Myke, Emysia and Lilane Dawn couldn't come too soon for Myke. Sleeping in the wilderness outside the town wasn't very comfortable, and raised the unpleasant notion of keeping watch at night, but Emysia and Lilane had taken him by surprise and he couldn't afford to cover another room at the inn. Still, he very much doubted that there would be another day of no work, so he woke his unexpected guests and they made their way to the guild. Myke advised the two women to remain silent until spoken to- more out of respect than of any real worry that something could go horribly wrong- and lead them into the guild. --- Tookie Meanwhile, a couple of miles away from the town, another young boy was waking up, though this to something very different. This boy woke to a horse nudging him, and in a very different situation to the one he fell asleep in. Wait, what the hell? Why am I on the ground? Why is there a horse next to me? Why am I dressed like this? And what are these books? Curious, and always enjoying a good read, the boy started nosing through the nearest book. This... this is a magic tome! But... that means... this is... I... Something dawned on the boy. His small joke had been picked up on by a higher power. A higher power that expected him to play the part he had made. "God? I am going to ****ing MURDER you." |

Vastian explains to Clark how he met XEQ. After this, the commander questions the archer on its tree-climbing ability. XEQ shrugs. It has never before tried to climb a tree. The only trees where it came from were fruit trees in the garden, and these were only slightly taller than the silent being. It holds up one finger, then leaves the Guild building. Once outside, it scans the horizon for the nearest tree. The first one it finds is an old tree with only a few living branches. XEQ does not see any flaw with this and marches up to it. It reaches for the lowest branch and pulls on it to lift itself up. Instead, the branch breaks off. No others are low enough to grab, so the strange entity tries to climb by punching holes in the tree to use as hand- and foot-holds. This succeeds at first, but once it is a couple of feet off the ground, it notices the tree bending towards it. A few more feet and the archer is at an angle of about 60 degrees to the ground. Soon, the inevitable happens and the tree breaks, falling down with XEQ below it. The archer returns to the building with a few new tears in its clothing. It goes up to Clark and shakes its head. |

Clark waited for the mysterious being to return. When he received a response, he sighed. "So much for a vantage point..." he muttered. "Well, if you're a decent shot with that bow, we could certainly use you for cover in this mission. You'd have to hide, then spring up if something were to go wrong." |

Brannan "What in hell--?!" The alleyway opened on two ends. Brannan was closer to the western opening, while the nobleman was on the eastern side. The quivering girl lay somewhere between them, sobbing softly. Blood flowed softly from some of the tears in her clothing. The nobleman had stumbled backward upon seeing Brannan, but the shock of his presence faded quickly enough for the man to defend himself. He made a grab at the spear he had lain at his side... and missed. His right hand trembled as he made a second attempt, this time a successful one. All the while he couldn't break away from the swordsman's gaze. He couldn't help but clench his jaw as he heard the grating of Brannan's sword being pulled slowly from its sheath. The man, shaken as he was, clearly intended to kill Brannan. The swordsman smiled and took a step forward. Then another, faster than the last. Soon he was sprinting towards the nobleman, who could do little more than wait for the impact. With a scream, the nobleman thrust out recklessly with his weapon. Not an entirely clumsy movement; the lance's wielder wasn't entirey unskilled. Brannan stepped to the right, avoiding the sharp tip of the lance, and grabbed for the shaft of the weapon with his left hand. He turned and cut the nobleman's weapon arm from just below the elbow in a one strike. The color drained from the wounded man's face. His mouth opened as if he was about to scream again, but no sound came. The last thing he saw was his own spear coming at him, aimed at the vulnerable flesh of his throat. Brannan awoke. He'd never had that dream before. He pondered its importance for a moment, then rose from bed and prepared himself to meet with the others.. Edited by goatfish, Nov 16 2008, 01:02 AM.

(OOC: Hahaha holy hell I missed a lot.) Serena and Valentia Serena once again began her morning routine by getting woken up by one of the inn's employees and threatening that same employee with death if she continued lingering in the room. After the customary stretching and equipment checks, she buckled on her swords and headed off towards the Guild Office. At least, that's what she would have done if she hadn't gotten sidetracked by a sign hanging from of the armory's window. "A sale, huh? Hmmmm....Eh, I'm sure the boss can afford to wait another half hour or something." She said to herself as she strode inside the store, intent on using her gold to get something pretty. And useful. Can't forget useful. A whole hour later, Serena strode out of the armory with a brand new leather sheath for her favorite sword, a good whetstone, and a small dagger for some extra protection. Just in case she somehow didn't have her swords with her. Happy and whistling to herself, she strode into the Guild Hall with a radiant smile on her face. Giving everyone a cheerful wave, she plopped herself in a chair and brought her new sheath to her lap, examining it. She already knew it was perfect, but it never hurt to fawn over it just a little while longer. Valentia, on the other hand, had just spent the last two days of her break trying to find any clue to the location of her father with no luck. It was getting frustrating, to say the least, and the break really did nothing to alleviate her mood. So she strode into the Guild Hall with an irritated look on her face, sat down somewhere, and closed her eyes. She just hoped that something would come up. Something. |

When the man didn't respond, Clark walked over to the chairs and took a seat as he waited for everyone else to arrive. Serena came in next and waved at everyone, smiling as usual. Clark felt the corners of his mouth turn upward in a light smile, then realized he must look like a fool and quickly returned to his emotionless expression. |

OOC: Well, some stuff obviously happened that prevented me from posting when I wanted to...anyway, here we go... As the seconds went by, Clark's patience began to wear thin. Grumbling under his breath about lack of dedication, he walked toward the front door of the building. "We've waited long enough. It's time to leave." Clark waited while everyone else filed out through the door and stopped Vastian until the room had cleared. He looked him straight in the eye when he spoke. "How certain are you that you will be able to defeat Brannan?" |

