Clark The sun was a short way into its downward arc as Clark and the mercenaries made their way back to the Guild. As they walked along, Clark scanned their numbers; he noticed that the company had doubled during the battle. Remarkable. We might climb through the rankings faster than I thought. Finally, the Guild came into sight. Clark opened the door and went inside to sit down in one of the chairs. Melanie put down her paperwork and turned to him. "How'd it go?" "Piece of cake, darlin', piece of cake." One by one, the other mercenaries filed in through the door. Clark called them to sit with him, then stood up and addressed them all. "That was a very well-fought battle, everyone," he began, "those dirtbags didn't know what hit 'em till they were halfway to hell already. I have noticed, though," he changed the tone of his voice, "that there are a lot more of you here now than there were this morning. Those of you who recently joined us, do you care to introduce yourselves?" Clark took his seat and left the floor open to whoever wanted to speak. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Serena seated not too far away. He frowned slightly, but quickly masked it. Something about that girl... |

Jabin After the battle, Jabin had followed the group, and it seemed he wasn't the only one. The man he had talked to before, Clark, asked everyone new to introduce themselves. At first no one stood up, so Jabin took a deep breath and stood. "I guess I'll go first... I'm Jabin. I... I was a proffessor in Lycia, until a few months ago. I've been traveling around Elibe, lately..." He thought to himself, leaving an awkward pause. Maybe they could take me in for a while... I haven't really been eating well since leaving the Lords, since I didn't take much money... ah, why not? "I guess I could use some money now, so I'll help, i-if you'll take me?" |

OOC: *sigh* Since nobody else seems to want to post yet... Clark "Of course, Jabin, we could always use another hand around here." Clark looked around the room at the remaining unfamiliar faces. "If you don't want to introduce yourselves in front of everyone else, that's fine," he said, then added in a sharper tone, "but you'd better be ready for the work we'll be doing. Got it?" |

(OOC: I was actually waiting for Soul to retro-RP, but I can just post now. I...just don't have anything to say :V) Serena whistled softly to herself as she looked over at all the new arrivals. Pretty interesting, to say the least and she was surprised to see how many random people could just show up at a fight. There was that magic user woman who had healed her (she still needed to thank her a little more properly for that), that freaky Crusader with the loud voice and his partner, some other guy with a sword she didn't recognize, that professor that had just introduced himself, and a pair of girls who had snuck in the group as they left the battlefield. Serena frowned to herself as she counted the number of people on her fingers. 'Wow...That's one...two...seven people. Just showing up at one battlefield...a lot of people have free time on their hands to just wander around and join random mercenary groups, I guess. I shouldn't be talking though, since that's what I did too...' She shrugged to herself and sank back into her seat, waiting for the others to speak. Although from the looks of at, a lot of the new arrivals were a lot more experienced in battle than she was. It was kind of worrying, to say the least. She only hoped she didn't lose her spot to someone else. Her stomach growled and she flushed a little. 'Man I'm hungry.' |

Weyler Weyler was made uncomfortable by the new arrivals who had came to his group's aid not long ago. He was barely acquainted with the first few people he had met when he was recruited, and now there were even more strangers present. He sighed, taking the nearest available seat and leaning back in it. Have I even spoken to Clark yet? At this rate, I'll end up practically unknown... I suppose I could always talk with him later. It'd be rude to interrupt now. As he waited for the others to finish their introductions, he thought to himself how he might lay his worries to rest. |

OOC: Okay, thanks for the heads-up, then. Also, Tythanin, I was talking more about the people who wanted to introduce their characters; I wanted to get all of the intros out of the way ASAP (for the ones who wanted to, anyway) so we could get back to the RP. Clark Clark looked around impatiently, waiting for someone else to speak up. Serena had mentioned a large, loud man with a soft-spoken female companion, but he saw no sign of the two. It's just as well, he thought, more numbers means more power, but too many people means lowered pay, and at these rates... Clark pulled out the mission specs and checked the second page, which told how much money would be received as a reward. It was a decent amount, but for a group this big it would soon be mere pocket change. Uncomfortable with the awkward social setting Clark sighed and looked stuffed the parchment back into his pack. "That'll be all, then. For those of you with no place to stay, there's an inn a short distance down the way called The Grand Sunset. Tell 'em you're with me, and they'll put you on my tab." Clark left the circle of mercenaries and opened the back door. "I'll be out back if anyone needs me." |

Derran After wrapping up his shoulder, Derran followed his commander outside, eager to meet with him since he hadn't had much of a chance earlier. "Hello, commander, that battle went pretty smoothly." Derran said, he could tell Clark was listening. Derran had an idea. "You seem to be a good soldier and commander, maybe sometime we could spar each other.", Derran said. Derran had always been able to tell a lot about a person by fighting them, he could get to know his commander better this way. Derran waited for an answer from Clark, waiting to see what he would do. |

Clark Clark remembered this one; he'd been the one who had single-handedly taken out the leader of the bandits they had faced today. Now he wants to spar? After thinking it over for a moment, Clark removed his extra belt that held the pouch of magic vials, the jar of pitch, the matches, and his glass box, and placed it near the door, along with the blade on his back. He then entered a small shed adjacent to the Guild and rummaged around a bit until he found two wooden practice swords. Clark exited the shed and tossed a blade in Derran's direction. It landed with a soft thump in a sandy patch a few feet from Derran. Clark tapped the tip of his own practice sword to his forehead in a classic salute, then assumed his fighting stance. "When you're ready," he said, a slight grin creeping up at the corners of his mouth. |

Weyler The mage was about to stand and follow his commander, but another mercenary had beat him to it. Weyler froze, halfway out of his chair, then slowly reseated himself as he watched Derran jog to to the back door to catch up to Clark. He shrugged. Hmmm...could be something important. I'm not up for much talking, anyhow. I could use some rest. He abruptly rose to his feet, chair grating on the floor from the swiftness of his motion. "Excuse me. I think I'll go and take him up on that offer. Good night." Weyler said, addressing no one in particular. He didn't wait around for a response. Quietly shutting the front door of the Guild building behind him, Weyler observed the area in front of him, trying to remember which road he had taken to the place before and if he had noticed any such inn before. "'Down the way'...whatever the hell that means. Ah, no matter. I'd find some way to get lost no matter what the directions..."With that, Weyler strolled down the path leading to the meeting hall's door, frequently looking around and over shoulder to be sure he hadn't missed what he was looking for. |

Serena 'Well, I guess that's it for that. Hmmm...what to do...Better ask the boss for an advance on my pay. I really, really want to eat.' Serena thought to herself as she slowly got to her feet, giving the other mercenaries a smile as she headed over to where she saw Clark exit. One of the other mercenaries had headed over there as well as Serena was curious as to what they would be talking about. She overheard part of the conversation as she came to the door and frowned to herself. 'Sparring? Man we just got back. Oh well. I guess I get to see how they fight, at least.' She leaned against the wall, staying silent as she looked at the two of them. One of them was the captain and the other she recognized as the man who took out the bandit leader before she had a chance to get her hands on him. She nodded to herself...this would be interesting, at least. Just as long as it didn't take too long. |

