OOC: Wow...um, in all honesty, I'm very impressed that we've held up this long, and I really look forward to continuing to RP with you all. In a couple of weeks, this clan will have been running for a full year. :D Anyway, back to the plot. BIC: Testing his strength, Clark pushed himself up off of the cot and attempted to walk around. He stumbled at first, but regained his footing and walked slowly, limping slightly from the armor digging into his skin. Not wanting to advance the damage, he resumed sitting on the cot as he awaited the healer's arrival. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The proceedings consisted mostly of the dull chattering that was typical of the council meetings, but at the end, Lord Ruve began to build his case against the newfound heir to the throne of Sydelle. The position of duke had been vacated for over a year, and the true heir had gone missing over a decade ago. To those who read between the lines of the noble's speech, it was clear that his intent was to gain control over the region, which would put him in a position of power over a good deal of the council by comparison. However, several of the nobles did not much mind this result, so the issue was allowed to pass into further consideration at a later date. "Interesting turn of events, eh, Carin?" asked Lord Calat after the meeting had adjourned. "All these ambitious new dukes and counts and earls..." He let out a sigh. "Sometime I feel like we're the only sane ones." "Indeed it does, Salem," she replied. "I'm sorry, but I must cancel our usual appointment to tea with lunch." Lord Calat was surprised. "It must be quite important. I've never known you to miss an occasion for tea!" "I've an appointment to keep," Lady Gast replied with a wink. All the better to prepare for Ruve's ambitions. OOC: I don't really have much to add relative to the plot involving the mercenaries, so this is just a bit of prep work. |

ROWAN Rowan had finally arrived back at town. It took longer than he anticipated, but he usually wasn't on foot when he was out of town, so he guessed that was to be expected. Still, he was glad to finally be able to get rid of the thief he was dragging along (Well, he could have just tied him to a tree and left him there, but then he wouldn't get any reward for it). Regardless, he arrived at the guard's station with his prisoner still in tow and opened the entrance, glanced inside and when he didn't find anyone, he called out to the guards there, "Hey! I got a new arrival here!" He pulled the man inside and closed the door after. A short man with short black hair wearing a standard guard uniform of plate armor and a plain shirt and pants combo called back as he was walking into the room, "I hear ya, I hear ya!" The man examined Rowan and his prisoner, "So what'd he do?" Rowan casually replied, "He was caught stealing and also attempted to kill someone as I was arresting him." The short man nodded in reply and called out over where he previously entered the room, "'Ey! Maurice! I got someone for ya!" Another, much taller and stronger looking man came through the same entryway with his arms crossed. He examined the three men in the room and simply grunted. The short man, obviously frustrated by Maurice's lack of action, spoke out, "Well don't just stand there!" Another grunt and the man approached Rowan and held out his hand. Rowan quickly handed him the rope attaching his prisoner and watched Maurice drag him to the entryway the two other men previously entered into, seemingly grumbling as he did so. The short man closed the door behind them after they passed through, "Now then, anything else?" Rowan nodded his head, "I have the weapons he had with him outside. I'll take them in here and leave them with you." Rowan turned and headed back outside and quickly took the weapons he strapped onto his horse and dragged them back in and dropped them on the ground beside the door. The short man left the room and returned after Rowan did and tosses a small bag to Rowan which he quickly caught and examined its contents, "This is it?" The short man replied, "Aye, ya didn't exactly catch a big fish out there. 400 gold is plenty for that runt." Rowan simply shook his head in disbelief, but didn't try to press the issue any further, "Very well, goodbye." With that Rowan left out the door and decided to head back to the Inn. XEQ follows the others back into the town. It looks around carefully but does not see the angry young woman with the mallet anywhere. She may have given up, but this is unlikely. Now that it has arrows, the archer would like to shoot her. It is sure that she will find it as long as it remains outside, so that is what it will do. |

The man called Maurice pushed Lug roughly into a small cell, then slid the door closed behind him. Lug stumbled and fell to his knees, which caused Maurice to laugh. Angry and mad at himself, Lug stood up and examined his quarters. A hard wooden bed was attached to the wall; it had no linen or straw for comfort, but there was a small pillow at the head of the bed. In the corner there was a pit which Lug determined, based on the foul smell emanating from it, must be the latrine. A section of the steel bars had been cut away close to the floor in a small rectangle to allow for food to be slid into the cell. First things first, thought Lug. He waited for Maurice to return to the front room, then quickly moved to the edge of his bed and slowly began to rub his bonds against the corner of the cot. It was a terribly lengthy process, but Lug knew it was his only chance to be free of the rope. |

Serena Serena trudged back to the base, more than a little confused by Myke's story but willing to accept it at face value. The whole other world thing wasn't that unbelievable and now she even wanted to go visit one. Preferably not one that would kill her the moment she stepped foot in it, but maybe there was a hot springs world somewhere out there. That would have been awesome. Opening the guild hall doors, she found her customary seat and plopped down on it with a tired sigh. Another job done. |

Myke returned to the guild happier than he had left, since he'd dealt with the Order without getting anyone badly hurt. Best of all, no-one seemed to have any huge problems with the whole 'by the way, we're from another world and we kinda offended their dictatorship, there may be blood' thing. XEQ roamed around outside without entering the guild again- Myke didn't question it, and advised Tookie to do the same. What slightly concerned him, though, was that Clark had recovered somewhat while he'd commandeered the mercenaries for his little expedition. While Clark recovering was good from the group standpoint, it wasn't so good from the 'damn, how the hell do I explain this?' standpoint- worse, Clark had no reason to believe anything about Myke's past. Well, now I just have to hope he's in a good mood. |

Clark turned his head to see that Serena, Myke, and a newcomer had returned. "Ah, you're back," he said dully. A moment later, a squat man with clumps missing from his shaggy gray hair walked in. He was dressed in a simple robe and was wearing thick gloves. Clark motioned for him to come over, and the man knelt beside him and began attending to his wounds, starting by pouring a vulnerary on the area around the first piece of armor he would be removing. Wincing, Clark returned his attention to Myke. "Do you mind telling me where you've been?" |

OOC: Oh boy. :D "Good luck," Tookie muttered under his breath, "I don't think he's too happy with you." "Tookie?," Myke asked, "not now. State the obvious and mock me for being an idiot when I'm done and when Clark's said his piece. And now," he said, turning back to Clark, "as for the question of where I've- rather, we've been, we went to a small fort a few miles east of here, and we've been dealing with security. Specifically, mine." Time for as much of the story as was needed. "Last night, after we'd all gotten back from Byron's, a man I'd hoped I'd never see again saw me about ten footsteps away from here. He decided to start a fight that he couldn't quite finish. Then, one of his allies- whom I also wasn't looking forward to seeing again- stepped in to stop the fight, only to offer me an invitation to deal with them properly. I would have asked you first, and I would have waited, if I didn't know them well enough to at least highly suspect them mobilising a small army and coming here. As far as I was concerned, with you in the condition you were in last night, keeping them away from here was my top priority." "Believe me, Clark, if I saw a realistic way of dealing with my problems without dragging everyone else into them, I would. I knew I had to get them out of the way as soon as possible- preferably before they dragged a sizeable force here- but I also knew that I couldn't deal with them on my own, considering all I'd managed to do for the two years between the last time I saw them and the day I ended up here was keep running around Etruria like a headless chicken." And that was all he managed to say before Emysia and Lilane walked in. OOC: Number of people amused: 0. |

Clark looked at Myke skeptically. While it was possibly true, since Clark had an army after him himself, he was curious as to where this second set of warriors was coming from. "Where did you say these men were from?" As an afterthought, he added, "Oh, and why are they after you? That might be good to know for later." Myke was a good mercenary, but Clark needed to seriously consider whether he was worth the trouble of keeping around based on the situation. |

