Anna sighs inwardly. "So it's okay so long as it's someone else's daughter?" she asks the crowd before it can disappear, but gets no meaningful response. "If you come to your senses, I'll be around." She turns a corner and withdraws her notebook, turning to the back and her paperclipped articles. City Hall was a bust, she thinks, but I've still got plan B. She checks the dates of her clippings, determining when the last victim died. A town this size couldn't have more than one graveyard, and if she could get a name, she'd have a lead to follow. I sure hope this doesn't lead me back to Sam, she thinks. Edited by Snikers, Sep 30 2010, 07:33 AM.

Vargas, the officers feign indifference to your sarcasm as they go about their business. About thirty minutes go by when two officers approach the cell and unlock the door. "Come with us please Mr. Vargas." The officers lead you to a small, windowless room. Inside the room are two chairs on either side of a table. There is a clock mounted on the wall. It's 9:30 am. "Have a seat" says one of the men. They leave the room. As the door closes, you hear the lock click. You watch the clock as seconds... and then minutes tick by. Finally, after about fifteen minutes, a man enters the room. "Mr. Vargas, my name is Lieutenant Reynolds. I'd like to ask you a few questions." He takes a seat across from you and sets your wallet (and other effects) on the table. "I'm sure you're aware that inciting a riot is illegal in Nebraska, Mr. Vargas. I don't know what you hoped to accomplish with your little outburst, but right now I'm more interested in what you were telling my men about a possible copycat killer. If you're willing to answer a few questions, we might be able to work something out with the charges that could be brought against you for your behavior this morning. So, if you will Mr. Vargas... start from the beginning and spare no detail." Vargas - I will assume you basically share the same info with Lieutenant Reynolds as you did with the officers. "Ok. So what makes you think that there is another murderer? We've got material evidence that should put Robertson away for a long time. Also, what's the connection to the local church?" ***** Anna, you look at your newspaper clippings and see that the last murder occurred exactly one month previous. Anna - what's the plan? Vargus would repeat what he said to the other officers. After the new questions he chuckled. "If you review my statements, My speech was designed to guilt the mob into disbanding. Perhaps I was a fraction on the spirited side, but I stand by my actions." Taking a breath his face grew serious and he leaned in. "I am here with a group to prove that the suspect you have in custody WASN'T the one 'who done it'. Despite that, my only concern is to find and destroy supernatural creatures. Believe in them or not, the first step is to make sure there IS a supernatural presence before I start arming myself like my movie counterparts. In this case I believe the suspect is in fact human, but I don't think it's the human you have in custody." He leaned back, relaxing the tension a little. "Actually, the information I have gotten was disgustingly easy to dig up. Your police officers were just looking in the wrong places, if they were looking at all. The victim profiles all match in 3 distinct ways. One: They are all young girls. Two: They are all either virgins or expected to be virgins. Three: They have ALL so far gone to the local church. I'm not an expert in crime solving by any means, but My bet is that the freak doing these murders dug up the same info I did about the killings in the thirties. He's either just copycatting the murders for fun, or he believes the same the last suspect did. That a demon would grant him some wish if he did these things. Whether you believe in this demon or NOT, the suspect probably does, and it's why he's keeping such a stringent schedule of killing on every full moon. The previous killer admitted to the killing right away. Your suspect has not, which is why I don't think it's him." His speech finally done he looked around. "Plus I like rooting for the underdog. Got any water? Those tasers just SUCK the moister out of you." |

