Read up on this site http://www.axethebeertax.com/ and show your support, in short, they're going to fuck over pubs (and thus the owners/employee's) as well as anyone who drinks beer and to a lesser degree, those who drink anything at all in pubs. I got sent this link by a friend and it took me a few minutes to read it all and send my local MP the automated email (which is very well written), I strongly suggest anyone else who lives in the UK does this too.

Also, please copy and past this message to other forums you visit, so the word can be spread past the 30k mark and in to the 100k, I doubt even the Government can ignore that many people.

They already shafted pubs with the smoking ban.

:(

We noticed it immediatly in out entertainment work... pubs make up 80% of the venues I currently work... this would be another slap in the face for singers/bands/acts also as the pubs won't be able to afford to pay for entertainment!

Thank fuck for the smoking ban, I know it meant the pub's numbers went down, but I know for a fact that almost all the workers in my old watering-hole didn't smoke, yet they were forced to spend hours upon hours in a really smoky atmosphere. This tax is just another way for the Government to make money, they need to stop wasting it and use it more constructively, rather than blowing however many million/billions they have done, over and over again.

haha! I felt it more than most... stood in teh corner of the bar... singing for 3 hours... breathing in 2nd hand smoke :P

I've never smoked, but I'd rather have the pub full and smokey and keep my job than an empty pub which can't afford my wages :(

People don't want to have to stand outside for a fag... so they just don't bother going out now. Especially if its raining.

It is like they are literally trying to destory everything that is social in Britain. It's amazing what they charge us for really... Hospital Car parking charges etc... then they piss away the money they make on takes and charges on lining their own pockets or refurbishing old council buildings that never get used with antique furniture and paintings costing £millions.

One of the many reasons I'm trying to work on my escape to Canada...rofl! :D

It doesnt actually bother me.. Alcohol is the cause of most problems in the UK.. Maybe people will drink less if the prices go up! :P

Im also very glad about the smoking ban.. I work in clubs.. well actually one club now.. Its the busiest in town and there is a balcony people can smoke so it doesnt affect us luckily.

In the long run people will be used to it and things will just be the same :)

The smoking ban (in the long run) is an excellent thing really, 20-30 years from now all the 'cool kids' who started smoking in school because their friends did will of either quit, because they can't smoke inside pubs/clubs etc, or won't go out and will be replaced by non-smokers. With the massively increased awareness of smoking shoved down children's throats from an early age, I think we'll see a huge decline in smokers in our life-time, which I'm looking forward to.

On the drinking front, I highly doubt increasing the price on a pint will do anything, other than hit the older people who have a pint or two once a week/month while spending several hours chatting in their local. Realistically who are the worst offenders when it comes to alcohol related problems? I bet it's two age groups; The under 18's (won't make a difference, they can't buy pints anyway - Cracking down on supermarket super low prices will sort them out) and the 18-20's who have more money than sense and don't have anything better to spend their money on... They'll still buy the insane amount of booze they do and continue to pollute an otherwise social habitat for the general person.

What annoys me most is how far people go in the way of getting drunk; People just seem to be clueless about their limits, I won't lie, I've got fucking wasted a few times because either it was a friend's bday party and I was crashing on their sofa (so it didn't matter how drunk I was, assuming I didn't die from it) or because I hadn't drank much in a while and my 'limit' had come down (happened twice, once was Kier's fault, the other I blame on pug's). It seems like most people in my age bracket think that they can't have fun unless they drink to the point of alcohol poisoning. :s

A well needed BUMP!

I had a reply back (via email) a few days after emailing my Local MP, asking for my full address, so a reply could be sent, which I gave them, a letter just came through the door with 'House of Commons' on the front of the envelope (2nd class stamp, LOL);

"Thank you for your recent communication concerning the campaign to save the British pub.

I have written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer about this matter and have signed Early Day Motion 10.

Please do not hesitate to contact me again at any time."

I r winn0r!

This might as well be none of my business, as i don't live in the UK, but i'd like to point something out to the quoted post.

Ethanol, while being per se toxic, in small/moderate amounts doesn't impair
human organism in many ways. In fact, with small doses, the only possible effect is brain atrophy.

In large amounts, and prolonged consumption Ethanol causes vision changes, impaired memory, mental instablity, cancer, anemia, etc., etc.

From what i gathered, this involves mostly beer, so i'll stick with that.
Beer has much lower amount of alcohol than other alcoholic beverages (comparable could be weak liqours and strong beer types i suppose, but then again, i am no connoisseur of consumable Ethanol, so feel free to correct me here.)

To get any symptoms i mentioned, requires vast amounts of beer drank on a daily basis. Which some people i suppose do.

It's a matter of circumspection, it wont kill you in small amounts, will even make you healthier to some extent (reduced risk of developing gallstones and kidney stones, increases insulin activity and so on, and so forth.)

And also, from what i heard, this places pubs in a tight financial situation,
leading to a number of those being closed.Which costs people their jobs,
something nice to have, especially when the financial crisis runs rampant on the stock exchanges.

Simply don't drink excessive amounts of it, and you'll be fine.

Thank you for your attention.

Krann

Dude.. I was so confused when I opened this. I really thought it said Beer Taxi. As in a guy that would bring you beer so you didn't have to go to the pub.

As for the general conversation..
Smoking Ban good. They did it in Germany a year ago. One of the best things ever.
Agree with Dark that we shouldn't HAVE to drink to be social. But we also shouldn't be PREVENTED from it either.

As an American I can tell you from the history books that trying to stop alcohol completely doesn't work. It just makes it a society taboo, so underage kids drink it more unsupervised and when you can be legal you go insane for a few years. Made all the more dangerous by the fact we have to drive everywhere.
So IMO the best point is education and removing stigma. Don't make it taboo, then people want it more, and also don't make it weird to not drink. I know every country has issues with alcohol related problems, but I have been really impressed on average with Germany in that respect. Most people above 18 drink with food and over an entire night. And really I think those that are going to cause problems with Alcohol are fairly likely to cause problems without it too.

Ok, soapbox over. Still disappointed there is no such thing as a Beer Taxi.