Clark took off from his starting position and ran at Derran, feinting a slash to his left arm. Myke Me? Introduce myself? I would, but the last time I spoke in a room full of people, people started trying to kill me, so excuse me for sounding paranoid. I'm fairly sure most of these people could take me down... Myke's quiet reflection was interrupted when the man who seemed to be the leader of the group left. Another man- of remarkable skill, he noted- followed him, and then a woman. I suppose it'd be in my best intrest to at least introduce myself to the boss around here. Hard to give orders to an unknown. Myke followed the group of sword users outside, only to be greeted by the sight of the two men sparring. Intresting. These two seem fairly evenly matched. I'd probably be no match for either, but you never know. I could get lucky. Again. |

OOC: Ninjasassin gave me permission to FINISH THE FIGHT *killed by Master Chief for copyright infringement* so I'm not godmoding or anything. Just letting you guys know. >.> Clark Clark had landed a hit, but Derran was more durable than the average swordsman. He lashed out and caught Clark by surprise, knocking him off balance. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Derran lunged forward and hit Clark full-force in the chest, knocking him off his feet backwards. Still, Clark managed to control his toppling and still landed on his feet after a slight skid. He threw himself at Derran with a new fervor. The two slashed and blocked repeatedly, dancing in a serpentine fashion among the grass and sand. The clacking of the wooden swords echoed as night began to fall around the Guild. The two locked each others' blade at the hilt and gritted their teeth, neither capable of making the other budge. Finally, Clark shoved his hand upward, causing both blades to follow suit, and kicked Derran square in the sternum, then followed it up with a deft blow to his left thigh. Moments later they were deadlocked again, though now each fighter was giving and receiving more bruises than the last time. After creating a slight opening, Derran threw his weight into his shoulder and knocked Clark several feet backward; this time, Clark did not land so gracefully. Derran pursued him, but Clark rolled to the side. I've gotta end this quick, thought Clark. He's wearing out, but so am I. Taking a step back to prepare himself, Clark threw his sword in a spinning arc high in the air. Derran's eyes followed it for a moment, but that was all the time Clark needed; wasting no time, he sprinted forward and swept his leg out in an arc along the ground, knocking Derran's feet out from under him. Clark jumped back, then leapt into the air, grabbed his sword, and crashed down onto Derran's chest with it. Derran's face showed obvious signs of pain more severe than the strike itself would have caused. Clark examined the spot and saw scar tissue. He's been hit there before...dammit. Tossing the wooden blade aside, Clark carefully hoisted Derran up and over his shoulder, then carried him back inside. "Melanie should have something to take care of that," he told Derran reassuringly, "she's always fixin' me up after a good brawl." Clark saw Serena and one of the recruits who had shown up during the last battle sitting outside. They were watching us spar. Seems like they got their money's worth. Clark passed them without making eye contact, his focus centered on getting Derran healed. Back at the front desk, Melanie pulled out a pack of vulneraries and gave them to Clark. "Give him one to drink, and pour the rest on the wounded area," she instructed. "Make sure to rub it in. Oh, and don't forget to take some yourself, tough guy," she added. "Thanks, Mother," Clark grumbled. |

Serena Serena watched carefully as the two swordsmen dueled, analyzing their movements and patterns. She doubted the boss would lose (after all, he was the boss), but she had to admit that other guy got in some pretty good hits. She let out a whistle at the end of the fight, clapping softly as she saw Clark land the finishing strike on his fallen opponent. She thought tossing your weapon away like he did was kind of reckless, but it did bring about results and who was she to complain about another person's fight. "Nice one, boss...Pretty slick." Serena said to Clark as he passed. She wondered if she should offer any help, but then she remembered she knew nothing about healing. 'Eh, I'm sure someone else can take care of that...although better not ask the boss about an advance now. Might seem a little callous after that whole practice fight. Besides, he probably has more important things to think about besides the state of my stomach.' With her mind changed, Serena was ready to leave the guild hall when she spotted that female magic user from before. She immediately walked up to her and held a hand, giving her a wide smile as well. "Sorry, I don't think we've been introduced...the battlefield is a pretty hectic place. Anyway, I'm Serena and I didn't really thank you properly for that help you gave me, so...thanks! Granted, the whole battle ended a little bit after that, but not having to walk around with a bleeding wound was nice." She let out a small laugh and grinned sheepishly. 'Hope she doesn't think I'm too weird for thanking her for a bit of healing.' |

Derran Derran got up, surprised. He was not used to being defeated, but then again it was the boss he had fought. He hit that shoulder hard, Derran thought, administering the vulnerary. My shoulder seems to be getting hit quite a lot today. Derran had more of an idea of how his boss fought and led though, and that was worth the hit. Derran glanced at his shoulder, It should still take a night's reast to heal, even with vulneraries. I might as well get some sleep now, we will probably have to do another mission tommorrow. And with that Derran went to sleep, on the spot, he was used to sleeping in odd places. |

Myke ... Oh my. That was quick. I certianly wouldn't have ben able to take that beating, but then I don't have any prior wounds to be caught. Yet. Impressed by the boss' swift work, Myke allowed himself to applaud. Only briefly, though. He was supposed to silently observe. Nothing more. In time, perhaps he would speak and act more freely among these people. However, he had spent the last two years travelling across the continent whilst lurking in the shadows, having no-one to talk to but himself. While he had enjoyed the lack of company at the time, seeing so many people together interacting with each other made him miss the old days. No. You aren't that person anymore, Mike thought to himself, you locked the door to your heart when you ran away. The key has long since been lost, and you have only yourself to blame. Now, you can go back and find that key, forge a new key, attempt to break the door, or simply leave civilisation now and be done with it. Which will it be? Only you can make that decision, since you seem so incapable of asking for help and advice. |

Serena Serena waved goodbye to Evelyn as she left the inn and was about to leave herself when she saw Clark coming over. 'Hey, maybe I could get that advance after all.' It was at that moment that her stomach let out a loud growl and Serena flushed in embarassment. "Hehe, sorry boss, the only thing I've had to eat the whole day was a piece of cheese someone else was kind enough to offer me. It lasted throughout the battle...kind of, but my stomach kind of wants more. Speaking of which...uh, mind if I get an advance on my pay? I used all my money getting here and freelance work has been pretty rare for a wandering swordsman." She looked hopefully at him, trying her best to make those puppy eyes that she heard were so effective at getting what you wanted. Then she remembered that he was about to say something. "Oh yeah, uh, what were going to say before my stomach rudely interrupted?" |

