(OOC: Jym, if you need, I can edit anything in this to make it work for what you want to write.)
"Boss, do we have to go all the way down to Lycia?"
"If you don't mind staying back here and starving, then no, I guess we don't."
The dark-haired myrmidon sighed, slumping a little as she trudged along on the frozen dirt road. "It's an awful long way, though...it'll take ages...."
"And your whining makes it seem longer," her commander snapped. "Knock it off and keep walking."
A rather varied group of nine people was making a long trek from Ilia to Lycia, bound together by a single goal: Money. They happened to be mercenaries, who also happened to have been promised a large sum of gold for completing a mission. A mission that required them to walk, ride, or crawl all the way to some small, backwater village in Ostia, just to have to begin the real work when they got there.
If they hadn't needed every penny of what they were being paid, Karon would have laughed in his employer's face. As it was, he was out in the snow, in late winter, in Ilia, on a barely-visible dirt road, listening to one of his subordinates whine incessantly.
It was insane.
"Thylora, how far are we from the border?" the assassin asked of the woman beside him, not sure if he really wanted to know or not. Thylora studied the map in her hands and the scenery around her.
"I would estimate, judging by the mountains and what I believe to be an outpost some distance ahead, that unless I am mistaken, which is unlikely but possible, we are approximately---"
"Get to the point already!"
"I apologize, sir," Thylora said. "I believe we have about one or two miles before we reach Sacae."
"Then how much longer until we get to Ostia?"
Thylora put the map away. "That would depend on whether or not we acquire a better form of transportation, sir."
That question couldn't be answered until they managed to make it to Bulgar, more than likely. With whatever strife Ilia's politicians had managed to start this time, none of the usual trade caravans were able to pass in or out of the nation, for unknown reasons. Normally one of them would be more than happy to let a few mercenaries make use of their horses and/or wagons in exchange for a little gold and protection from highwaymen, but nooooooooooo, there was no such luck to be had now.
"...I bet Mu's having a great time down there, in the steaming, warm, hot, heat-filled land of Ostia...." Natasha, the myrmidon, was saying driftily in the background.
"Ostia isn't that hot," Karon said, rolling his eyes. "Quit your whining."
"I'm not whining," the teen said. "But seriously, Boss, isn't Ostia, like, a whole lot warmer than Ilia? Don't they have mountains that aren't covered in snow the whole year? And flowers that bloom before spring even starts--wouldn't that be weird?"
"Go bug Anton if you wanna know about Ostia."
"But you've been to Ostia, too!"
"Yes, I have. Go bug Anton."
"Fine, fine, sorry for being such a pain...."
The time went on, and the border got closer. Close enough that, at some point, Natasha insisted she could see pegasi circling ahead at the outpost on the border. Karon couldn't see a darned thing and figured the myrmidon was wrong, but just in case, he sent one of his mercenaries ahead to see what was going on. Unfortunately, by the time the young soldier that had been sent ahead was running back to the group at full speed, all the rest of them were sure that there were indeed pegasi ahead.
The lad slipped and slid to a stop in the snowy slush, panting like a dog. He snapped to attention as everyone else stared in bemusement. "S-s-s-sir! It's as we f-f-feared--there's t-t-t-trouble ahead!"
"At ease, squirt." Karon rubbed his forehead; this was hardly unexpected, but still the last thing he wanted to hear. Hopefully it wasn't a sign of how the whole mission would go.... "How many are there?"
"How many what, sir?"
"Pegasus knights, dimwit! How many?"
"O-Oh!" Eft, the soldier, shuffled his feet. "Th-there were several! ...I'm not sure exactly how many."
That's reeeeeal helpful.... Aloud, the assassin asked, "Did any of them see you?"
"I don't know, sir."
"Well, did they try to attack you?"
Karon didn't bother asking anything else. As Natasha and the resident priest took Eft aside to try and keep him from hyperventilating, Thylora quietly began developing a strategy.
There was no way around the outpost, that much was certain; the mercenaries could not take a different route without going days out of their way, straining their supplies and bringing the possibility of additional adversities. There was no way they could sneak through, either. A large group would be noticed instantly by someone atop a pegasus. The priest was the only one who might have had a chance, thanks to his white garb, but that still left the other eight mercenaries who, while they could blend in reasonably well in an urban setting, would be as visible in snow as a ripe tomato on the vine.
Although, there was a good chance that their worries were for nothing, and that they could pass through the little station as normal with no trouble at all, being citizens of Ilia, but with the current situation in their homeland, Thylora suspected otherwise....
"We don't have any choice but to go on ahead, do we?" Karon said. Hesitatingly, Thylora nodded.
"Regrettably, I believe that is the case," she murmured. "Perhaps there will be no trouble. All we can do is approach them inconspicuously and hope for the best."
The assassin sighed. "Alright. Everyone, get moving! Try not to look suspicious, but be prepared to fight. And don't do anything stupid!"
With a chorus of affirmative replies, the group continued onward. Ahead, the pegasi were clearly visible, on the ground and in the air as they served to guard the border between Elibe's two northernmost nations....
