Grell and I were having an interesting discussion today about the various steps we've taken or plan on taking to prepare ourselves for the possibility (inevitability?) of future catastrophes on the scale of Katrina or larger. Of course this totally relates to our Dead Reign and Chaos Earth games, but in a real sense, it pertains to survival in RL. Anyhow, I thought I'd start this thread for players and lurkers to chime in and begin a discussion that I hope will help inform each other of what we can do to prepare for a survival situation. So. Let me start with this question (but feel free to take this discussion wherever you see fit): 1. Do you have a bug-out-bag? And, as a corollary, what's in it? |

My bug out bag consists of my pistol and 200 rounds of ammo. Anything else can be scavenged from stores or other peoples houses if it comes down to it. Being as I live in an area that isn't subject to hurricanes or tornado's or even major earthquakes, warm clothes are already in my possession. |

Nope, no preparations for such thing. I've spent too little time in one spot to really worry about it at this point. |

There are very few disasters i would leave the house for, at least for the first several days, but if possible, i would rather stay many weeks or even months. Let the rest of society finish their riots and looting and whatnot, kwim? After that, i would be willing to pack up the necessities and travel to a more defensible location, such as my parents' house (i've actually discussed this and several other details and contingency plans with them; they mostly think i'm nuts, but agree with the logic of most of my suggestions). |

We don't have one actively stored and ready to move, but we do have a list of what to bring should it hit the fan. The list varies as life does, but there is one constant and that is we cannot have something too big or too heavy to walk with. Why? Because in the event of a city-wide evacuation, roads will be deadlocked. That said, best and most effective way out is going to be on foot. I suppose that is why our bug out bag lists are made to fit in a back pack, so we can take more than one if need be. |

I've got a backpack in my closet that I can grab at a moment's notice if the shit hits the proverbial fan. Included in the pack are: .357 Smith and Wesson revolver 40 rounds (.357) 50 rounds (12 gauge) 6 Cliff Bars bag of dried apricots fleece sleeping sack hammock water purifier matches knife solar flashlight small folding solar panel and cable to charge USB devices (like my phone) 2-liter folding water bladder 2 pairs of hiking socks rain pants & jacket And next to the bug-out-bag is my 12 gauge Remington and three gallons of water. Luckily, I live on the outskirts of town, so I can grab the bag, shotgun and water - jump in the truck and drive as far north as possible before setting out on foot. I'd like to establish some fuel and food caches somewhere along my planned route, but I have not done so yet. |

Well don't have much packed away, but I know what I would take when hell breaks loose ![]() Took a couple wilderness survival classes, which are very informative, so I have this box (about lunch box size) that have these items in it. Bolin cubes Water proof matches and a lighter Solar blanket Knife 20 feet of rope (the the rope I no longer have... it is now part of a sculpture lol) Poncho Gauze High gage fishing line Compass Small container with newspaper in it And about 10 feet of 15ml and 10 mil surgical tubing There are other things around here that would be within easy reach, that I would plan on taking Gallon water jugs frozen in the freezer Lots of canned food and some dried food Road atlas Have lots of warm cloths Etc. Also carry things in my car, since it can snow here in a blink they are a good idea to keep, incase you get stranded somewhere. So I have in my car... Hunting knife Two thick blankets Gas can Extra oil Trans fluid Brake fluid Extra belt Couple extra bulbs 4' steel pry bar Always carry some sort of sketch book or paper in my car ![]() other random objects that might come in handy, tarp, hammer, nails, big coil of rope, fiberglass rods, bucket, spray paint, this chain mail stuff, plexi glass and plastics (yay art crap lol) And a first aid kit/roadside kit Planning on getting a jumper box to go in it I know the roads would more than likely be jam packed but I'm would probably take my car and get as far as I could with it, it might not be four wheel drive but I'm willing to put it to the test. I don't think it could handle a crazy 4x4 track but inner city stuff, taken curbs and driving through yards or whatever, it's got the power and the maneuverability (ford tuff and all ;)) Lots of back roads as well, several different ways to get through the mountains without taking the freeway (not that that is a guarantee but it's worth a shot) |

Vio! I hope (that when all hell breaks loose), you fire up that mustang and come down to get me. You quite possibly have the best get-away vehicle in the business.

Actually the best vehicle in the business would be my Jeep Wrangler named Sandy. Can mount a gun on top, or use it as a stabilizer for a rifle, can put the top on (soft top) for the winter and is high enough off the ground to go over most obstacles. |

That does sound like a good get-away vehicle Lunar. I've always thought that an armored truck run on bio-diesel would be a sweet post-apocalyptic vehicle. I think any truck, jeep, or SUV that could do well off road would be a good way to go. I just think that fuel will become an issue real quick. Also, Grell makes an important point that many of the nation's major roadways will be choked with traffic as people attempt a mass exodus from large metropolitan areas. Maybe an Enduro motorcycle would be the best. |

ya the roads would be jam packed. I'm just sayin that I would take mine lol because of the manuverability on it and doesn't eat up a whole bunch of gas and out on the open road it halls ass lol

Hauling ass can be a tremendous liability, especially in a disaster survival/recovery scenario. Your best bet would be to avoid any kind of car reliant evac plan if you're in a major population center, unless you've got ample warning of what's coming. But if you did decide to chance the roads, I'd make damn sure to prioritize what cannot be left behind if the worst happens and you're suddenly on foot. |

yep! like I said I would go as far as I could... but at the same time you might need a quick get away and sure a jeep is good on off road stuff but it also has a high center of gravity and rolls easy, plus the tent rood wouldn't offer much protection. ... probably bring my bike as well, once you have to ditch the car, no need for gas and can still get away faster then walking