Clark "And that's Ralheim's armory, best place to buy weaponry around here...oh, and there's Lamar's apothecary," Clark said as he and Serena walked, pointing this way and that and naming each location. "The man's got a knack for finding rare trinkets. Oh, here we are!" The pair stopped in front of a two-story building of mud and wood with a hanging sign swaying in the wind that read "Tavern d'Tauskeli" in faded red paint. Clark opened the door for Serena and followed her in. All around them were the sounds of conversation between friends, raucous laughter, and the occasional short scuffle. Clark and Serena sat down at a long table full of regulars. One of the serving wenches came over to them and greeted them cheerfully. "Oy, Clark! Good to have yeh back 'round these parts! Ain't seen yeh in more'n a few days, thought maybe them wolves'd gotten to yeh!" She let out a hearty chuckle. "Ah, I see yeh've brought a ladyfriend, 'bout time, too!" Clark rolled his eyes. Serena "Ooooh..." Serena said appreciatively as she walked around with Clark, smiling as she took in the sights and sounds of the city. She really appreciated this special tour and she kept each of the locations in her mind so she could visit later. She planned on staying here for a looooong time and it'd be good to become friends with the shopkeeps. She stopped in front of the resturant that Clark had led her too and like a classic gentleman, Clark opened the door for her. Giving him a smile and nod in thanks, she stepped in the resturant and Clark led her to a table filled with people that appeared to be regulars. One of the servers came and cracked a couple of jokes with Clark before asking what they wanted. Serena wondered what this place was good with, but saw another guy eating what seemed to be beef and some assorted vegetables. "Uh...I guess I'll have what that guy is having. And a beer." Serena said. |

Clark "I'll have the usual, Marcie," Clark said casually. Moments later, two frothing mugs of beer were placed on the table in front of them. Clark idly sipped from his mug. After wiping off any excess foam, he turned to Serena. "So tell me, Serena, how did you come to be in this area?" |

Serena "Hmmm?" Serena paused, a piece of beef hovering right before her mouth. "Oh...just wandering, really. I was part of a mercenary group that had been based around Lycia...uh, forgot the name, but we did some odd jobs here and there. It was fun stuff, but I just felt like wandering to explore the rest of the continent. Handed in my resignation notice and everything, packed what little belongings I had, and hit the road." She popped the piece of beef in her mouth and chewed several times before swallowing. "Ah, yeah...uh, after that I guess I hit the plains. Sacae, was it? Yeah, ran into some trouble there, but managed to stay alive and fill my pockets a bit as well. Um...well, that's really just my story. Wandering across Elibe and staying alive through luck and skill, I guess." She lets out a little laugh and raises her beer mug. "Here's to the future, boss." With that, she drinks until the mug is half-empty and slams the mug down on the table, letting out a satisfied sigh. "Ah....that's good stuff. Thanks for showing me this place...I'll definitely have to keep it in mind." |

Clark Clark swallowed the mouthful of meat and potatoes he had been chewing, then raised his mug as well. "To the future." He quickly finished shoveling down his food and drained his mug, then waited for Serena to do the same. Clark dug around in his pack and produced enough coins for payment and a tip for Marcie, then stood up. "I'm going to head back to the inn," he said to Serena. "Would you like me to show you where it is? |

Serena "Mmm, sure, that'd be helpful." Serena said as she wiped the last bit of gravy off of her mouth. "Man, you've been doing so much for me today, I better show that I'm worth it on the field, huh?" She laughed and let Clark lead her to the inn, where she gave Clark a small bow. "Thanks a lot of the tour. I really had fun....kinda like a date, huh?" She laughed again and slapped him on the shoulder before walking into the inn and getting her room key. "I'll see you tomorrow, boss!" |

Clark "Yes...good night," Clark responded. Once Serena's door had closed, Clark heard someone call to him from the lobby. "Oho, what's this?" chuckled the innkeeper. "Methinks my dear boy Clark has become smitten with yon lass, he has!" Am I really so secluded that being seen with a woman once gives people these ideas? "Laugh all you want, Jacques," he responded coolly, "but she's working with me now, and needed a place to stay." "Well, I appreciate the business, laddybuck," Jacques said, "but make sure the little lady doesn't work you too hard, eh? Wahaha!" "Good night, you perverted old man," Clark said with a wave as he walked down the hall to his room. Once through the door, Clark set down his belongings, removed his boots, and flopped onto his bed. Beset by thoughts of everything that had happened that day, Clark had trouble falling asleep. Finally, his eyelids became too heavy, and he sank into deep sleep. It was cold and dark everywhere, with no sign of light. The only thing that wasn't black in this strange world was a small ball of red in the distance. Clark walked towards it, but before he could get close, a huge wyvern crashed down onto the ground in front of him. Chunks of skin and muscle were missing all around, and the pieces that remained hung on like decaying tattered rags. There were no eyes, there was no breath passing through its mouth, just a fearsome skeletal beast blocking his path. From its back came a familiar voice that said, "Hello, Isaac. It's been a while..." A sharp pain shot through his shoulder as he was pinned to the ground by the rider's lance. The wyvern moved so that it was above him, its dead mouth inches above his head. The jaws opened wide, exposing the rotting teeth inside, and... Clark awoke in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, panting heavily. He felt his shoulder but could not find any evidence of piercing; his head and neck had been untouched as well. Sighing heavily, Clark rolled over and fell back asleep, unbothered by further nightmares until morning. |

OOC: *revives kitten* Clark Clark woke up even earlier than he had the previous day. After preparing his gear, he left the Grand Sunset and headed down to the apothecary. During these hours of twilight, the shop was run by an apprentice. Clark was a regular customer, but the apprentice didn't recognize him. He was visibly nervous, as though one mistake would get him fired. Strolling right up to him, Clark said, "Is my shipment in yet, Sam?" "H-how do you know my n-n-name?" he stammered. "I come here pretty often, and Hodge mentioned you in passing conversation," Clark replied. "Did Mr. Lamar s-say anything good?" "I know he'll be saying much better things of you if you can go find my shipment." "Oh! R-right, I'll go get it. Your name was...?" "Kallen. Clark Kallen. Should be a big box of flora lumena." Sam walked to the back and pulled a box off of the shelves. "Looks like we got it last night," he said, examining the package carefully. He set it down on the counter in front of Clark. Clark gave him payment and took the box. "Thanks, Sam. Give my regards to Hodge." After leaving the apothecary, Clark headed to the Guild. He wanted to get there early to make sure he could give everyone one of what was in the box before they left for their next mission. Melanie greeted him with another yawn, then jerked her thumb in Derran's direction. "Your friend slept like a baby all night," she said. "How old his he? I wouldn't mind waking up to that face every morning." "He's a little young for you." "Well, that Serena is a little young for you, mister." "It's not like that!" "Says the man who bought her dinner and showed her the town." Clark threw his arms up. "I give up." Melanie chuckled, then handed him three pieces of parchment. "Specs are a little longer this time. It seems the villages you saved thought you did such a good job that they now want you to tackle the bandits' stronghold. Can't say I blame 'em, bandits are vile thugs," she said, making a face. "Anyway, the third page is a map of the hideout. It was made before the bandits took over, so it's likely some details have changed, but the main layout is the same." Clark looked through the papers and stopped at the reward. "Wow. This is a lot more than I thought we'd be getting." Melanie winked at him. "Hard work does pay off, Mr. Merc." "Aye, that it does," Clark responded, "or so it would seem." Clark took the papers and sat down at one of the chairs. He set the papers and box down on the chair next to him, then opened the box, which was full of white flowers that gave off a small amount of light. Clark pulled one out and looked at it, then placed it, along with a few more, into his pack, then waited for the others to arrive. |