The corner of Vastian's mouth turned up in a distorted, humorless smile. "It's hard to say. Haven't seen him in action before, I've only heard of his exploits. I've come face-to-face with targets just as infamous, if not more so, and had no trouble, but I like to play the cautious side." Vastian looked over the group that had gathered. A bit smaller than the one he had seen at the bar a few nights ago, but with himself and Clark included, they counted nine strong. Vastian wasn't certain this would be enough, but time was of the essence here. It was possible Brannan could hear word that people had come to capture him, and then he'd have to begin tracking him all over again... "This group looks like it'll do fine. My only concern is the strength of the Fury. If you think we can hold up against them, then there's no reason we shouldn't set out immediately." |

Vastian looked at the bag at the side of Clark's waste, listened to the clinking sound of the glass vessels as Clark touched the area. He doesn't strike me as one to take unnecessary chances, so that glass must be thick...I wonder what sort of material those vials contain... "I've no complaints. I'm not exactly married to the concept of a fair fight with Brannan...it'd just be preferable. If worse comes to worse, by all means, feel free to throw some chemicals around." With this new bit of knowledge, Vastian's confidence in the group's chances was reinforced. He feared his impatience would get the best of him again, with his eagerness to get about to business taking hold. |

Satisfied with Vastian's response, Clark motioned for him to follow him out the door. "We'd better go catch up with the others," he said. Clark took off at a light jog and positioned himself at the front of the small group as usual. The path to the barracks of the Fury was such a well-known route to him that he only paid attention to where he was going halfway, letting his mind wander instead. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After two months' worth of practice, Isaac strode confidently into the mess hall and declared for all to hear, "Jason DuGrine, I challenge thee to a rematch!" Jason stood up and walked over with a slight swagger, still smug from his previous victory. "What's all this, Vergant? Think you can take me?" Jason moved close enough to Isaac that he could feel his breath, which reeked of lentils. "Forget about last time?" Isaac pushed him away. "No. I've come to prove that I've gotten better," Isaac jammed the tip of his sparring sword into the stone floor. "In front of our peers." A soft whisper grew into a raucous clamor as the audacious statements were passed through the crowd of pages busy eating their noontime meal. Jason knew that to deny Isaac the duel would be to admit cowardice, so he had no choice but to accept. Not that it mattered; he wanted to give that whelp Vergant another pouding. The boys exited the building and took their positions facing each other from opposite ends of the courtyard. A moment later, a low rumble could be felt as the entire crowd of pages thundered out of the mess hall, bristling by one another, all eager to claim a good view of the fight that would ensue. Two large boys patted Jason on the shoulders and whispered something imperceptible to him, then backed away and stared at Isaac, arms crossed, their faces as stone. Their piercing gaze troubled Isaac, but he ignored them and turned his attention to Jason. His heartbeat quickly rose, and he could feel the blood pounding in his ears. The tip of Isaac's sword twitched, and he realized that his hand was shaking. Taking a deep breath, Isaac stopped the frantic movement of his arm and began strafing the perimeter of the fighting area, keeping both eyes on Jason. Jason made the first move. Striking low at Isaac's shins, he lashed out and flipped his blade around at the last second, sending it toward Isaac's sternum. Jason's eyes widened when Isaac parried the blow, unfazed by the feint. DuGrine barely reacted in time to block Isaac's ripost, which Isaac followed by launching a vicious assault, driving Jason back farther each time. Cursing under his breath, Jason took a slightly wider stance and began swinging wildly at Isaac, which worked surprisingly well at stopping his attack. Isaac glanced at their swords, then Jason's feet, and formulated a plan. Waiting for the momentary break between Jason's swings, Isaac loosened his grip on his sword. When the moment came, he threw it up in an arc over Jason's head, distracting him. Isaac quickly dove between Jason's legs, sliding in the dust and scraping his chest, then hopped up and caught his sword as Jason turned around. Jason prepared to swing but stopped cold when he realized that the tip of Isaac's sword was pressed to the side of his head. He gritted his teeth and dropped his sword. For a moment the crowd of pages was stunned, but then cheering erupted from them. The match had been very entertaining, apparently. Smiling, Isaac followed everyone back into the mess hall. Out of the corner of his eye, Isaac saw the two larger boys from before speaking in hushed tones with Jason. The trio shot him a dirty look, then walked away from the building. |

Serena Serena looked up as she heard Clark say something about leaving. Leaping to her feet, she immediately hooked her sheath back to her waist and gave him a mock salute before striding outside. She stopped a little bit off, whistling to herself. 'Hey wait...I never did ask what we were going to be doing today.' She stopped in her tracks and immediately headed back to the guild hall, only to see Clark talking to one of the new people...Vastian was his name. She frowned a bit, wondering what would be so important to stall the mission. She pondered interrupting them, but she decided that Clark would fill them in whenever he needed to. It's not like he had to explain every single thing...although that would be nice. So with a shrug, she jogged back to the rest of the group. When Clark rejoined them, she jogged up to his side and flashed him an apologetic smile. "So boss, I came in late so I never did hear what we were doing. Or maybe I forgot. Aaaaanyway...what exactly is our job now?" |

Clark was making hasty calculations in his brain, trying to determine the odds of survival that the group faced in the upcoming fight. If Vastian were to win, they would be home free, but if Brannan won the duel, force would be necessary...he had his vials, but his stock of bloodbane was still in the armory...and it didn't help that their numbers were smaller than usual today. Just then, Serena came up to him and smiled. "So boss, I came in late so I never did hear what we were doing. Or maybe I forgot. Aaaaanyway...what exactly is our job now?" Clark felt some of his stress fade away. Serena's bubbly personality was getting contagious. "Vastian has contracted us. He's a bounty hunter from out east, from what I've gathered," Clark replied. "We're his backup, in case he can't bring his man in." He glanced back at Vastian tried to judge his emotions, but Clark couldn't determine a thing. He shrugged. "Regardless, I've paid Melanie to keep an eye out for any extra jobs we could swipe, so if this one doesn't go so well, at least the whole day isn't bungled." If this one doesn't go well. The words echoed in Clark's mind. If this mission doesn't go well, will all of us live to see tonight? ...Will any of us? Clark shuddered slightly, then frowned. What did he care if some of his men died? They were mercenaries, common sellswords who had found no other calling in life than to do society's dirty work. Why did he suddenly feel responsible for their well-being? Edited by Seth, Nov 25 2008, 05:51 AM.

