves herself to have a high tolerance. Jenna wants to know, “So how was the sex?” eyeing Rod at the bar. Christian is only slightly shocked at the question and forgot what it was like to chat about things like this, “It was pretty damn good. We both were pretty frustrated so it relieved a lot of tension.” Jenna approved, “So you got the money and the man...” Christian looked at her like she should know better, “Security is great to have... been wishing for it all my life, and it’s amazing that Terrence was able to make that his last gift to me. But surely there was a time in your life where the money didn’t matter?” The faraway look in Jenna’s eye suggests there might have been a time. Crystal turns up at Trevor’s office and he’s happy to see her, “Hey sticky buns, I was just reading over our engagement party invitations and I was thinking... Large Bar? Isn’t it kind of weird to have our engagement party at a gay bar? I mean it’s hard enough working in the entertainment industry where everyone assumes you’re gay first and asks questions later, and it’s always been a problem for me, being so universally handsome that everyone wants a shot at me...” Crystal doesn’t seem to be listening to Trevor, and interrupts his rambling by throwing a framed newspaper article about Trevor directly at him, but missing her target. Crystal starts a rant of her own, “You swore! You swore you would be there for me, and help me, and support me through this... the toughest time in my life! I mean I know I don’t know you from a hole in the wall, but I would THINK that with the whole subject of a baby growing inside me that you would have told me! You would have mentioned SOMETHING!!!” Trevor is completely baffled as to what Crystal’s talking about. “Your DAUGHTER, you jackass! Dana?!?! It makes me sick to think that you’re supposed to be the father of this baby when you had the poor judgment to knock up that self-absorbed, vicious, social-climbing, money-grubbing, snobby... bitch! She has never ONCE gotten my name right, do you know that?!” Trevor tries to process what Crystal’s telling him, but it all seems so unreal. It doesn’t stop Crystal, though, “And I’m supposed to be, what, attaching myself and my illegitimate child to your little clan of opportunists?! You were supposed to be my safety net, my very own blank slate, my chance at a fresh start, and now here you are, with all your very own designer baggage to sort through!” Trevor doesn’t know what she’s talking about as far as Dana. Jenna never told him anything about being Dana’s father. But no matter what the situation with Dana is, he is committed to helping Crystal with her baby. Trevor’s reassurances appear to calm Crystal, and he takes her into his arms, comforting her, while his mind races about the notion that Dana might be his grown daughter. “I followed you here,” Ford told Hattie, admitting that he wondered where Hattie goes when she’s off work. Ford wonders who Hattie knows at the hospital. Hattie doesn’t think it’s any of Ford’s business. Hattie demands to know why she was being followed, “Because I’m ready to give you a little more to work with. You want info on the Von Stadts? You can start with Dominic Soletti... he was my little sidekick the night we ransacked Large Bar looking for some incriminating evidence that a deceased employee left in his wife’s possession in the event of his untimely death. Dom’s been a busy boy for VSI... running their drugs ever since our hostage situation at Large Bar went bad after this guy Rod got shot in all the commotion.” Hattie’s eyes grew wide with the amount of information Ford was laying at her feet. Julia spies her mother talking to Ford in the hospital corridor and wonders what their connection is. Ford sees they’re being watched and makes a speedy exit, not knowing why the doctor was staring at him. Hattie turns to see why Ford made such a hasty retreat and Julia’s standing right there. Hattie is thrilled to see her, she’s been looking all over for her! “Mother, who was that man?” Aurora Borealis notices that Jenna is definitely feeling her 6th Red Devil, and decides to tell the crowd that his sister is in the audience. Aurora challenges Jenna to do a number! Aurora pulls Jenna to the stage and she slurs to him that his makeup is pretty good, but the outfit is dreadful. “Well I guess I’ll need to go out any buy myself a Jenna Baldwin Original with my tips from tonight!” Aurora gets a cheer from the crowd and passes the tip bucket to the nearest patron so it can circle the room one more time. “I’m sure my gowns don’t come in your size,” Jenna jokes, inspiring another reaction from the crowd who loves a good ‘back and forth’. “So what will you be singing tonight?” Aurora gets Jenna back on track. Jenna decides to perform “Hey Big Spender” to