OOC: Moar bandits? :D Also, for the purposes of this post, anything in lightgreen italics is Myke, white italics are just a recount of the nightmare, and any other colours are spoileriffic characters from Myke's past. Myke Myke's sleep was less than sound, just as it had been for the last two years. Now, though, his restlessness was brought on merely by nightmares as opposed to the very real prospect of danger. "I'm not going to ask again, boy. Where is she?" "I don't know! And even if I did know, I certainly wouldn't tell the likes of you!" "Oh, so you do know... Now talk before I kill you!" "Oh, like you did the last time I refused to tell you something? I walked away then, and I'll walk away now." The man's style of interrogation was effective only when dealing with the easily intimidated, and those who worried about turning their backs on a maniac with an axe. The boy was neither- his secret mattered more now than even his life- if he died, the secret was lost. He knew this, but he knew the man didn't, and that was the part that scared him. He knew that this man would gladly kill him simply for working his henchmen over. "Do you honestly think you can protect her forever, kid? If you don't talk, we kill you. Then we find someone else who WILL talk, hunt the girl down, and get what we want from her. We always get what we want." "There's a first time for everything." With that, the boy got out of the chair he was sat at- there was no need for chains, the man being so threatening to most that they stayed in the chair simply to avoid provoking him. On some days, a prisoner walking away may have been lucky. The boy was not. The man had had enough of being made a mockery by this mere child. His soldiers were gone; he himself had scars from this child's desperate flailing. He swung his axe menacingly, and let loose an undescribable cry, alerting everybody in the compound as to the situation. That was certainly intelligent of you, the boy thought, aware that his chances of escape were slim, provoke the rest of them while you're at it, you flaming moron! The boy ran through the compound, doing his best to escape the many people left trying to kill him. However, several hundred people chasing one boy generally meant that somewhere along the line you were going to get caught. "Hmm hmm hmm, did you honestly think you could escape us? How amusing." "I didn't think I'd escape without a fight, but I must say I expected to last a little longer." "Do not lie to me, boy. Vassarin may not be able to read minds, but I am. And it would be such a shame to kill the only one who can give us what he want, wouldn't it?" "Yeah, a real shame. Unfortunately for you, I'm not really in the frame of mind to tell secrets right now. If I was, I'd have told this "Vassarin". The boy clasped at his rapier more tightly now. The challenge had been made. The woman before him- for it was indeed a woman- readied a spell. Then the roar came. A mighty roar, far greater than even Vassarin's cry. People started panicking, and the boy used this diversion to escape. He was pleased with this turn of fortune- luck not being a word in his vocabulary anymore, unless said luck was ill. But then, he saw the being that had produced such a roar, and realised that his luck had gone from bad to worse, and then from worse to rock bottom. At this, Myke had woken up, not wanting to recall that beast, or even that night. No matter how hard he tried to hide it, that night he had almost given in to that group's demands. He had almost told them exactly what they wanted to hear. He had almost co-operated with them, the group that had taken his family, friends and home away from him. No, I can't think like that. I can't let that show. I can't let her down now. I've held on to this secret, the key to her life for two years now. They haven't got me yet. They won't get me now. I was still weak then, relying on my misfortune to befall them as well. Now, I'm stronger, capable of making my own fortune, and I can fight them without relying on chance. But I can't fight on an empty stomach, and I can't buy food without money. Guess it's back to work I go. Who knows, maybe they'll have given up by now- I certainly haven't seen them in a while. On this oh-so-positive note, Myke wandered downstairs. The inn was already bustling; a sign that today was going to be eventful. However, many eyes turned to him as he walked; mostly with good reason. Not only was he a stranger in town, but he had the garb of a seasoned traveller (mostly due to the now battered and worn armour and cloak that had been given to him on his fourteenth birthday in a strangely prophetic move by his family, as soon after this whole ordeal had started), yet still looked like a young boy- which he was, still only sixteen. What was even stranger, though, was his apparent inability to talk. Some said that he was born that way (false), and some thought that he had been cursed (still false). Other still thought that he simply refused to talk (true), though these were probably the few that had heard him tell the inkeeper who's tab to put him on. Myke walked down the street back to the only other building in town that he could recognise; the guild. Even now, he sensed that people were already talking about him behind his back. Lovely. The rumours will start flying soon, and Elmine knows the last thing I need is THEM hunting me again. He stepped into the guild, waving to anyone that had said hello- while talking wasn't something he was very good at anymore, seeing as he only talked if absolutely necessary, he still believed in being polite and acknowledging the people who acknowledged him,as tehy were now decidedly few. He saw the boss sat down, with a box and some important looking papers on the chair next to him. Noting another empty chair next to that containing the papers and box, and being a decidedly curious person- despite all promises he had made to mind his own business- he sat down next to the papers, glancing over at them. Hey, it's a job. More bandits, and only low-key ones to boot. Excellent. Noteriety is not high on my priorities right now. Earning some gold here and there for the purposes of food, however, is. |

Weyler Weyler entered shortly after Myke, looking a little more at ease than his last time in the building. He paused to yawn and stretch in the doorway. It had taken him longer than he expected to find the inn by himself. Eh, at least I know for next time. Looking around, he noticed there were only afew others in the room: Clark, Derran, and one of the strangers who had thrown their lot in with Clark the day before. "Ah, I'm earlier than I thought, I see," said Weyler."Should've rested a while longer..." He turned his head to the newcomer as he aproached his commander. The stranger's armor had a worn look to it- not broken, but as if its wearer had experienced much. The squire met Weyler's gaze, his expression unchanging. A stoic one. Weyler addressed him with a smile. "Hello. Welcome to the group." He stopped a few feet away from Clark. The mercenary lookd busy fiddling around with some papers and a box. Must be positon-related, Weyler thought, none of my business. " Excuse me, Commander, but you wouldn't happen to know where my...superior is?" The slight pause between words had something of a sarcastic feel to it. "I'm finding it rather difficult already to answer to someone whose attendence is, hmmm, sporadic." Something odd about him, defintely. Was I really just hearing things that time before...? "Don't get the wrong impression of me. I'm not doubting your call to put him in charge. I'm just concened he might not be so responsible..." ' |

