So...I'm starting a new game in FE9 and I need suggestions for which characters to use. I'm kinda wanting to use different characters from what I normally use, but I don't want to go completely overobard and only use different ones; and it's too late and I'm too tired to make rational decisions right now so I'm asking you guys for help. Here are the guys I normally use: Ike (duh) Oscar Soren Boyd Kieran Volke (It'll take one hell of an argument to make me use Sothe instead) Zihark Stefan Rhys Mist Rolf Ranulf (And random prepromos as I need them to fill up space) Heh, the list doesn't look that big now I've typed it up. I would quite like support chains in there too so keep that in mind. It isn't essential though. Also, I'm not keen on Nephenee or Jill since last time I used them they were rubbish, but I might try again. Thanks in advance. |

My Nephenne is usually only good after I've given her Resolve and gotten rid of half her HP. After that, the only major difference between her and Ike is that her weapons break, and she doesn't get Aether. I think Makalov and Astrid support each other, so you could use them together. Edit: Yep, thunder and wind, if that interests you at all. |

Well, Jill is usually kickass, really, but I've had screwed Jills before, so I know what you think. (lol, 3 0-stat levelups). Marcia isn't bad at all though. She could support with Kieran, Rolf of Makalov. Brom (use the KW for him) is a good unit, and has a nice support with Zihark. And Neph, but you don't seem to want to use her. << Astrid and Malakov are excellent Paladins as well if you train them - and they support together, too. Tormod and Calill are good offensive sages I'd consider too. Reyson is awesome, but some people don't like that kind of unit. |

I personally hate Makalov, he comes under leveled and can barely DA, let alone wield a Steel Sword. Marcia? Just give her a Forged Iron Lance with only a Mt bonus, and she's good. Brom? Ugh, he's terrible if he doesn't make his expected Spd. I have no problem with Astrid, she can easily level up by abusing that Berserker boss. |

My extremely biased statement is this, he can barely hold his own against the enemies on the field, and most of my Bonus EXP is being used by Mist. Brom is also a pain to level up without Bonus EXP, he packs little punch early on. |

Astrid could, in theory, be heavily abused with her Knight's Thingamabob and hefty BEXP abuse. You have her SPD shoot through the roof, then she'd be able to dodge enough to keep herself alive, even at a lower level. Or something. I'm not using her yet, so I can't speak for her. *gets out soapbox* Consider dropping Soren from your party once you get Illy and/or Tormod. Heck, use Illy -and- Tormod. Illy supports with Zihark, who can support with the sexellent (albeit slightly inferior to Ranulf) Muarim. Largo isn't bad, late-game, and can hook supports up with the decent mid-game Devdan (who becomes relevant, if you won't use Nephy), and more importantly, Muarim himself. Back to Devdan, he supports with Tormod, who supports with Reyson, who supports with Ike or Tanis, both good units. Most of these characters are mid/late-game, however, and if you're not keen on diverging from OPTIMAL POWERZZZZ, it's a very bad team. |

Well, I think that Illyana is a great character, she uses the strongest magic, Thunder, and she actually uses Elthunder which is even better. I hate how hard it is to level up Brom... I gave Kieran a LOT of Bonus Ex and now I give him like one level up after every chapter. Some of the characters are so far behind it is almost impossible to get them good stats. I also think that Oscar sucks, though I use him. He can't do crap even after he Class Ups. Gatrie is like that too. I like to use Tauroneo (sp?) Astrid can change classes pretty well after like three chapters of giving her bonus ex. |

Now, I wouldn't say Gatrie can't to crap after Promoting. Anyways, at least someone agrees that Oscar gets screwed beyond belief. Illyana's Thunder spells give her an edge against other mages, albeit she suffers heavily from FE9's Mage-hating AS system. |

It only hates half the mages, thankyouverymuch. Cal, Tormod, and Bast do fine, although you'd never want to use Bast, unless everyone else somehow died. It's because of the first two's superior STR that they can stand up to Soren. |

I KNOW. I played Sacred Stones after PoR and I was like, you can actually use mages and sages without worrying about them dying in one hit. That also goes for most of the units in the game. I hate having to consistently use Titania, Muarim, or Lethe to kill the bosses until Ike is strong enough to do it. Has anyone actually really used Mordecai after you get Muarim? I only used him when I was low on units. He finally transforms three-fourths into the battle and he has nothing really to do because it is already situated. |