"... Alright, it's time I told you everything, whether you're likely to believe me or not. Everyone who came with me today knows this now, but I'm not from this world. Neither are Emysia and Lilane," at which point he pointed them out to Clark, since he didn't recall introducing them to him. "We're all from another world, which was called Langras when I left two years ago, but since it's under new and rather limited management now someone's probably had the bright idea of renaming it, but I wouldn't know about that. As for why they're after me, I comitted the grave sin of not dying the first time I met them. They seemed to take it rather personally. Why they insisted on killing most of Langras' people, I don't actually know, considering they probably don't have many people left now." "This whole mess started about two years ago, when the Graael Order- that's the people that were so offended by me not dying- got the idea that Lilane would be dangerous to them and the roughly two hundred people left on Langras and decided to take a group of soldiers to our village. Fortunately for us, Emysia had smuggled Lilane out of the village a few days earlier, wisely not telling us where she was going. Vassarin- he's the guy who paid us a visit last night, he won't be doing that anytime soon with the way I left his arm today- got ever so slightly annoyed and gave the order for his soldiers to kill everyone. Which they did quite well, until they found me. Funny thing is, my parents had had the great idea of doing everything they could to prepare me for a future working with the Order so that they wouldn't end up on the wrong side of a sword. That didn't work out for them or the Order, since I was in a position to take a few of them down with me. More than a few, as it turned out. Eventually, I was subdued by Vassarin, who thought I might possibly have some information that he could use. I didn't, but he didn't know that when he dragged me from my village to the Order's nearest base. I managed to escape from Vassarin and grab a couple of swords for myself, partly due to fortunate circumstances beyond my control, but mostly because most of the Order were a bunch of idiots." "This one base of theirs, however, had one thing I'd never counted on or even thought of- a gateway between Langras and Elibe- incidentally, the gateway in Elibe is in the fort we went to today. I spent the two years after that running around Etruria doing odd-jobs and keeping my head down, and then I ended up here." At this point, Emysia stepped in. She had a rough idea of what Clark had been thinking; Is Myke worth keeping around with this? To be fair, to someone who didn't know the situation very well (as Clark wouldn't have done), it would've been an easy decision to just boot Myke now and see what happened, but Emysia knew more about the Order than she would freely admit. "Clark," she began, "I can tell you one thing now; the Order are not a problem worth losing Myke over. Vassarin may show his face alone or with a small group of people, but he won't be able to do anything for at least three weeks- even magical healing in Langras is very slow, and he definitely won't still be in Elibe after today. Even when he recovers, I very much doubt the Order will trust him with more than a few soldiers after the amount of times he's failed to deal with Myke, and the amount of soldiers they have left to throw away is very small- Myke wasn't joking about how few people there are left in Langras. The only way I can see the Order ever really being a danger to anyone here is if we go to Langras ourselves, which I don't think even Myke is considering." --- Tookie just watched. He didn't really know what to say here. Hell, he still didn't really know what was going on. Just hope I don't get kicked out. OOC: >_> |

Clark listened intently to Myke's story as the healer addressed his wounds. At the end of his lengthy speech, Clark wasn't convinced that what he'd been told was the truth. "Y'know, Myke," he said, "if you didn't wa--SONUVAB*TCH!!" Clark's outburst was caused by the removal of his left shoulder plate. The armor had cut deep enough into the skin to cause bleeding, and if not for the vulnerary applied earlier, Clark would have gone into shock. The healer fumbled for another vulnerary and applied it rather hastily, his hands shaking. Must not be used to this much blood, thought Clark. "Anyway," he said, turning his focus back to Myke, "if you didn't want to tell me what happened, you just had to say so. I've got to applaud your creativity, though." Noticing that the healer was dressing his right shoulder plate and preparing to remove it, Clark pulled out his leather water flask and bit down on it, doing his best to not let any noise escape him as the armor was ripped from his skin. OOC: I don't want to even think about having that actually happen. *shudder* Edited by Seth, May 28 2009, 02:19 AM.

Weyler entered the room in time to hear the Commander curse in pain. His eyes sought the source of the noise and fell on Clark, conscious and fully functioning but in a sorry state. The strength of the electric blast that had damaged him so had actually melded the man's armor to his skin...Weyler had to look away for a moment to collect himself. The sight of the injury didn't disturb him as much as seeing Clark afflicted by it. He felt resposible: it had been his job to find and attack the enemy sage, after all, and Clark was paying for his failure. Weyler cleared his throat. "Creative or not, the 'Order' Myke spoke of is real enough. I accompanied him with Serena and a few others, and we all saw the soldiers they'd brought. Nothing spectacular from what I've seen, except that sage and the brute Myke dealt with personally, but - here's where the creative part comes in - if everything Myke says is true, there's a much larger force than what we dealt with out there. And I'm leaning towards believing that, at this point." If this enemy is willing to chase Myke from world to world, it's inevitable they'll come back in greater numbers... |

"Alright," Tookie said, "I suppose this is the part where I'm expected to pitch in what I know. As Weyler said, we've all seen soldiers from the Order, so I'm prepared to accept that one. Other than those two guys he mentioned, the soldiers they had were pretty useless unless you like fleshy barriers, in which case they were slightly more useful. I'm also prepared to accept that this gateway exists, considering Myke made a point of pointing it out to us. It exists, and by extension Langras does. The only thing I'm not sure on is what Langras entails as a threat. Myke could have dragged us all there today to prove his point, but he didn't, so I'm assuming that going is a bad idea unless you're being paid very well." "Tookie," Myke said, not sure where to go from here, "that's enough. From the start, I knew the whole thing was pretty unbelievable. All I had to go on was my word. And Clark is right, maybe I shouldn't have said anything. But the thing is, I've been keeping my secrets for two years worrying about the Order, and I got fed up of having to keep everything to myself. So I've told all of you everything there is to know, whether you've believed me or not. And to be fair, more of you seem to have accepted it as a possibility than I thought you would." --- Vassarin was not happy. First the was the matter of his arm- which would take weeks to heal, and then there was the matter of Alkaan. The fact that the master of the Order himself was waiting at the gateway from Elibe was not a good sign. "Tell me, Vassarin," he started, "why is it that I find you and Relus here so soon, and why does your left arm appear so mangled?" Vassarin cursed under his breath. Was nothing safe? "Well, you see," Vassarin said, not really knowing what to say, "we're here because we misjudged the threat Elibe poses to us. My left arm is mangled because I recently had a certain sixteen year old boy who knows far too much about us using my axe as a footstool to launch himself at it." "Myke showed himself with a group of locals," Relus added. "Myke? That little child who has escaped Vassarin twice now?" Vassarin could only look at the floor. Alkaan continued, "That child who has already made a mockery of the Order? That child, who happens to be the heir to Sonorius?" "Sonorius?," Relus asked, "that sword forged to fight demons? Myke is it's master?" "Our Gods have told me many things, Relus," Alkaan explained, "including the people that will one day overthrow us all. Mark my words, we must prepare for an invasion. If Myke has already found people to fight against us with him, we can only assume more will come. And then, Vassarin, you will be able to try and best Myke one more time. No sooner. Incidentally, Vassarin, do you see these bags behind me?" Vassarin nodded. "Good. These are your pay for the next six months. Or rather, they were your pay for the next six months, since I feel you no longer deserve it. Now, Relus, how do you feel about taking a stroll?" "That would depend entirely on where the stroll is to." "I would like you to take these to Myke with compliments of the Graael Order, for showing us that we need to reconsider a lot of things. And, while you're there, do assure Myke that we'll be leaving him alone for quite a while." Relus nodded. Back through that gateway again, this time with large amounts of money. He wondered why Alkaan would bother to give Myke so much money- six months of Vassarin's pay amounted to 45 thousand gold. Was he that angry with their failure? OOC: Obviously, I'm not giving Myke that much money. ;>_____________> Relus to meet Clark shortly. As in, when I need to RP again or when someone posts. =\ |