Serena Serena actually woke up way before daybreak, simply unused to how comfortable everything felt. Her belly was full, the bed was nice and soft unlike the hard ground, and she was nice and warm instead of freezing her ass off. Truly, her luck had taken a turn for the better recently. Not only did she land herself a job as a mercenary, but she got shown around town and treated to dinner. She giggled to herself as she turned in the bed. She definitely would be staying here for a while. She quickly fell back to sleep after tossing and turning for a couple of more minutes and soon enough it was daybreak. She let out a huge yawn and blinked dazedly around her bed, reluctant to leave what felt so comfortable. With a groan, she slid out of bed and stretched for a while before getting dressed and grabbing her sword. 'Ah...wonder if the boss has any new jobs for us today?' Serena thought to herself as she gave the innkeeper a wave and a smile. She spent some time visiting the stores that Clark had pointed out, introducing herself and promising to come visit later. She spotted a beautiful sword hanging on the wall of Ralheim's armory and promised that it would someday be hers. With her walk around town finished, she headed over to the Guild to see if anyone else would be there. There was Clark (of course), that mage from earlier...Weyler was his name, and some new guy that had probably joined the party in the last battle. "Good morning all! Hope you're all feeling fine." Serena said in greeting as she headed over to one of the chairs, curious about that box of papers. She picked up the papers from the box. "Hope you don't mind if I take a peek." Looking through them, a smile broke over her face. "Heeey, bandits again? Friends of those guys from before, huh? This should be fun...and wow, that's some reward. Hopefully everyone else gets here quick so we can start. I've been itching for some action the moment I woke up." She placed the papers back in the box and dragged a chair over, waiting to see if anyone would show up. |

The mage walked over to the wall, grabbed a chair, and placed it closer to the others as Serena had done, seating himself afterwards. "Well, to the best of my knowledge, Serena, bandits are all we deal with. At least, that's how it was with my old Guild work...I'm not entirely sure how things'll go now." He looked to Clark again."Commander, you've a better idea of what the assignments ought to be than I do. Do you know if there's anything else we'll deal with? OOC: Dammit, where is everybody?! >.> Clark "Well, Weyler, it depends on a lot of things," Clark began. "We're a team with virtually no reputation to precede us, so other veteran bands of mercenaries will likely get the higher-end jobs. It also depends on when work needs to be done. Granted, there's pretty much always something going wrong around here," Clark said with a grin, "so we could end up guarding merchants, aiding militias, quelling riots...the list goes on." With any luck, that'll be the worst of our troubles... |

Alec "...The list goes on." Virtually no reputation, huh? Sounds perfect. I need to disappear for a while... Alec moved away from the window where he had been listening and towards the building's entrance. He waited until the man in charge paused, and then waltzed slowly to a chair in the back of the room where the group was congregated. Not wanting to interrupt, he sat down, crossed his left leg over his right, and folded his arms over his chest. He tried to ignore the quizzical glances by looking only towards the man who had been speaking earlier, and eventually the eyes turned back towards their original focus of attention. I'll speak to him when he's done. Not that I haven't made a sufficiently awkward entrance or anything. |

Weyler "Ah, I see...well, the variety will be nice." His eyes darted to the side, hearing footsteps from the back of the room. The man hadn't come close enough for Weyler to seem him that way, so he had to look over his shoulder to get a glimpse. The new stranger was a cavalier, by the look of his armor's design. He was young-looking, but not nearly as much as some of the others. Say, my superior, for example. I'd say he falls somewhere between Clark and myself, age-wise. Just from appearances. Hmmm, and he's here before some of the others. Ought to make a nice impression. He would've said something to the man, but he felt that was that it'd be improper. He attempted to bring an end to the topic, so Clark would direct his attention to the potential newest member. "That satisfies my question. Thank you, Commander." |

(OoC: Sorry for not RPing yesterday, I was having some troubles.) Jabin Jabin yawned and sat up, stretching. He had spent much of the night writing new books of magic for himself, sketching the necessary runes to hold his fire and thunder magic, so he was a little tired. Still, he pulled the blinds in his room back to let the sun in and wake him up a little. The room had an old mirror in it, so he was able to look at himself for the first time in months. He had undone his ponytail, so his deep green hair that betrayed his Sacaen roots fell around his face, which was rather dirty. He even had a short beard. He couldn't help but laugh. Hmm, not exactly scholarly. Guess that's what I get for roughing it for so long... Taking some time to clean up he bathed and made sure to clean his face. As he tied his hair back, he decided to leave the beard. I kinda like it, to be honest... Looking back in the mirror, he liked the way he cleaned up. He walked out of the inn and to the guild feeling refreshed. When he walked in, he found there were several people there, including Clark, but not the boy he had heard was commander. He smiled and looked around. "Hello, everyone. We're starting nice and early, I take it?" |

Hopefully its a followup to the previous bandit mission, he thought, that way I will be sure to get information about my brother, and my past. Derran waited for a reply. With any luck it looks like this mercenary group will stay in business for quite some time. Derran thought hopefully. |

