Anna stomps the snow off her boots before she descends the stairway, taking note of any conspicuous persons on the ground floor of the church.

"It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Granville," Anna says pleasantly, shaking the older woman's hand before her expression turns serious. "I've got bad news. I'm a journalist here for the recent murders and I've noticed that all of the girls were members of the choir and abstinence groups. The connection can't be a coincidence but Bernard Robertson has never attended mass and wouldn't have known. There may be more than one person involved in the murders. Have you seen anyone hanging around the group meetings, or have the girls mentioned anything odd?"

She checks her watch. "We're also on a timer. The murders have been once a month, like clockwork, and the next is due tonight. Is there anyone not here today? If you can tell me anything, Mrs. Granville, anything at all, you could save lives." She deliberately forgoes mentioning Sally Jensen, just on the off chance it could reveal something.

Throughout, Anna's voice is authoritative but sympathetic, hopefully alleviating the negative effects of any small-town distrust or the sudden shotgun-blast of questions and information. (Trust/Intimidate (96%) : [1d100] = 46 - Pass)

"Oh, another thing,"
she says, looking about. "Are there any police about? I know Reverend Garfunkle and I planned for them to be here."

Vargus shrugs off the passing feeling of recognition and turns to follow the rest of the group into the library. He would rather search a warm place that patrol a cold perimeter anyway.

Once inside, Vargus motion to the other to come closer. In a quiet voice he attempted to explain, "We should be quiet so as not to alert them to our presence." He looked to the librarian, "Is there any part of the library that's older, as in if the library has been expanded or renovated, perhaps part of the original structure?"

If she gives him an answer,he nods. "I'll check there"

If not, he shrugs and suggests "Then let's split up and go look for some teenagers out past their bedtime."

Marcus - what is the plan?

Anna, Mrs. Granville is shocked as you get straight to it.

"Yes... um... right" she says nervously. "The Reverend mentioned you'd be here. Two of the kids didn't show up - Sally Jensen and Robert Halls. As for the police, I haven't the foggiest idea. Come to think of it, I haven't seen the Reverend tonight either and he usually drops in to say hello to the group."

As soon as she hears the names Sally and Bobby, Anna makes a mental note to kick herself when she has the time to really mean it. That pretty much cinches it; if Bobby is a member of the abstinence group, it puts him in a prime position to choose his targets from within the circle. They probably trust him implicitly, too, especially in a small town like this with so few other kids their age.

At least she wouldn't need the police to protect her - she'd follow up on that later, but for now it would have to take lower priority. As long as she's here, she can make herself useful; a man was about to go to court for murder everyone had already decided he was guilty of. Even if she couldn't do anything more to stop Bobby or save Sally, she could get the evidence to ensure justice. And maybe - just maybe - she might get something that would help the others save Sally.

She briefly wondered where Reverend Garfunkle had gone - briefly remembering, with a vague unease, the way he had predicted her interview mere hours after she'd arrived in town - but pushes it out of her mind. This wasn't the time to chase shadows, not with a gold mine right in front of her.

"Thank you, Mrs. Granville. Sorry for being so brusque, but I know you see the, uh, anxiousness of the situation. I'm worried about Sally and Robert. Do you think I could talk to the group for a few minutes?" she asks, gesturing to the youth group.

Anna, Mrs. Granville hesitates for a moment at your request.

"Well, I can't see the harm in that. As long as you promise not to publish any of this discussion in your papers."

Assuming you agree with her request, she gestures for you to follow her back to the group of teenagers and introduces you.

"Everyone... this is Anna. She wants to talk with you about the recent murders."

Marcus and Vargas, Jill turns on the library lights as you enter the main doors. The library has a gothic-style architecture. Among the book stacks are all types of interesting pieces of art - sculptures, paintings, photographs, etc.

Here is the layout of the main floor:

""Is there any part of the library that's older, as in if the library has been expanded or renovated, perhaps part of the original structure?"

"Well" says Jill, "the building itself is very old. It was built in the late 1800's. It's actually the oldest building in town. And..." she whispers... "it was built by a Freemason."

She continues. "There are two floors and a basement, all of which are filled with books. Most of the contemporary and classics are on this main floor. There is a children's section upstairs. The basement has more of the older, less popular titles."

Moulder quickly searches the main floor and finds nothing.

Vargas

"Then let's split up and go look for some teenagers out past their bedtime."

"I'm heading downstairs" says Moulder.

Everyone please roll perception vs. 10 to hear a voice coming from the basement stairs. If you pass, you hear the voice but cannot decipher what is being said until you head down the stairs.

"I promise," says Anna, unconsciously placing a hand over her heart. "Thank you, Mrs. Granville."

Anna smiles wordlessly at the teenagers for a moment, silently wondering how to approach this. When she was their age, what would she have appreciated?

"Okay, I know you guys can take it, so I'm going to be frank. I'm worried about Bobby and Sally. I know all of the murders in the last six months have been in this group. They've been once a month, like clockwork, and the next is tonight. If they're not here, there might be something wrong. Have either of them been acting weird the last month, or last few months? If they're in trouble, anything you could tell me would help."

Vargus nods to Jill.

Perception (1d20=10)

Hearing voices, he nods, more to himself than anyone in particular, and follows Moulder.

Moulder's Perception Check: 1d20=5

Moulder doesn't hear the faint voice until he hits the top of the stairs.

