Your characters' names

Spots Toranis, comin' through!

...Where did they come from? Was there some sort of inspiration for them? Is there any background behind the names you chose? How did you come up with your characters names?

Keldane: Changed from Kelden, since it was already taken. I actually semi-stole it from a friend who used a somewhat similar name for one of his RP-characters on an unrelated site, and changed it to Kelden, then I brought the name here, and, well...

Darnan: Just one of those random names I made up one day for some reason. I don't remember having any inspiration for it, I just experimented with sticking random sounds together, and that's what came up.

Taeros: Directly stolen from that friend from earlier. I joined a game he made, and couldn't decide on a name, so he named the character for me with one of his usual bizzare names (though this one was one of the most normal-looking and normal-sounding I've ever seen him come out with), and I just... kept using it.

Lee: Just some random name. Although, originally, I was going to have a Mercenary named James, and a Monk named Lee. I sorta combind the two, I guess (not in personality or story, though). A mercenary by the name of Lee. I didn't go with James because Ace had a character by that name already.

Jim: I decided to say "Aw, screw it" on the matter of James being taken, and using Jim instead. That's it, really. Although the class got changed from monk to prepromo Sage. I just like Sages.

Kyle: just some random name I decided on, absolutely nothing behind this one.

December: My older sister actually used this name a lot when naming little-girl characters for various things. I had a 10-year old girl (who happened to be of the sneaky sort) who needed a name, and this popped into my mind.

Brandon: For those of you who follow (or as the case may turn out to be, followed) EIA's RP's, you might remember Lee's "promotion RP" where he found his old comrades' shield and Axe. Well, this is the guy who's Shield Lee found. Same guy. The name was random again, though. Nothing behind the name itself, I just decided on a random name while writing the RP during Math class. >>

HELLO EVERYBODY

Well, let's see...

Robert: Well, as I'm sure I've mentioned on more then one occasion, Robby and Greg are sutbly based of Bob and George(Although, that's changed alot more now that I've fleshed them out more). I didn't want to use exact names, so I decide to use the name that Bob is usually short for, Robert.

Gregory: Like I said above, but I wanted it to be simillar to George, so Gregory it was.

Ryan: Back when I was frequenting KoL and the newbie chat room of that place, I became acquainted with a guy named Rhian. Cool guy, don't know if he still goes. I decided to use that name as it sounded good, but after getting some questions as to how it was pronouced, I decided to rename him to a name that sounded close. Ryan it was.

Ironfist/Graham: Well, he's not technically a character yet, but in about a day or so, I should be finished with his rp-profile. Anyway, his real name, I based off some screenshots of some rpg. Game looked pretty crappy, but I saw the name 'Graham', and it seemed to fit the sound of an older general type. As for Ironfist, I got the idea for him to be using a large magical ganulet, and that name just popped into my head.

Layla: Named after the Eric Clapton/Derek and the Dominos song 'Layla'. Awesome song, and can't go wrong with naming something after something to do with Clapton.

Ralah: Old name I created. I lifted it from a series of Starcraft campaigns I was working on at some point. Ralah was the main hero, leading his Terran forces against an ever-growing Zerg invasion that just gets uglier, until Protoss comes and saves them, and they begin to work together against Zerg.

Christina: I think I got this from a random name generator. Anyways, it's just a simple, kinda boring, name.

Aligor: Another old name I created. Basically, he was a Protoss hero that helped out Ralah's Terran forces.

Valentina/Selene: The first came from a random name generator, the second came from the fact that Helios's sister in mythology is named Selene.

Helios: God of the sun in Greek mythology.

Atlas: Punished by the gods by forcing him to carry the entire Earth on his back. Greek mythology.

Cerpin Taxt: A character from The Mars Volta's album De-Loused in the Comatorium. He falls into a drug-induced coma, He encounters the Tremulants in the coma world is then given to opportunity to become prince of the Tremulants. He is sent into a what can somewhat accurately be described another coma, in order to receive penance. He exists in Elibe to prove his worth. Cerpin Taxt represents the real person Julio Venegas, friend of the members of The Mars Volta, who committed suicide after falling into a drug-induced coma.

