I'm...HUNGRY!

OOC: Sorry this took so long...I've been busy lately. D:

Clark

With the villagers quickly retreating and the last of the thieves dealt with, Clark wiped the blood from his blade on the ground and sheathed it. Clark motioned for the other mercenaries to follow him back into the castle. "Time to collect our fee!" he called.

Jane dashed over to Recens and Brannan and nagged at them to get back inside quickly, too. "C'mon, time's a-wastin'!" she said, tugging at Recens's sleeve. "We don't want those dirty sellswords getting ahead of us!"

Recens resisted and pulled his arm away from her. "I'm pretty sure we're sellswords too, Jane."

"Pffft. We're better than they are."

Recens rolled his eyes and followed her in anyway. Inside, Collin was waiting for them. He bowed and addressed everyone in a formal manner.

"Well done, everyone! The threat to the castle has been dealt with. You will find your portion of the reward in the next ro--"

"Hold it!" interrupted Jane loudly. "What do you mean by 'portion' of the reward?"

"Ah, well," began Collins, "the earl feels that you deserve pay based on your contribution. Miss Falaxis, your group will receive one-fourth of the reward, and Mister Kallen, your group will receive three-fourths of the reward."

OOC: I want to type more, but I'd like to allow you guys to have the chance to react before I continue, so this will be open for about 20 hours before I post again.

Brannan

"Portion?"

Brannan looked from Recens to Jane, confused at the wording. There had been no mention of the agreed method of payment, but something so unusual as this would've been mentioned. Jane's reaction reinforced this belief.

"I certainly hope you're not pulling a fast one on us. You are talking to people who kill for money, after all, and under these present circumstances, you're an obstacle between myself and earned wages." His next words came at a volume slightly above a whisper, his eyes narrowing slightly as he uttered them. "That's a very bad place to be..."

His hand twitched and reached for his sword, but relaxed as it drew near the hilt. This wasn't something he had to concern himself with, after all. The point of this battle was to prove himself, guarantee himself a place within the ranks of Byron's Fury. There would be plenty of money to be made later. Besides, from the sound of it, Jane was more than willing to take care of this matter herself. Brannan didn't want to overstep his authority.

"Oh, never mind. I'm not sure what sort of agreement you came to, anyway." He turned to address Jane. "Were those the agreed terms?"

Myke

Myke eagerly anticipated the news of the reawrd; it would mean that they could be on their merry way back to the guild. Then he heard what was being done with the reward, and started laughing.

"Well, I suppose it makes sense. No point rewarding us equally if we don't do equal amounts of work."

And now we see the fireworks spark. That Falaxis woman is not amused, and I doubt she's a pushover. I just hope we all leave here in one piece.

NROOC:
Me: LTC's first post is a good example of why I don't put characters' names at the top of my RPs. Only one paragraph was really about Clark. This is not a criticism of your RP, clan leader, just a criticism of this widespread practice.

XEQ is disappointed to see that the battle is over. It contemplates killing one of the rival mercenaries just to get the commander's attention, but then Clark calls them in to collect their reward. The archer follows its orders.
Once inside, the old man from earlier tells them that the reward will be divided between the two groups, with Clark's band receiving three times more than the others.
XEQ nods. It cares little for money. All it needs to buy are arrows and occasionally new clothes. But Clark's group deserves more pay for this, since they are greater in number, and they took out more of the enemies.

Jane turned to Brannan and smiled a sickeningly sweet smile. "Why, no, dear Brannan, those weren't the terms we agreed on. I'd like to ask our friend Collins just what the hell he's trying to pull." Jane had turned to face Collins now, and had said the last bit through gritted teeth.

"Well, I suppose it makes sense. No point rewarding us equally if we don't do equal amounts of work."

Jane rounded on the spot and glared daggers at the man. "What's that supposed to mean, punk?!"

"It means neither of us will be receiving our full pay, Jane," Clark said calmly, stepping between Jane and Myke, "so I'd like to take this time to politely ask you to close your mouth."

"Don't you dare tell me what to do!" snarled Jane. "If I get my hands on that earl, I'm going to wring his n--"

"Someone's making threats on my life and I'm not around to hear it?"

Jane's rant was interrupted by the object of her insanity himself, the Earl of Auncet. He had entered the room and was walking slowly and imperiously towards the mercenaries, a shrewd smile plastered on his face. "Now, now, Miss Falaxis, you didn't really mean any of that, did you?"

Jane scowled at him from across the room. "What are you playing at?" she demanded.

The earl just chuckled. "Whatever do you mean?"

"This division business! That wasn't part of the deal!"

"My dear madame Falaxis, if you look around the room, you will see twelve mercenaries. Three of them belong to your group, and nine of them to Sir Kallen." Clark inaudibly muttered the phrase "don't call me sir." Auncet, having not heard him, continued. "Someone who graduated from one of the more prestigious academies such as yourself should be able to compute a percentage."

"But...but..." Jane sputtered. "You never said...we weren't supposed to share!"

"Again, you misunderstand. I posted a reward; I never said that each group would receive that reward."

"You...you...!" Jane stopped as she felt something press into her back.

"You'd be wise to watch what you say, Jane," said Auncet in a harsher tone. Behind Jane, Telias had returned to the castle and was currently pressing his spear against her back. "Telias is my most loyal soldier, and I'm sure you've seen his lance at work."

Recens walked into the next room and grabbed the two sacks of gold. When he returned, he tossed the heavier of the two to Clark. "Let's go, Jane. You too, Brannan."

Jane edged forward slightly to get away from the tip of the lance, then turned and followed Recens. Clark nodded in respect to the earl, then spoke to the group. "Let's go, everyone. We've got a good walk ahead of us."

"You're welcome to spend the night in the castle, Mr. Kallen," said Auncet.

"Thank you, but I must decline," Clark said over his shoulder. "My men can't sleep in three-fourths of a bed." With that closing remark, Clark exited the castle.

Brannan

Branna stared at the Earl for a moment, let his gaze fix on him just long enough to create an uncomfortable moment, then followed Recens' and Jane's example and left. He remained silent until the three of them were a fair distance from the castle.

"Sure you don't want to do anything about this? The majority of his troops are dead. Just look around." Brannan spread out an arm over the bloody field. "And that Telias fellow can't fight both of you."

Plenty of money to be had that way. Misers such as that, ironically enough, will pay just about anything for their lives.
We'd have to kill him afterwards, though.
No doubt he's got an undeserved reputation based on his "nobility".
I don't think an alibi would be too difficult to throw together, though...

No response. Brannan shrugged and dropped the issue, opting to pursue another matter of interest.

"So, what do you think? Will I be accepted?"

Serena

"Hey hey hey, splitting the loot? That's not right." Serena snorted as she heard Collins' words, her arms folded. Granted, the job was easy enough and it did make sense to split the loot between the two mercenary groups, but that didn't mean she had to like it. Logic had nothing to do with how hard a person fought on a battlefield and although she didn't like that other crappy group of mercenaries that had nosed in on their territory, they still should have gotten their own share. Not 1/4ths of it. Maybe 1/2 of the whole reward...I mean they kind of suck. But she wasn't going to say that. Especially with how angry that magic-using chick looked.

So she simply remained silent throughout it all, only breaking it to clap at Clark's retort about 3/4ths of a bed. She walked out of the room with Clark, grinning slightly. "Nice one, boss. Serves that little prick right, huh?"

Obviously she said that last part out of the Earl's earshot. Wouldn't do to get in trouble for calling a prick a prick.

Well, that didn't go as I'd thought it would, but then, considering I was the first person she looked like she wanted to kill, and I burn quite quickly, I suppose I should be grateful for that. I was hoping for a few more harsh words at the very least, though.

Myke, deciding not to press any issue that could possibly spark an arguement, followed the boss out of the room in silence.

Now, I suppose I'd best see what card Vassarin plays next. Maybe he'll do something smart for his plan, like try and provoke me further. As it stands though, I think I'll keep disappointing him.

XEQ is somewhat baffled by the apparent anger with this seemingly fair payment. It seems both sides were expecting the full payment. They are forced to accept what they are being given.
The archer nods when Clark says, "Let's go, everyone. We've got a good walk ahead of us."
The earl makes an offer to the mercenaries to sleep there in the castle, but the commander replies with, "Thank you, but I must decline. My men can't sleep in three-fourths of a bed."
Or at all, in this case. But XEQ is eager to leave anyways. This place is too familiar, and the memories it recalls are mostly ugly.

Jane grumbled something about an assassination attempt being a sound idea, while Recens said nothing. "So, what do you think? Will I be accepted?" Brannan asked. Recens nodded. "You're crazy, you don't have a problem killing, and you've got a weapon," Recens replied. "You'll fit right in."

Jane, Recens, and Branna trudged back to the mercenary base in a sour mood. Upon reaching the barracks, Jane stormed up the stairs to her room and slammed the door loudly. Ognus peeped out from the space under the stairs.

"Rough night?" he asked.

"Don't ask," Recens replied.

"Too late, I alrea--" Ognus started to jest, but stopped when he saw how serious Recens was.

"I'm going to bed," said the grumpy archer, and went to his room on the first floor. Recens locked the door and quietly lowered himself out the window, then ran towards town, doing his best to remain out of sight.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Nice one, boss. Serves that little prick right, huh?" Serena was her usual perky self even after the minor altercation with the earl. Clark was mildly amused.

"He's a right fine character, that's for sure," Clark said. "I guess it's true what they say: being a noble doesn't make you noble."

Clark and the mercenaries made no effort to catch up with the trio walking ahead of them. Tensions were high right now, especially since Clark's group had received a higher cut of the pay, so there was no telling what could happen. Tempers would flare, steel would clash...not a pretty sight, and by no means profitable. Clark led them off in a different direction as soon as the path split. Finally, after a good while walking, they reached the town, discovering upon their arrival that most shops were closed down and the streets were deserted, save for some of the more..."unsavory" types.

"I don't know about you guys," said Clark, addressing the group, "but I'm bushed. I'm gonna go hit the sack." Clark started walking towards the inn, then stopped and turned back to the mercenaries. "By the way...too much work is bad for your health. You've all got the day off tomorrow."

Brannan

"Oh, come, is that all it takes?" Brannan laughed in response, though nothing about their exchange amused him. Something about the ranger was starting to rub him the wrong way. He was getting the sense that Recens thought himself superior, and if there was one thing that upset Brannan, it was a sanctimonious mercenary. His eyes followed the deadly marksman as he walked off muttering, removing the weapons he had borrowed as the man turned out of sight.

So this is just a band of crazy killers, eh? Then what's a saint like you doing here?
The moral high-ground offers little advantage among blades and axes. It's just another field to get cut down on.

