I'm writing an english essay on violence in video games, and I need some arguments for it. Help will be greatly appreciated. ^_^ Basically, I need some arguments as to why violence is OK in games. I have plenty of arguments against violence in games, but hardly any for. And intelligent answers please. This is for school purposes. Any arguments against violence would also be helpful, if anyone wishes to take the enemies point of view. ^_^ |

Damn, I wrote a report on this last semester...I was arguing against violent games only because it was easier than arguing for them. >< I'll try to dig up the report. |

Hmm, I'll try to get you started. First of all, not everyone who plays games are children. Adults play games too, and I doubt most of them will find leaping over barrels and eating a mushroom to get an extra hit fun. Violence, if it is a means to give the player enjoyment by testing their skill and ability in a game, has nothing wrong with it. Besides, it takes a person with a very impressionable (and idiotic) person to actually try to do something they see in a game. |

This is supposed to be a balanced essay, so I need to know good reasons for and against violence in games, and then say what my opinion is. Also, if you can think of any arguments against that you think are wrong, then post both the argument against and why you think it's wrong. Thanks in advance. |

I personally, see nothing wrong with VG violence. In moderation. Games like GTA and Mortal Kombat however, take violence to different level. There is high blood and gore simply for the sake of high blood and gore. It isn't to freak you out, shock you, or even for a realistic feel, it's gratuitous violence for the sake of itself. Now, a little blood is fine if you have a reason, such as bleeding in an FPS, being mowed down in an RTS, etc. But it isn't right to have more blood than the human body has in it to come out of a person's head/spinal cord/whatever. I'm done. |

To build on that... Most, if not all impressionable masses in question are below 18. Stores are supposed to only sell M-rated games to adults, or people with adults in company. Barring stores that don't care and teens that look older than normal and/or have fake IDs("LAWL! I getz teh faek ID for teh vroom-vroom-SMASH game!"), the game goes through a sort of double-filter before getting into the kid's hands. By then, if nobody's notices, that's just negligence. The only reason the superviolence gets into the hands of stupid kids is because people LET them. Simple matter of responsible parenting. Wait, this isn't an arguement... *stuffs small stack of M-rated games under rug* |

ON the parenting point: I once saw a woman with a young, maybe 8 or 9 year old child in GameStop. The child picks out San Andreas and Vice City quickly, and takes them to his mom. The mom doesn't even glance at the case before asking the clerk to buy it. The clerk warns the woman about the violent content. The woman smiles and nods, then pays for the games, gives them to her son, and walks out. I simply shake my head in awe and mutter under my breath. |

Violence in video games has the potential to prevent violence in the real world, IMO. It's quite liberating to boot up a GTA game and go on a rampage, or mow through a hoard of Meat Sims on Perfect Dark. They're a safe outlet for the aggressive feelings that we, as humans, naturally build up in everyday life. Now, we COULD start firing rifles at people from the roof of our real life homes to release these feelings, or we can do it in a fantasy world where no one actually gets hurt. So long as you can seperate the fantasy world of video games from reality, there is really nothing wrong with violence in video games. It's not like you don't see it everyday in movies or on TV, anyway. And as far as the impressionable minds go, that's why video games have a recommended age clearly stamped on the cover, and they only reach the hands of impressionable kids through the negligance of their parents, and retailers. ... Kwee? |

Violence through video games is just one of many outputs for anger. Some people go to firing ranges. Others use a form of martial arts to releash anger. Video games are just another way to do so. As long as the person buying the game is fully aware of the risks, They should be allowed to play the game. |