Brannan had dallied a little too long. A passerby, some elderly woman, began to shriek hideously when her eyes fell upon the dismembered corpse of the nobleman. The trembling girl off to the side couldn't have made the situation look any better. He considered murdering the damned hag, but took off towards the opposite end of the alleyway instead. It wouldn't be long before the night watch was on him. Emerging from the alleyway, he nearly ran into two of the town guards on patrol, armored and bearing lances. Their eyes fell to the scarlet wetness on his sword, and he wasn't about to give them the oppurtunity to look back up. His left hand flew to the scabbard across his back, and he brought his second blade down like crashing thunder. The blow cleaved through the first guard's helmet and drove three inches into his skull. He delivered a front kick with his left leg as he withdrew the weapon, forcing the guard's body away. His right blade darted from side to side, making feints at the remaining guard, before it lunged upward at his eyes, piercing the man's left eye. The man let out a shout of pain and stumbled backward, making an awkward thrust with his longer-ranged weapon. Brannan avoided the attack and prepared to step forward, but another lance thrust came at him. The one-eyed guard had become desperate, lashing out with a multitude of thrusts, making it difficult to approach him. Brannan crossed his swords in front of him and stepped into the guard's next attack, catching the shaft on the interecting point of the two blades. He pushed the spear upward, then closed the distance between himself and his foe, striking the man about his midsection with the flat of his blade. Once the man was knocked backward to the ground, Brannan forced both his swords deep into the man's torso. The gasp that escaped him was insurance enough that he wasn't long for this world. Brannan strode away from the body, satisifed with the way he had handled things, until he heard the sound of a horn behind him. The one-eyed guard had life enough in him to turn his dying breath into an alarm, blowing at the horn he had kept away at his belt. Brannan swore aloud, and ran to the North side of town, hoping to find an easier route than the one he had encountered thusfar. Brannan's dream from the night before upset him. He was recollecting the night's events on his own now, much to his disgust. Those moments proved a major setback for one of Brannan's profession: wounded to the point of being unsuitable for combat, having to run from town to town without taking and jobs in-between... But that was over now. There was still an ominous feel to the whole matter of the dream, but Brannan felt rather relaxed. |

On Clark's command, XEQ follows the other mercenaries outside the Guild building. It would much rather follow the commander, but that isn't to be the case. It sees that the angry armored man is conversing with their leader. When the conversation is finished, the group is informed that they are to assist Vastian in hunting down some criminal or other. The tall archer is disappointed. It seems like overkill to have a whole mercenary band go after one man. Then XEQ notices that Clark looks slightly worried and realizes that there must be more to the story. The target must have back-up of his own. |

Serena "Bounty hunting, huh?" Serena clapped her hands in enjoyment. She grinned eagerly, rubbing her hands together in anticipation. "Oh boy, I hope he's strong. No point in taking a bounty if the person can't even fight for their life. I mean, he had to have done something bad if he has a bounty on him. Hopefully this'll be exciting. After that break, I'm itching to get back into action." "Good job, boss, good job. We definitely aren't gonna lose. I mean, we have you on our side! And everyone else! We're like an unstoppable force! Nothin' is gonna stand in our way, right boss? This one is pretty much in the bag. And then we can wipe out the rest of those extra jobs whenever we want." Serena nodded confidently. "I can feel the gold in my fingers right now." She grinned. "Hehe~ Sorry, but I got caught up in the moment." |

Serena's excitement bolstered Clark's confidence. He even felt a tinge of pride when she cited him as a reason for why they would not lose. It's nice knowing someone believes in me. Clark grinned. "The only one here who is unstoppable is you," he said playfully. "You could be cornered by twenty armed men, and you'd simply shake your head and tell them you pitied them for not staying home that day." Knowing her, it wasn't far from the truth. The odd thing is, she probably could fend them off. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recens woke up later than he had planned, but still managed to be up and about before most of the mercenaries had shaken off their slumber. After catching a quick bite to eat for breakfast, Recens headed out into the forest behind the barracks. Selecting a large, firm stone, Recens took a square stance in front of it and, drawing his arm back, lunged forward and punched the stone as hard as he could. Upon impact, his knuckles shattered and pieced of bone tore through his skin. Tears welled up in his eyes, but he made no sound. Almost immediately, however, the damaged area began to heal. Bones slid back into place and flesh mended without so much as a scar to mark the wound. Recens looked his hand over, front and back. Satisfied with the healing, Recens resumed his stance and repeated the process with his other hand, alternating between the two for a good while. Finally, he stopped wincing as his knuckles broke against the rock and reformed, and he no longer felt tears come to his eyes from the pain. Recens smiled; it had been a very long process, and this was the first part of his body he had succeeded at doing it, but the pain had become almost nonexistant to him. Remembering what else he had planned to do, Recens sighed and repositioned himself, preparing to work on his elbows. Edited by Seth, Nov 26 2008, 05:59 AM.