"I'm afraid we've been, eh, cheated. Just a bit." Brannan spoke to Ognus now, seeking to answer the questions Recens dodged. "The Earl hired us alongside another mercenary group, led by some man by the name of Kallen. The reward originally offered, apparently, was split between us and the others. We've only got a fourth of what was promised us."

Brannan paused a moment, then smiled and extended his hand. "Sorry, forgot to introduce myself. Brannan's the name. Recens' seems to think I've made the group, but I'd like a more official answer, if possible."

Weyler

"A day off...?"

Weyler's first thought was that tomorrow would result in additional work, due to that ungrateful, cheap noble. However, that other band of mercenaries had looked rather upset with the result of things, much more than Clark had, and from Weyler's understanding the two groups were rivals. Laying low for a day might be a good choice of action.

Still, the wizard was a bit dissappointed. He didn't exactly enjoy his work, but he liked the people he worked with, for the most part. They were the closest thing he had to friends in town.

Weyler waved a goodbye to the Commander, and strode off towards his own quarters.

A day off? That won't last, but if it does, I suppose it gives me some time to think over what I should do next... Either way, I'd best keep my guard up. Between the people we've ticked off recently and the people after me... Yeah, I'll be surprised if I don't see people trying to decorate my shoulder blades with daggers soon.

Myke left the group to find a different inn, hoping that perhaps a certain someone would do something very stupid in his anger. He paid the innkeeper, went up the the room provided, and collapsed in a heap on the bed.

Ognus walked out of the stair space and shook Brannan's hand. The exchange was rather comical, as Ognus was once again in a situation in which the swordsman towered over him. "I'm Ognus," he said. "I'm the commander's right-hand man."

Ognus plopped himself down in one of the chairs, which had slightly higher legs to compensate for his shortness. "Auncet's a wily bastard," he said to Brannan, "but that's low even for him. Feh. Nobles and their ilk. As for your position..." Ognus changed the subject and leaned back in his chair, causing the front legs to raise off the ground. "If Recens thinks you're a good fighter, you're a good fighter. Don't listen to Jane," he said, jerking a thumb towards the ceiling. "Recens is probably the best one out of us at judging combat prowess, aside from maybe the commander and yours truly."

Ognus let the chair fall back to its normal position, then leaned towards Brannan. "Just between you and me, Recens is an ex-soldier." Ognus spoke in a low whisper. "He hasn't said anything about it, and I don't know where he's from, but I know the type. When you fought alongside him, did you notice anything out of the ordinary?"

"Well, yes, actually. He was...uptight. He ended quite a few lives blank-faced. Never lost his composure once. I had the feeling that the whole situation disgusted him. He was very precise, though. Very efficient." Brannan moved towards a nearby chair and seated himself, alllowing him to whisper in return. "Could just be his style, but it stood out to me, somehow. Although my concerns are somewhat eased after hearing of his former profession, Ognus."

Brannan sighed, thinking again of the money that had escaped them. "What action do you think Byron will take over this Auncet matter? I haven't known him long, but I'm sure he'll find this upsetting."

Clark's group leaves the castle and heads for town, only to find the town sleeping. The commander informs the group that he is going to go sleep, then gives them the next day off.
XEQ is disappointed by this. As if having to stand around until morning is not enough, it now has twenty-four more hours of statue imitation. It marches back to the guild building where it waited the night before.
When it arrives, it decides to fix the tears in its clothing caused by axes. Reaching behind its back, the archer pulls a needle and thread from a small pocket on the side of its quiver. It will spend the next few hours sewing its disguise back to good condition.

"Aye, that he will be," responded Ognus. "The commander's an honorable mercenary, and he doesn't like being cheated out of a deal. I'm sure he'll talk things over with the earl." Ognus thought a moment, then spoke again. "...That is, assuming the earl will hear him..." The words suggested Ognus wasn't too sure of what he was saying. "You three didn't...er...lash out when you heard the news, did you?"

Brianna

Brianna had stayed pretty quiet while the group got their reward and headed back to the guild with a small smile on her face, delighted at having actually fought well in this battle. She hadn't said anything while the nobleman dropped the bomb that he was splitting the cash between the groups. It was a move that Brianna had anticipated, so she was surprised that the rest of the group, and the other set of fighters, were so put out by the guy splitting the reward.

What did they expect? He was a noble and, as a rule, they never give away more money then they absolutely have to, especially when it comes to paying merceranies. Getting gipped comes with the territory for groups like this, they better get used to it. At least we actually got the bigger share this time.

When Clark dismissed them, and then rewarded them with a day off to do whatever they wanted, Brianna left the group and headed towards the nicest tavern in the area. This time she wasn't going to get drunk, though alcohol was definitely on the menu. Brianna had decided it was time to satisfy a more primal urge that she hadn't taken care of for a long while...

(OOC: *coughs* <_< >_>

BTW, if you want to have your character follow Brianna and stop her (inadvertently or deliberately) from pulling a guy, feel free. I think it'd be funny. :D)

Pascal

Pascal had somewhat forgotten how valuable the simple pleasures in life were. Though if you asked him, he hasn't had any pleasure since he left to begin travelling.
Hesitantly, he tethered up Ptolemy outside a fancy-looking tavern and ambled to the counter. It had been some time since he'd even stepped foot in a tavern anyway. After a little thought, he decided to indulge in some strong, if costly, wine.

I guess once you get over the noise and rowdy drunks, these places are pretty cosy.

He took a long, deep sip.

Hmmm... I could get used to this.

A group in a nearby table suddenly burst into laughter.

...on second thoughts, maybe not. Elimine, they could do with a good clubbing. ...they probably want a brawl though, don't they? Pah. Forget them, Pascal. There are plenty of others here more deserving of your attention.

Of course, that didn't stop him anxiously eyeing up the tougher looking drunks when he wasn't admiring the women. The fact that those men somehow had the money to regularly buy drink at one of the more pricey taverns was somewhat unnerving.

Then it hit him.

Hey, wait. These places have rooms in them! I could actually sleep in a real bed rather than that pokey old tent a or crappy room those churches have for travellers!

Brianna

Entering the rather ostentatious tavern, Brianna glanced around quickly, eyeing up the men in the room. Finding none to her liking, at least for the moment, she went to the bar and ordered a flowery cocktail. Her eyes nearly popped out at the price, but she paid it with the money she'd collected from the previous mission without quibbling. Picking a table in the centre of the room, she put her feet up and sat in a comfortable yet sexy position. Sipping her drink through a straw, she took another covert look around the room.

Too old... too fat... too much of a thug...

She glanced over at a man who had entered just before her and was sitting drinking one of the better wines. He had long, blond hair, which Brianna admitted to herself was kinda cute, if a bit weird. Sizing him up, she disregarded him like the others. He held himself like a snooty noble, and trying to pull one of that lot was way more trouble then it was worth.

Sighing heavily, she drank her drink slowly and waited for either a decent man to come through the door, or one of the okay ones to come over to her and start flirting.

Out of the corner of his eye, Pascal caught someone looking at him. Turning to see who it was, he was pleasantly surprised.

Hey, is that lass checking me out?

Unfortunately for Pascal, his drink had somewhat set in by now, and his usually struggling-to-be-heard common sense had completely left the building.

Hmm, come to think of it, I'm pretty hungry...suppose if I bought her a dinner as well, maybe she'd...

Pascal sat there for a moment, dreaming of possible scenarios that could spin off. Chuckling quietly to himself, he clambered out of his chair and sat down by the woman.

"May I have this seat?"

Oops, nearly forgot that. Courtesy is the first step, they say.

He leant towards her, smirking a little.

"Say, I was just about to order a dinner, and well after seeing a face like yours, I couldn't possibly let myself have an expensive meal all by myself."

Brianna

Spotting a man enter the tavern that she quite liked the look of, Brianna perked up and looked directly at him. He noticed her come hither stare and started to walk over... to swerve away when the blond man Brianna had look at and dismissed before sat himself down across from her and drunkenly made a pass. His smirk irritated her, as did his presumptuous manner. He was obviously a bit drunk and he'd just scared off someone Brianna had really liked the look of, but she'd never been one to turn down a free meal.

Deciding that she probably wouldn't put out but she certainly could play along for some free food, Brianna smiled softly at him and giggled flirtatiously.

"You're cute. I'd be happy to take you up on that offer of a meal, I don't want to dine alone either. My name is Brianna, by the way."

Aha! Success!

"Brianna? My, what a lovely name. Truly befitting of a lovely lady. I'm Lord Pascal of Demouree, but I'm sure you'll agree titles are a needless embellishment."

"Though really, I can't say I do much Lording. It's much better to deal with the issues I face myself, instead of ordering people to."

He smiled, and called over a barmaid.
"Excuse me, I'd like to order your finest steak, and another wine. ...white please, this time. ...and this kind lady would like..."

He trailed off, eagerly awaiting the order of woman.

Brianna barely managed to suppress laughter as his words, as he so obviously thought he was 'in'. Her opinion of him increased a little when he didn't try and order for her, as many men do once they assume they're getting some.

"Make that two steaks, and I'd like... hmm... your finest red wine, please."

Once the barmaid had left, Brianna leaned forward and rested her head in her hands, smiling even more.

"So... tell me a bit about yourself, Pascal..."

"Oh, no. Nothing that severe. We merely voiced out outrage." It was Brannan's turn to whisper in confidence this time. "Though the time's ideal for retribution. All the Earl's got left is a paladin, really. The majority of his forces died in the ambush...Jane sounds like she's all for it, at least..." He smirked, and tilted his head to the side slightly. " "Course, it's not my place to suggest such a thing, being a new recruit and all..."

He leaned back into his chair. "But we ought to focus on the positives. A fourth of the reward isn't too bad a haul considering only three of us were put on the job. Now, where did Recens put that sack of gold...did you see it?"

Ognus shook his head. "If Auncet functions like most nobles, you only saw a fraction of the soldiers he has dominion over. Like all nobles, though..." Ognus sighed and spoke disapprovingly, "he doesn't care if a small section are obliterated, as long as the job gets done. Why waste the effort of preparing more men when the mercenaries can do all the work? It's a terrible thing."

Glancing over his shoulder, Ognus noticed that the door to Recens' room was closed. "That's odd. He didn't leave the money in here...he must've taken it to his room." Ognus lightly punched Brannan's shoulder in a playful way. "Eager for your cut already? Heh, you'll get your share. If you want, though, go talk to him about it."

Pascal

Ah, she's smiling!

Pascal was so proud of himself, getting so far on his first time.