The chest plate was by far the worst piece to remove, mostly because it was directly connected to the piece on his back. Clark could not focus on anything anyone was saying, and when the armor was wrenched free, his vision went fuzzy for a moment and he saw blackness creeping into the edge of his sight. Shaking his head rapidly to dispel any possibility of fainting, Clark responded to the group through gritted teeth, "Fine, sure, that's all great, just tell m--GRRRRAGH--tell me later when this is over!" While he was speaking, the healer and taken off one of Clark's greaves. While they were much smaller pieces of armor, he was so overcome by the pain that they felt as bad as the first shoulder plate had. Finally, all five pieces of armor had been removed. Clark fell back onto the cot in a cold sweat, panting. He glanced over at the pile of his fried armor and scowled. It was all beyond repair; normally he could just go and buy new armor from Ralheim, but the man was still working on forging Clark's custom sword. He'd have to go unprotected for a while. |

(OOC: Relus time! :D) Relus sighed. He'd forgotten just how heavy money could be in large amounts, and after the few miles between the now abandoned fortress and the town he'd seen Myke around, it was a wonder his arms were still intact. He'd hoped that he wouldn't be seen by too many people in town, especially not while he was carrying this much money, but fortunately for him the building Myke had been by was on the outskirts of the town. Alarm bells rang in his head when he saw one of the group that had so nicely disrupted the Order this morning, but it seemed to be looking for someone else. He put the bags down by the door, and knocked. --- Someone knocked at the door. Myke went to open it, not really sure who it would be, only suspecting that it wasn't one of the group. "Hello, this is--," Myke started, before realising who was at the door, "... Okay, Relus, you have about ten seconds to tell me exactly why you're here before I kill you." At this, he drew one of his many swords to emphasise his point. Relus raised his arms to signify a surrender. "Whoa, Myke, calm down! I'm not here to fight now, you've done enough damage for one day. As it happens, I'm here with money." "Money? Relus, I know you used to be really good friends with three people here, but if you hadn't noticed, we're sort of enemies now. Why are you paying us?" "If you'll allow me to step inside, and bring the money in with me, I will tell you." "Fine," Myke said, through gritted teeth, "but you're going to have to live with this being pointed at your neck while you're here." "I can live with that." With this, Myke backed away a few steps to make room for Relus to drag the money into the main room where everyone else was. Seeing the familiar face, Tookie unhooked his axe, glad for another excuse to fight the man. "Tookie, he's not here to fight now, he's here with money for us," Myke said, "so calm down. You'll get to rearrange his face someday, don't worry." "I'm not very popular here," Relus remarked dryly. I knight thee Sir Relus, MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS. Tookie had enough sense left not to say that one out loud, but one withering look from Emysia told him that even his thoughts were not a safe haven. "Okay, Relus," Myke said, still contemplating killing the man now and being done with all of this, "tell everyone why exactly you're here, and why we shouldn't kill you right now." "I am here with your payment for today, and you shouldn't kill me right now because I can answer some of your questions and it would be a waste of a nice floor." "Our... payment?," Emysia asked, "Relus, you do realise you're paying the enemy?" "No, Emysia, Vassarin is paying 'the enemy'. Alkaan was waiting for us at the gateway, with six months worth of Vassarin's pay. I can only assume he already knew of what was happening this morning- by the way, you all did rather well for yourselves- and was planning to give Vassarin that money today if we'd succeeded. However, we lost today, and so Alkaan has decided that you deserve Vassarin's pay more than he does. So, without further delay, Myke, I present to you and your companions forty five thousand gold pieces, all with the compliments of Alkaan and the Graael Order." "... This is a sick joke," Tookie said, really not trusting this, "it just has to be. Why would you congratulate us?" "Because we recognise the strong. We were also still hoping that Myke might be... persuaded to join us." "Yeah, Relus, about that? Thanks, but no thanks. I don't really feel like going back to Langras." "Well, we're not forcing you. We learnt enough about the results of that two years ago. Now", Relus said, scanning around the room, "does anyone else have any questions they'd like me to answer while I'm trying to be helpful?" |

Clark's eyes grew wide when he saw the money that was to be given to them. With that kind of gold on their hands, the mercenaries could survive for quite a while without doing a single job. Not that that's a good idea, thought Clark. We need to achieve as much fame and power as possible. If they find me, I want to have an army ready to fight their own. Slowly raising himself to a sitting position, Clark looked Relus over but kept quiet, waiting for anyone else to say something. |

XEQ is waiting silently and completely still outside the building when the powerful-seeming magician from earlier approaches, carrying some heavy bags. It reaches behind its back for an arrow as the man walks up and knocks on the door. He is allowed in, so the archer puts the arrow back. Somehow, this threat is not a threat. The bags may mean something. Or it could be that this man and the swordsman have some agreement. After all, neither went close to the other on the battlefield. This seems likely to be the truth, so the earthen being does not pursue the matter any further. The mallet-wielder has still not come. This is unexpected. Edited by Lewa, May 28 2009, 01:22 PM.

"Actually," Tookie said, "I have a question. Where's your pay? I seem to recall you losing to us as well, so I think if we're getting one set of pay we should get both." "Alkaan doesn't seem to think I did badly enough to merit losing my pay to you." "... Oh. So, uh, I don't really care why you're bringing us money," Tookie continued, "but why exactly are you still trying to help us?" "Let's just say my loyalties are... highly divided, and leave it at that. Regardless, you'll have very few problems with me in the future, if any at all." ... What a load of crap. |

Streak "Streak" had been keeping an eye on the building he'd identified as a Mercenary's guild for a few days now. Recently, Streak had been spending much of his time in the forested area a few miles to the Northwest, but after seeing this group in action, he found himself curious, and had tracked them back here. He wasn't sure exactly what he wanted... in his mind, it was just another thing to occupy his time. He watched quietly from a nearby alleyway the man approached with the large bags... of what, Streak couldn't tell from this distance, but from the reaction he got from the man who answered, he was less than welcome among this lot. Former enemy, perhaps? The man was allowed inside, leaving Streak with not much to watch. Looking around, the agile man bounded up the side of the building, and took up a position near the edge of the roof, but still out of sight. He was curious to see what might emerge from the door next, or perhaps who else might come knocking, and he had a better view from up here. Besides - it was nice to enjoy the sun on his face for a change, rather than skulking in the alleys all the time. |

XEQ hears something very faint and looks around without moving. It is not her. She would not be climbing the building. Whoever is climbing the building could be a burglar, and the archer has been led to understand that killing burglars is acceptable to society. Hunting down this intruder would be a way of occupying time until either the girl arrives or there is another mission. It will also be good practice. The unnaturally tall bowman reaches into its quiver to load its bow. It fires at the roof, judging that the target is up there. |

Streak Streak flattens himself against the roof as the hidden, robed figure points the bow in his general direction. Holy hell!! Streak keeps himself flattened, in case more arrows are shot. How the hell did he know I'm up here... and why the hell is he shooting at me?! ...then again, he wasn't terribly surprised at the fact that someone was shooting at him. He wasn't exactly popular among society. He's killed, he steals... but to be fair, no more so than he's forced to. |

The person on the roof does not respond to the initial arrow. It was a miss, as expected. Without being able to see the target, XEQ will not hit it. So it must find a way to see the intruder. The archer looks around, but there are no things to climb upon. It marches off towards the town, intending to take something sturdy. |