Brannan descended the stairs, heading to what he supposed must've been a sort of kitchen area. He lacked the patience to fix himself something other than the dried meat rations he had stored among his things, but those wouldn't last him much longer. Not that he'd miss them. The taste and consistency was dissappointing, but it was better than nothing at all. He'd eventually learn to put together something worthwhile...there just wasn't much incentive for now. After his meal, he ventured outside, seeking to get a bit of practice in before receiving his next assignment. He had scarcely taken in a breath of the fresh morning air when he heard a thumping from the woods. He scowled, drew his blade, and approached the noise. He wasn't surprised to find Recens engaged in some method of training, though it was certainly a relief. Brannan sheathed his weapon, adjusted it at his side, and drew closer, a smirk growing on his face. "Morning, Recens. I never would have dreamed that you were one of those self-abusers. What exactly are you doing?" ------------------------------- "That's close enough." The night watch had come down upon Brannan, and he now had eight well-trained soldiers prepared to skewer him from all sides with lances. Or rather, they were, until Brannan had taken himself a hostage from among the group. Rather than bolt away from the town, the swordsman had decided it would be a better plan to conserve as much energy as he could. So he lept from his hiding place among the shadows as the guards passed, and seized the straggler from behind. The man felt a slippery edge at his throat and froze. "All of you step back. Drop your weapons." The guards weren't cooperating. Did they consider Brannan's hostage expendable? Or did they assume that Brannan would kill the man regardless of what they did? They were right in that respect, and Brannan smiled at the thought. He heard a step from behind, and this was no time to be taking chances. Brannan slit his hostage's throat quickly and shoved him away, causing the man to stumble and writhe on the ground. The others guards, having lost what little reason they had to hesitate, rushed at the swordsman. Brannan swiftly drew another sword with his left hand, parrying with his right hand's sword. The guards' attacks were well-sychronized, and their numbers gave them a considerable advantage. Brannan could do little more than thrash his arms about, delfecting anything that came too close. He felt a bit of relief when he realized there was little strength backing the lances that were aimed at him...his enemy meant to tire him out rather than fight him outright. Deciding to gamble on the opportunity, Brannan began to approach the guard while parrying their thrusts. When he had adjusted himself to a more comfortable range, he put extra force into his next few blocks, pushing the weapons of his adversaries aside momentarily. His right sword performed a quick backhand slash, robbing one man of his head and another of his will to fight -- the sword that cut through his comrade's neck had splattered him with gore and had dug into his right arm. He staggered backwards a few steps and collapsed against a wall, growing pale as he clutched at his wound. The guards looked at him with loathing, put off by his disgust. What had disturbed their ally filled them with vengeful fury. One man had the gall to insult the defeated watchman. He didn't have time to call him anything other than "a damned coward", as Brannan exploited his brief shift in focus by charging ahead, sweeping his legs out from under him with the flat of his blade, and ramming a sword into his chest. It wasn't fatal, but he certainly wasn't going to be taking any other action that night. Using the momentum from his previous attack, Brannan spun around while slicing upward against a lance shaft, clutting four fingers from a guard's hand to the first knuckle. He completed another rotation, this time striking the shocked guard with a roundhouse kick, knocking him into a second guard. The precious seconds of balance lost proved fatal, as the member of the night watch was left open to multiple stabs from both of Brannan's swords, ranging from the torso to the upper portion of the man's thighs. The man fell backwards, his heart punctured. Suddenly the swordsman heaved to one side. Brannan felt a sharp burst of pain radiating from his left arm and outward, unsure of where it came from aside from its general location. His left hand, sword dropped, hung limp at his side, bones protuding at strange angles along his forearm. He whirled around, enraged, to find a guard armed with a bloodied cudgel. In his arrogance, he had been dealt a costly blow, and now his arm was broken... Striking wildly, he hacked away at the offending guard's armor with his right sword, eventually chipping the man's weapon to bits at the expense of his own weapon's constitution. He put up his hands as if to defend himself in that matter, and his own hands were soon made useless. Brannan felt another pain this time, a piercing in his side. His rage had blinded him just as his hubris did. The guard attempted to withdraw his lance, but Brannan struck at the lance's shaft with his forearm, removing it from the guard's grip while twisting the spear's head inside his body. He shoved the blade into the last guard's throat an let him drop. Brannan was panting now, a bit from fatigue, a bit from the pain. He wiped the sweat away from his forehead with his bloody sleeve, succeeding only in smearing his face with grimy crimson. He sheathed his sword and plucked the lance from his body, letting out a shout of pain as he did so. He looked over the corpse of the man who had broken his arm -- Brannan hadn't thought he had killed him, but sure enough, the man was covered in countless gashes, and the mutilation of his hands made it clear that he couldn't have lasted very long after such an assault. He had bled out, plain and simple. Brannan left his wounds as they were. There would be plenty of time to tend to them after he escaped. |

Recens jumped, surprised by Brannan's sudden appearance. Did he see my arm mend? Recens stumbled for a moment, then managed to utter a nervous response. "Oh, you know, just...um...endurance training." Recens hoped his lie was believable enough. To drive home his point, he smacked his elbow against the rock again, but not hard enough to break anything like he had been doing previously. "Yep. It helps a bit." |

Brannan frowned. "Interesting, eh, idea. Personally, my intention is not to be hit at all, but I suppose something like that could work...maybe you could show me some time, after my arm's fully healed. I could use a bit more durability myself." He didn't really buy into the whole thing, but Recens was acting a little odd, and he didn't want to seem to be acting unusually in return... Wait, perhaps I can get something useful out of this. "By the looks of things, you're causing yourself some considerable damage. You must know a few tricks to a quicker recovery, eh? Anything you know of I could apply to myself, medicinal herbs or the like? I'm getting real tired for my damned left arm to heal naturally..." |

"No, no, nothing of the sort!" Recens replied hastily. He was beginning to sweat under his shirt. "I just naturally heal a little bit quicker, that's all." Putting on a cheery smile, he beat his other elbow into the rock again, yelping as he realized he had hit it harder than he had intended. |

"Ah." It seemed a little strange to Brannan. He reminded himself that Recens had seemed suspicious to him before, but had taken him by surprise by supporting him when he faced Byron. Could be that's just the way he is. I'd be inclined to feel suspicious again if he hadn't gone and earned my respect... He smiled."Well, that's fine. Shouldn't be too much longer before it's all fixed up, but hell, it sure feels like forever. Really got to give it to you, though. Didn't chalk you up as one of those intense-training, hardcore types." |

Recens shrugged and winced as his elbow throbbed. He rubbed it gingerly with his other hand. "I never really was," he replied. "But then, in this business, it pays to stay in peak condition." He paused for a moment, then snickered at the unintended play-on-words he had made. |

Brannan didn't laugh along with him, though any lingering concern he felt before was relieved. Satisified with the responses Recens provided, he attempted to strike up some friendly conversation. "So, are we the only ones up this early? What's keeping the others?" |

"Well, Jane needs her 'beauty sleep,' if you'll believe that..." Recens began. "Lou and Alice are still kids, so they like to sleep in. Byron should be awake soon enough. Ognus..." Recens trailed off and scratched his head. "I don't think I've ever seen him sleep. If he does, it's only for a few hours a night. Must be something he developed when he was a kid." Choosing to continue the discussion while his elbow healed slowly, Recens asked, "So why are you up so early?" |

