The real Burger King
Ellesmere travelled to Welshpool to find the area relatively unaffected by the that had caused the cancellation of their 2nd XI match. As it was overcast and there was a little in the air the captains agreed to play 35 overs in order to get a game in.
The home side won the toss and put Ellesmere in to bat. The visitors found it tough going and although they put on 40 for the first wicket, only opener Aaron Clegg (27) and captain Adam Huxley (21) made scores of note. The Meresiders had been pinned down initially by Sam and Ernie Birch but it was Welshpool's second line of attack of Joe Birch and Llyr Thomas that caused wickets to start tumbling. Joe Birch accounted for both opening batsmen in one over whilst Thomas grabbed the wickets of Ellesmere's number three and four. Nick Davies got in on the act for the home side grabbing a couple of wickets and Sam Birch, in his second spell, also got a brace. Ellesmere almost saw out their allotted overs but were eventually dismissed for just 93.
After tea the visitors came out in determined mood and got off to a great start as Jason Wirdnam clean bowled the Welshpool skipper Dale Evans with his first ball. Ellesmere captain Adam Huxley then captured the wicket of the number three and Wirdnam struck again to leave Welshpool on 14 for 3. Huxley continued to plug away at the home batsmen and was ably abetted by Lee Thomas and Tom Davies who bowled well without the reward of a wicket. Young spinner Shawn Melusi caused Welshpool all sorts of problems and the home batsmen just could not get a partnership going. Melusi bowled five excellent overs and took three for nine. His skipper, meanwhile, was increasing his own wicket tally to a five-for with some delightful bowling. Welshpool were rocking but the visitors remained resolute in their task, working hard for one another and well aware that they were defending a small total. In the end though, the hosts simply could not withstand the Ellesmere bowling and their final wicket fell after 28 overs with the score on just 51.
Ellesmere (24 points) 93 all out from 33 overs. Aaaron Clegg 27. Adam Huxley 21. Joe Birch 3 for 15. Sam Birch 2 for 23. Llyr Thomas 2 for 23. Nick Davies 2 for 6.
Welshpool (5 points) 51 all out from 28.3 overs. Adam Huxley 5 for 11. Shawn Melusi 3 for 9. Jason Wirdnam 2 for 17.