Streak Streak, deciding to take a more direct approach, waits for him... her? It? To leave, and then makes his way down off the roof, and approaches the building, knocking on the door. With any luck, they'll give him a slightly warmer welcome than the archer had... and perhaps slightly warmer than the welcome the other fellow with the bags had recieved. Maybe they'll even know why.... 'it' shot at me. ...hrmmph, probably thought I was a burglar trying to break into one of the houses... it's broad daylight, I'm not -that- stupid. If I'm gonna break into somewhere, I'll at least wait till it's dark. His train of thought continues along similar lines, eventually wandering back to the man with the bags. What was in them? Why was he bringing them to people that were obviously not particularly fond of him? Who was he in the first place that they reacted to him like that? |

"Uhhh... I'll get that," Tookie said, referring to the door as he unhooked his axe. It might be someone who was trying to kill them, or it might not. He didn't know, and he didn't want to be caught out. Going to the door, he wondered who it could be this time. ... It was certainly no-one he knew. Definitely older-looking than anyone he'd seen in Elibe, and since he didn't seem to mean any harm, Tookie put his axe away. "Sorry about that, the last person to come here had already tried to kill a couple of us today, so we weren't sure who was coming next. How can I help you?" |

Streak Streak raised one eyebrow at the readied axe, but gravitated his hand away from his hunting knife as said axe was put away. "I'd just like to ask a question or two about that covered-up person with the bow - he just shot at me while I was up on that roof over there." He indicated the roof in question. "Doing a bit of repairs." He lied. They didn't need to know he'd been watching them. "Any idea why? Or who... or what he is? The way he's covered up, I can't even tell if it IS a 'he'." Streak thought about that bit about the last person to come here. "Oh yeah, I saw that guy with the bags come along... guy who answered the door pointed a sword at his neck, figured there was something up between him and you. Guess that explains that." |

XEQ returns to the guild building, pulling a sturdy wooden dray. It positions the dray beside the building and steps up into the wagon. It is now just tall enough to see if anybody is on the roof. Nobody is. The tall being scans the surrounding fields but does not see the intruder running away. Possibly the human is behind one of the small shrubs or in a ditch of some sort. In any case, this dray will not assist in finding the target. The archer gets down from the stolen vehicle. It has not seen the one who wished to kill it or her mallet. She may have left. XEQ enters the guild building, noticing an unfamiliar man immediately. This is not the man who had the bags, so he must have arrived while the dark-clothed mercenary was in town. |

(OOC: This here is a short RP kinda-but-not-really-explaining what Brianna’s been up to while everyone else was following Myke’s storyline. She'll not be back at the guild yet, mainly because I don’t want to disturb you guys just yet. <_<) Brianna Brianna sat at her favourite table in the pub, nursing a mug of ale in her hands. She was brooding over the events of the past day: events that had nothing to do with Myke or the other mercenaries and everything to do with her soldiering past. What should have been a simple meeting of old army buddies had turned into something much less enjoyable, and had given Brianna one hell of a headache. However, she did not really wish to dwell any longer on the subject and so tried to turn her mind to other matters while taking a sip of her drink. She supposed that she should really head back to the Guild soon, to find out what, if anything, had happened in her absence. And, more importantly, to find out if there was a new, halfway decent paying job lined up yet. Looking down at her mug, she discovered that the glass was still half-full (or half-empty, if you think that way) of ale. Deciding that leaving at that moment would be a waste of a perfectly good beverage, she settled in for another half hour of wallowing and drinking. |

(OOC: What the hell I turn away for a day and suddenly OH GOD POST STORM.) Serena Serena couldn't help but wince as she heard the healer (poor guy was probably going to get a heart attack) attempt to pry loose the plates of metal that had fused with Clark's skin. She never had anything like that happen to her (she made it a rule of hers to avoid wearing heavy armor. Also avoid magic, although that last one didn't pan out so well). Besides, the shouts were enough to tell her that the process was extremely painful. It was then that someone else entered the guild hall, saying something about getting shot at. Serena yawned and let Myke handle him. She was getting tired again. |

BIC: Clark was irritable. His whole body was throbbing, and if not for the healing effects of the vulneraries the healer had used on him, he'd be missing most of the skin on his torso. As it was, what he did have could hardly be called skin; it was thin, papery, translucent, and worst of all, it itched like hell. To take his mind off of his new "skin," Clark shifted in his seat so that he could see the newcomer. "Who are you and what do you want?" Clark snapped. He was in no mood for talking and only wanted to hear what he had to. |

OOC: I'm assuming that was directed at Streak, but Relus doesn't know that. :D IC Relus looked over at the man who had spoken. Didn't seem to be in a good mood, but Relus had offered to answer any questions these people might have, and, well, a question was a question. "Ah, I was wondering when someone would ask that. I am Relus, a magician working with the Graael Order. All I want today is to deliever this money as per orders- which I have- and to answer a few questions you may have about us, mostly because Myke is still like a little brother to me. Even if he does insist on pointing that sword at my neck." "Nothing personal, Relus," Myke said in mock protest, "you are, after all, working with the Order. We'd tie your hands behind your back, but we don't have any rope." "And if that's all, Relus," Tookie said, now wanting something answered, "I've heard two very different estimates of this Langras world that seems to be coming up in yours and Myke's conversations; two hundred people at most or a bloody huge army. Which is it?" "I was hoping," Relus sighed, "that no-one would ask me that. But, I said I would answer your questions, and so I shall; the two hundred is the closest. Between the Graael Order and the villages left on Langras, there are at most five hundred people, less than a hundred of which work for the Order. Based on what I saw of this group today, between five and ten of us at most could cause any real damage to you, and most if not all of them are being kept under tight wraps on Langras." ... Hmph. It'll do for now. I can ask about that crap about my father and why I'm here later. |

Streak Streak looked over at the irritable person - who looked like hell, incidentally, Streak could hardly blame him for being pissed off at small things like the presence of strangers - and smirked a bit. "The only reason I came to talk was to ask about that.... XEQ... thing that was shooting at me, I was hoping you folks might know why, but it seems to be a bit of a mystery to you, as well. Especially considering it apparently doesn't talk." He then took on a much more serious expression, and tone of voice. Time to lay down the chips. "But I will admit I've been watching you guys for a few days. Not because anyone's asked me to, before you get the wrong idea. I tend to live among the streets, or more commonly, the forests off to the Northeast of here, and I saw you guys in action not too long ago, and I took interest. I've come to the conclusion that you're a group of mercenaries." He pulled his hunting knife out of his boot, and begun to flip it around casually. "And quite frankly, I was thinking I might stick around for a bit. Join in the fun for a while. Been too long since I've held down any kind of work, and it'd be nice to get into the thick of some action for a little while." He noted the looks he was receiving. "Provided I'm not wrong... and if I'm not overstepping myself, of course. If I'm being too forward, I'll be happy to drag myself back home and continue on as I have as if I'd never encountered you." |

Weyler stood away from all the conversation, watching. The "Relus" fellow, the sage from the earlier conflict, was being unusually accommodating, seeming almost eager to share what he knew of the organization he served. Relus claimed his allegiance was still up in the air, but Weyler hadn't seen any hesitation on his part when he attacked Myke's friends. Weyler wanted the man out of the building, but he chose to say nothing. Tookie had opened the door for a stranger at some point during Relus's talk with Myke and Clark. He was a tall, black-haired man, full of questions about XEQ. Apparently he'd aggrovated him. Weyler made no comment on the new arrival, shifting his focus between the stranger and Relus. |

Clark muttered darkly under his breath. "Melanie! When do we need to leave if we're to arrive on time?" he demanded. "Clark, you need to lie d--" "I didn't ask for your opinion!" he interrupted. "When do we depart?" Melanie glanced out the window at the position of the sun. "I'd say within the hour, though in your condition, you may want to take it easy." Grumbling, Clark got up slowly, stretching out his legs and wincing from the pain where his greaves had been. He dropped a small bag of gold pieces into the hands of the healer, then shooed him out the door. Clark walked awkwardly to the back, adjusting to his new limitations. "Myke," he said without turning around, "when your guest has left, please come out back with me." Once he was outside, Clark pulled two wooden practice swords out of the makeshift armory next to the Guild building, then withdrew his dagger from his belt. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alice was cooking brunch at the barracks as usual in the morning. As usual, Recens was nowhere to be found, as he had risen early to do his morning training exercises, but the rest of the mercenaries were likely to sleep in for another hour before getting up. Well, most of the mercenaries, anyway. Alice had no idea how Brannan behaved. She knew that Lou would come down the stairs in his sleeping clothes, Byron would enter and yawn while attempting to stuff a few rolls into his mouth, Ognus would swipe something from the table when no one was looking and duck back under the stairs, and Jane would come down the stairs last, looking like hell with a mood to match. But Brannan was the newcomer, and she was almost excited to have him in the barracks. Turning over an egg in her pan, Alice giggled softly to herself. Edited by Seth, May 31 2009, 02:33 AM.