"Well, before my dad kicked the bucket, I used to work the Church of Elimine, and I guess I still do in some ways. I mean, I don't work under them anymore but I still carry out the sort of duties a missionary does. It feels really good to smite thieves and murderers that terrorise the innocent. Of course, it means I have to travel a lot, and I hardly get any company or a good bed to sleep in. It's a tough job, but makes days like this all the better, I'm sure you'll agree."

The wine arrived, and the barmaid said that the food wouldn't be long. She looked at Pascal a little bewilderedly. He really was oblivious.

"Yeah, the other benefit is that you pick up a lot of useful skills from the trade."

He paused for a moment, racking his brains on what to say next.

"Anyway, I don't know why I'm talking so much. For all I know, you might have been through similar stuff. So, what about you?"

Brianna

Brianna pretended to listen intently and be appropriately impressed, while thinking that he was probably exaggerating his duties. She caught the slightly disapproving look on the waitress' face, the girl obviously knew what Brianna was up to. Brianna felt a little guilty, but not enough for her to stop what she was doing.

Free food! Free food!

"Not much to say... I grew up in an upper-class family, got bored and joined the army when I was 12. I was a soldier until a year ago, when I quit the army and started wandering around. I've since joined this little mercenary group in town, doing some odd jobs, fighting some random battles. Nothing particularly interesting really."

After this rather succinct summary of her life, the steaks arrived and Brianna tucked in, eating big mouthfuls slowly to savour the taste of it while taking deep sips of the magnificent red wine.

Brannan laughed and pulled at his jacket. "I'm not a greedy person, really. Just thought'd be nice to get another set of clothes...weapons would be nice, and then there's food money...see, I didn't venture down here with much gold. I spent most of what I had traveling over here." He walked over towards Recens' room, and raised a fist to knock at the door.

"Hello, Recens? I was hoping to get my share of the reward."

No response. Brannan tried knocking louder, but to no avail. Unless the ranger was a very heavy sleeper (comatose, more like it, he thought), he would've heard the noise and given Brannan his wage, or yelled at him for making such a commotion, or something...

You're making me more and more uncomfortable, Recens.

"Ognus, he's not responding. Is he usually so anti-social after a poor turn of events?"

Ognus frowned. "Recens isn't exactly a social butterfly, but I know from experience that he's a light sleeper." Ognus got up and walked over to the door, then rapped on it sharply three times. "You in there, Recens?" he called.

No response. "I don't usually do this, but..." Ognus grabbed the doorknob and slowly turned it, then gently inched the door open. The bed was empty, save for the sack of gold in the middle, and Recens was nowhere to be found.

"Hmm..." Ognus scratched his bald head with the tip of one of his knives. "Well, the reward's here, but Recens isn't..."

"Strange." Brannan looked about the room, trying to commit the space to memory. Such knowledge could prove useful in the future, especially once he grew more familiar with the barracks as a whole. He paced about the room, trying to think of a reason for the ranger's absence.

"He seemed rather eager to be done with the Auncet matter, actually...I don't remember him complaining much about the pay, either. Could have something to do with the other band of mercenaries. The one led by, eh, what's his name, Kallen." He froze midstep, then turned to look Ognus in the eyes. "You don't think he went to...do something about the other group, do you? He doesn't strike me as the hot-headed type, but..."

Must have something to do with the other group, I'm sure of it.
Kill them for revenge? Steal back the greater share of the reward? Possibly...

"I don't really see him as being that way, either, but you never know." Ognus shivered. "It's always the quiet ones."

Changing the subject to a lighter one, he said, "Did you know Clark Kallen used to work here under Byron? It's true; he only left us a few months ago. He's a little strange, too."

"Ah, really?" This knowledge put Brannan at ease. He couldn't se Recens running out to slay a former comrade over money. He wasn't interested in conflict with other mercenary groups at this point. A bit of backstabbing isn't uncommon, especially when competition gets particularly bad, but it's easier to deal with such turmoil when one becomes grounded, comfortable in their new territory. Brannan enjoyed such antics now and then for the excitement of it all, but it was rather off-putting to him as the new member.

"That must be how Recens knew Clark, then," said Brannan, looking out the window towards town. "He had a bit of trouble remembering Kallen's name, but it's a good explanation anyhow. Did they get along when they worked together?"

Brannan returned the blank stare. There was silence for a time, and he turned to look out the window again.

"Well. I'm sure it's nothing of importance. You can ask him all about it when he returns."

What in hell is he up to?

This is upsetting.
I feel it's important, but I don't know nearly enough to come to any conclusions.
Asking any more questions would be suspicious as well...

He cleared his throat. "It's getting late. Should I leave and find myself an inn, or will I be issued quarters?"

"We've got a room for you," said Ognus. "Well, not specifically for you, but we've got some vacancy. Go up the stairs; it'll be the third door on the left." He paused, then remembering something, said, "Jane's is the second on the left. Make sure you pick the right door, or..." Ognus trailed off. By now, Brannan should have a good idea of Jane's temper.

"Let's not think about it. A fiery death on a good day, right?" He laughed, and headed towards the staircase. "Thanks. May as well get settled in, then. Thanks for the conversation, Ognus. I feel very welcome here."

He walked down the hallway slowly, the mock-dreadful thought settling in his head that the room was empty for a reason. He smiled, counting the doors down the hall to himself in a whisper. He came to the third door, turning the knob gently so as not to disturb Jane. He seated himself on the bed cross-legged, and stared at the adjacent wall.

I've got to become valuable around here.
They just might send for me...

I'm...HUNGRY!

Clark walked back to the inn slowly, not in any rush to get back to his bed. Sure, he was tired, but the blanket of quiet that had descended on the sleepy town made being outside enjoyable, and he savored the silence. As he passed through the streets, he saw some drunks stumbling out of a bar, and the occasional prostitute here and there. Clark glanced at them longingly but did not stray from his path. I'm not safe yet, he thought, and I won't be for a while. I can't let anyone get too close to me.

After a bit more walking, Clark made it back to the Grand Sunset. Jacques was not at the front desk, so Clark silently went to his room and shut the door. He stripped off his armor and placed the rest of his gear beside it on a table, lay down on his bed, and said, "The window's open, you know."

Recens clambered up through the opening and leaned against the wall. "How did you know I was there?"

"Lucky guess. What do you want?"

"I need to talk to you, Isaac," said Recens.

"Well, first of all," replied Clark, "stop calling me Isaac. I left that life behind, and I can't go back now. The man you see before you is Clark Kallen."

Recens sighed. "Clark, then. Why did you leave? I only heard brief snippets before I had to flee Bern myself."

"In a nutshell, I was framed," said Clark, laying back and putting his hands behind his head. "Most of the higher-ups didn't care much for me, so when they needed a scapegoat, I was their convenient excuse."

"What were they up to?" Recens asked.

"From what I knew of it, they were cheating citizens out of more money at tax time," said Clark, "but obviously I didn't have much time to look into the situation, and the only people who could shed some light on the subject want me dead."

"Do you think they'll come after you?"

"They already have. They chased me into the Nabata desert. Kajan was leading them. If he survived, I'm sure he'll be back."

Recens nodded. "One thing's been troubling me, though...where is Viktor?"

Clark tensed up and remained silent.

"...I see," said Recens.

"So why did you leave?" asked Clark, changing the subject.

"Uncle Lars and his crazy business, of course," said Recens flippantly. "He killed Erinyes, Isa--Clark. All I have to remember her by is this pendant she gave me." Recens scooped the pendant out from beneath his shirt and showed it to Clark. "She's had it since a child. It's some sort of valuable family heirloom."

"You could sell that thing for quite a bit around here."

"Stop kidding, Clark."

"I wasn't," said Clark. "Why did he kill her?"

"He wanted the pendant, which he thought she still had."

"Any idea why he might have wanted it?"

"Yes," replied Recens.

"Are you going to tell me?"

"Nope."

Clark sighed. "Well, I need sleep, so you're going to have to leave," he said. "I'd tell you to be careful, but you didn't even bother to use a fake name, so...just don't piss anybody off too much."

"Duly noted," said Recens, and gave a mock salute. As he was climbing out the window, Clark stopped him.

"Recens..." he said.

"Yes?" Recens looked back into the room.

"...Don't die on me."

Recens nodded, then left the room. He quickly made his way back to the Fury's base. When he climbed into his room again, he saw that the door was open, but no one was around, so he ignored it and went to bed.

By the time he had arrived at the base, Ognus had already gone to bed in his makeshift room under the stairs. It was a small space, but Ognus was a small man, and considering the haunts of his youth, it suited him well.

(OOC: Haw haw this is so late.)

Serena & Valentia

"Hey, a free day? Awesome awesome awesome." Serena said to herself as she heard Clark's last announcement. It was great. Nothing like a little rest and recreation to help bring up a person's flagging soul. Granted they only had done like...three jobs so far. And they were all kind of easy. Well, maybe not that easy. Perhaps a break would be good for her after all. But that had to wait till later, after all. Night was falling and there wasn't anything she really had in mind. Maybe visit the armory again and set her sights on a new sword...or maybe go splurge at a restaurant, Oh the possibilities...

With those thoughts in mind, Serena drifted to the inn and immediately collapsed in her bed. She was asleep within moments.

As for Valentia, she received her news with a little less enthusiasm. After all, she had just joined and barely got her axe bloody in that last battle. She wasn't thirsty for blood, of course, but it felt like she hadn't done enough to prove herself to the group. There was nothing for it now though, although she promised herself that she'd talk to Clark the next morning. She was about to return to her ship before she realized that it had already left. Muttering to herself, she decided to just take a walk around town.

OOC: Well, since IS and Serene haven't really continued their nightly exchange, I'm going to go ahead and have Clark wake up. If you still need to do something from the previous night, feel free to do it retroactively, but this has had no posts in a week.

Despite the opportunity to sleep in, Clark woke up early the next morning. He had become accustomed to substandard sleep, and staying in bed much longer would break his current sleep schedule.

Clark had things he needed to take care of that day, and he wanted to get them out of the way quickly, but unfortunately, not everyone awakened as early in the day as he did. Clark changed into a fresh set of clothes and did a few simple exercises such as push-ups and crunches. He hadn't had much trouble in the previous mission, but if the jobs they took on got much harder, he'd be better off if he were to start training again.

Heading outside, Clark attempted to practice with the axe he had taken from the bandit stronghold. Throwing it effectively was simple enough; it was a minor variant on the way he threw a spear. However, Clark had no idea how to use one at close quarters. He had seen the bandits swinging them recklessly in front of them, but Clark doubted that angry peasants were the best instructors of how to wield an axe properly.

Clark swung it a few times in front of him like a sword, but the shorter range and increased weight threw him off-balance slightly. He strapped the curious weapon to his back again, deigning to save learning to use it for later.

