Marcus looks over Jill's shoulder and sees the crowd heading for the jail. "We have a problem. I suggest calling the state police and locking the doors". Marcus walks over to Vargas. "We have a problem and the local police may require our assistance". Marcus walks out to his truck and gets his pistol, tucking it into his shoulder holster before heading over to the jail. |

Anna bursts out of the city hall building's doors before the newsletter hits the counter. With only the briefest glance both ways before crossing the street, she withdraws her notebook and a black pen. She draws up behind the gathering crowd, pen to paper, trying to catch everything said both by and to the lynch mob. |

If Vargus notices the mob, he curses under his breath. "I hate humans." He thought momentarily, then grinned. He pulled out his cell phone, inputing the number of the suspects lawyer's cell phone. When she(i think it's a she) picks up, or her voice mail, Vargus informs her of he situation, "I hope you have his funeral papers drawn up, because the townspeople have their killing shoes on." Click. Vargus then checks on the internet, through his cell phone when the next full moon is. Computer Operations 102% (1d100=53) Pass Edited by Arthotus, Sep 15 2010, 08:50 AM.

Vargas, you definitely noticed the mob since Marcus informed you about it. Your call to Pantano (Mr. Pantano) is short an sweet, but the warning is appreciated. When you check the lunar cycle, you are surprised to see that the moon will be at its fullest tonight. You pocket your cell phone and hustle to catch up with Marcus at the truck. Vargas - please provide a perception roll with your next post. Marcus, Jill gets on the phone as instructed and makes a call to the state police as you head out to your truck. You holster your pistol. "Hold on there cowboy" says a voice behind you. When you and Vargas turn around, you see the FBI agent - Moulder - taking the last pull off a cigarette and dropping it to the ground. He puts the cigarette out with the heel of his shoe. "Don't escalate this thing. They'll disperse. I've seen it before" he says. Anna, without hardly thinking, you begin to scratch notes in short-hand on your pad of paper. You hear people in the crowd say things like: "He's a monster!" "We'll put him down if you won't do it!" Various additional threats are thrown about by the rather ordinary looking townsfolk gathered (there are about 20 people total). A group of women huddle together, tears streaming down there faces while the men take a more aggressive stance. One man in particular seems to be the de facto leader of the mob. He challenges the obviously uncomfortable police officer standing before them. You see additional officers in the windows of the jail watching the scene like hawks. "You let us have 'em Bill, and we'll make sure justice is served" says the disgruntled man. "Now you know that ain't gonna happen Sam. What you're talking 'bout is murder and I can't let that happen. Go home. Let the courts take it from here" says the officer. "We can finish this thing here and now Bill. That man's a f**king monster. For god's sake Bill, he killed my girl. He killed six of 'em." The officer holds firm as Sam presses him. He was a member of this town too and the murders had affected him as much as anyone. But he was the law and he'd sworn an oath to uphold it. "You listen here" he shouts out over the mob. "Y'all head on home and leave this matter to the law. There ain't gonna be no mob justice here today. Not under my watch." |

Perception (1d20=19)(do i see it?) Vargus grins at a sudden evil idea. He walks over near the mob. "Welcome One and ALL!!!" He shouts in his loudest voice. "It is a pleasure to have you all turn out for the second Dodranscentennial beat down of a murdering scumbag! So how will we Beat the man to death this time? Cudgels? Farm tools? Or will we go Over the top this time and simply punch him until his mother won't recognize him when he reaches the other side?" He Doesn't stop talking even if anyone objects or responds, and continues to shout at the top of his lungs. Intimidate 60%(to get them to shut up) (1d100=59) "We obviously can't let this man get off scott free for getting found at a crime scene! We need to kill him or I can guarantee you another one of your pretty little virgin daughters will die tonight! He's obviously going to break free of the police and roam once more if we don't kill him tonight! Come now, all at once now, We'll never overwhelm these humble and polite civil servents if you don't try all at once! The turn out really is horrible THIS time around huh? Come now Charge your neighbors who just happened to be police on Three!" he cried holding up three fingers. "One! You don't seem angry enough! TWO! REmember to drag the murderer into the street before you bludgeon him to death so that everyone can get a crack! AND!!! THREE!" He shoos the crowd towards the cops. (If they actually became excited and charged he throws his hands up in the air and walks away. If they are ashamed and remain where they are like he expects he gives them a quizical look that says, "Why aren't you killing someone yet?") Edited by Arthotus, Sep 15 2010, 06:09 PM.