... uh-huh.

Laura - She looks like one of my r/l friends called Laura.

Matt - *shrugs*

Kathryn - I like the name Kathryn.

Silphia - Originally Silvia but MM had that name so I changed it to Silph and then added the ia on the end for kicks. <_<;;

Aradia - Means Goddess of Witches. She was originally a mage, so the magical name made sense.

Kethia - The name Keitha means female warrior. I switched the i's position after typoing it when saving and decided I liked it after the h instead of before the t.

Seraphina - Means angel and is very nice name. Nuff said.

Lykaios - Means wolf-like. <_<;;

Reidar - Means warrior.

Ziarre - Means Goddess of the sky.

Ok, hop aboard then. Adventure awaits.

Vicas - Duh.

Hannah - First name I came up with when making my second character

Rose - Same as Hannah, except for third character.

Jabin - This is the only name that actually has a bit of a story behind it. At my old school, they would always have a section in the yearbook with all of the eighth graders and some information about them, including nicknames. Well, one of my listed nicknames was Jabin. No, I have no idea where it came from, but now some people call me Jabin. It seemed like a good idea for a character name.

Ka'rem - Random naming session in the MSN convo. Gigs thought of Karem, KJ thought of the apostrophe, and Blaze thought of Dolen, his last name.

Shade/Cassandra: I took "Shade" from my GFAQs SN when ?I first joined the FEABL. The name "Cassandra" came later, when I needed a royal-sounding name for her. I swiped it from Cassandra Goth on The Sims.

Aeon: A cool spelling of eon. I just pronounce it, "A-ON".

Ahi: Hawaiian for fire. I liked it, so I used it.

Xander: The name of a character in a story I'm writing, but he's the complete polar opposite of my FEABL character.

Miranda: First name that popped into my mind.

Clarence: I wanted something that sounded big and lovable. Hence, Clarence.

Leroy: I wanted something stupid-sounding for a stupid-looking character. It was a toss-up between Leroy and Herman, and Leroy won.

Nausika: I stole it from the Myazaki anime movie and changed the spelling of it.
"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice."

Actually, Nausika is an alternate spelling of Nausica, the princess of Phaecia who helps Odysseus return to Ithaca. From the Odyssey.

Feeling spritely.

