Fire Emblem 10, North American Release: "Several other new features enhance the Wii version: The game now supports 16:9 widescreen (newly added for North America), giving players a better view of the battlefield. Trailer cinemas have been added in key sequences to help add to the cinematic and epic feel of the game. A new "Battle Save" function allows novice players to create a permanent save mid-battle. This feature is new to the Fire Emblem series and is designed to make the game more accessible to new gamers. Additionally, players have a number of controller options, from using the Wii Remote™ on its own (vertically or horizontally) to using a Classic Controller™ or even a Nintendo GameCube™ controller (for fans who were familiar with the controls from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance)." Also, it doesn't seem likely that we will get a maniac mode. Thoughts? |

Yeah, it's possible to get screwed and have to restart your entire game on FE4 if you save every turn. Saving at castles FTW. Anyways...perm-save feature, and no Maniac Mode? Bastards. Why must the Japanese think we're so dumb over here in the Western Hemisphere? |

My intent was to illustrate a new player's frustration with such an event, and my own dislike of difficulty that stems totally from randomness. Because it's not difficulty at all- chrono said it best. Those are flukes. But there should be -some- sort of safeguard against them to prevent premature hair loss. Long story short, adding a save function won't add or detract difficulty from the game- because it's not that difficult in the first place. If they were aiming for that, they'd beef up the enemies or (God forbid) put back in enemy reinforcements that move the minute they arrive. Which, I suppose, is what hard mode is for, where in game saves might be more of a burden than anything else. |

I'm arguing with someone on GFAQs right now who, of all things to think, believes Shining Force is more difficult than Fire Emblem because FE's difficulty is "Too cheap". It doesn't work like that. >_>; He also seems to think every other hit is a critical, seeing as he says, and I quote: "But of what non-import FE games I have played, they struck me as shallow and easy...in the sense that you had to remove the luck factor (criticals) from mattering - hence, the ubertank character who survives criticals for you." I mean, has anyone tried an FE9 Hard-Maniac Ike solo? It doesn't work out so well. |

Addar's right. The presence of a critical system and luck in and of itself isn't a problem; the fact that there's no way to avoid losing time and the sense of "omfg why the hell now" that it engenders in the player is. It's not like savescumming's going to make the game any easier for the dedicated players, not in this era of frozen reinforcements and enemies with nerf guns and rolled-up socks. Really, if losing the challenge no-saves added to the game is going to put you off FE, why the hell are you still playing the moment after you picked up Holsety, or they cut Maniac mode? |