Anna's pencil hesitates for a second at the onset of Vargus's speech, glancing over to recognize the blond man. Oh, good, Mr. Charisma. She turns back to the "Sam" as the blond man's satire continues, tuning in and out for the occasional word and glance at his contemptuous gesticulations. My job just got a lot harder, she thinks to herself. Where's Marcus? That man knows how to show contempt with style. Vargus's mass shaming was admirable, but probably unnecessary. Anna couldn't see this dozen-strong mob stampeding over their neighbours to hang Robertson from the tallest tree. She just hoped Vargus's performance wasn't making turning the town against him, and any other outsiders. Anna carefully studies "Sam's" face and build, hoping she could pick him out for interview later. He seemed angry and vocal, and probably wouldn't take much to get talking. |

Vargas, as you embark on your well-meaning attempt to shame the mob into disbanding, you recognize the apparent leader of the group as Mr. Samuel Rae - the disgruntled man you'd interviewed earlier.
But before you are able to escalate the riot (or not), you feel the shock of electricity surge through your body as the police officer behind you hits you with his taser gun. You immediately drop to the ground and as the pain washes away, a series of uncontrollable spasms shake your body. The townsfolk gasp as you are picked up by two police officers and dragged into the building. "Now" you the officer say to the crowd. "Who's next?" The officers set you down on a bunk in one of the jail cells and lock you up. Vargas - you'll be unable to do much of anything for the next couple of minutes.
"Oh boy" responds Moulder. You watch as Vargas gets zapped by the policeman and dragged inside the jail. To your surprise, the townsfolk are left sufficiently intimidated by the officer's response to Vargas' outburst and they start to disperse. Marcus - what do you do? Anna, you also see the whole thing go down. Anna - what do you do? |

Anna waits as long as necessary to make sure that the cops aren't keeping an eye on the out-of-towner, then follows Sam. Matching her speed to his, she gives him a couple of minutes to digest his defeat before pulling up beside him. "You can't drag him out and hang him from the highest tree," she starts, taking a sympathetic tone. (Invoke Trust/Intimidate 96% - [1d100] = 14 Pass!) "but if he's found guilty, he could get the needle. They're going to take him to a big city to try him, though. All they'll have seen are the papers, and those give him a reasonable doubt. Unless something gets printed with real information in it, he's going to get off. Walk with me." |

Vargus wasn't at all surprised by the taser. The only thing that surpised him was that they didn't do it sooner. As the volts coursed through his major muscle groups the only thing Vargus really thought was, "I hope this doesn't break any or my ribs." The officers were even nice enough to drag him inside. He hadn't expected that. Vargus was hoping SOMEONE would have picked up on his pretty blatant clues. "Probably just thought I was making stuff up, he grumbled to himself." After his muscles realized they were controlled by his brain again, Vargus rolled off the bunk and called to the nearest cop. "I have some information you guys should know if you don't already." |

Marcus watches as Vargas is taken inside. He turns to Moulder. "I have some information that you may find interesting. A few months ago, there was a book in the public library that dealt heavily in the occult, ways to become a wizard or some such thing. Anyway it was checked out almost a year ago and never returned. I have a name and an address if you would like to come along". |

Anna, you approach a smaller group that has fractured off from the mob. At the center of the group is the man you've identified as the de facto leader (Samuel Rae). As you join the group, their hushed conversation ends abruptly. There is an uncomfortable silence as you offer your thoughts. "What? Are you a reporter or something?" asks Rae. But he doesn't wait for you to respond. "That monster doesn't deserve such an easy out. If you'd seen what he done to those girls, you'd understand." Then he adds, "You can quote me on that." Vargas, the officers are visibly agitated by your display of threatening behavior. "Oh yeah buddy? What kind of information do you have for us?" Marcus, Moulder gives you a raised eyebrow. "Yeah. I'll drive." The two of you jump in his rig and pull out of the parking space. "Where are we headed and how do you think this is connected to the murders?" Assuming you give him the low down, he makes a call to the Bureau for a background check on Bobby Halls. "Well, he's a minor. 17 years old. No previous record. Let's tread lightly." You pull up in front of the Halls residence. Edited by dhorn, Sep 17 2010, 09:43 AM.