"Oh, I'm just a morning person. I actually enjoy the dawn, believe it or not. And considering our field of work sometimes calls for odd hours, I like to wake early when I can. Just a habit." It was more of a nostalgic thing for Brannan. It reminded him of simpler times, when he was just a farmer's boy rising with the sun to get all of his chores finished nice and early. Back when there were people to depend on him and he had someone he could trust with anything. |

Clark stopped the group just before the barracks of the Fury came over the crest of the next hill. He turned to them and began to outline their plan of attack. "Alright, guys, as much faith as I have in Vastian, we have to plan ahead for the worst-case-scenario," Clark said. "XEQ, you'll split off from us now and find a spot that provides cover while also allowing a decent view of the area in front of the barracks. Do not attack anyone until I call your name." Clark rounded about to face Weyler. "Since Evelyn seems to have slept in, you're currently our main magic specialist. If fighting breaks out, look for Jane and engage her immediately. Keep her away from everyone else as best as you can." Clark clapped him on the shoulder for encouragement. "Myke, you'll guard Weyler from being attacked. If either of your friends can use magic, they're welcome to help Weyler; otherwise, I'd recommend having them hang back." As Clark looked about the group, he realized that the fighters that he had reserved to work with him were all women. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth; it probably seemed like he was trying to show off for the women. In reality, that's just how things had worked out; since Derran left, most of the mercenaries that joined had been women. "You three," he said, pointing to Serena, Valentia, and Brianna. "We'll rush to Vastian's aid, defend him, and strike back at the Fury. Don't underestimate Byron; he swings wide, but he's damn quick. You'll have no problem picking him out of the group. Keep an eye out for Recens, and also Ognus. He'll be the little angry bald man running around waving knives." Clark counted on his fingers, feeling as though he'd forgotten someone. His face lit up as he realized the missing Fury member. "Oh, and there's also Lou...he's a bit of a bumbler, but he uses magic, so be careful." Clark eyed Vastian with a look of hopefulness and wariness. We're counting on you, Vastian, he thought. Don't make us resort to Plan B. |

XEQ nods upon receiving its orders. It walks down the side of the hill, away from the commander. It spies what appears to be a recently uprooted tree. It decides that this meets the general description of cover and heads in that direction. Reaching this large wooden barricade the tall cloaked being checks to see where the enemy lies and is successful in locating a building a bit further around the hill. It reaches behind its back and takes an arrow. The archer will be ready when Clark calls. |

Serena and Valentia "All right, boss! You can count on me!" Serena said with full confidence as she began stretching, going through her small ritual before the battle began. It wasn't a particularly complex ritual, since it consisted of a few simple stretches and mentally building herself up. She kept all of Clark's advice in her mind. The last thing she wanted was to die here. Well, die anywhere, really. Besides, she was having too much fun with this group. She had just planned on sticking around for a little while and then moving on, but there was something that just kept her here. But it wasn't a problem. She'd cut through anything that got in her way. Valentia gave Clark a silent nod and closed her eyes, reciting a small mantra to herself that she had made during her search for her father. She couldn't...wouldn't let herself die here. She had to find her father. Only then would she allow herself the possibility of dying. So she just took in a deep breath and cracked her knuckles. It was almost time to get to work. |

Weyler nodded, expressing his understanding of the situation. "I'll do my best." While it was true he'd gotten a good deal of practice in as of late, he wasn't sure where he stood in terms of skill and capability. He had no one to compare himself to, until now. The thought of a chance to test his abilities excited him, filling him with an eagerness that eclipsed his fear of failing. In fact, the possibilty of failure hadn't occured to him...the other missions had ended well, why should this one be any different? ----- Vastian met Clark's gaze, sensed what it conveyed. Clark and his mercenaries were counting on him to finish the job quickly so Brannan's allies wouldn't get involved. This didn't bother Vastian at all. They're being paid. If anything, they should be grateful that they might not have to do a damn thing for their money. He looked away and cleared his throat. "Tell me when you're done planning. Give the word and I'll call Brannan out." Edited by goatfish, Dec 9 2008, 08:44 PM.

Clark heard Vastian and nodded. He checked his gear to make sure that he had easy access to the serrated knife in case of an emergency, then removed half a dozen of the magical vials from the pouch, folded his sleeves back slightly so they were almost up to his shoulders, and tucked three vials into each side's fold. After making sure that everyone else was prepared for the possible confrontation, Clark gave Vastian a thumbs-up. "Showtime, Vastian." |

Vastian gave a nod, then turned and marched toward the barracks. He approached the door, pounded on it with an armored fist. "Brannan! Let's stop this damned game! How about you come out here and face me like a man, and we can put an end to all this?! You can't run forever! I'll follow you across the damned continent and back, so why don't you just accept your fate and face me!" He hadn't meant to shout so much, but the words felt pulled from him. It was going to be difficult to remain professional on this mission. His hand reached for the handle of his axe, gripped it tightly. He took a few steps back from the door and waited. |

From within the barracks, shouting could be heard. "Lou, get the damn door!" Clearly, Jane was not happy to have been awakened by the loud beating on the door. For a moment, silence prevailed, then a small explosion breached the still air, and a man could be heard yelping in pain. A few seconds later, the door to the barracks was opened, and out stepped a blonde youth still in his pajamas, massaging his leg, which looked slightly scorched. "Hmm? What can I do for you?" he asked groggily, looking at Vastian. |

Vastian glared at the young man and shifted his weapon arm about with impatience. "Do you think I'm stupid? I know you're hiding him out here. I've got no trouble with your lot, but you've taken a foul excuse for a human being under your wing, and I'm here to remove him." He paused, thinking his words over for a moment. They did sound rather aggresive, and the plan was to engage Brannan alone. He spoke again, elaborating on his intentions. "I'm challenging him to single combat. He ought to have enough pride in himself to honor a request for a duel. Tell him that." Edited by goatfish, Dec 14 2008, 11:33 PM.