the audience, and they eat it up with a spoon! “Do you remember our last conversation?” Dr. West asks a groggy Aviva. “I think so... I remember Ramon was there,” she says, looking uncertain. Dr. West was glad. West tells Aviva that she has reason to believe Aviva is dissociative. Aviva is less anxious this time, and is trying to make sense of the random puzzle pieces. West wants her to think things through calmly, thinking of the last conversation they had. Aviva thinks she dozed off, and that it was minutes ago, but it was actually six days ago. Aviva clarifies, “So you’re saying that I dissociated for six days, and some other me was running the show in my place?” West says that’s a fair simplification of events. Aviva adds that such conditions usually indicate some abuse occurred in earlier years. Dr. West asks her not to worry about that, and so far there have been no confirmations of any abuse. Aviva is skeptical, “So I just have personalities just to keep me company?” Dr. West only means they haven’t zeroed in on the root cause yet. It’s a process. Aviva wondered what happened to even get her there, to Shady Glen Sanitarium. Dr. West tells her that it appears an alter or Aviva’s was implicated in some illegal activity and she was declared unfit to stand trial, so Aviva is there to get well. Aviva instantly worries, “Did I hurt anyone?!” Dr. West said there were no permanent injuries. Aviva doesn’t understand what could have caused her to lose it. Was it worry over Carina’s coma? Is Carina still comatose? Dr. West tells her Carina is awake and well again. Aviva wants to see her sister, but Dr. West wants to keep Aviva focused on getting herself well. Aviva doesn’t know how to start that process, this is all so surreal... like a dream. Dr. West hands her a journal, informing Aviva that it may be her start. “One of your alters wrote you a message,” Dr. West tells her. Aviva takes the book cautiously, as if it was going to weigh a hundred pounds, and a look of disbelief won’t leave her face. Aviva’s stares at its cover, and admits, “... I’m afraid to open this.” Dr. West is curious as to why. Aviva thinks, “...Maybe because whatever’s in here... will take my situation from the abstract into reality.” Dr. West confirms that it most likely will, and that’s the first step to getting better. Eddie gets home and stops dead in his hallway to find Shawn sitting on the floor in front of his door, head resting against the frame. “Shawn,” Eddie couldn’t hide his swell of emotions. “You wouldn’t answer my calls,” Shawn explains his presence. “This is a bad idea,” Eddie warns him. “I’m sorry... I’ve just... I’ve been a wreck since you ended things, and I... I need you. I just want to spend a night, just to be close to you. I just don’t know what to do.” Shawn’s obviously at loose ends over this, so Eddie walks up to Shawn, to his apartment door, and lets them both in. Christian helps Jenna out of a cab, wrapping her arm over his shoulders to get her to her door. Jenna’s mumbling lines from “Hey Big Spender” to herself and thinking aloud about how she could show Christian a good time if he weren’t into men. Christian politely agrees that she probably could. Trevor arrives on the doorstep looking a bit more serious than he normally does. Christian and Jenna stop in the doorway, noticing him, and Trevor’s appearance sobers Jenna slightly, but not by much. “I have something to ask you Jenna, and I want you to be straight with me,” Trevor says firmly. “Listen, buddy, this isn’t a good time, it’s been a long night. And frankly, it’s kinda creepy that you’re lurking out here at this hour,” Christian tells him protectively. “Don’t you have heterosexuals to seduce?” Trevor quips without losing his serious edge, “run along and play, Christian.” Christian straightens his back, offended at Trevor’s verbal assault. Jenna tries to focus herself, putting her guard up because of Trevor. Trevor looks at her squarely and tells her, “Some people are under the impression lately that I fathered your daughter-come-lately, Dana. I want to know.” Jenna is dumbfounded at the question and tears up immediately. Christian sees her reaction, and tries to usher her inside, “That’s enough, Trevor, you can do this another time.” Trevor’s insistent, “NO, we will do this now. Jenna... is Dana my daughter??!” Jenna turns to face Trevor and spits, “YES! Yes, you son of a bitch! HAPPY?! Go light a cigar!!!!” Jenna tears into her building and Christian follows, locking the door behind them. Trevor stands there, under the street lamp, letting the truth sink in. Eddie and Shawn lay in Eddie’s bed, Shawn curled up, clinging to Eddie’s body almost desperately. “I want to try to be a friend to you,” Eddie told Shawn. “I’ve never been this broken up about a man before,” Shawn