Weyler waited for Clark to make his exit before he approached the stranger. "Forgive the Commander. He's, uh...had a rough couple of days, to say the least." Weyler looked the man over. He certainly had the appearance of a survivalist, so there was merit to that bit of the man's story. There was something about the man's words that made Weyler uneasy, though...the interest in XEQ, his aspiration to join the group, yet withdraw without complaint if he was turned down... "I can't speak with complete certainty, as Clark's word is final, but you ought to be able to join up with us. I haven't seen Clark turn down an application yet, though after his injury..." he paused for a moment, wondering if he should continue. "...you see, a bounty hunter came by not too long ago, and hired us to try and make a capture for him. I won't go into detail, but things didn't go as planned. I imagine Clark's going to use a bit more discretion from this point on." Weyler held out his hand to shake with the stranger. "My name's Weyler. Nice to meet you." ----------- Brannan woke and stretched his arms, wincing as he took the movement a bit farther than he could handle in his current state. He felt tired this morning, having slept poorly the night before. He'd been kept up late by his thoughts. He wasn't bothered with the time it would take for his injuries to fully recover, or the shock he'd experienced from nearly dying - he was through worrying about all that. Brannan wouldn't allow himself to sit around and sulk, allowing his skills to deteriorate. And he certainly wasn't about to let himself become seized by fear. No, he'd have to remain confident and disciplined...those two characteristics were more important than ever to maintain. Brannan rose from his bed, changed into a set of clean clothes, and made his way downstairs. The ache was still there, but thankfully, the pain was not. He didn't feel hungry, but thought it best that he eat something. He headed towards the kitchen upon reaching the ground floor, where he came across Alice preparing a meal. "Good morning," Brannan said with a yawn. Edited by goatfish, May 31 2009, 03:24 AM.

"Oh, ah, thank you." Brannan was used to cooking his own meals, but he wasn't about to complain. His appetite finally struck him once the plate was set down in front of him. He wanted to wolf it down. "Yes, I'm feeling a lot better, actually. Thanks for asking." He smiled and paused to take a bite of the egg. It was delicious, and he had to try all the harder not to make a complete pig of himself. "How are the others doing, Alice?" ---- Weyler returned the smile and shook Streak's hand, then brought his hand back to his side. "So, Streak...you say you've been watching us for a few days? OOC: ... Clark's not planning what I think he's planning, is he? =\ "Well, I'd say that's an invitation for me to leave if ever I've heard one. Good luck with whatever it is you have planned, and I will be seeing you the next time I have a message to deliever. Hopefully, it won't be for a while." With this Relus walked to the door, still under heavy supervision from Myke, and left. Myke sighed- time to go out back and see what Clark wanted. "Good luck with that, Myke," Tookie said, "he doesn't look too happy." "... Damn it, Tookie," Myke muttered, "still not needed. I'll take the luck though, I could probably use it." Stepping outside, he saw Clark waiting in an open space with two wooden swords. Openly, Myke said nothing. Inwardly, he groaned. ... You have to be joking. You just have to be. This isn't even funny. "Alright, Clark, Relus has gone. Let's get this over with." |

Clark tossed one of the swords to Myke. "Without my armor, I'm going to have to fight a little differently," Clark explained. "I've been taught how to fight using a sword as my weapon and a dagger to block, but it's been a while, and I'm out of practice." Clark shifted himself into a defensive stance, then said to Myke, "Attack me." OOC: I don't know what you thought he'd do, but he's not gonna cut up Myke or anything. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alice cracked another egg and let it sizzle in the pan. "The commander's still sore, but he should be alright today. He and you were the only ones who took heavy damage," she added. "I've seen what Clark is capable of, but I never had to heal the wounds he inflicted. How is everything?" Alice changed the subject to the food Brannan was eating. |

OOC: I actually thought he was going to try and spar in his condition. >_> IC Myke caught the sword being thrown at him and nodded when Clark explained what was happening. He was going to have to tread carefully here, since he didn't think Clark was in any shape to be fighting so soon no matter what he said. However, an order was an order, and sparring with Clark would be good practice anyway. He moved in, swinging the sword a bit more slowly than he usually did- which was still quite fast- and hoped that he wouldn't hit anything too breakable or painful. He didn't normally fight injured people, unless they had already been injured by him. |

Clark raised his arm to block the strike with his dagger, but the muscles in his arm and shoulder had been still for so long that moving it felt like his skin was being peeled off again. He winced, then groaned as Myke's sword struck his arm. "Dammit!" he yelled. "Again!" After a couple of tries, Clark's arm was in good enough condition to put the dagger in the way of the sword strike, though he probably wouldn't be able to counterattack very quickly if he actually needed to. Satisfied with what he'd accomplished. Clark put his practice sword back in the armory closet and headed back in. "We'll be leaving soon, Myke," he said, walking up the steps to the back door. "Your friends can stay here, if they so choose." |

Apparently this newcomer also wishes to join. Many seem to join the band, but XEQ sees that most are not present. That archer girl it shot and the armored man who led them to the battle where Clark was injured both are missing. The commander seems to be recovering, as he is walking around and asking the swordsman out back with swords. He also mentioned having to be somewhere soon. Possibly they have been hired for something. The archer stomps its foot a few times to get attention, then points up and waves around its bow. It is not confident that they will understand its meaning, but it must try to warn them of the burglar all the same. |

Brannan didn't respond right away. He was staring at his plate as he thought to himself. No one besides himself and Byron had been seriously wounded, which was good...but what did that mean for the group? Would Byron be planning an offensive of his own, escalating the feud? Brannan couldn't picture him just taking the assault and acting like it never happened. "Hmmm? Oh, it's delicious. Thanks again for the meal." Though he was doing his best to remain civilized, he was still eating rather quickly. Only half a roll and a few bits of sausage remained on his plate. |

Brianna After drinking the rest of her ale, Brianna made her way back to the guild. On the way she passed by a stranger who had apparently come out of the Guild's building. She hoped that he was a client, and spent the rest of the walk back thinking of gold, lots of gold. Walking in the front door, she noticed two things straight away. The first was XEQ, who was waving his bow in the air, for what reason Brianna couldn't begin to guess. XEQ was a very strange creature. The second was yet another stranger, this one talking to Weyler. He was tall, quite a bit older than her and didn't very much look like a paying customer. In fact, he looked much more like a new recruit, he had that same misfit feel most of the guild members did. Striding up to him, Brianna stuck out her hand in greeting. "So, it seems we've bagged ourselves a newbie. I'm Brianna, it's nice to meet you." She scanned the room for their leader, Clark, but he seemed to be out. Hoping that the commander had recovered from his injuries, Brianna turned instead to Weyler. "Sorry that I was away for a little while. Something personal came up. Is Clark okay? What has happened here since he was injured? Actually, scratch that question, I don't really need to know. Do we have a new job lined up?" Edited by Serene Steelzard, Jun 1 2009, 07:53 AM.