Lou blinked, then jolted awake at the sight of Vastian's axe. "H-H-HOLY CRAP!!!" He jumped back into the barracks. "C-C-Commander! There's someone here to see you!" When no reply came, Lou turned white. "J-just a moment," he stammered. Lou ran into the building as though he thought Vastian would chase after him. After a few minutes, Byron thundered out of the front door, axe in hand, Lou trailing behind him, and said, "Alright, now what's this about some bloke challenging me one-on-one?" His eyes fell on Vastian, and he frowned. "You sure about this, bub? I'm a wee bit on the large side, if you haven't noticed." OOC: Yes, I know you want to fight Brannan, but the idea is that everyone was asleep when you yelled that. :D ----------------------------------------------------------------- Recens whipped around when loud noises echoed through the previously tranquil woods. The sound was coming from the direction of the barracks. "Sounds like Jane woke up," Recens joked to Brannan. Nonetheless, his hands checked the positions of his daggers as he walked back to the edge of the forest. |

OOC: hehe, gotcha. Poor Vastian D: Vastian was startled by the warrior's appearance. He kept himself composed, save for a quick twitch of the corner of his mouth. Marvelous. Looks like things couldn't go much worse from here... "...That you are. But I'm not here to fight with you. I'm looking for Brannan." It was difficult to maintain the anger in his voice and appearance while attempting to talk his way out of the mess he'd landed himself in. "About six feet tall? Red hair, green eyes? I know he's come drifting into town not too long ago, and I've got reason to believe he's holding up with you." ----- "Heh. And here I thought you were just giving her a hard time." He smirked and looked back towards the barracks. "Sure sounds like a rude awakening." Recens, apparently finished with his morning training, left for the forest's edge. Brannan remained where he was and considered doing some more practicing. He wasn't sure if Recens expected him to follow, but he hadn't said anything. With a shrug, Brannan drew his sword and began fencing an imaginary foe to pass the time. |

"Ah, good, I'm not in much of a mood for a brawl, personally," he said. "Haven't had my breakfast yet. I'll go get him right quick." Byron walked up the stairs to Brannan's room, passing a very disgruntled Jane along the way. As he went, Byron considered the situation. It's probably the bounty hunter Brannan mentioned, he thought. Ah, well, nothing to do but see how it plays out! He banged on the door twice, and shouted, "Oi! Brannan! Some punk in armor's come looking to fight you!" When no response came, Byron opened the door and found that Brannan was not there. Scratching his head, he left the upper floor and stopped in the kitchen to snag a couple of rolls before heading back outside. He stuffed it into his mouth and chewed, then spoke after he'd finished his mouthful. "Sorry, bub, but I can't find him." He shrugged and began munching on the other roll and let his eyes drift around the area. The angry armored man had brought friends, and among them, he recognized Clark Kallen. Byron nearly choked on his roll. He glared at Clark, still angry over the most recent business venture that Clark had cost him. Meanwhile, Recens had reached the forest's edge and was debating whether or not to re-enter the building through his window or the front door when he realized that it didn't matter either way; people were already gathered near the building. The commander was standing on the doorstep eating a roll, so he walked up to him to learn about the current situation. "Morning, Byron," Recens said. "Pardon my bluntness, but, uh, what the hell is going on?" |

OOC: Running commentary? *legasp* Marvellous, looks like an easy job being hurled out of a window by pure chance. Mind you, I suppose it could be worse, the Order could have traced Emysia's spell already. Best think quickly- I've got to keep Weyler, Emysia and Lilane safe while they deal with that she-demon. The one at the door looks like their boss, and I don't like the way he's looking at ours. Hopefully, though, that means he won't come charging at me while I'm trying to cover three backs instead of one. I really wish I'd seen more of all involved at work, so I could make a proper judgment, but I know Emysia got accepted into the Order because she was so good at magic. Lilane's had a good teacher if nothing else, but could she take life if need be? What's this? Myke is actually thinking? Two years of being alone in a foreign world were bound to have changed him, but this is... I just hope he's gotten better with that sword over these last two years, because between this and the Order, he'll certainly need to be as good as that Serena was saying. |

OOC: Well, since finals and such are almost over (which means that other people will hopefully start RPing), I'm going to continue moving this along. "Hello, Recens," Byron replied, nodding curtly to his comrade. "This fellow here," he jerked his head in Vastian's direction, "says he's got a bone to pick with our mutual friend Brannan. Have you seen him around?" "Nope, sure haven't!" Recens lied. Suddenly, as if remembering something, he clutched at his side. "Dammit! I left one of my knives in the woods!" He turned back and jogged into the woods, breaking into a sprint when he knew no one could see him. He hoped that his lie had been convincing. Soon, he found the place where he had left Brannan. After catching his breath, he walked over to him and said, "Looks like your friend the bounty hunter has caught up with you." Edited by Seth, Dec 16 2008, 08:01 PM.