OOC: This is another one of those times when I've got a ton of material I'd like to post, but for the sake of not skipping half a day without letting you guys reply, I'm going to wait a little bit before I do more.

Clark puttered around for a short while until the shopkeepers started to come out to open their businesses for the day. He caught Lamar on the way to the apothecary and pulled him aside.

"Hodge, there's some important business I need to discuss with you and Angus," he said in a low whisper. Lamar nodded and followed him to the armory, where Ralheim was putting polish on a beautifully-curved scimitar. He looked up and acknowledged Clark and Lamar as they entered.

"Morning!" he said brightly as he shined the blade. "What can I do for the two of you."

"I was hoping the two of you could help me with this," Clark said, pulling the glass box containing this store of bloodbane out. "This is the poison I had you order flowers for me to counteract, Hodge," he said to Lamar.

"Aye, so you'll be needing more, then?" Lamar asked.

"No, no, but I'm willing to bet Angus will need your help. Not that I'm doubting your abilities," he said reassuringly to Ralheim, "I just wanted him here to help out. You see, there was an incident...a boy we were fighting got ahold of the poison. Luckily he was too stupid to do anything but kill himself, but it seems that even keeping it in this box isn't good enough for security purposes anymore." Clark opened the box and held the cube gingerly in his palm. "I'll be straight with you: I want you to forge it into a sword, if possible. That's why you could use Lamar's help; I'm sure he would know more about the cube's magical properties. Use the whole thing. I'll pay whatever you'll charge."

Ralheim frowned. "I'm no scholar," he said, "but this thing looks corrosive as hell. It would eat through any scabbard you tried to put it in."

"If it's possible, Hodge, could you create a scabbard infused with the curative properties of the Lumen flowers?" Clark asked.

Lamar scratched his head and thought for a moment. "It would take time, and it would be difficult to make the scabbard simply contain the blade instead of negating it entirely..." He trailed off and thought again. "Give me a week. I should be able to do it in that time."

"Great!" Clark exclaimed. "And if that fails, I'll find myself a pair of thick gauntlets."

"Pardon me, Clark," interrupted Ralheim, "but how can you afford such a thing? This will likely cost more than anything I've ever had in my shop, if my predictions are correct."

"Surely you're not doubting my credibility, Angus," said Clark reprovingly.

"You've paid for everything else in due time, yes," Ralheim replied, "but I can't help but wonder where your money comes from."

"It comes from where I come from, of course."

Ralheim looked at him with surprise. People in the town had speculated, but no one knew Clark's true origin. "Oh? And where might that be?"

"The desert. Everyone knows that," Clark chided. Bidding the two shopkeeps farewell, Clark took his leave of the armory and walked idly about the marketplace to see if anything would catch his eye.

Me: I guess I could probably come up with something besides a vivid account of sewing. Let's see.

XEQ finishes its repairs, replacing the needle in its quiver. It notices that sounds are beginning to flow out from town. Obviously the townspeople are awakening.
It does not understand sleep. Like all of its brethren, it was made to work night and day. It was not made to kill. Sometimes things do not work as designed.
Suddenly it notices motion in the sparse grass. A ground squirrel pokes its head above the ground, looking around cautiously for signs of danger. Not seeing anything, it comes up and begins to take a dust bath.
Its refreshing daily coating of dirt is interrupted by an arrow. An arrow through its back. Not quite dead, it propels itself back into its burrow, but the arrow keeps it from getting far. It will likely bleed to death.
XEQ doesn't care, it just felt like shooting something.

The Whisperwinds had managed to make it back to their hideout in town. Not wanting to risk the wrath of the villagers after the failed rebellion, they had abandoned the village as quickly as possible. When they made it back to their den, Jack took a head count and realized Balas was missing. The group declared him lost, not caring if he was still alive or not.

We are thieves, Jack thought. One less of us means one less mouth to feed, one less wallet to fill.

Lug retired to his room and Jack lay down to sleep. Rick remained standing in the middle of the room, eyeing Jack's slowly rising and falling chest. His grip on his spear tightened. From the opposite corner of the room, Alan was as a statue, his sights fixed on Rick. Rick turned and glared at Alan, then begrudgingly went to sleep in his quarters.

Alan sighed, then detached himself from the wall and went to sleep.

OOC: Seriously, guys, the whole point of the day off was to give you a chance to develop your characters a bit without the main plot looming overhead. Goat, Serene, and Ike are the only ones with excuses at this point.

Serena

Serena was having a great dream. Surrounded by riches and adoring fans, she was the strongest warrior and mercenary in all of Elibe. She, of course, was gracious and generous with her fame and only took jobs that she felt were just and right. After all, she had the money now! Everything was perfect! Perfect!

And then something roused her from her sleep. Not the sunlight, no. That dastardly sun knew better than to anger the great Serena more than once. This time it was one of the maids, who shook her slightly. The mercenary groaned, wishing that her beautiful dream could continue. The maid continued shaking and Serena growled at her, turning her head slightly to pierce her with an angry glare.

The maid was unfazed. "You asked that I wake you up at this time."

"Yes, yes. Thanks." Serena grumbled, waiting for the maid to leave. When she did, Serena slowly turned out of bed, landing with a soft wuff on the floor. She had no idea why she had asked to be woken up this early. She didn't even have anything planned today either. Well, it didn't really matter in the long run.

Yawning, she left the inn after getting dressed. She might as well take a walk around town. Perhaps she'd bump into someone.

Fortunately for Vastian, he'd bothered to do some asking around when he had failed to contact Clark the time before at the bar. From what he'd heard, Clark was a little unusual for a mercenary: he possessed "sophisticated tastes" when it came to the tools of his profession. Vastian inquired more about the odd answer he had received from the stranger who had answered him thus, and learned that the man he sought had an uncommon knowledge of poisons and the like. Very helpful tip.

Vastian figured he had better odds of catching the mercenary band leader if he waited for him near one of these places. He'd gotten the impression that most of Clark's troop were much more straight-forward in their methods, and wouldn't bother with anything other than a simple weapon. So off he went to the apothecary, hoping Clark would need to restock on whatever it was he bought there sometime soon.

I'm...HUNGRY!

As Clark walked among the vendor stalls in the marketplace, he carefully inspected all of his equipment to see if there was anything he needed at the moment. His swords had begun to grow dull, so he purchased a whetstone, which he stored in a side compartment of his pack. He had left the bloodbane cube with Ralheim and Lamar, so that was not an issue. Aside from the small amount used to light the torches the previous night, Clark's jar of pitch was almost full, and his stock of matches had yet to dwindle.

Clark rummaged in the part of his pack that contained his magic vials, and discovered he was running low. Figures, he thought. I haven't augmented my collection since I first got them.

This meant he'd have to head back to the apothecary, but since Lamar was at the armory working with Ralheim, he'd likely have to deal with Sam, the bumbling assistant. With a sigh, Clark altered his course and walked over to the apothecary.

Sure enough, Lamar was nowhere to be found. The sounds of grunting and heavy objects shifting could be heard coming from the back room. An old habit forced Clark to stand straight rather than lean against the counter as he waited. His eyes wandered and momentarily fell upon another man at the counter. Clad in orange armor and with a face composed of very striking features, the man seemed to ring a bell in Clark's mind, though for the life of him, he couldn't recall where he'd seen him before.

Vastian

Ah! Looks like I've got his attention. Better get this started before the shopkeeper comes out...

Vastian took a few steps toward Clark, raising a hand in greeting.

"Hello, Clark. Was hoping I'd catch you by yourself...last time failed miserably. Don't know what I was thinking, trying to discuss business in the middle of a drunken celebration."

Vastian didn't like the environment: too much he didn't understand about the place and what it sold. Multicolored vials all about, beakers with worn labels written in some obscure dialect or foreign tongue...was it medicine or poison? Mystery always put him a little on edge, and he couldn't afford to be crude or aggresive in a situation such as this.

"Anyhow, the name's Vastian. I'm something of a mercenary, I suppose. The term 'Bounty Hunter' probably fits better under my current circumstances. I've been hired to track down an escaped prisoner. He's slipped by me before, so I've got to be real careful about who I ask for information. I've heard the Guild thought enough of you to give you a group of your own, so I thought you'd be a good place to start. You're my best bet on information so far."

He stopped momentarily, checking to be sure the Commander was listening. He'd hate to have a repeat of the night earlier in the week.

"My client isn't wealthy, but they want revenge. They're willing to pay a surprising amount for a couple of simple townsfolk out East, but then again, I'm sure the community's come together to help their cause...to get to the point, I'm willing to pay for information. Interested?"

Pretend I put something witty here.

(OOC And here is where I start going against any plans I ever had for my plot. VIVA LA OTHER PEOPLE DOING THEIR PART)

Emysia

The castle in the note was not a particularly large one, or a well defended one, but it was thought that it would serve the plan; Myke would come charging to the rescue, he would be eliminated here, leaving no remenants of the past behind. But it had been at least a day since the message was delivered, and still there was no hint that the boy had taken the bait. Emysia was secretly glad of this; she had thought that her sister would be safe as long as she was still needed as a hostage. Her colleagues, however, were less than glad. They couldn't move freely in this new land without all prior opposition erased, and Vassarin had been quite adamant that Myke be delivered to him personally. None of them knew quite what the boy had done to incite such rage in Vassarin, but they felt it best to comply with his orders before he got too angry.

The hostage idea had been a simple one, though Emysia was most disgruntled when she was told her dear younger sister would be the bait to flush the boy out of hiding. Myke, however, had obviously either had matters to attend to that he couldn't leave for a march into a death trap, or he'd somehow concluded that there was no immediate danger to the hostage. Most likely the former; even if Myke had learned how to think rationally, this newfound thought process had only been recent. He'd always thought that the solution to any problem was simple; hit it hard enough enough times and the problem would go away. Now, though, he hadn't come charging in, sword drawn, causing more trouble for himself. Why?

Emysia's colleagues were thinking much the same thing; if the boy had the nerve to pick a fight with Vassarin, he certainly wasn't one of the great minds of the century. It had been concluded (by the masses; Emysia never attending their councils) that more drastic measures would have to be taken with the hostage. Some of the suggestions were as simple as another letter with more than just a few clumps of hair. Some skin, maybe, perhaps a finger. Not all involved were so gentle, however. Some thought that hunting the boy down and slaughtering the girl before his eyes would be the way to go. One, even, a dreadful fanatic, offered the idea of sacrificing her in the most perverse ritual possible; it is noted that the God that this fanatic served took great delight in the suffering of His sacrifical victims. Once she heard of this, though, it became apparent to Emysia that her sister would no longer be safe even if the two of them did their part in these schemes. There was nothing left to think about. They would have to leave. She knew where they would have to go; Myke was the only other person they knew here.

