Anna hmms to herself. "Mrs. Granville...I'll have to talk with her later, as well.

"How have the other girls been responding to the murders? I mean, beyond what everyone else feels - if I were in their place, I'd be very worried for my safety. The odds of all of the victims being in the same two groups is too much to be a coincidence, isn't it? I don't want to be preumptious of course - but you might want to suspend the choir and other groups they were involved in, at least until we can be sure that Mr. Robertson is the culprit and that he's no longer capable of doing harm.

"Incidentally, we may have that proof soon - have you noticed that the murders have occurred on very regular, monthly basis? The next one will have been tonight. Interrupting the cycle will probably help everyone here sleep a little more soundly, don't you think?"

Anna leans forward, carefully appraising Garfunkle's reaction to this revelation. (Perception : [1d20] + 3 = 6

Vargas, Capstone appears nervous as he contemplates your questions. He taps his fingers on the desk.

"Yes. I've seen the smoke before. Once before. It was just before Samantha Rae was killed. I mentioned it to the police, but they disregarded it as non-sensical. I kind of agreed with them but when I saw that smoke again yesterday..." he looks up from his hands to your eyes. "I think it's more than delusional coincidence."

"What do I think it is? A warning? A sign? An omen? I don't know. What do you think it might be?"

Vargas - you can sense real fear in Will's voice... you can see it in his eyes.

*****
Anna, the Reverend nods as you put the pieces together.

"The abstinence support group meets this afternoon. I will call Mrs. Granville and ask her to cancel the meeting. Yes.." he says mostly to himself as he reaches for the phone.

Anna - the Reverend appears to be 100% behind what you are saying, the logic of your suggestion influencing his decision.

*****
Marcus, you set the grocery bag on the kitchen counter and watch as Moulder helps by unpacking the groceries. Mrs. Halls quickly puts away the perishable items, chatting with Agent Moulder as you scan the kitchen.

"So what kind of library book could be so important to a murder investigation?" she asks.

"Well ma'am, it's a book on the occult. Witchcraft and such. Do you know if your son had a more than casual interest in the topic?"

Marcus - provide a perception roll please.

Vargus makes a quick decision on what to tell the man.

"I don't know. It could just be that you've cracked under the strain of the recent murders. I'm here to prove that false. Where and when exactly did you last see the smoke?"

"Just a second," Anna says quietly as Reverend Garfunkle reaches for the phone, her words quickly picking up speed. "Let me get down to the brass tacks, Reverend. All of the victims were part of the choir, all of them were part of the abstinence groups, all of them came from very pious families. The murderer would have to have known about that connection, and from what you've told me, Robertson is one of the only men in town that wouldn't."

She leans in close, her voice low. "Have you noticed, or have Granville or Capstone reported, anyone hanging around the group meetings? Anyone acting suspicious or taking an unusual interest? And were the girls part of any other groups that the murderer might be focused on? I don't want to pry, but - this might be something to take to the police."

Vargas, Capstone considers your question.

"I remember seeing the smoke shortly before Samantha Rae went missing. I was outside the church. It was at the end of the day. I was headed to my car. I guess that was about 3 months ago. Of course, her body was found a few days later. I did not feel the kind of sickening reaction to it as I did yesterday in the church vestibule."

*****
Marcus, you notice a picture of Mrs. Halls, her husband, and a teenage boy on the refrigerator. In fact, there are photos all over the house.

"Ok. That's it" says Mrs. Halls as the last of the groceries are put away.

Just then, Agent Moulder's cell phone rings.

"Excuse me for a minute" he says as he walks into the dining room.

"Well, Mr. Thorn. If you'll follow me, I'll show you to Bobby's room."

*****
Anna, Reverend Garfunkle exhales heavily.

"I believe your assessment to be correct. I can say with certainty that neither William Capstone not Patricia Granville reported anyone or anything strange to me. In terms of other groups, I am uncertain of their involvement at the highschool. That might be something to follow up on. Though I am worried now that something horrible could happen tonight based on the pattern you've detected in the murders."

The Reverend looks at his watch.

"It's 1 o'clock right now. The group meets at 5. Hmmm. Perhaps it would be good to have the children here, in one place. I just don't know. I should call the police. Oh my..."

Anna - the Reverend is obviously upset and unable to make a decision.

Vargus' brow furrows in thought a moment. This could be troubling. "Was there anyone else there, who might also have seen the smoke?"

Vargus also tries to think back and remember if anyone had been in the church besides himself and Capstone. He didn't actually want to confirm the sighting. Maybe, just maybe, if the smoke happened to be the physcial manifestation of the demon, perhaps it was following the person who was feeding it virgins. All speculation fo course, but this investigation wasn't exactly giving any hard evidence, even by the lax standards of paranormal activity.

"May I make a suggestion?" Anna asks evenly, hands folded in her lap.