OOC: sorry it's kinda long : / "He has?" Brannan had expected to be more frantic upon hearing such news. Oddly enough, the very thing he had been dreading hadn't disturbed him very much. He lowered his weapon, but did not sheath it. "I'd hate to leave him waiting." He walked past Recens and headed towards the barracks, still possessed by an eerie state of calm. As he drew closer, he saw what must've been the man after his life: a pale, blonde-haired man clad in orange armor. He was a large man, and a cold glare was set on his face. Brannan gave a nod in greeting to Byron as he passed, and stopped a few feet away from Vastian, sword out. The bounty hunter focused on his sword hand and drew the grip on his axe handle tighter. "Well, seems you've finally caught up with me. Congratulations. Do you expect to succeed?" The armored man scowled, then turned his face to the side and spit on the ground. "Of course." "You're not the first to try, you know. And I doubt you'll be the last. Your employer is a wealthy man, and he'll throw pawns like you at me as long as he can afford to." Vastian's eyes widened. "...What would give you reason to believe I've been hired by a party outside of the city?" "They wouldn't still be following me after so long. The city couldn't send me from among their own police force, as that could leave them vulnerable. They couldn't be sure how long it'd take to finally catch me, and being a border town, it wouldn't be wise to send all their armed men so far away, now would it?" Vastian let out a single, harsh laugh. "Well, you're correct. I've been hired by House Persantius. They're out for blood...looks like your cunning failed you there. Killing a noble heir to cover up a rape..." Brannan looked taken aback by this. "Excuse me?" "Would you deny your crimes now, after running this far?! You took that poor young woman against her will, killed a nobleman, and slaughtered several guards from the night watch! You possess honor enough to face me now, but not to confess yourself?!" Brannan's smirk returned, the odd, twisted little smile that was so difficult to read. "You know...you haven't given much thought to this, have you?" Vastian nearly roared his next words. "What in hell are you talking about?!" "Well, being present at the night of this little 'incident', let me tell you, I heard that girl let out a few good screams-" "Oh, you sick son of a -" "No interruptions, please. As I was saying...the girl was screaming for help until her cries were muffled, and nothing happened. Absolutely nothing, besides that wicked act you accuse me of. Funny how the guards were all about the moment I emerged from the alleyway. Let that settle for a bit." Vastian stared at him blankly for a time. Then his jaw fell open. He snapped it shut again as his eyes narrowed with rage. "Need more of an explanation? Here you go, then. I happened to walk in on your nobleman friend and the girl, and she didn't look to happy with the way things were going. I killed the bastard and every guard who got in my way as I made a run for it, every murder justified. How's that?" "You dare accuse the Persantius heir of-" "Makes sense, doesn't it? All the guards failing to investigate the screaming, yet they're all so close to the alleyway where it occured? What're they to care, just some rich boy sowing his wild oats, right? Wouldn't be surprised if he paid the lot of them off, though with his reputation, he could've done it for free." Vastian stood rigid for a moment, speechless, face contorted with rage. he lowered himself into a fighting stance before he spoke again. "I'll have you know I was once a ward of House Persantius." "Oh, then you should know them better than anyone. Cheap bastards with an eye for the pretty young girls, eh?" That last comment hit home. Nothing riled up Vastian more than his history with the noble house that had abandoned him. A mere instant after the sentence was uttered, he rushed at his foe, bounding forward with his axe raised high, both hands around the handle. "LOOKS LIKE I'LL BE DRAGGING A CORPSE ACROSS ETRURIA!" Vastian's shout gave way to a battlecry as he brought the axe down. |

Serena The young swordswoman waited patiently as Vastian went to do his business of calling out his mark and fighting him or something. To be honest, she wasn't all that worried about the whole fight itself. Sure, they were probably tough and all but after their recent string of victories, it didn't seem like there was a battle they couldn't win. So while Vastian talked to...whoever answered the door, she decided to amuse herself by teaching herself to juggle. Picking up a couple of loose stones, she futilely tried to juggle them to pass the time. She wasn't all that successful, but it did keep her occupied long enough for Vastian's shout to break her concentration and send all the stones thumping back to the ground. She immediately put a hand to her sword, ready to draw it at a moment's notice. 'Almost had it.' |

XEQ watches the goings-on but can't quite hear the discussion until Vastian goes after the target with his axe, screaming bloody murder. Quite literally. The bounty hunter is supposed to kill this man, the archer knows that. It had not expected such a vicious, loud attack. It will never understand the behavior of these people. Eager to launch this arrow in its bow, the tall being looks through the budding trees and sees its commander. Clark gives no signal yet, so XEQ waits. |

Recens returned from the woods to see that Brannan was about to fight his pursuer. Instinctively, Recens reached for his bow, only to realize that it was not there; he'd left it in his room. Meanwhile, Byron called to Clark from the doorstep, "Leave this between these two fellows, Kallen!" He raised his axe menacingly. "I'll rip you a new asshole if you interfere!" Clark grinned smugly; he seriously doubted that Byron would be able to do that. Nonetheless, he focused on the the duel intently, waiting for the right moment if he needed to get involved. |

Brannan burst forward while bringing the left side of his body back, drawing closer to Vastian while removing himself from the arc of the axe. His right arm was raised to point the tip of his blade at his opponent's throat. The accuracy and strength of such a thrust were lacking, driven by the sudden movement of the lower body, but the element of surprise made up for it. The tip of Brannan's sword struck the bounty hunter on the breast plate, a few inches above the heart. Vastian stumbled backwards a step, unsure if it was the force of the stab or merely its startling effect. "You'd do well not to underestimate me. I've dealt with your like before," Brannan taunted, steppping back. "You don't have the speed to keep up with me." Vastian didn't reply. The cold glare was set on his face again. "All spent on your first try, eh? Pity." Vastian ran at him again, holding the axe with one hand this time, his elbow pointing out while the blade rested on his shoulder. Brannan expected another slow but devasting swing, set up a defense for it, and was promptly struck in the face by Vastian's fist. The swordsman recoiled quickly, jumping back, his left hand steadying his head. He hadn't expected such a swift motion from the armored man, and he'd grown arrogant after infuriating his foe. But Vastian had ceased to let the emotion play on his face, and Brannan was suddenly less conifident he'd be so predictable. Another jab. There was little Brannan could do aside from dodge, with his opponent clad in plate mail. Brannan searched for the classic vulnerabilities at the joints and neck of the armor, found the former a possibillity while the neck was reinforced. Strangely enough, Vastian wore no helmet...if he had to make a guess, Brannan would assume it was because Vastian relied on his sudden, quick movements to defend as well as attack and preferred the freedom of motion and peripheral vision that a bare head granted him. "Ah, so you are different. You possess a degree of...cunning, I see." Brannan rubbed the left side of his face, grinned. "Unfortunately, I'm just about done enjoying all these little surprises." Still no reply. Vastian was focused enitirely on the fight and masking his emotions. Brannan approached his foe this time, not as quickly as Vastian had charged but certainly with more caution. He waited for the punch to come, dodged to the right, and took his opponent's dead side. He thrust at a point where two plates met on his opponent's armor, just below the rib cage. His arm wasn't jarred too terribly in the attempt, and that was assurance enough he had landed an effective hit. Vastian grunted in pain, threw his left arm back to grab at the axe handle, and swung down at a diagonal. He pivoted at the waist as he did so, pulling Brannan and his weapon to the right and into the range of the powerful swing. Brannan submitted to the force pulling him to the side and moved with it, tumbling to the side as the axe tore at the space he occupied mere moments ago. He's a challenge, I'll give him that much. I'm still a bit dizzy from that jab... Brannan righted himself hastily and assumed a fighting stance, waiting for Vastian to make the next move. |

