Yeah. This is what I'm turning in tomorrow unless I find some spelling or grammatical errors. Strong thanks go to Zap for the help with paragraph four. *appreciates Zap's help*

Rough Draft- Theme

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a large group of British boys get stranded on an island after a plane crash. Forming a mock-government on this deserted isle, all seems to be going well with a boy named Ralph as the leader and a conch shell as a symbol of their unity. However, a rebel group of people called hunters resists against this government and break away into a society of killing and murder, and this eventually converts the entire group of boys into savages. When the rules of civilization fail, a barbaric and irrational society can emerge, making consequences even greater.
A person who is placed in a leadership position in an unearned state sometimes will abuse the power given to them through that place in society. An example of “the abuser” is Jack, one of the prominent figures from the choir of the school. At first, Jack is an ordinary one of these boys; in fact, he is a stereotypical British boy being polite, civilized, and well behaved. When he gains control of the majority of the boys through the offer of protection from “the beast,” however, he abuses this position by hurting others intentionally and is the one to introduce the killing and murderous thoughts within his sadistic mind.” Roger, an “accomplice” to Jack is also very responsible for his abusive actions on the island. Not even being elected for anything, he is the one to drop the boulder on Piggy, causing a gruesome and horrifying death where Piggy “fell forty feet and landed on his back…his head opened and stuff came out and turned red” (181). Roger also takes joy in torturing some of the younger boys for no reason but for pleasure. Lastly, the group of hunters themselves abuses their position, which had been originally set for getting food enough to live. They were also ordered to keep a signal fire going, but when they see a pig, they chase after it, leaving the signal fire behind. It is too late when they discover during the time the fire went out, a boat had been passing by the island.
A horrific fear of many, the fear of the unknown or unseen, can lead an entire group of people in a downward spiral towards hysteria. During the earlier parts of the novel, the children fear something known as creepers or beasties, which are really just vines hanging from the trees of the jungle. The children soon realize this, and Ralph shows the children what the beasties really are; yet there is that looming fear of what they do not know about. Another fear of the people on the island is the fear of the beast from the water, which was fabled to be a mystical beast that came from the ocean. One of the children raises this idea among the other people and some agree with the idea of this, causing some fear to break out upon the group of children. The child tells them that his father “…says there’s things…hundreds of yards long and eat whales” (88). The greatest of all the things that are feared, however, is the beast from the air, which is really a man who has fallen from the sky, shot down during an aerial battle. The children see this as “the beast” when they go up to the mountain to hunt for it. After seeing “something like a great ape…holding towards them the ruin of a face” (123), they spread the word along with panic upon the children. After this, people are on their guard from the beast and even offer dead pigs to it for protection. Ultimately, this leads to the loss of control in the government that the boys had set up.
As the boys continue in their downward slump towards anarchy, there is a steady loss of their own innocence. When they first come onto the island, they are civilized and have known nothing except how to behave and be good children, with experience from most likely very wealthy homes. When they come onto the island, however, it all changes. Some of the boys on the island, such as Jack, would have never been ruthless, but as he puts on the clay, “He felt…liberated from shame and self confidence” (64). Upon this changing, he becomes a killer and murderer, first of pigs, and then of humans. Other people change as well as they join the group of hunters formed by Jack, such as Roger, who has a sick mind as he pushes the rock off and enjoys the death of Piggy. He exercises tough punishment and tortures littluns for little reason besides the pleasure. As the Naval Commander rescues the boys, “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of a man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy” (202). Yet, as the Naval Commander is depicted in the novel as a savior of the children, he, as well as other men in the world, are losing their innocence through the everyday murder of men that they probably go through with the war at hand in the novel’s timeline. It can be implied, however, through the transformation of the children, that the loss of innocence is affected greatly by the people around you and their actions. Whether good or evil, the people that surround you can influence you for the better or for the worse.
From these points taken from the novel, real life can be applied. In history, corrupt leaders take office in a government or economic position and can abuse it, whether it is unfair laws or massacres of an entire race or ethnicity. Hitler is an example of this with the abused position as Fuhrer over Germany in the time of the Second World War. The fear of the unseen or known can be applied to most all people in that during some time of their life, there has been something that they could not see or hear, but they knew it was there. Perhaps one of the greatest fears of people is the fact that they know something is there, but they don’t know what it is. The loss of innocence can also be applied to ordinary life, perhaps not as severe as the boys on the island, however. Stealing or cheating or getting into a bad habit of something can be a steady decline of an individual’s innocence, or even more severe. The novel acts as an allegory, a story with a greater meaning, and it shows symbolism; it shows the evil of the human race.

Yeah, A Wrinkle in Time isn't very good... At my school, we had the option of either that or The Magician's Nephew. I picked Magician's Nephew.