"Marcus" he whispers. "We've got voices coming from the basement."

Moulder proceeds to un-holster his sidearm.

"I think I'll stay up here boys" says Jill.

"Call the police Jill" responds Moulder as he leads the way down into the basement.

Vargas and Marcus, the three of you quietly descend the stairs. It's pitch black in the basement and when Moulder hits the light switch nothing happens.

"Figures" says Moulder.

Here's what you see:

Moulder fishes a flashlight out of a pouch on his belt and snaps it on. It provides some additional illumination beyond that coming from the stairwell - it's not great, but it beats walking around in the dark.

The voice can now be clearly heard echoing throughout the library's basement. It's difficult to pinpoint where the voice is coming from.

"What is that, Latin?" asks Moulder.

Anyone have Language: Latin? If so, give me a skill check.

"I'll stay here to make sure they don't sneak out."

"Good call" says Moulder.

"Moon, stay close" he adds.

Marcus, the two of you edge forward into the darkness - guns drawn. The indecipherable Latin echoes through the room with little clue as to its origin. As you move away from the stairs, Moulder's flashlight provides enough illumination to see a stack of books to your right, a wall to your left.

The teenagers respond with alarm at your prediction.

"You think Bobby and Sally are going to be murdered?!" asks one of the girls. "Oh my god!"

Anna, the group starts to show signs of panic. A couple of the kids pull out cell phones and franticly type away with thumbs.

"Woah, calm down!" Anna says, and then does a very foolhardy thing: she continues to assume that these teenagers are as desperate to prove themselves as she had been at their age. "I'm telling you this because I thought you were mature enough to handle it. Don't prove me wrong. Bobby and Sally are probably fine, especially because they're together. I just want to make sure is all. Like you."

She turns to the closest kid who pulled out a cell phone. "If you've got phones, you want to call Bobby. Sally left her cell phone at the coffee shop downtow-"

Bobby's Text Message

"youth group canceled. headed to library. join me?"

Anna freezes up for a second, her memory suddenly kicking in. Was it significant? It already looked pretty definitive that Bobby was the killer and he was making things up to play Sally, but Anna suspected she wasn't given this job to find the obvious answers. It wasn't likely there was another twist to this mystery, but Anna had to know for sure.

"Guys! Girls! Bobby sent Sally a text saying the youth group was cancelled. Do you know anyone that might tell him that? One of his friends, you know, goofing off." She catches Mrs. Granville's eye and moves to pull her aside. "Put your heads together, okay? I'm going to go talk to Reverend Garfunkle for a second. Don't let me down." If there was another player in this game, the kids might be able to piece together the clues building up over the last six months. If not...it wasn't a big leap that Bobby might be the killer, but it would probably be best they came to the conclusion themselves. Then they could put together those clues building up over the last six months. Either way, she gets confirmation.

Before she heads up the stairs to track down the Reverend, Anna whispers something to Mrs. Granville too quietly for the others to hear. "Mrs. Granville, I'm so sorry for all the dramatics. I've got one question, though: how has Bobby's attendance been for the group the last six months?"

Anna, the kids settle down a bit after your efforts to calm them.
Anna

"Mrs. Granville, I'm so sorry for all the dramatics. I've got one question, though: how has Bobby's attendance been for the group the last six months?"

"Nothing out of the ordinary. He's missed a few meetings, if I remember correctly. But that happens with all the kids from time to time. We keep a roster for attendance. I could dig it up if you like."

Bingo. If the dates match up - and at this point, Anna very much doubts they won't - it would be best nail in Bobby's coffin they could get without catching him red-handed. And if they don't, she and the others would want to know.

"Could you?" Anna asks conspiratorially. "Thanks, Mrs. Granville. I'll be back in a minute."

Anna steals upstairs and - with a quick glance about the church (Perception : [1d20] + 3 = 10) just in case, say, Billy and Sally are in one of the pews praying and it really was Robertson the whole time - makes her way to the Reverend's office. Although his absence from the meeting probably wasn't significant (maybe he was on the phone with the police asking where the blue hell they were), Anna still wanted to touch base.

She knocks on the door.

Anna, Mrs. Granville nods and returns to the group. You head upstairs and make your way to the Reverend's office. Most of the lights in the nave are off with only a few around the perimeter of the church providing any light. When you arrive at the office door, it is closed.

Anna - as you look around the church you see absolutely nobody. I will assume that you first knock on the door and then try the knob.

You rap on the Reverend's door and get no response. Then you try the door and it opens. The room is dark and you get a strange chill upon stepping over the threshold.

What do you do?

****
Vargas and Marcus, after searching the basement you fail to find the source of the voice. However, you narrow it down to the north-west corner of the room behind a book case that appears to be up against the wall.

Marcus - what do you do?

Vargas - what are you doing?

If they have searched the room, Vargus relinquishes his guard position moving to investigate the noise himself.

Whispering, he looked the the other two in the party, "My deductive reasoning tell me it's either a fake wall of some kind or a speaker."

Vargus makes a quick check for any wires or electrical/mechanical systems on the wall.

Basic electronics 62% (1d100=79) FAIL
Basic Mechanics 82% (1d100=98) EPIC FAIL

He shakes his head, and whispered "I can't see anything in this light." He curses himself for not bringing a light.