After Vastian landed a punch on Brannan, Byron motioned for Lou to come to his side. Clark noted the action with suspicion, preparing to hurl his vials and draw his blade, but a few moments later, Lou left. He could not determine what Byron had done, but he doubted it would help Vastian, whatever it was. Lou ran into the barracks and hurtled past the main room into the kitchen, where Alice was making eggs. He caught his breath for a moment, catching Alice's attention with his entrance. "Go upstairs and heal the tall redhead." He stood straight up again, having regained his normal breathing. "Make sure you can see him, but that no one can see you. Try not to make it obvious that you're healing him, either." Alice beamed at Lou, then scooped her eggs onto a plate. She proceeded to her room, where she retrieved a physic staff and headed to the loft, where she would be able to have a clear view of the front from the right angle. Alice slowly opened a small window and peered out. She could see a decent distance from the barracks, and noted that a tree had fallen over, or rather wrenched from the ground, as its roots had been lifted from the ground as well. Probably just Menace again. Glancing to the side, she caught sight of Brannan's red hair. Focusing on that point, she let a small pulse of healing flow to him from her staff. |

Brannan felt a strange warmth come over him. If he hadn't cleared his head of unnecessary thoughts to focus on himself and the battle, he probably wouldn't have noticed it. At first he merely furrowed his brow, attempted to shake the feeling off, but he lacked the time to further investigate the sensation, as Vastian had broke into a run towards him. The armored man attempted the left punch again, this one with more force than before. The fist came hurtling towards Brannan's skull, and the swordsman repeated his previous counter, hoping to catch Vastian off-guard with a slight variation. He feinted the thrust at the opening in the plate mail and waited for Vastian to perform his quick turning slash. Sure enough, Vastian repeated the tactic, heaving all his momentum forward into the blow. Brannan delivered a roundhouse kick with his left leg to the back of the bounty hunter's turned body. Vastian was unprepared for the extra push forward, and drew his right leg up sharply, an instinctual move to stomp down and ground himself. Brannan recovered from the roundhouse and aimed a front kick at Vastian's raised boot. It was enough to set the bounty hunter completely off balance, and Vastian fell to the ground face first. He rolled to the side onto his back to right himself and felt the cold sting of sharp metal pressed against his forehead. He only became afraid when he realized his weapon was just out of reach. "You're fine where you are. Lie there." Brannan stood a few steps away from Vastian's head and with the bounty hunter's legs furthest from him, as far out of reach of any surprise attacks as he could get, however improbable they were at this point. "I wouldn't think anything of running this sword right through your head." He looked to Byron and grinned. "Speaking of which, is that alright with you? I'm hoping to send a message for this man's successors." Edited by goatfish, Dec 24 2008, 05:49 AM.

Byron was at a loss. Brannan had clearly bested his opponent and, given the circumstances of their fight, had every right to rearrange the contents of Vastian's head with his sword. On the other hand, Byron took pity on the axeman; he had been misled in his cause, and Brannan was a stellar swordsman. Even if Alice hadn't healed him, the towering redhead would have won the bout. "Well, Brannan, I suppose that's up t--" Unfortunately for him, Clark did not grant Byron the opportunity to judge Vastian's fate. Cursing his luck, Clark shouted, "XEQ, NOW!!" Not waiting for the archer's acknowledgement, Clark whipped the four vials in his left sleeve at the front of the barracks. Byron's eyes widened, for he knew exactly what they were. "Weapons!" Byron cried, throwing himself out of the path of the magical explosives. "Everyone to arms!" Clark responded in turn. "Stick to the plan! We'll recover Vastian and get the hell out of here!" He drew his sword and felt the rush of fear and excitement wash over him. Lou stumbled out the door, nearly tripping off the porch as he lugged Byron's axe along. After the commander had relieved him of his load, Lou pulled a tome out of his pajamas. Ognus came running, knives in hand and ready to fight, but there was no sign of Jane. Meanwhile, Recens backed away from the spectacle slowly, edging around behind the barracks. OOC: So, yeah, this isn't what I originally planned, but after thinking it through, I think this would be a good time for Chapter 3. Lewa and Goatfish need to post at least once more before the event will start, though; once the conflict has been taken care of, we'll get going. Right now, I have the following characters slated to be involved in the battle: Allies Clark Weyler Vastian Serena Valentia Myke Emysia Lilane Brianna XEQ Enemies Byron Ognus Lou Brannan Alice If you'd like your character to be involved, please let me know now. Also, specify when you want them to join (beginning, turn 2, etc.), then make sure you RP their entrance in the event topic that I'll make once this gets going. Edited by Seth, Dec 24 2008, 10:13 PM.

XEQ watches the battle intently. It sees the swordsman start to weaken, then turn the battle around, soundly defeating Vastian. The archer aims at the red-haired man, and listens for the order. "XEQ, NOW!!" shouts the commander. Following Clark's order, the silent entity lets loose an arrow at the victor. XEQ then abandons the cover, climbing over the fallen tree to get closer to the battle. It does not fear death, desiring only that it have a chance to kill. |

"XEQ, NOW!!" Brannan heard shouting in the distance. An instant later something came whistling through the air towards him, struck him in the left shoulder where his arm met his body, a few inches away from his heart. He gasped in surprise and pain, then jumped away from Vastian to check the area with his right hand. It was far from a shallow wound, but the arrow head hadn't punctured through to the other side. Whoever was backing Vastian up sure wasn't playing around. Brannan retreated further back towards the barracks and his own allies, the former damaged by the strange exploding vials. "Looks like I'll be needing your help after all, Byron." He grimaced as he pulled the arrow from his body. "Let's make quick work of these bastards, eh?" |