A few tomes and some money were all she needed to gather; all she could gather. There would be no room for luggage the way the two would be travelling. It was risky; but with risk there was hope. Emysia left a quick- and rather insulting- note in her quarters, took everything she needed, and ran through the castle to where her sister was being detained. There were no guards as usual; the girl was too afraid of her captors to leave her room.

"Lilane, take my hand. We're leaving. Now."

The girl did as she was told, thankful to be leaving.

"Close your eyes."

Again, she did as she was told. At this, Emysia also closed her eyes, concentrating on the small town where she had seen Myke previously, hoping against all hope that she wouldn't be interrupting anything. Teleportation was fairly commonplace where they were from, but what was the norm in one world was not so in another, as she had found before.

(OOC: Thank GOD that bit's done, now I can get back to Myke when I have the time and motivation to RP moar. >_>)

OOC: Oooh, exposition! Interesting...

"Hello, Clark. Was hoping I'd catch you by yourself...last time failed miserably. Don't know what I was thinking, trying to discuss business in the middle of a drunken celebration."

Ah, so that's why I recognize him! No wonder I don't remember clearly; I'm surprised I made it back to the inn that night.

The armored man shifted uneasily as he spoke, giving the impression that he was uncomfortable. Is he allergic to something in the shop?

"Anyhow, the name's Vastian. I'm something of a mercenary, I suppose. The term 'Bounty Hunter' probably fits better under my current circumstances. I've been hired to track down an escaped prisoner. He's slipped by me before, so I've got to be real careful about who I ask for information. I've heard the Guild thought enough of you to give you a group of your own, so I thought you'd be a good place to start. You're my best bet on information so far."

A bounty hunter, eh? Clark glanced at Vastian's gear. Doesn't look like much of one. Heavy armor and a big axe...that's slow, slow, S-L-O-W. Usually they're crazed swordsmen, or trigger-happy archers, or at least men with slightly le--

A loud clatter brought Clark back to reality. From the back room, Sam moaned with dismay over the remains of a broken clay pot that housed a rare plant. Jeez, I really let my mind wander. Vastian had apparently noticed the vacant expression on Clark's face, for he had paused momentarily in his speech. He continued when Clark's eyes came back into focus.

"My client isn't wealthy, but they want revenge. They're willing to pay a surprising amount for a couple of simple townsfolk out East, but then again, I'm sure the community's come together to help their cause...to get to the point, I'm willing to pay for information. Interested?"

Clark frowned as he thought. On one hand, money is money, and with his band having just recently formed, while not strapped for cash, they could definitely do with having a little extra on the side. On the other hand, the stranger knew more about Clark than Clark was comfortable with, especially since anyone could be a spy.

Furthermore, the vagueness of "east" was troublesome. They weren't very deep in Etrurian territory, but they were definitely further west than east in the world; "east" could be a variety of places, including Bern, to which Clark had no inclination of returning anytime soon.

Still wary, Clark finally replied, "That depends, Vastian. What kind of information are you looking for?"

Vastian

Tch, how much longer are we going to have to play this game?
That's what I get for being vague...but there's no other way to handle this.

Vastian sighed, desperately wanting to get to the bottom of things. He'd hoped he would get a straight answer for all he said.

"I want to know if my target's around. He can't have come here more than...two week ago, at the earliest. I've been following him fairly close, but I've yet to see him in person..."

At least, that's what he thought. It was very likely his mark was close, but how could he know for sure?

"Listen, he's something of a criminal, if that's any incentive. I can't say the name of the town, as my client would like some degree of anonymity, but I'll divulge that it's east of Khathelet, near Bern's border."

I have to say it, don't I? Clark's made it clear enough he wants detail. I just don't want to go spreading people's grief and shame about...

Vastian forced his eyes shut, looking annoyed. He took a deep breath, sighed, then opened them again as he went on.

"He...well, he knew a young woman, as the clerics would phrase it, against her will. There was another man found dead near the alleyway it occured. Poor girl was traumatized...anyhow, supposedly the night watch caught him shortly after the act and moved in to jail him. Five were slain, two bled out the next morning, and three more were only injured. The murderer made off with just a broken arm, according to the surviving guards."

Vastian's hand had moved its way up to the counter and had started drumming on it. This surprised him. He didn't expect to get as worked up as he did over the whole matter.

"His name's Brannan. Red hair, green eyes. That's all I know. Seen him around?"

Clark nodded his head at appropriate times as he listened, not fully paying attention. Bits and pieces of information managed to make it in...Khathelet...jail...murder...but the one that brought his attention to a point of crystal clarity was the last snippet.

"His name's Brannan. Red hair, green eyes. That's all I know. Seen him around?"

Clark grinned smugly. This is a great opportunity to mess things up over at Byron's haunts. With this kind of trouble, I'm sure they'll be too distracted to compete with us for jobs.

"As a matter of fact, Vastian," Clark said, leaning forward slightly, "I do. He's only a few miles northwest of this town. If my assumption is correct, he'll be..." Clark paused and did some calculations in his head. "About three miles west and four miles north of this town. There will be a building set into the edge of a large forest."

Sam poked his head out of the back room and, alarmed to see that there were customers waiting, scrambled up to the counter. "S-sorry about the delay, Mr. Kallen," he stammered. "W-w-what can I d-do for you?"

"In a moment, Sam," Clark replied curtly. "I'd like to speak to you in private."

Turning back to Vastian, he said, "I'll wish you good luck in bringing the man to justice, for you'll certainly need it. He has fallen in with a group of strong mercenaries..." Clark tapped the counter idly. "It would be folly to go alone."

The hand that had been rapidly drumming on the counter became a fist, quickly rising and slamming into the counter. Vastian muttered a string of curses.

Just as I feared...he's made allies. I'm aware he's been able to charm his way out of similar situations. Well, I won't let that stop me. I'll see him charged as a rapist and a murderer, even if it means dragging his corpse all the way back to Khathelet...

"Sounds like I'll be needing help...I doubt my client can outpay Auncet, but it'll be something. With the down payment, there won't be much to pay you with, but once he's brought back there'll be more to go around."

Vastian withdrew three small bags of gold from his armor and let them rest on the counter.

"That's all I've got with me, and what I've left in my room is just enough to live on. I only want to hire as many of our group as you feel are necessary."

When he received no response within the next few moments, he spoke again, wondering if the coin he produced was insufficient.

"Is that enough?

Clark's jaw nearly hit the counter when Vastian dropped the three sacks of gold. He managed to control himself enough that only a brief flicker in his eyes betrayed his inner emotions, but the surprise still kept him silent for a moment.

"Is that enough?"

"It's enough, alright," he said, a tinge of excitement creeping into his voice. "Tell you what, though. I'll only take two as payment if you join up with us. Consider the third bag your cut of the pay." Clark waited for Vastian's response, eyeing the bags of gold like a vulture.

Surprising reaction...they're paying me better than I thought.

"Of course I'm coming. Wouldn't be right to hire you to do the work and take all the credit myself," He said, taking one of the bags back from the counter and pushing the rest towards Clark. "Besides, it's a bit personal. Just a tad."

Clark's attention was clearly on the gold, so he was certain to raise his voice enough to get it back, so he could go about preparing for the moment he would capture Brannan.

Clark diverted his eyes from the gold long enough to reply to Vastian. "We'll set out in full force, and for good reason; the enemies we will face are a force to be reckoned with." Clark did more counting in his head, then said, "We should have around ten fighters, maybe more. As for time, I've given everyone the day off, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow. We'll set out early."

Inwardly, Clark was practically bouncing up and down. A man like Vastian could deal some damage on the battlefield, yes, but his real value lay in the fact that he could attract such high-paying customers. Clark was willing to part with one bag of gold if it meant hundreds more would rain down in the future.

"Alright. I'll be at the Guild office by the crack of dawn...Commander."

Vastian raised a hand in a casual salute and strode out into the street, leaving Clark to do business with the shopkeeper. His cool exterior concealed racing emotions.

I might just get him tomorrow, after all of this waiting...
Clark's got a powerful force, but I don't know anything about this other group aside from that Clark respects their strength.
And Brannan...he's a hell of a fighter.

Pretend I put something witty here.

Myke

Myke, not wanting to be seen by too many people in this town, had decided to spend the day off in the surrounding wilderness.

If I'd been able to find that thing in a mad panic to get away from them, I'm sure they'd be able to find it over the course of two years. That's assuming they didn't have any people here already before I stumbled into it, which considering how extensive their operations were by then wouldn't surprise me.

But then, I can't say I wasn't expecting them to find her at some point; one girl couldn't hide from the entire Graael Order forever, after all. They'll find me soon enough. Vassarin will kill me, most likely, and he'll either leave this continent alone and move on or take over. Or, hopefully, he won't kill me, I'll find a way to kill him and I'll be free to find a way of sealing that thing off so the Order can't get here anymore. What happens after that is none of my concern. Maybe I'll disappear into the ether and become a hermit. ... Wait, what's that?

"That" was a near-blinding flash of light, leaving Myke clutching at his eyes trying to see what was happening. When the better part of his vision had recovered, he saw small, shimmering sparkles in the air in front of him. He could only watch as those sparkles formed into the silhouettes of two people he could have sworn he knew, and another flash of light made those silhouettes into people.

... Dammit. She's gone and defied the Order. She's gonna get hell for this. More importantly, I'm gonna get hell for this if they catch me with her.

The first person was the woman who had given him the note two nights ago. The second, much to his relief, was the hostage. But this raised a very important question.

"... Why, Emysia? Why? Why did you have to do that?"

The woman merely smiled at him. "Well, you weren't going to do anything about her, were you?"

"I didn't have time to go charging off after Vassarin. Besides, I thought that was the whole idea; lure me into a death trap and kill the only outsider here who knows anything about the Order. Am I right?"

"Yes, actually. Unfortunately for us, the Order wasn't happy with you for not charging to the rescue immediately, and they felt that more drastic measures would be needed to make you comply."

"So you decided to whisk her out of their arms and over here? With a spell that they could easily trace? What on earth were you thinking?"

The girl that the two were talking about merely stood and watched. She'd hoped that her reunion with Myke would be happy, and yet he was anything but. Emysia was also unnerved by Myke's anger. Surely Lilane's return was what he had been hoping for for the last two years?

"I had HOPED that you would look after her for me. Was I mistaken?"

"Well, I can't say I have any choice in the matter now, do I? Wonderful. I'm in a mercenary group, making enemies by the day, and now I have the Graael Order after my blood again? Thank you so much, I've always wanted enemies on all sides!"

This surprised both newcomers. Emysia had thought that Myke would be in hiding, and Lilane would be safe with him. But if he was in the position he said he was in- and from what she had gathered from his thoughts recently, he was- then things would be trickier.