"Cancelling the meeting now is probably too late. Anyone who is targeting the girls based on their involvement has had at least six months to study them. However, they may not know they are being targeted. Having them here may be an opportunity to see anyone that has been paying undue attention to them. If it is based on the abstinence group, as opposed to the choir or anything else, they may make an appearance to study their next victim - it's the night before their next scheduled attack, after all.

"Also, as you said, it may be convenient to have all the girls in one place. It would give an opportunity for the police to interview everybody at once - maybe let everyone put their heads together. I know they'd usually do it in the comfort of their own homes, or at the station, but...time's a factor. The next murder's scheduled for tonight."

She checks her watch, mirroring Garfunkle's movement a few seconds earlier. "I can be here at five, if you want. Whoever's doing this may try to make sure they're not spotted, but I'd be a new element. They wouldn't expect me."

Marcus follows the woman and looks around as he follows her. His short time spent as a beat cop still ingrained in him. "We aren't trying to say that your son may be the killer ma'am, just that whoever else saw the book may know something that may lead to the real killer".

Vargas, Capstone just shakes his head.

"I... I don't remember" he answers.

Vargas - roll a memory check: 1d20 with a bonus equal to your IQ/10 (round down). Beat an 8 to remember the details of your encounter with the black smoke.

Anna, the Reverend agrees with you and the plan is set in motion.

Anna - unless you have additional questions or discussion topics with the Reverend, you may leave his office and go about your business.

Marcus, Mrs. Halls stops in the hallway and turns towards you.

"Well that is a relief detective" she says.

She continues down the hall and opens a door to Bobby's room.

The room is typical for a boy of Bobby's age. It's messy - clothes and books are strewn across the floor. A closet door stands part way open in the corner. Posters of sports stars and scantily clad women adorn the walls. In another corner is a computer. A single window looks out into the backyard.

Marcus - please roll perception and state your next action.

"Thank you, sir," says Anna, standing. "Uh, just one more thing...I saw the memorial coming in, with the candles and the photographs? I was wondering if you could just step outside with me and point out which of the girls was which. It would help me, if I could put a face to the names."

Anna, the Reverend stands.

"Of course" he says as he leads you out of the office. You enter the vestibule and stop in front of the memorial. Six candles burn brightly above six 5x7 inch photographs of six young women. All of the girls look so happy and vibrant and you get an overwhelming sense that they had so much potential, so much life.

The Reverend points to each photograph and rattles off the names of the six young girls.

Vargas, you recall another person... a young girl... being in the vestibule when Will freaked out. You also recall the strange, uncomfortable feeling you experienced at the same time that Will supposedly saw the black smoke.

Marcus, you see a bunch of drawings stuffed under a few school books on Bobby's desk. Further examination reveals that they are drawings of strange occult symbols.

Marcus - roll Lore:Magic or some similar skill check, if you have it. If not, you know that these symbols are suspect.

You scan the bookshelf but do not see the book you're looking for.

Marcus - you've found some important information. Do you continue to search the room, and if so, where?

Vargus' brow furrows. He hadn't even considered it would be a young girl doing the killings, but it did make sense...unless. "Sir." Vargus says now completely focused on Will. "When you and I talked last, there was a girl in the church. Who was she and how can I contact her?"

Vargas, Will contemplates for a minute as he tries to remember.

"Yes. Yes. Just before you and I began talking, I was finishing up with choir practice. Sally Jensen, who helps me coordinate the choir had stayed behind to help put away the equipment. Yes. It would have been Sally Jensen. I remember now."

Will looks at you concerned.

"Do you think she is in danger?"

Marcus, you look under the mattress and find... THE BOOK!

"What's that?" asks Mrs. Halls.

Just then Moulder re-enters the scene.

"Well, what did you come up with Thorn?"

Marcus holds up the book and the notes that were on the desk. "I found the book Moulder. As well as what look to be doodles that he did of some stuff that may have come from the book on school papers".

(Marcus was wearing gloves while conducting the search.. S.O.P. and all that jazz)

Moulder snaps on a pair of latex gloves and begins to look around the room for additional evidence.

"Wha... what does this mean?" asks Mrs. Halls. "Oh my god, oh my god" she sputters as she begins to panic.

"Mrs. Halls, please calm down" says Moulder as he redirects his attention to the distraught woman. "This book is merely one piece of the puzzle. This doesn't prove anything about your son's possible involvement."

Mrs. Halls, rather than being reassured by Moulder's words, breaks down.

"You've got to leave. I want you out of my house!" she cries.

Moulder tries to reason with her but she only deteriorates further.

"I think that's our cue" he says to you.

"I can't say for certain, but I think it would be wise if we went to see that she was alright. Now." Vargus quickly stands and opens the door, making a motioning of 'after you'.