... Hoo boy. I did a report on this a couple years back, and I'd post it if my old comp hadn't completely borked over. Admittedly, I pulled at least half of it out of my ass, due to the fact that I did it at the last minute and didn't really need to improve my grade in that class, but it still had some info. Regardless, here's my rant on the topic. It's not exactly kiddy material in and of itself, due to the GTA3 references in there, so consider yourselves warned. Violent video games. Let's start and stop right there. Yes, they're violent. Not even a retarded monkey will deny that. BUT THEY'RE VIDEO GAMES, PEOPLE. They're completely fictional in every way, shape, and form. You play Starcraft, and a voice yells, "NUCLEAR LAUNCH DETECTED", are you gonna jump up from your chair and run like mad from your computer to the nearest bomb shelter? Of course not. You know it's fictional. If, however, all you soccer moms out there still think that your kids will try to imitate the violence in the video games, and you should therefore get rid of your GTA games, get rid of another popular title while you're at it. Mario. That's right. Mario. He's a fat plumber with facial hair who runs around eating Mushrooms to get stronger. By your logic, soccer moms, your kids are going to see this, say to themselves, "Hey, I gotta try that!", and then run out and eat every mushroom they can find (which would be absolutely disgusting, because mushrooms in and of themselves are icky). They might get HIGH! OH NOES!!! What? You say your kids are too smart to do that sort of thing? In that case, wouldn't your kids also be too smart to mimic what they see in Mortal Kombat III.XIV? (kudos if you get the number joke) Oh, wait, that's right. That's logic, and logic is scary. Let's stay away from logic. Now, if you actually try to come to some sort of comprimise as to this, I respect the desicion. Hell, I don't have a problem with slapping an ESRB rating onto games, and I haven't had a problem with it since before I could buy T rated games on my own. It won't do much good (except in cases like Conker's Bad Fur day, which I'll get to in a minute), but I don't really care, since it won't do much harm, either. However, if you've actually got the, to quote a certain Illinois politician whose name I couldn't spell to save my life, "testicular virility" to go out and continue whining about the existance of violent video games, then I've got a message for you. You see the game your kid, who we will dub "Bobby" for the sake of Now, before you go screaming, "OH MY GOD THE EVIL VIDEO GAME COMPANIES ARE TRYING TO POISON MY SON'S FRAGILE LITTLE MIND THEY ARE ENEMIES OF CHRIST LET'S BUUUUURRRRNNNN THEM!!!", consider this: If all that offended you, why did you buy your son a game titled "Grand Theft Auto III"? Oops, sorry. Did I use too much LOGIC in that question? Come out from under the table, and put down that cross. Anyway, in some cases, the title can be misleading, and I can get that. Conker's Bad Fur Day is a perfect example of this. After all, Conker himself first appeared in Diddy Kong Racing, and that was a very kiddy game. Even I didn't expect the game to be the kind of vulgar hilarity that it was ("I AM THE GREAT MIGHTY POO, AND..." you all know the rest by now, right?), since Conker looked like he was just another Rare character, in his own game that was kid-friendly without actually being a kiddy game (i.e., Banjo-Kazooie). Instead, I find a game that has a boss named "The Great Mighty Poo", and I'll admit, that surprised even me. However, that's where the ESRB comes in. In cases like this one, I actually think the ESRB rating is a damned good idea. Conker's Bad Fur Day might have featured a character from Diddy Kong Racing, but the ol' ESRB slapped a big fat M rating on it. That should've been a gigantic clue, and because of it, my parents decided to do some research on it before letting me get it (hey, I was like twelve or something like that at the time, they still determined lots of stuff I could do). They saw it wasn't one of those blood-and-guts-for-the-hell-of-it games, so they let me get it. There are two things you, or anyone else, can do to prevent kids from playing violent video games: 1. You can simply have some faith in the ESRB's rating system and follow the guidelines. 13 and up for a T rated game, along with 17 and up for an M rated game. I don't recommend this, if only because I feel that the ESRB is too strict in some areas, but if you really don't have the time to research it, then it's the best option, since the ESRB prefers to play it safe, and will usually give out a T rating for a small thing (you don't believe me, then go to the store and tell me how many EC rated games are on the shelves). It's overkill, but you'll be erring on the side of caution. 2. If you feel like being nicer than that, then you'll need to take some time to look into what game the kid wants to buy. That there Internet has a search engine called Google, which will do quite nicely in finding you some info on the game. Better yet, go to GameFAQs, and look for some reviews. The reviews for games on that site actually have a tendancy to be fairly useful. Use those to determine whether or not you should get that game for your kid. See? Easy as [This pi joke was deleted at the request of good taste.]. If you do either of the above, and decide you don't want your kid playing the game, then don't get it for them. [/rant over] Cookie if you actually read that. That was longer than I thought it would be. |

I was watching a special on this subject on TechTV(or G4 as it's called these days). A whole bunch of things were said, the ones I remember most are that violent crimes amongst minors has been dropping since 1992 instead of the opposite and this was a time when games like DOOM and Mortal Kombat were the big things. Another major thing with violent games is THAT THEY ARE NOT MEANT FOR 10 YEAR OLDS. The ESRB is there for a reason, if a parent allows their child to play violent games and said child actually is very impressonable, then it is the parent's fault for not taking care of their child, not the game makers. |

I agree, though not wholeheartedly. I do feel that violence should not be so prolific and unrealistic in video games (and the media in general), but it is the parent's fault if the child gets a violent game. |

Agreed, you two, although for Chrono, I think it's just a matter of a target market. I think Mortal Kombat (or however the hell they slaughter the English language) and GTA are kinda stupid, but they've got the right to exist, and it's not the fault of the people who make the the games if kids end up picking up hookers every time they want to become healthier. Hey, I still remember when people babbled nonstop about GTA3. I have a bad habit of listening to people when they babble. |

Thing about GTA is that it doesn't have to be mindless violence, you could also choose to be the good guy and run in an ambulence(sp?) or a fire truck and save people, you don't to run around with a flamethrower setting everything on fire. |

I glanced in here just now, and I have a good reason as to why they put violence in video games. VIOLENCE ADDS REALISM TO GAMES. In some games, it's not only the "BANG BANG SHOOT 'EM UP BLOOD YUM YUM!" stuff, it adds to the realism of the game itself. Would Zoo Tycoon be realistic without an escaped tiger mauling a guest? No. Would Simcity be realistic if fires, floods, and riots never happened (though I always prefered unleashing Godzilla on my little sities)? No. Hell, would even The Sims be realistic if Bobby didn't smack Joey for hooking up with Clarissa? No, of course not. Violence isn't all about pumping Nazis full of lead and splattering some demon-spawn against a wall. It can actually make simulation games seem more real, to an extent. |

Shade, simulation games aren't really the issue, as far as I know. The issue is with games like Grand Theft Auto and about 90% of all FPS games out there. And pumping Nazis full of lead, while fun, is irrelevant (I think). |

Indeed. *whips out chaingun and lets loose* But that's not the point! The thing is, people don't want to have to actually deal with their kids anymore, so they just buy them whatever in hopes that they'll shut up. Then, when they see what they're playing, they freak out and start pointing fingers at the video game companies. My question is, did Rockstar games hold a gun to your head and force you to buy GTA for your eight-year old, or did you just do whatever? |

Ok, here's what I've read about the subject (I didn't read all the posts above this, so I apologize if any of the information is redundant: Statistics have shown that people who play games like Mortal Kombat and Grand Theft Auto in general tend to be more aggressive and antisocial than those who don't. However, this does not necessarily mean that the games make people aggressive and antisocial. The argument has been raised (and I personally think it is right) that people who are aggressive and antisocial to begin with are more likely to enjoy these types of games. Hope that that was of some help, dood. I'll try and find the actual article in which I found this information (it's an online source). BTW, do you have to write up a bibliography and all that crap? Or does your teacher not require it? |