"Perhaps we can work something out?"

"I don't think so. The only way I can see this even remotely working is dragging Lilane into the group I'm with, which I don't particularly want to do."

"Myke. Lilane isn't helpless. She's not as good a mage as I am, but she won't be a burden. And if you're so worried about her, then allow me to join you."

Myke was taken aback by this. He'd suspected that Emysia had been keeping a close eye on her sister while he had been gone, but he hadn't expected her to teach her anything she could use to fight. However, her offer to join the group was reassuring. He knew she could at least look after herself, and having two pairs of eyes making sure Lilane was safe was better than one.

"... Fine. I give up. I don't know how happy the boss'll be with this, but I suppose it's worth a try. But before I do anything, I want to know where Vassarin is."

"Oh? Are you planning on getting yourself killed?"

"No, I'm planning on avoiding him like the plague. I've had enough dealings with him to last me a lifetime."

"So you've started thinking while we were gone. Is there anything else we should know?"

"Not really. We'd best get moving, though. I'd hate to surprise the boss. He has a certain... ruthless streak."

(OOC: You people and your deep and intriguing plots! -=shakes a fist=-)

Serena

Serena yawned as she walked, covering her mouth as she looked blearily around the shops. A free day was awesome and all, but the problem was that there actually wasn't much to do. She was certain the others had some sort of business they wanted to do, but she didn't have anything like that. Probably the result of just being too damn good. At least that's what she liked to think.

'There has got to be something interesting to do.' She thought, half-wishing there was a bandit attack or a thief or even a goddamn fetch quest for her to do. At least she'd get some gold and experience out of the whole deal. And then that would lead to some line of other quests that would eventually culminate into a do or die fight against some ancient demon that would take over the world. And then she would be regaled as a hero of Elibe and she'd get monuments and statues made in her image. And the bards and minstrels would weave stories about her and...

'Actually...that sounds a little too complex.' Serena scratched her head and decided to buy a bag of candy. It always solved her problems. After shelling out a couple of gold for an hour of tasty enjoyment, she decided to take a stroll out of town for a while. Get in touch with nature and stuff like that. As she headed out though, she saw Myke out of the corner of her eye, accompanied by two people.

'Wonder who they are...' Serena shrugged and jogged up to the fellow mercenary, raising a hand in greeting. "Heya Myke, what's up? Who're those two? Friends of yours?"

Myke

"Heya Myke, what's up? Who're those two? Friends of yours?"

Myke froze up. Talking directly to women had never been something he was good at; Emysia and Lilane being near enough the sole exceptions since he'd known them near enough before he could crawl.

"Uh... yeah, you could say that. Meet Emysia and Lilane," he responded, pointing at them in turn, "and with any luck, they'll be working with us in the future. Emysia, Lilane, this is... uhh, actually, I don't think I caught your name."

Dammit! How the hell do you work with someone and not know their name? I feel really stupid now.

"Don't worry 'bout it. It's Serena." She replied, smiling a bit before taking a closer look at Emysia and Lilane. "Hmmmm...So you two might be joining us? Cool, we could always use another good fighter or two. As long as they don't mind doing mercenary work, I think having them along would be great."

"I mean, Myke is a pretty good fighter out there so if you guys are anywhere near his level, I think you three might be some of the best fighters we have! I think...there really are a lot of them in this guild."

Commander...

The word held a new weight for Clark. Just one year ago, he was still in charge of his own company of soldiers, and they all referred to him as Lieutenant, as was his position. With the ever-increasing size of the mercenary band, combined with their tenacity, it felt as though he was once again leading soldiers into battle, rather than the ragtag bunch of sellswords.

The feeling brought mixed emotions. Clark didn't particularly like killing, nor did he dislike it. It was the formalities of being a Lieutenant that he disliked. He much preferred the informality of this group, like the way Serena called him "boss," or how Weyler would give him a mock salute.

Clark caught himself grinning and immediately scowled. No, he thought. I can't get attached to them. Marakken would use them against me for sure.

"Do you ever smile?"

Recens approached Clark with an amused look. Clark's expression cleared momentarily. "I don't get paid to smile," he said flatly.

"Oh, come on, Is--Clark. It's not so bad, see?" To demonstrate, Recens cracked a wide grin, then started laughing when Clark's expression changed to one of disapproval. "We've both been on the run for quite a while," chided Recens, punching Clark's shoulder. "You've gotta lighten up some of the time, or the stress'll kill you."

"It's not stress I'm worried about," said Clark.

"Well, I'd certainly hope not," replied Recens. "That'd be redundant." He snickered again, causing Clark to sigh.

Clark quickly changed the subject. "I noticed something odd the last time we spoke," he said. "You mentioned that Erinyes had been killed, yet you showed very little distress over it. What gives?"

"Blunt as usual, eh?" Recens paused for a moment and pulled the red pendant out from under his shirt again. "This pendant is more than just a trinket passed down from her ancestors. Turns out her family line descends from a warrior of Ilia that made a pact with some ancient god. I don't really know the details of it, but I'd like to look into it someday."

"How does that have anything to do with her death?" demanded Clark.

"I'm getting there!" Recens responded quickly. "The pact is actually quite interesting. You see, as long as the bearer has the will to live, the pendant will heal them of any wound. Observe." Recens drew one of his daggers and, ignoring and alarmed shout from Clark, buried the hilt in his forearm. Blood welled around the blade. Recens winced as he pulled the knife out, but to Clark's surprise, the blood quickly seeped back into the cut and the skin mended itself in seconds.

"Nifty, eh?" Recens said smugly. "It's a lifesaver. As long as you want to live, you will not die. Of course, you can still die from old age, and when you do..." Recens trailed off and fidgeted with the pendant. "The other half of the pact is that when you die, your soul is sealed into the pendant. When she died, Erinyes went into the pendant. She could speak to my mind, and I could think the things I wished to say to her." Recens faltered for a moment. His face darkened, but then went back to normal. "It was awkward communication, but hey, it worked."

Clark stroked his chin, which was growing more and more scruffy with each passing day. "How did she die, then?"

"They tortured her, Clark," Recens replied softly. "They took away her will to live. From what she told me after she died, they raped her, then skinned her." He shuddered violently. "Let's talk about something else. Why haven't you found a woman yet?"

Clark rolled his eyes. "You really have no idea of the gravity of this situation we're in, do you?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he continued, "I cannot trust anyone here. Not fully, anyway. Marakken is a cunning bastard, and it wouldn't surprise me if he had spies lurking in Etruria."

"Really now..." Recens said, mocking Clark by stroking his own chin, which was clean-shaven. "Then why, may I ask, did you rush so quickly to the side of the swordswoman with red locks when fighting those villagers?"

"She was being attacked by their leader," Clark replied through gritted teeth. "You know as well as I do that they stopped coming once I took him down."

"Sounds like an excuse to me," Recens teased. "Anyway, it was lovely speaking with you again, but we are technically rivals now. If I'm gone much longer, my fellow mercenaries may begin to question where I've been." With a wave of his hand, Recens headed off in the direction of the Fury's barracks.

Clark frowned when he realized that Recens had not been carrying anything from the market. Did he come all this way just to mess with me?

Brannan

The swordsman woke early that morning, hoping that there would be less foot traffic about the barracks. He was unsure just how many mercenaries occupied the building, and he didn't care to meet the ones he didn't know all in one go. He went back to the doorway, around the stairs, to the armory...

Better familiarize myself with the armory. I may be needing it soon...

He returned to his room when he was more sure of his surroundings, careful to move quietly past Jane's door. He wasn't sure if she was awake, or if she was even still within, but he thought it best not to risk it.

With the door closed behind him, he removed his jacket and threw it across the bed. Brannan looked over the crude splint he had constructed for his left arm: little more than scrap metal and old bandages. It lacked the mechanism for keeping the limb straight, but he had recovered enough so that it was no longer necessary. It was small enough that it was difficult to spot with his clothing over it, and it gave his arm support in battle. That's all that mattered.

Undoing the bandages with care, he dissembled the splint, laying the pieces out carefully over his jacket. He flexed the arm, testing it, growing familiar with it's feel. Less painful than before; he was gradually making progress. He lowered himself to the ground and assumed a push-up position, letting all of his body weight rest on that one hand. He brought himself down slowly, trying to judge whether or not the pain was the healthy kind, or a warning. He repeated the motion, confident it was the former. He continued the action, thinking to himself all the while.

Recens knows Clark somehow, a different way from the others. That's not so important...as Ognus said, Clark was part of this group, too. They must've worked together somewhere else. The thing that worries me is whether or not Recens knows about my history...I haven't seen him anywhere before, but he could still know...after all, that other guy was a complete stranger to me, too...they've been advertising.

He fell flat on his face, his arm exhausted. He raised himself up and continued exercising with his right hand laid across the floor for good measure.

I think I need to have another talk with Recens.

It was an hour later when he had finished his routine. He dressed himself again, placed his sword at his belt, and walked down to wait at the doorway for his comrade to arrive.

Weyler

Weyler slept in late. He had little else to do for the day, so he figured he might as well enjoy the luxury. Getting up early for Guild related matters was quite taxing, after all.

After a nicer breakfast than he usually enjoyed (with time and gold to spare, why not?) at a restaurant across from the inn he occupied, he returned to his room for a bit more study. He hoped to gain a greater understanding of all magic, but at present he could only "go through the motions"...he could through a few hand signs around, read from a tome, or recite a spell, but his knowledge of the theory behind it was poor. His goal was to gain greater power through an enhanced understanding.

Maybe I'll ask Jabin for some help later. It's far from easy studying this alone...

At last growing frustrated with the snail-like pace of his progress, he lef the inn once more to wander the marketplace, hoping he'd run into someone familiar.

Pascal

Thud thud thud.

What the hell is going on? Can't they be quieter?

Thud thud thud.

Argh, so loud! And why is my head so sore and foggy?

Pascal opened his eyes, and regretted it. Flinching at the bright, morning light, his eyes shrieked in pain and hid under his eyelids. The thudding continued, and his head seared in pain. He could barely move, and his thoughts were sluggish.

Am I... dying?

At this moment, a rather good looking lady stepped into the room, bent down to look at him and sighed. Pascal's eyes were bloodshot, he face a bit rest and he was groaning in pain. Finally, the thudding stopped.

Wow, heaven sure sucks. I was at least expecting wings.

The woman spoke softly, but condescendingly.

"Suffering from a hangover, are we? Unfortunately for you, it's almost time to leave unless you plan on paying for another night. We have other guests who want a room, and not all of them are pitiful drunks.

Oh. Well, that explains a lot. But sweet Elimine, this is torture! How much did I drink?!