A month? Anna's face drops, disappointed. By this time, the grass would have grown over the grave, the funeral would have ended, and the most memorials would have come and gone. What was left? High school. The victim was definitely a minor. They could have been small children, but given the lack of professionalism she'd seen in the newspaper articles, it was unlikely they would have held back that sensationalist tidbit. She was probably looking at a teenaged victim. Anna checked her map for the town's high school. There was something else, too.
It had sounded like scare tactics, but there was something to his tone. The mention of virginity was odd. The terms "pretty" and "tonight" were comparatively innocuous, but the aforemtioned virginal reference threw them into suspicion by association. So what do those mean? she ponders to herself, busying herself on the walk. Virginity, of course, took on a special significance given the rituatlistic symbols. Virgin sacrifices, she thinks. Not just the stuff of 70s horror classics, the belief in virgin purity had been held for a long time through human history. Hell, even today there's people who think sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. That explains their young age, too, thinks Anna glumly. Children were often used as such AIDS cures, because one could usually guarantee that virginity. Prettiness may not be a factor, but if it was, it was probably piggybacking on the virginity factor. Ancient and terrible evils to which mankind are ants, if petty enough to demand the blood of an "innocent", would probably be persnickety enough to demand their sacrifice be beautiful as well. Or, Vargus might have thrown it in to get the townspeople riled up. Tonight. Was Vargus just trying to force a sense of immediacy on the mob? Or was that a real guarantee? Anna thinks back to the dates of the murders. Is there a pattern? She was going to feel like an idiot if the deaths were once a month - or, similarly - once a lunar cycle - and she hadn't noticed. Anna stops suddenly. How did he know she was a virgin? It might have been an assumption...no. Whatever else he was, Vargus certainly wasn't that naive. So where did he learn it? And what led him to apply it to all of the victims? It probably wasn't interviews; he didn't seem tactful enough to ask that question without earning at least one blow to the jaw. He might have analyzed them somehow; read their diaries or their blogs. Anna wishes she could ask Vargus this question, but emailing him is probably going to be fruitless for a while. What keeps a young woman virginal? she muses. A fear of being found out in a small town, maybe. Staying out of relationships, maybe (it had worked for Anna, after all). Personal beliefs? Religion? Of course. What if all the victims were in some sort of group chastity pledge? That would explain how Vargus found out about it. And where could she find that information? The high school she was going to could do it, maybe. She'd check there for flowers, wreaths - anything about the deaths that wouldn't require her to get past the weekend-locked doors. Next, the church - there might be more of the same. If she could get a name, it would be time for internet research. Summary: Anna analyzes the dates of the murders for a pattern. She then goes to the high school to look for clues, then the local church, then the library for internet access. |

Marcus, the path leads from the door to the driveway. There is another path, a fresh path into a small wooded area. Something nags at you... that damn red-hatted garden gnome... Agent Moulder is still out of view. He must be on the other side of the house still. What do you do? Vargas, Lieutenant Reynolds listens to your story... and then you start talking about the demons and he stops you. "Demons? Supernatural? You expect me to believe that you and your colleagues are monster hunters? You'll have to pardon my skepticism Mr. Janova."
"Sure. I'll be right back." Reynolds leaves the room and returns a minute later with a glass of water. "Listen Mr. Janova, you've provided us with some interesting information. My men are busy verifying it right now. I don't want to hold you. Quite honestly, we've got our hands full with this whole Robertson thing. We're just trying to keep him alive long enough to transfer him to the county boys. Here's a proposition for you... I let you walk. You continue your investigation... without inciting any more riots..." he lifts an eyebrow at you. He hands you his business card. "If you find anything solid, you call me right away. Alright?" Vargas - what do you say to the proposal? Anna, you consider the dates of the murders and quickly realize that they have taken place at monthly intervals. You consider heading to the high school, but it's Saturday and that may not be too fruitful. You mull it over as you decide what to do next. Anna - high school? Church? Library? Other? What do you do next? |

Anna maps out her plan in her head. First, to the high school. As she'd pessimistically noted before, the doors would be locked, but a quick walk around the perimeter would reveal any posters, wreaths, or even 8.5"x11" declarations taped to telephone poles. If there was anyone there to talk to, great, if not, oh well. Next would be to stop in at the church, see if there was anything there about the girls. Maybe interview someone, if they're there and look willing to talk. Perhaps there would be some sort of bulletin or newsletter there, as well. Next, an internet connection. If there was an internet cafe or something similar anywhere in town, she'd use that; otherwise, she'd have to use the library and hope there's no restrictions on the computer use. These were (probably) teenagers; if she had a name, she could probably find a blog or a personal page. If not, she'd have to look for anything related to the Tilden murders. For an experienced researcher like herself, the difference between the options was little more than time. |

Vargus grins, "If it turns out to be something you don't want to see, I and my colluges will take care of it. If it's a human, I'll hand it to you personally and You can take the credit. I can live with that. Vargus down the water in one gulp. Getting up he grabs the card and goes to leave, but stops at the door, "Seriously though, I'm almost positive another girl is going to die tonight. This could be the BEST time to catch whatever is doing the killing. Do you know anyone else who fits the victim profile I gave you?"

