In gameplay, PC's may find that they are caught in the zombie convergence. This is not good... not good at all. The convergence could be anywhere from 3 to 300,000 (or more!) zombies - depending on the scenario. I am proposing the following modification for a single player battling a swarm of zombies (i.e., when the converging zombies are upon the PC en masse). Regardless of the number of zombies, the maximum number of zombies that will be able to attack you is 9. Basically, you're encircled by zombies - they're grabbing and slashing your flesh. Others may be waiting beyond the attacking zombies, but only the first 9 may strike you simultaneously. Because of their proximity, the rules for 'Zombie Close Combat' apply. However, in this case the zombies have the upper hand in the battle. As such, I propose the following modifications (ranged and/or melee attacks). These rules will come into play when 6 or more zombies are swarming on the PC: During the first melee round: PC's enjoy the +7 to strike the main body and +3 to strike the head, neck or other specific limb (as per 'Zombie Close Combat' rules). Adrenaline has kicked in and PC's are in survival mode. (Remember that punches/kicks inflict only 20% of their normal damage against zombies). The roll still has to be above the zombie AR to do damage. Zombies receive no bonus beyond that in their description (+2 strike). During the second melee round: bonuses are not applicable for the PC. The sheer proximity of the zombies makes swinging or aiming a weapon difficult, meanwhile the Zeds are grabbing at the PC and his/her weaponry. Zombies receive an additional +1 to strike and there is a 20% chance that the PC will lose a limb. During the third and subsequent melee rounds: PC's suffer a -3 to strike penalty for a headshot (this means a headshot will only be possible with a natural 20 roll). At this point, the zombies have overwhelmed the PC and are poised to tear him/her apart unless help comes quick. Zombies gain a total (including all bonuses) of +5 to strike and there is a 40% chance of losing 1d4 limb(s). When/if this happens during gameplay, I will indicate that "Swarm Rules Apply". These rules will come into play when 6 or more zombies are swarming on the PC. I hope that none of you find yourself in this unfortunate situation. If you do, you'd better start praying. Or... save that last bullet for yourself! |