"Could you speak a little more softly, miss? I can't take the noise. But ugh, this early?"

The nursed sighed again, tapping the floor with her foot impatiently. Pascal's head recoiled enough for his shoulders to block his ears.

"Alright, alright. I'll give in. Let me get my stuff, and I'll go."

Smiling with her success, the woman left the room, each step producing a thud that made him cringe.

Urgh. Well, I know what I want to do first thing today. Find the nearest fountain and dunk my head into it. Urgh, never again am I going to drink.

On the way out through the bar, an image of a great looking woman leaving the bar with a huge grin on her face flashed by.

Please, no. I think it's better that I don't remember...

Recens took slightly longer than normal to return to the barracks of the Fury. For someone who had grown up in Bern, spending most of his time among mountainous landscapes, the cheery greenery and rolling hills of the Etrurian countryside were a welcome reprieve. The air even tasted different, as though the feeling of calm that spread across the land were tangible.

When he finally returned to the barracks, Recens debated on whether or not to enter through his window again, but decided against it, as it would seem suspicious if someone saw him. Opting for the front door, Recens strode in casually and walked towards his room.

Oddly enough, Brannan was waiting for him outside of his bedroom door. Recens walked over to him nonchalantly and said, "What's up, Brannan?"

Brannan

"Good to see you, Recens. I was hoping we could talk for just a moment..." Brannan motioned towards his own room and opened the door. He entered, and the Ranger followed him inside. If he was suspicious of anything, he masked it well.

"I'll have to be blunt, since I'm sure there's things that'll come up in discussion that neither of us would like the others to hear."

Brannan paused and removed his sword from his belt, placing it a bit outside arm's reach on a table by the bed. He didn't want to appear threatening.

"Ognus discovered you were missing last night. He believes it's got something to do with Clark, since I told him you seemed to recognize Kallen on the night of the Auncet matter. He doesn't seem too worried about it, so I suppose you're trustworthy enough...I really don't care what it is you went to talk about, as long as it's got nothing to do with me."

Can I really believe any answer he gives me, if he is aware of my history?

"But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'd like to ask you in confidence, Recens, about something personal, before I take it up with Byron. I can't be sure you'll honor me on this, but from what I've seen of you on the battlefield, I can trust in your convictions, at least."

Brannan looked away, clenching his jaw. He might have to move on again if the answer he received wasn't what he had hoped.

"I...I've got some criminal charges against me in Lycia. There's the possibility a bounty hunter is following me. I'm not sure he's on the right trail, but there's always the chance...would that fact make the lot of you turn your backs on me?"

Recens was startled by Brannan's revelation. Surprisingly, he felt his heart soften towards the tall swordsman. He's a refugee...just like me... Not that he could let Brannan know that, though. Clark had warned him against it, and he'd already been foolish enough to fail to conceal his identity.

Putting his hand on Brannan's shoulder, he replied, "I'm not sure. On the one hand, Byron is very honorable, and I'm sure he and the others would fight to defend you. On the other hand..." Recens paused and tilted his head slightly, unsure of how to say what he had to say. "Well...if this bounty hunter is persistent, and if he poses a serious threat to the operations of the Fury...I hate to say it, but I wouldn't put it past some of them to abandon you to save themselves." For emphasis, Recens jerked his head in the direction of Jane's room. "They may be honorable mercenaries, but they're still mercenaries."

OOC: (Haha, well, it's working pretty well for me, too. It's coming along very nicely considering we didn't talk it out ahead of time. I'm eager to see what you've got in store, though.)

Brannan sighed, resting his fingers on his brow for a moment. Some may have interpretted the action as something out of sorrow or anxiety, but such complex emotions had become unccommon to Brannan. He was simply frustrated.

Well, considering the circumstances, I'm better off just telling Byron now. I imagine it would cause a good deal more upset if it was sprung on them out of the blue someday...even if I end up having to run, I'll at least have their respect for being honest.

"I see. Thanks for the advice. I think I ought to tell Byron myself, though... it wouldn't be right to hide something like that, especially from one who's given me a chance to start anew."

Brannan looked up at Recens in shock. The day before, he had never imagined the man would show him any consideration outside of their work. Brannan was well aware that the way he worked in combat had the potential to disgust others, and perhaps even form a low opinion of him. That didn't bother him much anymore. While he certainly wasn't repulsed by the way he dealt with his foes, he wasn't exactly a sadist, either. He merely exploited the value of psychological warfare: presenting his opponents with the possibility of a gruesome end was one such tactic.

It's how I kept myself alive when I was young and inexperienced.
I won a good deal of fights because I kept my enemies afraid. They were stronger and more skilled than me, and I terrified them.
Is there shame in that?

Others had made their dislike of Brannan and his ideas of fighting clear enough before, and he had gotten the impression that Recens was a similar case. Yet here Recens was, offering to stand by him in a crisis.

"I...well, I don't know what to say. Thank you. I'd really appreciate that."

He picked up his weapon and made preparations to leave from the room.

"...I'm not sure where to find Byron. Could you lead me to him?"

Recens nodded. "This way." The pair left Brannan's room, walked down the stairs, passed through the kitchen, and entered the rearmost room of the barracks. Byron's room was only slightly larger than the other rooms in the building, and it was furnished in a similar fashion. On his wall hung two very different axes, one for swinging and one for throwing, as well as a dark-colored greatbow. Parchment was scattered about a table in the corner, mostly dealing with past missions and maps of the surrounding area.

Byron himself was munching away on a roll while gazing out the window. Recens cleared his throat to get Byron's attention. He turned to face the two of them, swallowed what he had been chewing, and asked, "What can I do for you two?"

Brannan waited a moment to form his answer. He'd learned that phrasing can often take the edge off things.

"Well, Byron," said Brannan, appearing calm and collected, "I decided I ought to tell you something about myself. I wasn't sure it mattered before, but I'd hate to keep it secret and have it rear its ugly head later, and drag you and yours into this mess."

He cleared his throat. He'd been through this process before, and somehow the next bit was always hardest.

" I...was accused of a crime in a town on the eastern side of Lycia. I killed eight men: seven of the town's night watch, and one...civilian...a lord's son travelling about. I'm worried they may have sent a bounty hunter after me. I can't be sure, but as there's someone rather wealthy involved, I'd imagine he'd be willing to pay a good deal for revenge."

There. Wasn't so hard that time around.

"Now, the way I see it, there's three ways this can end. You let me stay and continue to work, you kick me out of the group and turn me away, or you jump me right here and wait until the bounty hunter - if there's even one - comes and finds me, and throws a cut of whatever loot he's got on him to you. I'd like to know which. The least you could do is give me a fair start, if it happens to be that last one."

He flashed a grin, but it had the look of a desperate animal baring its fangs.

Byron stared blankly at Brannan, then sighed. "There's not much of a choice in that decision, lad," he said wearily. "You've put me on the spot. We'll protect you, but you'll be helping us protect you." Byron turned to Recens. "You needed something?"

Recens shook his head. "I just came to convince you if you needed convincing."

The corners of Byron's mouth curved into a small smile, for he understood why Recens would take Brannan's side in this issue. Mere weeks ago, Recens had come to Byron under similar circumstances. "Will that be all, then?" Byron asked the two men.

"Y-yes. Yes, of course." Brannan never imagined it'd be that simple. "Again, there's no problem so far...but it's possible."

He took a slight bow. "Thank you for your generosity." He almost turned and left right there, until he thought better of it and repeated the bow towards Recens. "I'm grateful to the both of you."

With that, he exited the room, walking quickly towards his own.

I never thought they'd actually keep me...this calls for a major change in plans.

He sat himself down in a chair occupying the corner of the room directly across from the doorway, thinking over all that had occured. He'd confessed his past toa few others before on his way to Etruria, both of which responded negatively. Naturally he had to flee, though on a few occasions he managed to rob and kill his would-be identifiers in their sleep. It was reassuring to think he had a place to rest at last.

Hell, I'm starting to really like these people.

"Thank you," Recens said quietly to Byron. Byron looked at him, puzzled.

"What for?" he asked.

"What you just did."

Byron shook his head. "When I took you in, you said the might of the army of Bern could be following you." Byron scratched his beard a moment, then continued. "Maybe I thought you were crazy, maybe I'm just crazy. I'd like to think it's a little of both. But for whatever the reason, we took you in anyway, and I've yet to see a wyvern on the horizon."

Recens let a thin smile form on his face, then gave Byron a mock-salute and returned to his room on the first floor.

Once Vastian had left, Clark resumed speaking with Sam. "Sam, I need to place another order," Clark said in a low tone.

Sam nodded. "What'll it be, sir?"

"Don't call me 'sir,'" Clark muttered under his breath. "I need you to get me another shipment of the magic vials, preferably ones enhanced with fire magic." Clark paused, then remembered something else. "Oh, and please try to label the damn things. Every time I use one, it's a mystery as to what I'm throwing until it explodes."

"But they're already la--" Sam began to say, but wilted under a stern look from Clark. "I-I mean y-yes, I'll lable them b-better."

"Good man," Clark said, then left the shop.

The rest of the day was very uneventful. Clark had no other plans for that day, so he headed back to the inn, dropped off his gear, and stripped down to his breeches and boots, then tucked his serrated dagger into his belt and left the town to go for a jog. Clark headed north, then west, then back south, skirting the edge of town but never going all the way to the desert.

Vastian

Vastian sat brooding in his room, hunched over and fingers weaved before his face. He had completed his exercises for the day, exhausting his body but not his mind. With his target so close at hand, how could he not be anxious?

As a bounty hunter, he often allowed rage to get the better of him. He found nothing guided an arm or put fear in an enemy better than righteous fury, and he liked to think that he was the punishment of those he was sent to track, not whatever trial or consequence awaited his targets where they were wanted. This one, however, was different. He had to restrain himself in his anger.

The first of Brannan's victims that night before was of noble blood, and Vastian knew him well. He was the youth he had grown up with during his stay at House Persantius, Bernard. Vastian was picked out from an orphanage not far from Castle Persantius specifically to act as a companion to the boy. He had loved him as a brother once - until he had been so cruelly thrown out of the noble house, cast aside to live as an orphan once more. Part of him was glad to see him dead, retribution for whatever hand he had in Vastian's exile, yet he was stricken with grief regardless. His heart had softened somewhat to his former brother when he had heard of the crime: he was the first to die, no doubt slain in his chivalrous defense of the raped girl.

Vastian couldn't help but sympathize with an honorable man. That, and the pay to avenge his death was good. He took the job to find Bernard's killer without a second thought.

... uh-huh.