Nausicaa was also the name of a planet in Star Trek: TNG, whose name may or may not have been stolen borrowed from the Nausicaa (it's spelled that way in my mythology book, IIRC) of the Odyssey.

~~~
Here are the origins of my characters' names. The first three were decided on before I even registered here. >.>
Naia: I was debating between Rain and Lavender (in which case she'd have had light purple hair instead of blue) for her originally, then I came across the word Naiad in the Chronicles of Narnia, a Naiad being a water spirit. I had already decided that her affinitity would be ice, so I shortened Naiad to the more feminine-sounding Naia, which matched her affinity and hair color, wasn't technically an everyday noun being used as a name, and overall just seemed to fit her best. I think I may have taken the water/ice theme a little too far with her, what with her affinity, spell preference, and whatnot, but meh. I still like her.
Firenze: After having decided that I didn't want Naia to be an only child, her brother's general character was easy to think of--it kind of came to me rather than me having to consciously think about it. I had his appearance, personality, backstory, et cetera figured out, but there was a slight problem: He had no name, and I couldn't think of a single one that fit him. I remembered that one time when Shade had made a custom map/scenario in Heroes of Might and Magic III, she'd renamed one of the elves Firenze. This particular elf actually looked somewhat like my Firenze, and the name seemed to fit his red hair and Fire affinity. Again, perhaps I took the fire thing a little too far, but that's beside the point. Unfortunately, I didn't find out until later that Shade herself had stolen the name from a centaur in a Harry Potter book (I haven't read any of them). Bah. (On a side note, Firenze is the only one of my characters who was going to be a different class than the one he ended up with, all the way up to a week before his creation; he was originally going to be a nomad with Lynore being a vestal, but I switched their classes at the last minute 'cuz it seemed like the thing to do. Firenze still kept the sword he'd have gotten as a nomadic trooper, though.)
Lynore: I think Lynore went through the most changes before her creation. Her name was originally going to be Lynei, but after typing it once, I decided that it looked odd, no matter how I changed the spelled of it. So, one night, I couldn't sleep, and I was listening to an old mystery from the '40s or '50s on the radio. One of the characters in it was named Eleanor (guessing on the spelling of it), but it always sounded like it was being pronounced as 'Lynore.' Fortunately, I remembered it the next day, and Lynore has been Lynore ever since. Though she wouldn't even have come into being if I hadn't been indecisive on whether Naia was going to have an older brother or an older sister.... That was one time when indecision was good.
Mu Arae: Poor Mu. She was nameless for so long, let alone all the other things I hadn't decided on. Back when the possibility of fourth characters had come up among the members who already had high-leveled thirds, I thought to myself, "A pegasus knight might be fun to train. If fourth characters ever come into existence, I'll have a pegasus knight. With purple hair. Muahahaha." So I set to work on her portrait. I was going to recycle Lavender for her name, since she already had purple hair, or use Elise, for no real reason. Somewhere in there, I was reading a National Geographic magazine while taking a break from her portrait; the article I was reading was about how other planets (gas giants like Jupiter to be exact) had been discovered orbiting distant stars via a new method of astronomy. One of the stars mentioned in the article was named (you guessed it) Mu Arae. I liked it (and pronounced it incorrectly from the very beginning), so I polled Shade on which name to use; she said to go with Mu. I used Elise for her pegasus instead. The fact that her name (nearly) rhymes with 'mute,' which she is, was entirely a coincidence--I figured that RPing with a mute character would be challenging, but interesting, and decided on that several months after choosing her name, without even realizing the connection. That also finalized my idea of her dabbling in Dark magic, because otherwise she can't communicate with non-telepaths.
Mars Zarik (fifth character whom I reserved a profile for but have not RPed with or anything): Not quite sure where I got his name from. FEaddict had asked in hmmmm for suggestions as to a name for his mage-to-be. I suggested Mars, which he didn't pick in the end. The name grew on me; to me, it sounds like a good name for a somewhat sadistic, exceedingly smart, and quite arrogant shaman, which is precisely what Mars is. He's probably the opposite of the Roman god of war (whose name was Mars), who wasn't too bright but was a warrior, obviously. Whereas Mars is the opposite--he's a self-proclaimed genius and overall a scrawny little fellow. His last name was a combination of two random syllables that I tossed together.