Weyler smiled as Brianna approached. "It's nice to see you again. Good to have you back with us." He lost a bit of his upbeat tone as the subject turned to Clark. "Hmmm...he's alive and moving about. A healer just came to see him, so he's doing a lot better than he was. He's out back with Myke right now. Speaking of Myke, you might want to ask him for a more detailed explanation, but we did have another job assaulting some personal enemies of his from another w- well, as I said, go to Myke for the details. "Another job lined up? I wouldn't put it past Clark to arrange a new mission even in his state. He said something about having to 'depart within the hour', so that could be related to a job." |

"That's a nice dance you have there, XEQ," Tookie remarked, instantly seizing the most logical reason behind the archer's behaviour. He would've imitated it, but him and dancing went about as well as... well, two things that go very badly together. There might have been some deeper meaning behind it, but considering XEQ didn't communicate at all, how was anyone supposed to tell that? |

Its signaling having been misunderstood, XEQ gives up and stands still, as is its custom. The thief seems to be gone, so there is no real need for the other mercenaries to know about it. If it returns, though, the archer will be ready. It did not pull that dray out here for no reason. Of course, if there is a mission, XEQ will accompany the group. The newcomer should be the one to stay back and guard from roof-climbing intruders. |

Streak Streak notices that it had been gesturing toward the roof. Realization dawns on his face. "I think I know what it was on about. One of the places I hung out while watching you guys was up on the roof - and I was up there just a little while ago when he shot at me. He probably didn't realize I'm the guy he was shooting at, but eh. No harm done." He simply shrugs, and spares one more glance toward XEQ. "So long as he doesn't try to shoot me again." He then turns his attention to Brianna. Accepting the handshake, he nodded politely. "I'm called Streak." |

Myke again nodded, though thinking that the friends Clark was referring to would rather follow him wherever the group were going. He too returned inside, where he noted that XEQ had returned and someone else had shown up, a woman in white armour. Dammit, I should know her... His fears were assuaged when she introduced herself to a newcomer. Oh yeah, Brianna. I'll have to spend time some more time sitting and remembering names, the way things are going. |

Clark opened the door and walked through the building as quickly as he could, which, admittedly, wasn't very quick, given his current condition. He remained as focused as normal, though, and began barking out commands to no one in particular. "Everyone, we're leaving within the hour. We most likely won't be returning until tomorrow, so get anything you're going to need tonight and have it ready. I'm going to go change into a new set of clothes." Clark looked down at himself as he said the last bit. His shirt was in tatters from where it had been incinerated by the armor and lightning, and his pants weren't much better. He would also need to completely restock on his supply of pitch and matches, since they had been destroyed by the blast. "We'll leave when everyone returns, or when an hour has passed, whichever comes first. Don't be late, or you'll be left behind." With that, Clark walked out of the Guild and headed back to the Grand Sunset. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lou plodded down the stairs in his pajamas, led eagerly on by the smell of Alice's cooking. His mood turned sour when he saw Brannan seated at the table, having already devoured most of his meal, but Lou knew the next plate was his. He sat as far from Brannan as possible and waited impatiently for his food. |

"Not like I have anything to get," Tookie muttered under his breath. It was true, after all; all he had were the clothes on his back and an axe. Emysia and Lilane hadn't exactly been able to prepare themselves well either, but then they didn't need anything but magic. Myke was the only one who might need to worry, and he had collected more swords than he cared to think about. He would be fine if it was only one night, though he was wary of his arnour now after seeing what had happened to Clark. It just takes one... then again, it only takes one poor dodge to get an axe in your shin, and I'd rather not have nothing but a thin layer of fabric between me and whatever weapon is aimed at me. Tookie's got guts, fighting in that, even if it is all he's got. Myke frowned- that probably was the only set of clothes Tookie had, if his story was any indication. |

Weyler frowned once his suspicions that the group would be on the move after all were verified. Preferably, he'd have had Clark take a few days off to be safe, but one couldn't argue with the Commander once his mind was set. The earlier incident with Melanie taught that to Weyler. What drives you to push yourself so far, Clark? Is it a sense of morality, perhaps? Or fame; is it ambition that drives you? Or is it really just the money... Weyler seated himself in a nearby chair. "I've got everything I need with me already. I'll just wait here until you all return." ------ Brannan's eyes darted to Lou as the mage entered the room. He smiled, but Lou was no longer looking at him. Brannan followed the young man with his eyes as he found a seat at the table, the farthest empty seat from Brannan's current position. He continued to watch Lou, who still hadn't looked up at him. Brannan cleared his throat, placed his fork down, and adorned a smile. "Good morning, Lou." |

The stranger informs XEQ that it was the robber on the roof. So there was no robber on the roof. There was also no mallet-girl. Yet they are soon to leave for a new mission, announces the commander, who seems to be ignoring his injuries, though he is still in a weakened condition. Humans are very fragile. Clark exits to retrieve supplies for staying out all night. The archer needs to do no such thing. It has only its bow, its quiver of arrows, and its many layers of clothing. At the moment it also has a bit of gold on its person, hidden in the base of its quiver. It does not know what to do with this gold, so it will simply keep it for now. |

(OOC: You wanted it, you got it. One long, crappy RP introducing Lucien coming right up.) Brianna Cocking her head to one side, Brianna checked off a mental list of items she’d need for a day trip. Being a soldier had taught her to always be ready to move out at a moment’s notice, so she was already carrying everything she needed. She carried in her sack plenty of cooked and preserved food and water, weapons, a vulnerary or two, even a spare change of underwear. Thinking about food made Brianna hungry, as usual, so she plonked herself down on a chair near Weyler and pulled out some roast ham, nibbling on it a little. Little did she know that this small act was about to introduce a decidedly weird new member to the mercenary group… Lucien Dammit! My sense of direction has gone all completely backwards. This is what I get for separating from Lykaios… not that it was my idea. Stubborn, stubborn woman. Skulking in the shadows around a town, Lucien sulked about his missing mate. She’d heard some family news and had wanted to deal with it alone, sending Lucien away by himself, telling him that he was useless if he couldn’t fend for himself for a few weeks. Indeed he was fully capable of taking care of himself, he just didn’t want to. Being parted from his life-mate felt like losing some part of his soul and it hurt like hell. Lucien’s stomach rumbled balefully, the more immediate concern of food pulling him out of his self-pitying reverie. While Lucien had been hunting constantly over the past few days, the game had largely been scared off due to bandits and other disturbances so the rabbits and birds that were left were stringy and barely filling. And, Lucien admitted to himself, he’d been incredibly spoiled by the fact that Lykaios bought him food whenever he wanted it. A lot of food. Lucien was about to try his luck on a thin and ragged looking rabbit when he caught a whiff of cooked meat in the air. He was passing by a rather secluded building, which therefore could be the only source. Edging closer, he sniffed the air, once again picking up a faint scent of something rather tasty. Is that… ooooh… ham… cooked ham… Mmmm…. Although his brain argued that he often got chased out with pitchforks when he entered towns, his stomach overruled it and he slunk inside the open door, his nose leading him straight to an orange haired woman who was eating small bites of a very delicious smelling ham. Putting on his best harmless-puppy-dog-begging act, he made his way over to her, stopping just in front of her, whining and generally looking pitiable. Brianna Brianna started when a dog crept towards her, whining and looking at her with such sad and hungry eyes. It looked so miserable that Brianna instantly overlooked its huge size and held out some of her ham. ”You poor thing, here, have the rest of this. I have plenty more.” |

Streak Streak looked over curiously at the canine who made it's way over to the meat, and put on a rather miserable look, winning some ham. A wide grin crossed his face. "Now that is a wolf that knows how to b-... whuh...?" He cut himself off abruptly, taking several sharp sniffs of the air. This wolf was positively coated in the smell of humans. Far more than any wild wolf who was merely around humans often... no, this one belonged with someone. Someone in particular. Approaching slowly, he crouched near the now-happily-eating wolf. "...Where's your companion, boy?" He asked with a gentle tone to his voice. He realized that the miserable look had probably been part of the act to get food, but if he was begging for food in a random place like this (probably lured by the smell of the ham, but still), either he'd manage to sneak away from whoever he belonged with, or they'd been separated, leaving him to fend for himself. |

There is a wolf in the building. XEQ has killed a wolf before, when one wandered into range while the tall being was on guard duty at the manor where it was created. That one was small and thin, probably younger than this one. It was unable to run away, but this one might be agile enough. Ut doesn't seem like these wolf-feeders will allow XEQ to shoot the wolf, though.