I only use laguz when I get a Demi Band, which is when I get Muarim. For the early game, Mordy has trouble getting EXP, no matter how you shake it, and the birds can't go on all-out offensives because of archers. Mordy can tank better, and that's what I use laguz for, but he can't double like Muarim can. I might try Mordy when I use Illy, though. |

I wish you could get more Demi Bands. I never used Ulki either. The best Laguz unit is Tibarn. (Unless someone has anyone better.) I never really used Nasealla (sp?) or Griffca. I have the greatest strategy for the last chapter... it is to complicated to write out, but I use it every time. Elincia was plain annoying. She just didn't have enough time to level up and Mist should have used Light Magic instead of swords, since only Rhys used Light Magic. :whatever: I always liked Rhys until he kept dying. |

Tibarn is too exclusive. "Best" would constitute being useful in more than two chapters. He's a sexy beast, but he's not practical to include in a team. Eli's not bad as a mandatory unit, though. Hit-and-run healing means I can have Mist doing other crap, and that's never bad. Amiti's a kickass sword, considering it's Brave and keeps Eli from taking OHKOs pretty well. |

Averages are nice in discussions and such, but randomness still determines characters in the end. Except for in fixed mode. >_> And I, personally, have never had an Eliwood better than decent, and he was still largely overshadowed by Lyn and Hector. I hardly ever play random mode in FE9, but the Oscars I had then didn't shine, either. |

It does, and averages are what the character is the most likely to have as stats in the end, regardless of any supposed "stability". |

Yes, but some characters simply lack stats that are expected to be exceptional or terrible despite a few oddball RNs. Deviations in their stats are far more notable than, say, Serra ending with a few points more res or Boyd having bit less res than usual. |

Ok, I've decided that, since they pwn in FE9, I'm gonna use all four of the unpromoted Paladins (Oscar, Kieran, Astrid and Makalov). I want use Soren and Tormod too. So, my team right now consists of: Ike Mist Volke Soren Oscar Kieran Astrid Makalov Tormod --- --- --- So...who should the last three (maybe four) characters be? |

Alright; I've figured that I can get a support chain working if I add in Marcia to support with Kieran, Jill to support with Mist and Haar to support with Jill and Makalov. Since Haar doesn't turn up for a while, I'll use Reyson too, mainly so Tormod has someone to support with. That leaves my team with (in order of getting the characters): Ike Oscar Soren Mist Marcia (yes, as much as I hate peggies, I'm gonna use her) Volke Kieran Jill Astrid Makalov Tormod Reyson Haar Anyone I should switch out? |

Lessee... Soren B Ike A Oscar B Kieran A Marcia Mist A Jill B Haar A Makalov B Astrid Tormod A Reyson That works pretty darn well if you ask me. Also, only units that could lag behind are Ike/Soren and Reyson not transformed. You at least get one pair of boots to fix one of the two. EDIT : If you're bent on completing a chain, Rolf fits right between Marcia and Mist. Just a thought << |

I usually give Soren the boots. The extra movement really helps him. EDIT: If I have room, I might bring Stefan in too because he supports with Soren. Yeah, the bonuses aren't too great but any stat increase is better than none at all. EDIT2: Hmmm, that fits well too. I'll think about it. |

Bah. That's not a weird team. I've used Soren, Ilyana, Tormod, Rolf, Mist, Jill, Boyd, Oscar, Nephenee, Mia, AND Zihark in the same run. Seriously, I use a VERY large amount of units in FE9. I'm never entirely sure why people always limit themselves to such a tiny amount of units. <_<;;; |

I think I've been running an odd team, honestly. The staples being Mist(as an offensive backup to Muarim; mine has crack stats, don't ask), Rolf, Tormod, Muarim (being my all-star), Rhys, and Nephenee. It was on a whim that I stopped leveling Oscar mid-game, but he was falling behind Kieran. Largo, Calill, Ike (yes, really; his stats were sucking until I started BEXP abusing him), Zihark, Stefan, Kieran, Soren, Haar, Reyson, and Tanis being less important and interchangable whenever needed. I support Rolf, though. He's scarily kickass for a kid that tiny. Good live bait, too (big brother Boyd being better at that, though). If you're not on Hard, or if your Soren starts sucking, consider phasing in Calill. She's a good character to use those long-range tomes that you'll be stuck with by the last five chapters or so, and she doesn't lose much AS, if any. (Tormod's good for that, too, but he could wind up too slow to double with them. Not that Soren could, either, under most circumstances.) Her MOV doesn't match well with Tormod's though, despite them supporting... |
