The smoking ban (in the long run) is an excellent thing really, 20-30 years from now all the 'cool kids' who started smoking in school because their friends did will of either quit, because they can't smoke inside pubs/clubs etc, or won't go out and will be replaced by non-smokers. With the massively increased awareness of smoking shoved down children's throats from an early age, I think we'll see a huge decline in smokers in our life-time, which I'm looking forward to. On the drinking front, I highly doubt increasing the price on a pint will do anything, other than hit the older people who have a pint or two once a week/month while spending several hours chatting in their local. Realistically who are the worst offenders when it comes to alcohol related problems? I bet it's two age groups; The under 18's (won't make a difference, they can't buy pints anyway - Cracking down on supermarket super low prices will sort them out) and the 18-20's who have more money than sense and don't have anything better to spend their money on... They'll still buy the insane amount of booze they do and continue to pollute an otherwise social habitat for the general person. What annoys me most is how far people go in the way of getting drunk; People just seem to be clueless about their limits, I won't lie, I've got fucking wasted a few times because either it was a friend's bday party and I was crashing on their sofa (so it didn't matter how drunk I was, assuming I didn't die from it) or because I hadn't drank much in a while and my 'limit' had come down (happened twice, once was Kier's fault, the other I blame on pug's). It seems like most people in my age bracket think that they can't have fun unless they drink to the point of alcohol poisoning. :s |