Lucien Wolfing down the ham, he barely noticed the man approaching until he knelt down and asked a question that was far too insightful. Sure, a lot of people could recognise a wolf, but how could anyone tell that the wolf travelled with someone else? Lucien stared warily at the man, taking a few deep breaths of his own and coming up even more confused. He smells fully human, he's got no shifter blood. How could he tell? Who is this strange man? He can't know about Lykaios, he can't... Realising that throughout his jumbled thinking that he'd been growling and baring his teeth at the man, Lucien stopped himself, remembering that that kind of behaviour generally made humans go for their weapons, which, indeed, a very strange... thing with a bow looked like it wanted to. Instead Lucien threw his head up in an eeriely human-like gesture and pointedly turned from the strange man, licking at the lady soldier's hand to thank her for the meat. He wagged his tail when she scratched his ears, somehow almost immediately finding the spot where Lucien enjoyed being scratched the most. Strangely she hadn't been intimidated by his rather frightening display towards Streak, which made Lucien like her all the more. Ooooh... that's good. Maybe I could stay with her... no more starved rabbits for me... Edited by Serene Steelzard, Jun 1 2009, 08:59 PM.

Clark hurried to the inn, not wanting to be out in the open in his current condition. If they arrive now, I'm finished. Once he was inside the Grand Sunset, his pace slackened considerably, and he strode calmly to his room. Clark detached the jar of ruined pitch and the burnt matches from his belt, then quickly changed pants. He chose not to put on a new shirt, opting instead to pull a light cloak over his shoulders to allow the new skin to be exposed to air. A quick inspection of his weapons revealed that his sword had been protected by its leather scabbard, but Clark could not find his axe anywhere. Must've been fused with the back plate, he thought. Oh well. I needed to buy myself a proper one anyway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lou glanced down the table at Brannan, muttered a brief "Morning," and turned his attention to the plate that Alice had set before him. She didn't seem as enthusiastic about him coming to breakfast; normally, she teased him about being alone with her. Now, Alice almost seemed as though she was disappointed to see him, like he had ruined the atmosphere. OOC: I'm not going to move this directly along right away because I want to give Tythanin and SS23 a chance to respond. If they don't post soon, though, we'll move on anyway. |

Brannan sat there a moment longer in the silence. He wasn't particularly bothered by it, but he could sense a general feeling of discomfort since Lou's arrival. Perhaps the mage hadn't slept well the previous night, or something trivial like that, but he seemed very bothered. Brannan got up from the table abruptly, causing a harsh sound as the chair moved across the floor. He walked to the counter near Alice to clean the plate he'd used. "Thank you again for breakfast, Alice. I think I'll go see how Recens is doing now." He looked over towards Lou before leaving, offering a smile again. "See you around, Lou." He opened the door to the barracks and made his exit, heading towards the place he'd found Recens training the last time he'd gone looking for him. |

Streak Streak backed off slightly when the wolf started to growl. And then, very suddenly, it stopped, and turned it's attention to... Brianna, her name was? Streak noted from it's behavior that it looked almost... confused about something. So was Streak, to be perfectly honest. This wolf was not acting like any he'd ever encountered. This was an unusual wolf, but just what about him was strange escaped him. Nevertheless, he also reached over and gave him a good scratch. |

(OOC: Dammit people with your fast posting and my inability to remember that I should be posting stuff.) Serena The young mercenary had almost dozed off again in the chair (almost like a second bed at this point) when Clark walked out of his room and startled her out of her daze with a list of new orders for the mercenaries. Nearly falling, she steadied herself in time and tossed Clark a quick salute and a small frown, wondering what exactly he had planned. Before she could ask why exactly they had another job when he was injured (who the hell gave it to him?), he stomped (kind of) out of the guild hall. With a shrug, she got to her feet and began to stretch, running through her mind a list of things she'd need to assemble for an overnight trip. 'Lesse...food. Maybe some sort of bedding. Whetstone for the sword...more food. I'm probably forgetting something, but I'm sure it won't be too bad. Maybe a change of clothes?' She stumbled off to her own room to get the things she wanted packed into one, nice comfortable bag she could simply sling over her shoulder. With her faithful swords kept at her waist and everything else in mostly working order, she walked back into the main hall of the building and paused when she noticed that there was something different about it. Two things different, actually. One was Brianna, that soldier from before who liked to drink a lot and stuff. The second was the fact that there was a wolf near her feet, currently being scratched on the head by the aforementioned soldier. She shrugged and went back to her seat. None of her business. |

Clark left the inn and hurried back to the Guild. The breeze felt strange on his chest, given that he was accustomed to shirts rather than open cloaks, but it was warm enough out that he didn't feel cold. He had only used up about twenty minutes of the hour he had given everyone else, but when he returned, Clark was surprised to find everyone already prepared to leave. Figures. I'm moving too slow, so naturally they're already set to go. "Let's get going, everyone," Clark said. "This place is further north than Auncet, so we need to head out as soon as possible." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As soon as Brannan had left the barracks, Lou turned to Alice and said, "I still don't trust him, Alice." "Why?" she asked, surprised. "He stayed with us even after he got attacked. What's so untrustworthy?" "Think about it, Alice," he replied. "The man's got bounty hunters after him and his arm was damaged before he came here. What better way for him to protect himself than by surrounding himself with a group of tough mercenaries who would take his side?" Alice shook her head. "I don't think he's like that. He seems kind and gentle and...lonely..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recens continued training, this time working on his elbows. They were especially painful to work on because of how much they were supposed to bend, but it was integral to his survival that his arms were in peak condition. Recens heard someone coming through the brush, so he toned down his training significantly so as to not give away his healing effect. |

Auncet...those words brought up memories besides those of the job-gone-sour to Weyler. There was his first encounter with the mercanries from Byron's Fury. He remembered a ranger from that day, and a sage - the woman who injured Clark so grievously - and a swordsman, Brannan, the target that set the two bands against each other. Weyler wondered how far the rivalry stretched. Was the argument over pay from the Auncet incident enough to set former allies against each other? Of course it was. Can't forget what kind of people one generally comes across in this business. Weyler stood quickly, and prepared to head out at Clark's word. ------ "Up and practicing already, Recens? This was the first place I looked, but I wasn't entirely convinced I'd find you here." Brannan stepped through the brush with care, avoiding any snags that might catch his clothes or scratch him. "You put us all to shame with your discipline." He looked over the surrounding area as he approached. No special equipment or weaponry lying around. Recens training really did consist of bashing himself against hard surfaces. It was an amusing thought, but Brannan reminded himself these weren't the actions of an amateur. "But I didn't come here simply to praise you. I wanted to ask you a few questions, namely what you think Byron's odds are of retaliating soon." |