Brianna

Brianna was sitting in her room at the inn, nursing a rather magnificent hangover that was both a product of the night before and of the drinking contest a few days before that. Grinning, Brianna played tricks with a gold coin, making it 'walk' across her hands with a speed only very well-trained and nimble fingers can achieve. Then she flipped it up into the air and caught it between her thumb and forefinger. Looking at it closely, the grin disappeared and she frowned intently at it.

Why do I feel guilty? Pascal had it coming!

After a rather delightful meal; great food and a drunken womanizer for entertainment, Brianna had helped him to his room and unceremoniously left him there, having taken full advantage of his generosity. Hoping to impress her, Pascal had ordered the most expensive wines, which, Brianna admitted to herself, were well worth the price. The empty bottles were scattered along the floor of Brianna's room, along with a couple of plates of leftovers she'd snuck out of the place. She had done it before with a few assholes who had annoyed her, but she'd never felt bad about it before.

Maybe it's because he didn't turn out to be a complete jerk, just a bit of an idiot? Yeah, that's it... I feel bad about leading on someone who wasn't actually that bad. Well, stuff it. What's done is done. Life goes on, I'll probably never see him again so it doesn't matter one whit.

Gulping down some water to cleanse her system, Brianna opened up her pack and picked out a tattered book. Crawling back into bed, she opened it up at the beginning and started to read the well-known story of a group of heroes fighting enemy soldiers and dragons to save the world. She liked reading about those kinds of battles; wars that had been about fighting against evil empires and saving people. Wars in reality were all about territory and pointless bickering. The book opened up a world full of honour and valour for Brianna, and allowed her to fight on, wrapping herself in the illusion and glory.

And so she spent the entire day resting and reading, venturing out only to get food. A day of resting (and no alcohol) would make her ready for the next fight to come their way.

Clark decided to head off to the inn and go to sleep early. He wanted to be at peak awareness for tomorrow, considering that confronting Byron and his mercenaries could easily lead to a bloody brawl between the two groups. After stripping off his gear and doing a few sets of push-ups and sit-ups as a last-minute workout, Clark lay down on his bed and drifted off to sleep quickly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Recens spent the rest of the day roaming the area near the barracks, noting the seasonal changes that had occurred since his arrival two months prior. Satisfied with his observations, he retired to his quarters and promptly fell asleep.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Kajan let out a sigh as he leaned against Arganek's side. The soldiers had been flying for three days straight, and it was beginning to be a bit monotonous. A small faction had split off as they flew over Khathelet; Marakken had chosen to divide their current force into several scout forces that would meet up again once Isaac's location was discovered. He was unsure of where his squad would be sent, but Kajan hoped against hope that he would be the one to find the rogue duke. He closed his eyes and faded out to the rhythmic sound of Arganek's breathing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A young boy dressed in the clothing of a page sat beneath a tree reading a novel. A smile came to his face as he read of the heroic exploits of knights and the daring rescues of damsels. Levange Vergant walked over casually and squatted on his hams in front of the boy.

"Enjoying your book, Isaac?" he asked.

Isaac looked up and smiled. "I sure am, papa!"

"Remember, Isaac, when you're here, you have to refer to me as 'sir.'"

"Yes, sir!"

Levange smiled and tousled Isaac's hair. "Your mother is very proud of you. I'll admit that I'm impressed at your ardor towards higher education." He sighed wistfully. "It's not something I could have done, anyway."

Isaac grinned. "When I grow up, I'm gonna be a knight like you, papa!"

The smile returned to Levange's face. "You'll make a fine knight, son."

"Hey Isaac, c'mere!" called Jason DuGrine. Isaac looked up from his book to see what he wanted. When Jason saw that he had Isaac's attention, he shouted, "Let's have a quick bout!"

Isaac grinned and shut his book, then raced Jason back to the barracks. He slid his book underneath his pillow and grabbed his wooden sparring sword, then headed out to the front of the building with Jason.

The two saluted each other, then took their stances. They strafed in a circle for a time, both waiting for the other to make the first move. The only sound that could be heard was the rustling of the grass by the wind. Isaac was sure Jason could hear his heartbeat as it thudded in his ears, but if he could, he wasn't letting on.

Finally, DuGrine took the first strike. He feinted, then flipped his sword in a short arc and stabbed at Isaac's right side. Isaac narrowly parried the blow and attempted to ripost, but Jason was too quick and beat his sword away, then took a swing that connected with Isaac's side.

Isaac winced and clutched at his side. Jason took advantage of his opponent's hesitation to deliver a cruel blow to Isaac's knee, causing him to drop to a kneeling position. Isaac cried out, but quickly silenced himself.

Jason circled around him and pressed the tip of his sparring sword into the back of Isaac's neck. "Good fight, Vergant, but it appears I am the victor."

Isaac massaged his side and knee. "I guess so. Looks like I need to practice more."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clark rolled out of bed early as usual and went about his morning routine. This time, however, he did extra sit-up and push-ups, and put a slightly sharper edge on his weapons using his newly-bought whetstone. Once he was finished, he pulled out a vial from his pouch and examined it closely. Apparently there was some way to tell the difference between them, but he couldn't figure it out. Every figure on the side of the vial looked the same anyway.

Shrugging it off, Clark put on his damaged armor and also a traveller's cloak. By his reckoning, Byron would be far more receptive of their business this morning if he at least thought they weren't about to kill one another. Clark examined himself in the mirror. He scowled at the mop of hair and scraggly beard and mustache that ringed the face that looked back at him. He knew that remaining unshaven was his best bet at avoiding visual detection, but it still got on his nerves. Satisfied with the rest of his appearance, Clark put on his remaining gear and left for the Guild.

Melanie greeted him when he walked in. "What are you planning to do today, Clark?" she asked, curious.

"No missions, Mel," he responded. "Just personal business."

Melanie nodded sagely, knowing Clark never disclosed anything too personal about himself. She returned to her task of sorting through papers while Clark waited for everyone else to show up.

Having nothing to do, XEQ had decided to count the bricks in the wall. And then did it again and again and again. There had been a minor dust storm at one point in the night, but that had not distracted the archer. These clothes are good for more than just concealing its identity.
XEQ finishes the 27th count as it sees the commander coming. It waits for him to enter, gives him a few seconds, then heads in. It manages to hear only the very end of a conversation between Clark and the woman behind the desk. Something about business. This is good, since business for a mercenary means fighting, and XEQ wants to fight, especially after spending twenty-four hours standing outside counting bricks.

Vastian entered the room, handling the door with considerably more care then he was tempted to. He was growing impatient, with his goal so close within reach, and he hadn't been able to fully regain his calm since the day before.

He walked quickly up to Clark, not acknowledging the secretary with even a simple glance. The tempo of his step suggested violence, given the scowl set upon his face. And violence was what he had come for, but those he sought to inflict it upon lied elsewhere. The commander of the mercenary party was to be his ally.

"So, here I am." He looked about the room, and found it the same as it had been the first time he had come around, complete with the odd cloaked figure he had met at the celebration nights ago. "Not as early as I had originally planned...but there's only so much waiting I'd be able to take. I hope your men arrive shortly.

"Perhaps while we wait, you'd let me in on whatever you have planned so far? It's not that I don't trust the strength of those you lead, but Byron and his associates aren't exactly pushovers."

Clark noted that Vastian was brimming with energy as he entered the building, but not from excitement; rather, from anger. This was a good sign, since it meant that he'd likely to be willing to go along with Clark's plan.

"I'm glad you asked, Vastian," he began. "You're correct in your assessment of the Fury; they aren't going to go down quickly. That said, I believe I have a plan that may work."

Clark began pacing, as he usually did when outlining a strategy. "Byron is a man of honor. He cannot allow himself to stand in the way of a score to be settled between two others." Clark turned and faced Vastian, making eye contact. "This is what we are banking on. I am sure he will protect Brannan, but if we were to make a challenge, like, perhaps, for you," Clark nodded at Vastian, "to challenge him to a duel, he couldn't refuse."

Stopping to assess Vastian's reaction, he asked, "What do you think? It will give you a chance to tear into him unchecked, and it's definitely our best chance of survival. Of course, if you should find yourself against the ropes..." Clark trailed off for suspense, then continued. "Just kidding. We'll back you up. I hope it doesn't come to that, but if we must, we will."

Vastian smiled at this, an uncommon expression for him. Things couldn't have worked out better.

"Excellent. I wouldn't have it any other way. I want to take him down myself..."

Brannan...would he really be able to beat him one-on-one? Vastian was experienced, or else he wouldn't have been given he job to track Brannan down, but up until now, he had never toyed with the idea of potential failure. From what he'd heard, Brannan was an exceptional swordsman, one who'd done work similar to Vastian's own up until the incident. He'd be a cunning, cold-hearted opponent, and a challenge to be sure, but Vastian was damn well going to try.

"Naturally, you'll receive pay even if Byron's mercenaries stand down and let it all play out, but I'd like to keep you around anyway. In the event I fail to defeat him in a duel...I'm not about to walk away. He's coming with me."

------

Weyler strode in the room with a grin, well-rested and light-hearted from a vacation day. He nodded toward Melanie in greeting.

He was ready to approach Clark and ask about what job he had prepared for the group, until he saw the armored man in orange talking with the commander off to the side. He didn't want to interrupt, but he thought it might have something to do with the business for the day, so he took a seat against the wall and tried to listen in as inconspiculously as he could.

"In the event I fail to defeat him in a duel...I'm not about to walk away. He's coming with me."

"I like the way you think," said Clark. Someone entered the building, but he didn't turn around to see who it was. "We'll wait for everyone to arrive, then set off immediately."

Clark walked over to the tall, black-garbed figure. As he approached, Clark realized the..."thing"...was much larger than he was. He looked up at where he supposed its head was curiously. Returning to his business-like manner, he said, "Ah, I don't belive I caught your name."

XEQ hears the commander talking with Vastian about a duel and some people named Byron and Brannan. When their conversation finishes, the archer notices Clark approaching.
"Ah, I don't believe I caught your name," begins the man, looking at XEQ.
The cloaked figure shakes its head, confirming the commander's statement. Then it just continues to stand there, silent. Realizing that Clark is still waiting for something, it points to Vastian.

Clark followed the direction of the cloaked figure's finger and realized he was pointing at Vastian. Clark shot him a questioning look, unsure of what was going on.

"His name's XEQ. He doesn't seem to talk much." Vastian looked the cloaked man over again, wondering if there was any other way he could recognize him other than his size and manner of dress. Did he wear anythign else? Was it even the same person he met before? There was no face or voice to identfiy, so just about anybody could be under that hood...

"I met him on the night of the...when was it...it was some celebration. You took us all to some bar, remember? That's when I made his acquaintance. Haven't made much conversation with him, but he strikes me as one who takes his work very seriously."