(OOC: A bit retroactive. Finally got some inspiration to write. <_<;;) Brianna Brianna had gone straight to the inn that night, drained of energy from the fight. Turning down a bath and hot food, she quickly undressed and fell back onto the bed, curling up and closing her eyes. However, it wasn’t long before she was tossing and turning, Brianna whimpered softly as a familiar nightmare settled over her, creeping into her mind once again… 1, 2, 3, throw… 1, 2, 3 throw… a man throws his little girl higher and higher into the sky as she giggles with delight. Catching her in gentle hands, he rubs his nose against her cheek as she squirmed. ”Again! Again!” “Okay, once last time.” 1, 2, 3, throw… 1, 2, 3… drop. The girl lands on the grass with a dull thud, wailing her outrage. How could her dad have dropped her like that? Picking herself up, she walks over to her father, who had fallen at the same time as the girl. He was lying so still on the grass, like he’d fallen asleep. ”Papa, why did you drop me? Papa?” Reaching out, she pushes at him with her tiny hands, trying to wake him. It wasn’t like Papa to sleep so deeply, not in the middle of playing. ”Papa? Wake up, Papa, no sleep. Papa, Papa, why won’t you play?” A woman comes to see why the girl is making so much noise and screams, causing people to come running. They gather round the girl and the man, looking to see what has happened. After a moment, a local physician places his fingers on the man’s neck for a while before pulling them away and whispering sad tidings in the woman’s ear as she breaks down in violent sobs. All while the girl sits by her papa’s side, shaking his arm and trying to wake him. A member of the group tries to take her away, but the girl wriggles free and runs back to her father, crying out for him. ”Papa? Papa, wake up, please Papa, wake up. Papa! Papa!” “PAPA!” Bolting upright, Brianna yelled out before she could stop herself. Her face was covered in sweat and her heart was pounding so hard she thought it might break free from her chest. Forcing herself to lie back on the bed, she closed her eyes and forced herself to breathe more calmly. After a while her heart slowed back down to normal and her breathing grew less harsh. It was a nightmare she had had a number of times over the years, but it never lost the grip it held on her; the reliving of the moment her father died and her world had been shattered. It had been 15 years since that dreadful day but she could still remember it well. Could still feel her father’s lifeless body as she pushed and poked at it, desperately trying to wake him, but his sleep was one that no one wakes from and eventually she was dragged away, kicking and screaming, still calling for her beloved papa… she'd grieved and mostly recovered from the trauma of losing her father, but she knew she'd probably keep having the nightmares for years to come. Getting up, Brianna walked over to the window and saw that the sun had come up, the dawn sky beautiful in it’s wonderful variety of colours, the colours that would fade into blue as the sun rose higher yet. Putting on her armour, she slid her finger along the edge of the point of the lance, berating herself for letting it dull. Soldier rule number 1; always keep your weapon in great condition, it’ll save your life in battle. Vowing to go to the armoury and fix it up soon, she finished getting ready. Her eyes were bright and shining, her face clean and no dark circles lurked beneath her eyelids. There was no evidence left that she’d had a bad night. A genuine smile lifted her face as she thought of the next fight to come, and she bounded out of the inn, giving perfunctory thanks to the innkeeper and a promise to return the next night. Humming to herself, she walked once again into the mercenary guild and sat down. She brought yet more cheese out of her pocket and nibbled a little on it, not particularly in the mood for making small talk. She just wanted to know about the next mission, she waited for the boss to tell them what was going to happen next. (OOC: Whee, crappy. But I’m tired so it’ll have to do. Feel free to have your character talk to her if you want.) |

Alec "Hm? What, do you want I should stand up?" Alec scratched at the back of his neck, clearly uncomfortable with the prospect of speaking in such a situation. "Well," he began slowly, after rising to his feet, "I would love to join you all." He shoved one hand into his pocket and rested the other on the hilt of his sword. "My name is Alec -" Not your real surname! "Stavros." His uncle's name was the first that came to mind, and it seemed to fit. It was ordinary enough not to draw attention, yet not exactly forgettable. Alec shifted awkwardly from foot to foot - he wasn't too good at discussing himself. "Is there, ah, some sort of form I have to fill out?" ((Bleh.)) |

Evelyn Evelyn strolled into the guild giving a small nod to her fellow employees, a cheery wave to Serena and a quick glare to the newcomer of the group. Passing by Clark she stopped and whispered to him, "Don't worry about the mission specs, I was able to listen in on you all from the roof. However, I want you to atleast keep a watch on that newcomer guy, Commander. I spotted him sneaking around the windows before I came in, but he doesn't seem that threatening. However you can never be too careful." Evelyn continued on and sat down in one of the chairs. "Hello everyone, I'm glad we have some more work to do today. By the way, has anybody seen the Sub Commander? Unless he's somehow hiding in a box or something, I have no idea where he could be at..." she asked to nobody in particular. |

Clark I wanted to wait until more people showed up...still, it can't be helped if they're late. They'll just have to get caught up later. "Today's job, everyone," Clark said, addressing all present, "is going to land us with some familiar enemies. We've been hired to take down the bandits in their stronghold near the villages from yesterday. As you might expect, the foes we will face will be much stronger, as their leader will probably be protected by the finest fighters among them. The plan is simple." Clark laid out the floor plan for the hideout on the table in front of the chairs. "We will enter here," he said, pointing to a doorway, "and systematically make our way through each room. I want no corner left unchecked, no chest left unopened, no stone left unturned as we go. This will make a rear attack impossible for the enemy, and we will slowly force them back against their own walls." Clark got up and picked up the box. "I want each of you to take these," he said, pulling a glowing white flower out for each mercenary present. "These are Lumen flowers," Clark explained. "Keep these safe at all times, and make sure the leaves are intact." After making sure that everyone had gotten one, Clark took a brown sack off of Melanie's counter and laid it on the table. "Gentlemen, I present to you the fruits of our labor." With a tug on the string that bound the sack, Clark opened it and revealed the contents: their payment. Clark doled out each fighter's cut, then pulled the string taut so that the remaining gold would be safe until the others arrived. "And you," Clark said, turning to Alec, "you can fight with us for as long as you like. You'll get paid for each job you do, and you'll receive all the benefits of being a member of this band. Presently, there are..." Clark paused to think. "...Um...none. But hey, at least you'll get paid." Clark nodded curtly in Evelyn's direction to assure her that he understood what she said and that he would remain on his guard. |

Weyler With a look of surprise and amusement, Weyler turned to face the sage who had come to join them. He was about to speak, until Clark had risen from his seat and began addressing the group. The mage waited until the commander had finished to approach the sage. Tucking the Lumen Flower away in his jacket pocket, he walked up to Evelyn and struck up a conversation. "Ah, nearly forgot I wasn't the only spellcaster anymore! Suddenly I don't feel so bad...I was a little worried I'd be the only one serving under the Sub Commander-" The way he abruptly stopped talking suggested he was pausing mid-sentence, for emphasis or to recall something important he had to say. However, he was merely distracted by Evelyn's comment on the cavalier who had entered, and as he spoke, he couldn't resist catching another glimpse of the stranger. Perhaps he was a suspicious character, after all. Weyler wasn't one to jump to conclusions or make such judgments, so he paid no more attention to the matter and addressed Evelyn's concern. "Er...we were just speaking about that...seems no one's seen Chris around since yesterday. Do you think something could have happened to him?" His brow furrowed. "I was rather impressed with his performance yesterday. He tackled quite a few of those outlaws by himself. Could be personal business, I suppose...but in that case it'd be best not to look any further into the matter..." Weyler let the sentence drag on, slightly reddening as an awkward silence ensued. "Err...I'm sorry. Probably boring you with all of this, letting my mouth run and whatnot..." |

Serena "Heeeey, pretty flower. Where should I put it..." Serena murmurs to herself as she accepts the flower that Clark handed to her. Turning it softly in her hands, she decided to keep it safe in one of her bags, letting the flower itself stick out of the sack while the stem and the leaves were inside. Her eyes then lighted up as she saw her payment and she gave Clark a deep bow in thanks for grabbing her money and stuffing it in another bag, planning on using some of it to grab a nice meal and save the rest for that ever-so-beautiful sword. "Hahaha, perfect. Got some money in my bag, a beautiful flower, a full stomach, and my fingers are just itching to get to work." Serena sighed happily to herself as she sank back into her chair, just savoring the feeling. "Sometimes life just gives you everything you need...better enjoy this for as long as I can." |