Recens took a break and sat down on a large flat rock nearby. "I'd be interested to find that out myself, Brannan," he replied. "I'm sure he'll take some form of action, but I don't think he'll be rash in his decision. If there is a counterattack, it will be well thought out." |

"Hmmm...well thought out, eh? I suppose that means doing more than simply marching up to Clark's front door, as they did to ours?" Brannan paused and placed his palms together. Byron was enough of an honorable man to protect him, so he had to be careful with what he suggested. He began pacing as he spoke. "My concern is that Byron's tastes may be such that...certain methods of avenging ourselves are beyond his appreciation. So, you see, I'm not sure what boundaries I'm working within...and if I may or may not offend with a suggestion. See my problem?" |

"Aye," agreed Recens, "but he just had an old friend mercilessly beat him to a pulp on his own doorstep, so I'm willing to bet he'd be up for any suggestions." Curiosity pushed Recens to pry a little. "What did you have in mind?" |

"Well, striking at night is always an option. Clark and the others would be more likely to be worn out then. Visibility would be lowered. They might be expecting something along those lines, but we'd have the advantage of lashing out at random. They can't always be prepared." Recens didn't look satisfied with the answer. Brannan laughed. "Personally, I'd prefer something a little more complex. First off, let's keep in mind that while Byron and I sustained some injuries, we did well over all. We had a considerable defensive advantage, and I'd like to play to that in the future. Hell, I'm sure that between you, me, and Ognus, we could set traps all over the field as well. Preferably to seal off the retreat, not for them to walk into while they attack, understand." Brannan parted his hands and made a mock shrug. "But, how do we get the mercenaries back over here? Why would they attack us again when they have virtually no reason to? It's simple enough, really. We just have to gain possession of another target of interest. I'm talking about abduction." |

Serena Clark stomped back in, now equipped for the journey ahead and undoubtedly raring to go. Serena stood up and tossed him another lazy salute, stretching a bit. "Welp, then let's go, chief. You uh...sure you're ready to go, right? I mean I couldn't help but notice the...manly shouts of anger and pain? And the fact you're walking a little funny..." She coughed and scratched her head. "Well...if you think you're all good I guess it's fine. Just watch yourself out there, boss." With an awkward clearing of her throat, she stepped out of the guild hall and followed Weyler, keeping her mouth shut. Random thoughts ran through her mind, many of them wondering just what exactly this mission entailed although there were a few that decided to drudge up memories of that Count Auncet and what an ass he was. Things would work themselves out with time, she supposed. That's how it worked in the past, that's how it would work now. No need to worry. |

XEQ is not one for names and does not recognize the place mentioned by the commander as a reference point for the direction they are headed. The others seem to, though, so it will have no problems following them. The silent archer prefers to take up the rear, and with the leader in such obvious discomfort, this is an even better spot than usual, as it could take down any threats before they could reach Clark. Not that many things are in such a category, besides the woman who caused the injuries. |

Clark led the mercenaries north at a steady pace, feeling less hindered by his injuries now that he had been up and moving about for a while. He stayed east of the area Byron controlled for as long as possible. Better safe than sorry. A sense of ease washed over Clark as they moved further north. The warm breeze felt good on his shoulders, and he knew that this job would be much less strenuous than their last few. Clark appreciated the moment to relax, even if it was still while on the job; he certainly needed it, but this way, he wouldn't have to slow down progress at all. He needed the other mercenaries to see him as a symbol of strength, or they might desert him when the critical moment arrived. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recens pondered Brannan's words. "You wouldn't make a bad commander yourself, Brannan," he remarked. "But remember that while none of us were killed, none of them were, either. Only Clark sustained heavy damage; the others were in good enough shape to run away." He got up and started pacing as well. "If we're to counterattack, we'd need backup. Byron knows a few other mercenary leaders that owe him favors. Using his influence, I'm sure he could drum up a decent-sized force to take them on. "Of course, as you said, we'd need to find a way to lure them in, and in that area, I'm stumped," said Recens with a shrug. "Got any ideas?" |

"Yes, very true. The others weren't injured. That's why we'll need something to delay them. Byron's mercenary friends could come in from behind to pin them in, if you're against the trap idea. Hiding them would be difficult...might be safest to keep them in the city and signal for them when we need them. At the very least, we could count on driving Clark's forces apart in the chaos..." Brannan stopped himself. He was getting too wrapped up in the later details. The first step was to lure them in, so that was the matter that needed resolving first. "My plan to lure them in involves kidnapping. Abduction, as I said before. Going for a wealthy target would be detrimental here...the victim's family or friends might hire more mercenary groups than just Clark's, if Clark's is hired at all. So we've got to make it personal. Someone close to Clark, or someone within his band who holds considerable sway over the others. This is where I'm going to need to have a bit of research done." |

"Mm. The swordswoman with red hair was the one who carried him off after our skrimish, and he went out of his way to protect her during the job at Auncet." Recens felt torn between Brannan and Clark; Clark had been his friend for a long time, but he was so hard to sympathize with, and Brannan knew his struggle as well. He pushed aside any feelings of guilt and continued. "There might be a better target, but I sense some emotional attachment there." |

"Ah, you've got a good eye for this sort of thing after all. But there's a number of things that would complicate the capture of that target. For one, she's a mercenary herself. That means she's capable of holding her own, and, judging by the looks of how she fits in with Clark's band, she'll often have comrades nearby." Brannan wanted to hear of Recens' other suggestion. He didn't want to come right out and ask it - that could detract from his current position of value. By offering advice, he was making himself valuable to the group, something he wanted to be able to count on later. " I suppose the ability to defend one's self isn't crucial in this situation...but the difficulty of performing the ambush is, just likethe factor of emotional attachment. We want somebody...isolated, alone or with few others for extended periods of time, and who will be sorely missed." |

"Ah, good point," Recens replied. "Hmmm...Clark does not seem to rely on very many people. Kidnapping his armorer or the supplier of his magic vials would be a nuisance to him, but not something he couldn't work around." Then it dawned on him. "Brannan, Clark doesn't work in the same way Byron does. Byron contracts jobs directly, while Clark has someone do it for him. We need to nab that person." |

"Perfect. At the very least, we can count on creating a major inconvenience." Brannan was pleased with how the discussion was going. He was getting everything out in the air without any of the negativity he feared the ideas might be met with. "Do you know anything about this person, Recens, or only that this person exists?" |

"Nothing, save that the person exists and works out of a building to the south of the nearby town." Now that he had suggested it, Recens realized how little information he truly possessed. He had no idea of what this person looked like, or how capable of defending himself or herself the person was. Still, it would be easy to have superior numbers even if there were two or three people in the building, so Recens still felt confident in the plan. "We should discuss this with Byron as soon as he wakes up." |

"Alright. I'm sure we'll be able to pull this off, given Byron approves the action. I won't interrupt your training any more." Brannan turned to leave. "Thanks for talking things over with me, Recens. It's been a pleasure, as always." He headed back to the barracks, wondering how much longer Byron would be asleep. |

Once he was certain Brannan was gone, Recens resumed his endurance training. The momentary break had removed the dulling effect of the pain on his elbow, and this time, his strike hurt as bad as the first. Cringing, he let the shards of bone reform and continued. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Byron lurched out of bed, changed into decent clothes, and did his best to walk normally out to the kitchen area. He hobbled a little at first, but within a few steps he felt much better. Once in the kitchen, he swiped a few of Alice's rolls and patted her on the back as a way of expressing his thanks. Byron sat down slowly, taking care not to jilt his collarbone too much, then continued munching on the rolls as Alice brought him his plate. OOC: I haven't made Clark's group arrive yet because I'd like to allow you guys the chance to RP along the way, if you want to.