Anna, you head to the high school and find little by way of clues. There is no one around. You arrive at the church (The Pentecostal Church of Christ) and find it quiet. When you enter through the heavy main doors, there are a couple of townsfolk sitting in pews. A man bustles about near the altar, it's obvious that he's the reverend. Anna - what do you do?
"Well, I know that the church has an abstinence program" replies Reynolds. "But it sounds like you've already run down that lead. You might be able to get a list from Reverend Garfunkle." Vargas - as Reynolds walks you to the door, what do you do? |

Anna takes a moment to scan the innards of the church for anything that could help her investigation. Newsletters or memorials would be best, but she'd also check for any bulletin boards or postings. Youth groups, prayer clubs, chastity pledges - something that may involve the slain teens. After that, she delicately makes her way to the front of the church and introduces herself to the pastor. "Sir?" she asks quietly, careful not to disturb the other churchgoers. "My name is Anna Li, I'm a journalist trying to make sense of the recent murders. Do you mind if I ask you some questions?" |

Anna, you notice a rack of candles to your left. Under the candles are the photos of six young girls. There is a bulletin board to the right. There is a calendar with church events. There is quite a bit of Easter propaganda, what with it right around the corner and all. There is a choir and an abstinence group sanctioned by the church. There are a few community outreach groups such as a counseling group for spouses of military personnel overseas, food drive, etc.
The old man turns to greet you. "Of course young lady, my name is Reverend Garfunkle. I was expecting you. Please have a seat and I'll be with you in a moment." The Reverend hurries about the altar making the final preparations for the evenings services. While you're waiting there, you hear the doors open behind you. When you turn to see who came in, you see Vargas. Vargas, you walk into the church and notice that the young asian-american woman is sitting in the front pew. A man, who you could assume is Reverend Garfunkle, seems to be preparing the altar. Anna and Vargas - the Reverend will get to you shortly. In the meantime... Marcus, you see that the gnome has been moved since the last snowfall. In fact, upon closer examination you see that it has been tipped to the side. Marcus - do you tip the gnome? |

Before advancing further into the church, Anna takes a moment to look over the choir and abstinence postings. While names would be the most immediately useful to her investigation, she also checks for the times and locations of meetings, and tries to eyeball the sizes of each group. If the flyers are recent enough to mention any deaths within their resepctive patronages, so much the better. She also notes the candles-and-photos setup, but doesn't check it out yet. If she's lucky, she'd be looking at it in a moment with the pastor himself.
Anna suppresses the urge to arch an eyebrow in surprise. She knew she'd attract attention, but she'd literally been in town for mere hours. Either someone had told the reverend about her - unlikely - or he'd seen her in town, recognized her as a non-local, and correctly assumed she'd try to interview him. Lucky, she thinks. Whether gifted with extraordinary connection or perception, this was obviously a man aware of his surroundings and a gold mine for information. Sitting at the pew, she hears the doors open and glances back at Vargas's entrance. This time, she does raise an eyebrow. She'd figured the cops would have given him a few hours of time-out, but she supposes they have bigger things to worry about. Given her surroundings, she considers a heartfelt prayer ("Please God, don't let him make a scene. Amen.") but instead turns back to face the pulpit. |

Vargus notices the reporter and her surprised expresion. He grins inwardly, making a small jail break joke to himself. He really should have asked about the abstenence group. Now that he knew, The suspect was almost certainly someone either from the group or related to it somehow. There wasn't many teenage virgins around nowadays anyway. Walking over, he stood by the reporter. "I'll just let the proffesional do the questioning. Don't mind me." He informed her non-chalantly. |

Marcus, you tip the gnome. There is no booby trap, only a key. Marcus - it's a single key and could fit the lock on the garage door. Agent Moulder is still nowhere to be found. He must still be investigating the other side of the house. Vargas, you take a seat next to Anna and wait for the Reverend. Anna, you notice that the posted calendar has the next abstinence group meeting on Sunday after the youth group meeting. There are no names. Anna and Vargas - the Reverend is busy finishing up his preparations. He'll be with you momentarily. This is an opportunity for a brief conversation if you so choose. |

Marcus - Moulder gives you a raised eyebrow. "Well, without a warrant anything we turn up would be inadmissible in court. And getting a warrant wouldn't be easy. An overdue library book doesn't necessarily equate to probable cause. Let me make a call." Moulder whips out his cell phone, dials a number, and puts the phone to his ear. He walks down the drive way towards the vehicle. This leaves you standing at the garage door waiting. Marcus - what do you do? Anna and Vargas, the Reverend finishes his work and approaches you. "Thank you for waiting. Please, follow me. We can have some privacy in my office" he says. The three of you make your way around the left side of the altar and through a door into a wide hallway. Reverend Garfunkle ushers you through a second door into a sunlit office decorated with various religious artifacts. Everyone sits. "I am aware of your investigation. How can I be of assistance?"