Weyler "Ah, that's true. No odd thing to oversleep now and then." That was all there was to say about that, really. The two had decided it wasn't anything to worry over, and Chris would appear soon enough. Probably. Weyler took a few steps back, looking about the room idly. He spotted another person he had yet to meet standing alone, distanced from the others. He carried no weapons, and his garb wasn't fitting for one preparing for physical combat. Must be a magic-user. No one else is talking to him...good timing to introduce myself, I suppose. He walked up to the sage, smiling broadly, trying to appear as accommodating as possible. "So! You're a spellcaster too, eh? You'll be one of Chris's subordinates, along with me and Evelyn..." The sage smiled back, but didn't answer. "You're...Jabin, right? I'm Weyler. Pleasure to meet you." |

Even though it was mid-morning, the sun had barely risen above the craggy peaks of the mountains of Bern. Still, beneath the shadows cast by the rocky giants bustled a grand number of soldiers, all busy with some duty or other. There were weapons to be assigned, sharpened, counterbalanced, and accounted for; wyverns to be attended to with food and water; travel packs with rations, tools, and other supplies to be loaded onto the mounts; armor to be polished and buffed; and most importantly, there were orders to be given. As per usual, most of the soldiers followed the same routine that they performed day in and day out. However, on this day, a small group had been hand-picked to venture forth on a mission that would take them far beyond the borders of Bern. The Duke of Vergant had eluded his pursuers, of whom less came back than went out. One soldier was taken to an asylum to treat dementia; the other two were given a single night's rest before they would join the ranks of a larger contingent of soldiers that would hunt down the sly duke. One of the three survivors, Kajan Algram, was thinking long and hard as he saddled up his wyvern and prepared the rest of his gear. That bastard will pay for what he has done. This time will be different. This time, I'll ram my lance up his-- Kajan's thoughts were interrupted by a loud, deep voice that cut the air like a razor. The soldiers milling about and chatting with one another ceased to do so immediately. With a small, sharp clink at each step, one man clad from head to foot in blood-red armor stepped out of the officers' barracks and strode to the front of the congregation of soldiers. "Today is a day of reckoning!" boomed the man. "A traitor has escaped to foreign lands! He is a stain upon the honor of the Riders of Bern! By the close of a fortnight, his blood will lay upon this earth!" The man thrust a fist into the air to emphasize his point; this was met with loud cheering. "And you," he shouted, pointing with one finger and sweeping his arm in front of him, "you are our finest, our swiftest, our boldest, our most courageous of knights. Our primary squad of hunters failed," he spat the last word, indignant with the failure of his men, "but this time I, General Marakken, will lend my wings and spear to the cause! The only good traitor is a dead traitor!" The soldiers erupted into more cheers. Their preparations finished, each rider climbed aboard his mount and prepared for flight. "This day, on black wings...JUDGMENT, FLY FORTH!" The sound of wyverns roaring and flapping their wings as they took off was deafening. Each soldiers whooped with bloodlust as they screamed through the sky on green, red, and black streaks. Reluctantly, Kajan joined them. How will I exact my vengeance with that blowhard in the way? Pushing that thought aside, Kajan focused on making his way to Etruria as quickly as possible. Isaac...I'm coming for you! |

And I have to admit, it is a little surprising that that little guy is the captain of the mages, but hey, I'm not really one to criticize." He shrugged, inwardly a little surprised that he was doing so well talking to someone. "I'm a rather decent Sage, but I know more theory than I have magical power, really. I-I write my own spellbooks, though." He reached into his pouch and pulled out the small book of Fire he had written last night. "I find I'm usually better at making magical items than at actually performing magic..." He trailed off, realizing he was starting to ramble. |

(OOC: Hmm, I'm really not sure which'd be better...I'm gonna say after you get back though. That could give the others more time to RP) Weyler Weyler reached out to shake Jabin's hand. "Heh, that seems to be the general feeling on the matter. He could be well-qualified for the job, for all we know. Hasn't had much of a chance to prove himself yet, really..." Weyler wore a puzzled expression when the subject of theory was mentioned. "Theory, eh? That's something. The process of spellcasting I've got down pretty well, but as for understanding, comprehension - well, I can't really make heads or tails of it. Maybe it's because I'm self-taught...just sort of, um, read the books, you know..." He smiled and laughed, making a joke of himself, but the action had the look of a wince. His own spellbooks? That's pretty advanced... Puts me to shame, personally... "Maybe, er...you could give me a hand sometime? I've never really had a teacher, and I'm afraid there's only so much I can learn on my own..." It was an embarassing question for Weyler, admitting something like that to someone he had just met. He found it difficult to meet Jabin's gaze after asking for help. Finally, he grew so uncomfortable he rushed to change the subject, fumbling in his pocket for the Lumen Flower. "Um-! So, you have some knowledge of magical items, right? Any idea what this is for, then?" |

"For all intents and purposes, they're just pretty flowers that can double as small torches at night. However..." Clark pulled out the glass box and showed it to them. The small cube in the middle glowed dark purple. "This is bloodbane, an extremely potent poison created with magic. Swallowing three drops will kill you in twenty minutes, thirty tops. Being stabbed with a weapon coated in it...well, let's just say you'd better have your will in order." Clark put the box back in its place. "Originally it was assumed that a synthetic poison must have a synthetic antidote. Luckily, this is not the case; the leaves of the Lumen flower contain a chemical that cancels the effect of bloodbane." Clark picked up a flower and spun it by the stem. "Curious little things. Just thought you should all have them in case of an accident." |

(OOC: Ack, sorry D: I keep screwing up... : X ) Weyler "Ah, I see...good thinking." Weyler had thought the commander was experienced before, but he had no idea how much. Clearly this wasn't just any mercenary...it's uncommon that a warrior branches out into using such secret and mystical tools. And this deadly poison he had shown to Weyler and Jabin, this "bloodbane", was only one of these special weapons hidden away for emergency. Weyler wasn't sure he'd like to know what else Clark had stashed away. He was left with a new respect for Clark, and a slight fear as to what the future could hold. Very considerate to give us all an antidote... But what could he be planning to get us into? That poison is a very unusual thing, I've never even heard of it before... How many bandit gangs could be carrying something powerful around, honestly? He continued pondering, rubbing his chin and staring off into nowhere. |

I'm...HUNGRY!

