His Majesty The Emperor has made the following statement: "As many of you know, tomorrow is Election Day in the United States of America. In addition to the usual business of electing legislators, judges and local officials, some of us will be asked to vote on proposed constitutional amendments which are supposedly designed to ‘strengthen’ the institution of marriage by expressly limiting the definition of marriage to the union of one man and one woman. In many cases, however, these proposed amendments will also prohibit the state from recognizing a legal status that is ‘substantially similar’ to marriage. The effect of this language would be to prohibit civil partnerships, like those found in Vermont, as well as prohibit the state from offering a range of benefits to domestic partners, such as healthcare and access to pensions. In addition to affecting homosexual couples, this provision will also affect the many committed heterosexual couples who, for whatever reason, have chosen to live together without getting married. For example, in some states, such as Ohio, the courts have used this language to dismiss domestic violence complaints on the grounds that cohabiting couples are not covered by the domestic violence legislation because that would result in conferring a benefit similar to marriage on unmarried people. It is not my place as your Sovereign to instruct you how to vote in a macronational election, but I would ask you to think very carefully before you punch your ballot. Amending a state’s constitution is a very dramatic step, and it is one that is not easily reversed. The choice you make in the voting booth tomorrow could have far-reaching, perhaps unintended, consequences." |
