Vegetarians?

Those that believe that eating ONLY vegetables (no carbs or proteins) will make them healthy? I pity them. For one they don't know what they're missing. Two, they are being the complete opposite of eating healthy.

People believe that since vegetables are a healthy thing to eat, that if they continuously eat that, and only that, they will remain healthy. We all know vegetables contain valuable vitamins and minerals, and that is considered healthy. However, vitamins and minerals are the least of your bodies worries.

Nutrition. The scientific study of ALL interaction between food and a living organism. That being said, nutrients include two sections of nutrients. 1.) Macronutrients and 2.) Micronutrients.

Macro = a lot, big, large amount
Micro = little bit, small, low amount

In the macronutrient group, we have Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and surprisingly, Water. (Its so important to our bodies that it has its own category in the nutrients!) And in the micronutrient group, we have Vitamins, and Minerals.

That being said, the groups of nutrients you only need a tiny amount of, is the nutrients you largely receive from vegetables. That being said, doesn't eating only vegetables, and nothing else, sound a little silly?

The issue of nutrients aside, lets talk about proteins, which is what vegans are trying to put aside.

Protein, one category of the macronutrients. Now, you all probably know that proteins are made OUT of amino acids. Now, you need to know that you're body needs the amino acids, to synth different proteins around your body. There are very sensitive proteins in your body, like the tissue behind your eye, and cartilidge near/in your spinal cord. More so, there are 22 different amino acids your body needs, 8 of which are essential. (essential meaning your body cannot make them, and you need to ingest them through your diet.)

Ingesting amino acids as amino acids can have VERY adverse affects, and doing so isn't recommended. (You eat proteins, which are then stripped to their amino acid make-up, which is then whisked away to re-create another protein)

Now, knowing that you need 22 different types of amino acids each day, 8 of which your body can NOT make, you need to be very selective of what meat you eat. Your body can only take so much proteins, and use so much. All the rest are excreted through your body, through your urine, taken out of your body somehow. I believe the relative amount of protein a body can take is 50 grams. (varies from person to person) Now, anything after your limit has to be excreted. (Because proteins contain Nitrogen, which is toxic to your body)

Sometimes, people eat too much protein, and can not excrete it all out. This leads to increasing probability of cancer. (particularly of the colon.) Nitrogen causes cancer, it allows cancer to happen, blah blah blah, thats a different topic.

Now, knowing you can only take in a limited amount of protein, and that you need a DIVERSE range of it, what do you eat to get it? Well, the best sources of protein are eggs and milk, believe it or not. Both eggs and milk harbor precious amino acids you can't find anywhere else (at least regularly). (And it you think about it, it makes sense. Eggs are chicks before they become chicks, so the whole egg constitutes a living thing. Milk is for nurturing babies, so they can grow up right, so that makes sense too.)

Now, knowing that you NEED proteins to live, doesn't eating only vegetables sound a little silly?

Don't even get me started on the Atkins diet, and carbohydrate neglectance. (carbs, whose most basic form ((glucose!!)) is the sole life-energy of your brain!!)

Oh, and non-humane... Well, they kind of aren't human, are they? Not to mention, welcome to Earth. This kind of thing has been happening since evolution made one species realize it could get energy to live by eating another one.

I could go on, but I'm not angry.

Me: Exactly. While it's a rule of life that to sustain themselves, living things must consume the energy of others (which raises many theological questions), it's become quite excessive lately. If someone doesn't want to eat meat, then why give them grief? Even if they are a bit misguided, since plants are living things as well (if not as cogniscient as animals), it shouldn't merit ridicule for something as simple as a lifestyle choice to not eat animals.

It should also be noted, however, that vegans, who do not eat any animal biproducts, are quite insane. Please, carry on.

Well, Addar, that might be correct, but humans were designed as omnivores. Our bodies weren't built to live exclusively on meat or exclusively on plants. You're going against biology by not eating meat, in a sense.

Eh, no? The human has developed a brain that let us create these things so we can develop in other areas. Admittedly, there are pointless things out there, but those are driven by forces other than biology.

Then biologically, the human brain is allowed to surpress immediate gratification for long-term advantage. No other animal has significant long-term planning skills.

So if you buy into the idea that vegitarianism is healthy (which I don't, not entirely), then it's completly biologically sane to only eat vegtables.

Haha, I think the vegans who do it to be "healthy" and don't look into it first are a little retarded... also the vegans who do it just to be vegan, the image...

I swear, on my college campus theres a HUGE line of people going to eat the vegetarian food, and they ALL look like zombies... discoloration in their skin, hunched postures... gross o_O Funny thing is, they were right next to Human Nutrition 191...

Anyways, the vegetarians who eat eggs and drink milk are cool =] (as long as they eat carbs too) I'm pretty sure they're called olvo-something-vegetarians.

EDIT:
I'm not making fun of anybody... I just wish people would actually look into things before jumping to pre-made conclusions...

... uh-huh.

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've had arguments with my friends about vegetarians, since at least two of them are. Thankfully none of them are vegan.

I would argue about it, but I'm going swimming. I may say something when I get back.

Let's see.

Now, three of my friends are vegetarian. Two are anaemic. The one who is not is only healthy because she eats lots of meat substitutes, like quorn. See, she eats something that looks, tastes and has similar nutrient values to meat but *gasp* is not meat! In order for her to be healthy, she needs to eat something similar to meat, so what does that tell you?

See, in order to be healthy, vegetarians have to have strict control over their diet. Normal people do as well, but since vegetarians are cutting off a huge nutrient supply they have to be even more careful. You can't just cut out all meat and expect it not to have an effect on you. Humans are omnivores, we are designed to eat both meat and vegetables, in fact, we need to eat both in order to stay healthy. Substitutes do not equal the real thing, as that is all they are. Taking iron supplements is not as good as getting it from natural sources like red meat, one of my anaemic friends can testify to that.

You can't just turn round one day and on a whim say, "I'm going to be vegetarian, I'm going to stop eating all meat." If you're serious about being vegetarian, you need to realise that it is going to be a big change and it is going to have an effect on your health if you don't do your homework and make sure you change your diet to account for the loss of a source of iron and protein.

Dont get me wrong, I have no problems with people being vegetarians. I have problems with them thinking it's the best style of life to follow, that it's the healthiest lifestyle.

Me: My sister went vegetarian after having to dissect a ig heart in school. For six months, she didn't eat meat. (Supposedly, but she was still eating school lunches, so I'm having a hard time believing no meat was ingested...) I don't know about her health or whatever, but she was really cranky.

Last night I had a dream that my children would not be judged by the color of their usernames, but by the content of their posts.

YES! EXACTLY!!!!

Thats the problem I have, I just couldn't articulate it well enough...

Being vegetarian is a LIFESTYLE change, that's not something to be taken lightly...

You are a sesame.

And on vegeterians, they can do whatever they like, as long as they don't kill themselves or steal my meat. MY MEAT! MINE!
I wish I were what I was when I was trying to become what I am now.
