Vargas, the piano man looks at you with a startled look on his face as you rattle off you laundry list of questions.

Vargas - please make a charm/impress check (please pass it this time :P :ermm: ).

*****
Marcus, the librarian glances at you over her horn-rimmed glasses with a sly sort of look in her eye.

"Well sir. We don't generally give out that sort of information you know" she says. Then she leans in a little closer to you and whispers "perhaps if you made it worth my while, huh? Maybe diner tonight at the A&W?" She gives you a flirtatious wink and waits for your answer.

Charm/Impress (30%): 1d100=27, Pass!!

Marcus - strangely, you find the librarian's harmless extortion charming and cute. What say you?

Ellen stays quiet as she watches Marcus talk to the librarian since it's apparent that she prefers talking to him, as she looks around the library.

Ellen, as Marcus considers the librarian's proposition, your cell phone begins to ring. The ring tone (whatever it might be that you might have as your ringer) echoes throughout the cavernous vestibule. Heads that were previously buried in books turn towards the disruptive sound.

"Um excuse me miss" says the librarian. "You need to turn off your cell phone, now. Library rules." She points to a placard on the wall behind her.

Marcus thinks it over for a few seconds, not wanting to seem too eager, he turns and smiles at the woman. "It would be a pleasure to take a beautiful woman such as yourself out to dinner".

The librarian is all smiles at this point.

"Great!" She scratches some notes on a piece of scrap paper and hands it to you. On it is her address, telephone number, and her name 'Jill' with a heart shaped dot above the 'i'. "Why don't you pick me up around 7 tonight."

Then she gets serious. She leans in closer and whispers the following name: "Bobby Halls"

Marcus smiles he pulls out a piece of paper and writes down his name and cell number then hands it to her. "Thank you and I will see you again tonight". Marcus then walks over to Ellen. "I have a lead as to who may have been a participant in the murders".

Vargas, the piano man gives you a inquisitive look before answering your questions.

Quote:

"The girls that have been murdered recently all attend this church correct?"

"Yes officer" he says getting a bit choked up. "Those poor girls. And their families... their deaths have been a tragic loss for the church and the community as a whole. People are really scared. In fact, attendance here at the church has sky rocketed since the murders started. There's a lot of praying going on. I guess that's a silver lining."

Quote:

"Are they all in the choir?"

"Ah... no. No. Samantha and Tiffany were the only ones in the choir." Tears start to stream down the man's face as his thoughts turn to the girls.

Quote:

"How much of the town actually attend church regularly?"

He coughs and tries to regain his composure. "I'm not exactly sure. We could ask Reverend Garfunkle, but like I said, attendance has increased over the past few months."

Quote:

"Has anyone stopped attending church recently?"

"Not that I know of. In fact, just the opposite. We've seen some people coming to church that we haven't seen in years."

Quote:

"What is your name? What do you do here?"

"My name is Will Capstone. I'm the choir leader and musical coordinator here at the Church of Christ."

Before you can ask any follow up questions, Will motions for you to follow him. He leads you over to the memorial that you passed on your way through the church vestibule. Six candles burn brightly above six 5x7 inch photographs of six young women. You recognize Samantha Rae in one of the photos from the profile picture on the 'In Memory' Facebook page you saw earlier in your investigation. All of the girls look so happy and vibrant and you get an overwhelming sense that they had so much potential, so much life.

Even with your gruff demeanor, you get a little cut up at the thought.

The two of you stand in silence for a moment. Will starts talking again - something about the girls - but you barely hear him. It's almost as if he's whispering - his voice strangely dampened. It sounds as if you're wearing ear plugs or you're underwater. A strong, uncomfortable feeling washes over you and the hairs on your neck stand on end.

As you stare at the girls' photos you feel a bit of dizziness. The candle flames flicker violently and go out.

"What the..." exclaims the piano man. Your hearing is restored, the dizziness subsides.

Vargas - please roll a HF check vs. 5. If you pass, please provide a perception check and describe anything you might try to ascertain immediately following the flames going out.

Ellen winces as her phone starts ringing and immediately says to the librarian "Sorry about this." To Marcus, she says "I'll meet you outside." Ellen then heads toward the entrance of the library, answering the phone after first glancing at the call display "Hello?"

As Marcus comes over to her and mentions he has a potential lead, she smiles at him and points to her phone so he'll know she is still on a call.

Just so you know, as a genius, I have NO sensory perception towards the supernatural at all. It's kinda funny cuz a greater demon could be standing next to me , and if I didn't turn my head, I wouldn't know it was there.

Horror Factor (1d20=11)

Vargus immediately surveys his surroundings, Perception (1d20=18), and feels his ears for impairments. He also looks especially for a source of wind that would put out the candles. If nothing special if found, He would step up to the stand and inspect the pictures closely, picking them up and turning them over, as well as rooting around among whatever else is there.

Ellen, you look at the caller ID: "Chester Allen"

Quote:

"Hello?"

"Ellen! It's Chester. How is everything going? Are we making progress?"

Vargas, while Will the choir leader stands there in shock, you scan your surroundings. You notice a couple of things right away - the church door is closed, no windows are opened, there are no ear impairments, the only other person in the vestibule with you and Will is a young girl - presumably one of the choir members - on her way out of the building.

"What the heck was that?" asks Will. "Did you see that? Oh my God." Will quietly begins reciting a prayer though his words are imperceptible since he's mumbling them.

"No I can't say I did. Are you sure you're feeling well?"

Vargus instantly went through a list of creatures in his head that black smoke and loss of hearing would be associated with. At this point he doubted the piano player was involved, but was more suspicious of the church itself.

Vargas, you recall that stories abound of demonic manifestations often taking the form of amorphous clouds, columns, and walls of smoke. Caught between the physical and supernatural realms, demons often travel in this smoke form prior to inhabiting (i.e., possessing) human victims.

You also remember a 'smoke monster' on the television show 'Lost'.

Vargus checks the windows and looks for any normal cause of black smoke, like a fire. If he finds none, he turns back tot he piano player. "It seems the grief is playing tricks on you. Why don't you go home and get some rest? Thank you for your time."

Vargus walks out of the church. It was time for some research.

What time is it?

Vargas, the sun is setting in the western sky with the cumulus clouds reflecting the retreating star's energy in a brilliant red glow. A few people mill about on the street in front of the church.

As you look around, you notice your partners Ellen and Marcus standing in front of the library about a half a block down main street.

Ellen - Chester is waiting for your sitrep.

Marcus - you've got about 30 minutes before you're due to pick up the librarian for your date.

Vargas - what are you doing?

Marking Marcus' reaction, Vinny talks to Ellen instead.

"I'll assume that's a bitter no. I didn't find anything of value yet. Want to find something to eat?"

Ellen smiles at Vinny and holds up a hand in a polite 'Give me a minute' gesture, showing that she is on the phone. She says to Chester, "We're trying to dig up leads. Marcus is following up on one now." Ellen pauses before asking "I noticed you weren't able to meet the rest of the team. Will you still be joining us on Sunday?"

"Will you still be joining us on Sunday?"

"I'm afraid not Ellen. Something important has come up here in Minnesota. I'm not going to be able to get away so for the moment you're on your own. Do you have any leads at all? Pantano is concerned about Robertson's safety."

"Oh, I see." Ellen's voice doesn't hide that she is not happy to hear this. "I'm doing the best I can, but we've lost most of the team. No, nothing has happened to them." 'Until I get my hands on them' she thinks to herself, saying to Chester "But they seem to have quit because I haven't heard from them since my arrival here. Marcus and Vargus are the only ones here besides me. As I said, Marcus is following up on a lead."