I'll add more for my RP-onlies, but I want to get these posted first.
Hithlum- A place in LOTR. The name sounded cool.
Cyril- It's a real name of some little kid I knew. I thought "hey, thats a cool name", so I stole it.
Chiback- Completely random and out of nowhere. I have no idea.
Angel- I really like the idea of Angel as a guys name. I actually thought of it before the obvious reference.
Collins- no comment.
DELETEDZORZ (or until I remake them at least):
Helias- It's actually a Catholic High School one of my college friends went to, and I thought it was much to good a name to be wasted on education.
Haven't we done this already?
Mark: He's Mark. That's also the FE7 tactician's name, from a time when I was lazy and uncreative. Okay, I still am. But still.
Ivrin: From the Eithel Ivrin of LOTR lore, where Turin was healed after he killed Beleg. (On Ivrin's lake is endless laughter / Cool and clear by crystal fountains)
Isfin: Abandoned name for Aradhel, again from LOTR's First Age. I happened to be reading HoME while thinking of a name for my WR, and yeah.
Firiel: Again, an alternative name for a LOTR character (do you see a pattern here?): Miriel, from the very first parts of the Silmarillion.
Elenwe: Not strictly an alternative name, just a ridiculously minor one that I thought sounded cool. And hey, cool name for a ridiculously stat-blessed character. Finding out where the name comes from is left as a reader exercise.
Aerin: Ooh, I forgot this one. I think it's some name for a LOTR flower (the Sindar translation for Evermind comes to mind), but I can't be sure.
Daeron: Random bard person from (guess what) the Silmarillion. He's kinda important, but nobody remembers him (Beren gets all the praise), so I figured I could jack his name. Since FEABL doesn't have bards, I figured NT was as good a class as any for him.
Ithryn: Sindar for Wizard. Which makes zero sense, but I originally was planning him as Ivrin v.2. I noticed that the name happened to rhyme with my other two I-characters, and it stuck even when he became a Knight.
Don't want to stat? Web statuator, effort-free version. Still in testing.
Brind'Amour: A book series. Some wizard who lived with dragons, several thousand years later he awoke and found a run away prince, used him to start a rebellion and became a king.
Dorian: No clue.
Luthien: The prince that Brind used.
Dwayne: Friend.
Lady Drakonis
ha ha ha
I've done this so many times before, but that doesn't mean I don't like doing so...
Diabala: I can't remember what I was thinking when I named her this. Basically means "devil", although she could hardly be considered evil. Annoying, maybe, but not evil. It probably just sounded cool at the time.
Drakonis: This one shouldn't be very hard.
Lunitari: I was reading the Dragonlance series, and I found I loved the names of the moons. So, I decided that my second character would be named after one of them. Solinari simply didn't work, so it was a toss-up between Lunitari and Nuitari. Lunitari won. And two things that most people probably didn't pick up: Her names red, the same colour as Lunitari (the moon), and her original appearance (albino, black robes) consisted most notably of the colours white, black and red, like the moons.
Kiisharaa: A name came up on a fantasy name generator that I sort of liked, so I added and dropped a few letters here and there until I was happy with it.
Damien: Thought it was a fitting name for a dhampir.
D'mitrii: I sat around for hours trying to think of a really sophisticated-sounding name to give a weird little servant kid, and, well, this one popped into my head.
Vaurienne: Feminine form of the French adjective "vaurien", which pretty much means "good-for-nothing". I thought it'd be funny to name one of the nicest, most helpful of my characters that. I'm such a freak. XD
Fauviné: Also French, originally. Fauviné was originally going to be named Novinia, but it sounded to prim and proper for a rough, bloodthirsty pirate woman. So, I started randomly opening my French-English dictionary and looking at the words on the page. Fauve caught my eye, both because it sounded cool and had a very fitting description: wild beast, esp. a type of large, wild cat. (or something of that nature). I thought I would stick with that, then somewhere along the line I dropped the "e" and added and "iné". Her last name came about in much the same way, I tried to find another animal that described her somewhat, and came up with scorpion. The French translation of scorpion was pretty much the same word, however, so I randomly started translating it into other languages and figured the Spanish translation (alacrán) sounded wicked. Of course, I picked up the book House of the Scorpion about a month later, and all my fun at finding her a last name I thought was unique was ruined. >_< Excellent book, though, but I'm getting off-topic.