Vargus is indifferent to their annoyance. "If you hadn't already been informed, this has happened once before. 1930's. 13 girls were killed then, and only 7 have been found now. Each girl was and has been killed on a full moon. It just so happens that there is another full moon tonight. If our perp wants to keep his schedule, he'll kill again tonight. I'm warning you now so that you can begin the release papers for the other man. I do detest paper work, but alas, good bookkeeping makes the world go round." |

Anna inwardly kicks herself for approaching the group, rather than getting Sam alone as she had planned. In a group like this, it was easier for their mob mentality to block out logic. On the other hand... she thinks. Odds are, at least one of these folks is likely to listen. "Well, if you'd rather sit back and feel sorry for yourselves, feel free. With some actual evidence, you could get him convicted - but if that's not good enough for you, by all means just sit back and brood. Then he can get off scot free, and do the same thing to someone else's daughter, if that's what you want." |

Marcus, Moulder gives you a stern look and hops out of the car. The two of you approach the house and Moulder knocks on the door. No answer. Moulder cups his hands around his eyes and tries to peer through the small window on the front door. "Doesn't look like anyone is home." Marcus - suggestions? Anna, the man looks at you. "You know this guy has served time for sexual assault? Yeah. And then he gets out of jail on good behavior and comes here and starts killing young girls. A conviction ain't gonna satisfy me darlin'." Anna - what do you do? Vargas, the officers listen intently to your story. "Yeah Butch" says one of the officers. "I remember hearing about those murders. Some crazy old man killed them girls... at least that's how the story goes." "It's not just a story" says another officer. "Here, look" he says pointing to the screen of his computer. The three officers huddle around the computer while you sit in the cell. They talk amongst themselves but you can't quite make out what they're saying. Vargas - whatcha gonna do? |

Law 64%: [1d100] = 100 Fail! "You think he's going to get time off for good behaviour after this?" Anna asks incredulously. "He has six counts of first degree murder against him and a history of cruelty to boot. If he's convicted, he'll get the needle. Even if by some prayer he gets out of the death sentence, he'll get a jail term for longer than I'll be alive. He'll never live life as a free man again. "But this - " Anna gestures to the crowd and in the general direction of the police station, " - this isn't doing it. And all the information I'm seeing come out of here isn't enough for a conviction either. You can scream for blood and 'if you were here you'd understand' if you want, but the case is going to be dismissed for lack of evidence and he's. Gonna. Walk. Away. Hell, I'm from a small town too. You know what the rest of the world thinks of us? They're going to look at this and see a man who tried to put his life back together after a mistake thirty years ago, but then some paranoid rednecks fingered him for murders and tried to lynch him in broad daylight. That's what they'll see! You! Need! Proof!" Anna makes an exasperated gesture. "I have a talent for finding the truth. But if you'd rather turn him into a martyr, you're welcome to plan Robertson's murder at church tomorrow." Edited by Snikers, Sep 28 2010, 10:53 AM.

Anna, it's painfully obvious that you're getting nowhere with the mob. Anger and vengeance apparently trump reason. Thanks for reminding me about the Identify Wards/Runes/Circles roll. Anna - you recognized that the pentagram was contained within a circle - a casting circle or magic circle as they're often called. While the craft of these circles is varied and often specific to the purpose or school of magic practice it comes from, they have similarities across disciplines. Traditionally, circles have been used by ritual magicians to form a protective barrier between themselves and what they summoned. Circles often have the more benign function of containing and concentrating the energy raised during a ritual. Basically, you know that it is a magic circle. Its purpose is only speculative at this point. Marcus, Moulder follows your lead - but heads around the opposite side of the house from you. You peek through the windows and it looks like nobody is home. Other than the front door and windows, there is a side door to the garage. Marcus - please roll perception. Marcus, as you poke around the side door, you see a planter with a couple of frozen and dead geraniums, a couple of garbage cans, and a garden gnome statue next to the door. A garden hose sits coiled and frozen in the crusty snow. There is a well worn footpath in the snow up to the side door. It also looks like the gnome was been moved slightly from its original position based on your keen observation of the marks in the snow. |

Vargus shakes his head. "Does no one in this town understand SARCASM. Another girl is going to DIE tonight. She almost definitely goes to the local church regularly. If the copycat is thorough, the girl will also be in her teens and a virgin. GO BE POLICE OFFICERS!" (By the way what did I see with that perception before I made the big speach?" |