A gentle breeze was blowing across the grassy fields of rural Bern. Far from the capital and palace lay a much more rustic setting of villages and farmlands set into the age-old mountains. It was in this idyllic locale that Oliver Simetra and his family lived. Oliver had married the daughter of a powerful military general, but his preference for archery had made him somewhat of an outcast to his in-laws. He passed this skill on to his son, much to the chagrin of the old general. The boy was currently engaged in chasing a girl of the same age with flowing lilac hair. Both giggled with glee as they dashed through pastures filled with livestock. Finally, exhaused, they stop and sat against a tree at the top of a hill. "What do you want to be when you grow up, Erin?" asked the boy. "I'm going to go to Ilia and train with the pegasus knights!" "But that's so far away! How are we ever gonna get married?" "Mommy says that a pegasus can fly real far, so I'll come back here and take you home with me!" The boy flashed a toothy grin and hugged her. He noticed that she had a glowing necklace that she hadn't worn before. "Where'd you get that, Erinyes?" he asked. "My mother gave it to me. She said it's been in our family for years." Erinyes toyed with the crystal at the end. "It's really pretty." "I'll say!" the boy exclaimed. He stared at the jewel, mesmerized by its red glow. Suddenly, the outline of a face appeared within the crystal. The boy jumped back and let out a yelp. "What? What's wrong?" asked Erinyes. The boy looked at the necklace again, this time much more warily, but it had returned to its plain red state. "...Nothing." --- "To my dearest Recens, with much love, Erinyes! Wahahahaha!" "Give it back, you bastard!" Recens struggled futilely to take back the letter that had been snatched from his grasp, but the soldier held him back by pressing his hand against his head. Recens swung his arms to no avail; the man's grip was too strong to break. Suddenly, the soldier was thrown back as a solid kick landed on his chest. Dazed by his landing, he looked up with an unfocused gaze at his attacker. "That will be enough, DuGrine." "Stow it, Vergant! This little archer boy should be ashamed of himself! To taint a bloodline as powerful as his with such ridiculous th--" DuGrine was cut off by another kick, this time to the side of the head. The blow knocked him out cold. "I said enough, you dolt." Vergant retrieved the letter from DuGrine's grasp and handed it to Recens. "I'd ask you to pardon his actions, but the man's simply a jackass," he said to Recens. "Thank you. My name is Recens," he replied, "Recens Simetra." "Isaac Vergant." He extended his hand. "Lord Vergant? The duke?" "Please, none of that nonsense. I'm a soldier, not an aristocrat." "I see." Recens took the letter and finished reading it, then sat down and began writing back to Erinyes. "What're you doing down here, anyway? Shouldn't you be up at the riders' barracks?" "Yes, but I heard that Jason here," Isaac pointed to DuGrine's limp body, "was planning on harassing some of the..." Isaac paused, unsure of what to call the non-rider soldiers. "Um...special forces." "Oh. Well, you have my thanks." "Any time." "Gurrr...stupid...rich boy..." DuGrine muttered groggily. Isaac kicked him once more for good measure, then slung him over his shoulder and carried him out of Recens's tent. "I'll tell them he had too much to drink." Recens laughed. "Goodbye, Isaac." |

Jabin Jabin was about to answer Weyler when Clark stepped in, explaining it's anti-toxin properties. He had known about them, but Clark seemed like an expert by now, so he left it to him. "Just a safety precaution." Jabin frowned a little at Clark's intonation. He doesn't seem completely sure of himself... why? He decided to keep the flower close. He pulled it out of his pack and examined it. "I've seen a lot of these on the Sacae. They can make the landscape very beautiful at twilight in the spring..." He smiled, thinking of home. |

Weyler "...Eh? Oh, right, the Lumen Flowers...sorry, lost myself in thought for a moment there..." Weyler smiled apologetically. "You've been to Sacae, you say? I hear it's quite nice on the plains. Very serene. At least while there's none of that inter-tribal conflict." He sighed, thinking back to his own travels. "I've never been there, myself...I was never assigned any work too far out of Etruria..." Weyler shuffled his feet, bored with the conversation. "Hmmm...pardon me for asking, but what brings you out to this boring old town, anyway? You seem like something of a traveler, and there's much better places to be spending one's time..." |

Clark Jabin and Weyler began talking about Sacae, so Clark took the opportunity to step out of the conversation and take his seat again. While he waited for the rest of his band to arrive, Clark stared out one of the windows and thought. He didn't care what had happened since he had been gone in Bern; that life was over. But what if they come after me? Can I keep my identity a secret for that long? |

Jabin Jabin would have liked to talk more about the Sacae, but Weyler seemed to want to change the subject. "Hmmm...pardon me for asking, but what brings you out to this boring old town, anyway? You seem like something of a traveler, and there's much better places to be spending one's time..." Jabin thought about. He had to. After all, ever since he had left the university, that had been the question he had asked himself all along. After a short pause, the professor finally figured out what he wanted to say. "Well... I guess I became tired of seeing nothing but the inside of a classroom. Sure, there's a lot to learn from books, but... well, I'm from the plains, I could never stay inside..." He realized he hadn't really answered the question and hastily added, "O-of course, money can only last so long, so I needed some way to fund my travels. I've been with mercenaries before; they can be lots of fun." |

Weyler Ah, he's from Sacae? I hope I ddn't offend him... "Haha, I see. I think that more or less sums up just about everyone's reasons for being here. Money never lasts...I suppose that's why the mercenary business is always thriving. Plenty of disputes to sort out." He wondered about the morality of such work, as he often did. He doubted that all the pillaging and destruction was merely for the hell of it. He found it hard to believe that greed alone could drive so many to become outlaws. The bandit groups he was familiar with often recruited from the bottom of the social classes, organizing the dregs of society into a force to be reckoned with, at least to the average citizen. So there was that to consider. Is it really that there are so many cold-hearted, avaricious men out there? Weyler had some idea, after all, how poverty could strain and transform someone. Perhaps this is why he felt a slight, nagging sympathy for those he was hired to fight, why he dreaded the possibility of civil unrest. Then again, he could merely be overthinking things. The mage had an awful habit of imagining the worst. He continued to speak, though he looked concerned with something and spoke as if distracted. "Yes...it's strange, really, that business is never slow..." |

Derran Derran noticed a slight humming, which it seemed, no one else heard, he knew that sound...about time it's back, I was beggining to think it wouldn't show up again, Derran thought. Derran walked outside to find a blue curved blade with an ornate hilt, no guard, and a supporting steel beam connected to th back of the blade leaned up against the wall of the guild, his Defender. Where were you? Derran asked, somewhat anxious. It doesn't reallly matter to you right now, lets just say I went and scouted out the place where you are going for your next mission, and before you ask, it doesn't seem as if your brother is in there., the sword replied. Well, as long as you are back, derran thought, By the way, how did you know about our mission?, Derran asked. I listened to your commander's thoughts earlier today, before I left. the Defender remarked. Derran picked up the sword and put it into it's sheath on his back, he walked back into the guild. |

Clark Clark got up and stretched, then checked the positition of the sun. "Ah, to hell with it," he said. "They'll just have to catch up." Then, to the group, he said, "Let's roll, guys. We've an appointment to keep." With that, he headed out the door, followed by the small band of mercenaries. The sun shone brightly as they headed in the direction of the village from the previous day. Clark grew apprehensive as a large shadow passed over him, but a quick glance upward revealed that it was merely a cloud. |