Enfâra: A fancified version of the (you guessed it) French word "enfers", which means hell. Her last name is derived from the word s'évanouir, which means something along the lines of to faint, to lose consciousness, to go comatose, etc. Her name has a bit of a connection to her plot, though, so that all I'm saying.
Andanté: He was originally going to be called Danté, but I thought people might confuse his name with Damien's and, at the time, there already was a Dante. A little later on, I looked at a piece of my violin music and noticed the tempo was Andante. So I used that, and added the "é" from his previous name onto it.
There's also a bunch of my other characters that never lasted long enough to be really important. A few of them have names with histories behind them, but I think this list is long enough as it is.
Me: Again? Okay...
Cait's name comes from my little sister's friend. I found it very odd that Caitriona would be pronounced the same as Katrina, yet have something pronounced Kate as a nickname. So when I made a neat portrait, I just decided to save it as Caitriona. Then I found the FEABL and for lack of other ideas, based a character on the portrait.
Avu is "a vu" which could be translated from French as "did see", implying that he once saw but is now blind. Plus, it sounds exotic and doesn't need a nickname.
Hulark and Raieg (both now dead) were made up when I was RPing a conversation between demons and it seemed really confusing without names, so I made some up. Hulark's original name is just an extension of Hulark and Dustin was a whim. It was rather interesting though, that I gave my most cowardly character a name that means warrior.
The rest of Raieg's council were also just whims. The only ones with any meaning were the sisters Ambe and Valina, which come from the word ambivalent.
And this guy Tomba who I made up yesterday has a portrait based on Bazba, so I took the "ba" and added Tom.
Francis- My name, also means "Free One". RP-wise it's a bit of a double-edged sword... He's free in a morbid sort of "All my family keeps dying" sort of way, but yet he's not because of the way he's swept up in the plot.
Minerva- The name of the Roman goddess of wisdom, while Min is a guy, the meaning of the name still applies. His profile explains why he has a woman's name.
Erosthane- Combination of Eros (Greek god of love) and Thane (a title of nobility).
Lucha- From the basic root of light: Lux/Luc- . She's not a masked wrestler.
Conor- Pronounced the same was as Connor (meaning "dog/wolf lover") but I took the name from the latin verb conor, meaning "I try."
Moses- Biblical name, meaning "he who was drawn from the water". Moses was found floating in a lake in the desert.
Alyssa- Tracing it back through all it's forms, its origionally from Adalheidis, a germanic name meaning "Noble-kind". Also the alternate name for Dido, the Carthiginian queen of Aenead fame. Also, I had a friend named Alyssa, and just thought that it was a cool name.
Chariel: Uhm... er... well...
Arien: Originated from Orion. I wanted to call him Artemis, but that was taken.
Silian: Sounded Serpentine. That's all, really.
Keyan/Tannay: See Chariel. <_< >_>
Reisenne: Was gonna be rose, but that was nabbed as well. So I made something a tad more complex.
Hestia: Named after my cat. Cats pwn. It's actually the Greek Godess of home and hearth.
Astaren: Whim is a funny thing yaknow. <_<;; I suck at names, m'kay?
Pascal: He looks like Elrond. <_< Naw, he seemed to look... french.
Samuel: I went through a whole list on him. Finally stuck with that.
Kevin: It sounded right. M'kay?
Yes, I'm not one who looks for deep meanings in names. >_< I should do, really.
Let's see... Oh wait, I only have one. -_-;;
Ghian Fey: The name of a character I'm (attempting) to write. The main character's love interest, (hopefully she'll show up here soon) however, in the book, he works with a sword (more merc-class, but royalty). the persona's pretty much like him, though- always helping everyone else out and even keeping hope alive, even when the world is pretty much collapsing around him...
*stops rambling*
"A nation is made of people, not a single ruler." *inactive*
be wary of amazing chest
Me: Hmm...
Nick: I give you three guesses.
Kellan: Oddly enough, this was my parent's second choice for my name.
Glenna: It was originally going to be Fenna, but that sounded a lot like Fenia, so I changed it. >_>
Adder: No comment.
Clarice: I just thought it suited her.
Failene: Meh, I was getting fairly strapped for names. >_>
Walden: Walden is just a name I like.
Caelian: Actually based off the latin word for sky.
Marcellus: An homage to the music man- though the Marcellus in the film is much different than our favorite unstable bard.
Lionel: Lionel trains, d00d.
Cassius: See Jaime.
Isabel: The only good female name I could think of that wasn't taken.
Vincent: I was playing FF7 at the time I thought of Vinnie.
1478: George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, was executed by drowning in a barrel of Malmsey wine at his own request.