admits, “It was always about sex for me, but with you... it was real. It was about you. Listen to me going on and on, any respect you may have had left for me probably went right out the window.” Eddie doesn’t know what to say, “I have to respect you when you can be honest with yourself and speak your mind, what you really feel.” Shawn’s tone gets more serious, “Eddie, I don’t want to be without you. I want us to try again, help me be honest with myself, help me find myself.” Eddie looks torn. Would it be fair of Eddie to fault Shawn for coming to terms with himself on his own time? Shawn kissed Eddie, which felt so good. Eddie felt in that kiss that Shawn had all his feelings in that kiss. Shawn seduced Eddie more with every successive kiss. Luring Eddie in with words of how much he needed him, Shawn’s affections gradually grew more aggressive. Eddie surrendered to his feelings and they made love once again. Hattie claimed he was lost and asking for directions to the parking garage. Julia thought he looked familiar... and then she remembered. “He was one of the people you caught burglarizing the Von Stadt Penthouse... Mother, you didn’t have anything to do with that robbery, did you?!” Julia’s accusation offended Hattie, who was happy to be able to honestly deny guilt in something she was being accused of. “Then what the hell were you doing with that criminal? What are you up to?” Julia’s questions flustered Hattie, who quickly passed out! Julia’s not convinced, and assumed Hattie was dodging her questions. After several urgings to stop the act, Julia soon realized that her mother wasn’t faking and called for a gurney to get her to the ER to run some tests. >> In the Coming Weeks on Beyond the Horizon:

So apparently I read this already but never commented!!! I loved this episode as I do all the others. I can't help but be drawn to the Ava/Aviva storyline. It's so intense but not over the top. The character of Lucia kind of irritates me. I'm not sure why, she just does. I loved the Christian/Jenna friendship and I loved the scene where Jenna confirmed to Trevor that Dana was his. I hope you explain why she tried to hide it more. I mean I understand she didn't want people to know she was pregnant, but what is the reason she didn't tell him when everyone found out that Dana was in fact Jenna's daughter? Crystal is absolutely obnoxious and irritating! How is it that she can be the sister of Rebecca, who is intelligent and level headed? I get that Crystal was hurt by Rod and what not, but I mean seriously...you're a big girl, stop acting like a child! lol. I think that Crystal needs to make a stop at the sanitarium! I was sad to not see very much of Eleanor this time around, but you can't feature everyone all the time. I do have to say that I did love the James/Theodore/Dana/Rolo scene. That was kind of funny. I like the dynamic between James and Dana and the James/Theodore football game scene was cute. |

I'm glad you're hanging in QT! Check out week 4! Christian's job is definitely going to put him into more of the canvas by working for Eleanor and Crystal (awkward!), working with Rod (might help them to spend time together away from the home they shared with Terrence), and with Dominic (whose shady dealings might get picked up on by Christian, who knows Dom so well!)... A lot of things will come out of this job, as we've seen already in Jenna's visit to Large Bar. Scott! Stick with me! I'm trying very hard to keep a story that is so sensational on paper somehow grounded and relatable. It's definitely the most outrageous story right now. It's a challenge! But I'm trying to balance the realities of the therapy with the sensationalism of a "soap" story. It's teaching me a lot! Jenna really needed a friend, and I feel like she'd be a gay magnet. Who doesn't love a bitchy selfish woman as their head fag hag (or "fruit fly" as some prefer to be called), so I think Christian and Jenna would be a natural fit. Check out Week 4 when Jenna opens up to Christian a little bit about her pregnancy/adopting Dana out. Crystal's really struggling. And you know there's always one sibling who has their head together, and one that's coming apart at the seams all the time. Plus, Crystal's pregnant, her hormones are heightening her emotional response to things, and it's a lot to adjust to when the father of your child tells you he slept with a man! Crystal needs to establish for herself something real that she can count on, once she gets a taste of some security she might start to even out a little. Thanks about the Baldwins, I like establishing the dynamics between all these unique Baldwins. Eleanor's story is in a bit of a lull, but when you see Hattie next week you might get a sense of the next obstacle coming up for Eleanor! Dan! Come back!!! |
